Insurance Options - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

What are some of you guys doing as far as insurance?

I've got Country Insurance and I can add it to my home owner policy. Just a scheduled personal property, costs about $70 or so per year.

Did you get insurance? I just got the phone and looking for insurance

I actually added the mutli-device protection pack from att. It is like $30/mo, but it covers all devices on the account, plus up to 3 non-connected devices.

I have that coverage and am having to use it now. When something happens to your phone, it is totally between you and Asurion to get your phone replaced, ATT doesn't get involved. There are nightmare reports on the web of dealing with Asurion. In my case, they have been responsive so far, but they sent me the wrong phone. They sent me a Note Edge, instead of the S6 Edge. I have to refuse shipment, and then go through the process again and submit another claim. Hopefully, they'll continue to be responsive. The cost for replacement of the S6 Edge is $199.

Accidental Handling Warranty in the US

Does anyone know if squaretrade will work on an imported Galaxy Note? I'm not about to drop the money on it if it is questionable whether or not they would cover a replacement at least up to the $600 limit.
Just looked at newegg and I could have spent $20 more for the opportunity to get a 1 ($60) or 2 ($150) year ADH plan. Bummer for me, but maybe it will help somebody else.
I have never broken any of my electronics in the past, but this giant screen on such a thin device has me worried.

Thanks for that! Applied for 3 years protection against theft/accidents on my "$700 tablet" for roughly $160.
I have square trade on my Galaxy Note; paid $69 on Black Friday for 2 years coverage.
SquareTrade will not cover it with ADH. The $89 warranty is only for parts and labor on the fault of the phone. If you break it, you are responsible for the damage costs. Also there is a $100 deductible on any claim.
I have used SquareTrade for the past few years, and unless you buy a device from a phone store, they will not warranty ADH on them.
Their warranties are 2ND to none if you can get the ADH on the device. They fixed an iPad, and iPhone, and paid me back for my Galaxy S II that got burned in a campfire. But since I bought the Note on eBay (New even) they will not provide me with ADH on it.
Any Ebay purchase, new or otherwise is not eligible for accidental.
Ity was said that they would not warrenty a device that does not have a US warranty...but I called them up and gave the guy the website(handtec) and he said that I could get accidental if I ordered it from that website. Now, handtec does offer their own warranty where they will help you out for 24months after your purchase, or if it's within the 1 year Samsung warranty they will act as a middle man. But this is not on their website. Either way, I bought a $98 2 year AHD from square trade for mine, thinking at least if I do bust it, I may be able to get $600 out of it. If they say it's not covered, I'll ask for my $98 back since it was never really valid anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up on that warranty. That is a great policy. I signed up for 2 years since it covers EVERYTHING.

That is a shame, I have had ADH through squaretrade on a previous phone and despite not having any claims was very satisfied with the terms of the plan that I got from them.
Safeware seems to have been around for a long time, and most of the complaints I have found are against their extended service plans rather than their ADH/Theft plans, and they seem really flexible in which devices they will cover. I had to do a tablet plan because their only unlocked smartphone coverage was for iPhone, while all the other smartphones listed were carrier specific.

I emailed them specifically about my device gave them the link to the website I bought it from and got a call with a quote and all, I'm still fishing around but I think I'm going to buy it from them because they offer the most for the least amount

I bought my note new from amazon, but the note itself is from Germany.
All they (safeware) asked for proof of ownership at the time of application was the serial number, and I had to pick a second proof of ownership that would be provided in the event of damage or theft, and I chose 'receipt' since one was sent in the shipment with my device.
They never asked where it was purchased from though, so it doesn't really seem that important to them I guess. All they seem to care about is the cost to replace and availability, not whether the device or seller is native to the US. If a replacement can be attained at the coverage amount specified then it should go through.
This is most likely so that they can easily cover ebay purchases.

I already mentioned that I got 3 years of ADH + theft protection up to $700 through safeware for just under $160, but I did not mention that this is with $0 deductible.
Squaretrade says it must have a 90 Day US warranty for their warranty to be effective??? Thats why I went through Safeware.
I've used squaretrade for the past ~10 years, not too many troubles. I do have a bit of concern on their discrimination when it come to smart phones.
The iPhone is a cheaper warranty and you can also add an additional year. You can't do this with any other smartphone (HTC in particular).
I know it's due to the masses of isheep (ie - economies of scale) but for their purpose it seems like it shouldn't matter.

Why wouldnt it matter? Iphone parts are ubiquitous and everyone knows how to fix them. An esoteric n7000 which almost no one has in the usa (a year of owning this phone, still never seen someone else with one) means a tech will need more time repairing it and parts will be hard to find.

Who bought nexus 6 on VZW edge?

I know buying it outright would probably be the best option, but i don't think that is in the cards for me currently. Leaving vzw also won't happen because the only other service around me that is decent is att, so not much choice. I could ask at a store, but i try to avoid going there if at all possible
1. Am i correct in the math that really the phone will only raise my bill by about 3.00/mo? 27.xx/mo-25 credit.
2. Is my only insurance option vzw if i do edge?
3. Currently 6mo from upgrade ( which would cost me more 249 + lack of a discount) ?
4. Do i have to surrender my note2 not purchased with edge? I would like to keep it as a backup.
4. I could do moto credit i guess, at which point in Sept. I could still get the service credit because i didn't take upgrade?

Your best bet is to buy the phone outright, if you buy a phone on contract you pay $50 per month per line of service. If you buy a phone outright you only pay $15 per month per line of service do the math 50x12=600 you can almost pay for the phone in one year.
This is assuming your on a similar plan to me.

I pay 40 per line plus data. So that would be 15 instead, over 2 years i could save 600, not 2. Either way i could just save that monthly and have cash for next upgrade.
Because we have a 10GB plan, I get $25 off my monthly line access (originally $40) since I'm on Edge making my line access $15. My bill is no different than before I came to Edge. Where they get you is when you trade in your phone to Edge Up (each time).
If you have less than a 10GB plan, you'll get $15 off the monthly line access of $40 dropping it to $25.

I had to trade in a working phone...at the time I had the M7 but luckily I had my super old OG Droid...I just activated that on my plan right before I went in to Verizon and then sold my M7.
It depends if you can front the money for the phone outright...I could, but my wife thinks its stupid so I chose the Edge route haha.

3. If you are planning on keeping the N6 for the full 24 months you basically get it for ~$50 on edge b/c of the discount. If you upgrade at the 18 months though, you trade in your device to upgrade so it's not quite owning the phone.
4. Yes, when you upgrade through the edge program you trade in your old device, its kind of the trade off to being able to upgrade in 18 months (or by paying off 75% of the device) vs only every 2 years.
4 again?. Yes purchasing through Motorola has no impact on your upgrade date with Verizon.

You must be on an older plan. For current plans (More Everything, or Single Line plans) off or on contract does not make a difference with the smartphone line access fee, only verizon edge. It's in no way cheaper to buy off contract. There may be other benefits, but not cost.
Whatever more everything plan was 18mo ago is what we are on. So in september i would not get the service credit if i didn't take my upgrade? I have read a lot, but no one ever says what plan they have when they mention that part.

I work customer service for Verizon wireless so I completely understand not wanting to go into the store for info.
1. Yes Verizon does $25 dollar edge credits on non loyalty 6gb more everything plans and up (changed in February 6 and up get 25 off instead of 10 and up).
2. Yes and no. Yes if you intend to edge up. no if you intend to ride out the full 24 month agreement. I say this because edge agreements are based on the imei. And the only way to edge up a phone that has either had a warranty replacement or been replaced through insurance is to do an edge over ride which is only possible through assurion replaced phones or tech clnr replacements.
3. Not sure on the question.
4. Yes if you early edge you must return that device. Don't try swapping it to a crappy phone then early edging because that removes that lines eligibility for 90 days. And you would be doing ee if you're still under a contract.

But i am not edge now and 75% through my contract, with the 200 paid upfront haven't i already met the 75% cost? I guess i would just like to keep my unlocked otherwise fine note 2 as a backup in case something weird happens. With my job i can't go w/o a phone
when it comes to the bottom line is it worth it to switch to the edge program over full upgrade?

Yes you would have to return it. Going from any point that's not 1 day past the end of the 2 year contract to edge is considered early edge and you must return the device currently on the line qualifying for early edge. Its how Verizon recoups the cost of you getting a new device before completing the 2 year contract where they sold you a device at a significantly discounted price. I mean the best route to take here would be to buy the phone at full retail activate it on your line then wait for the contract to run out and collect the 15 or 25 dollar month to month discount depending on the more everything plan you're on.
Yes edge is cheaper in the long run than 2 year upgrade for any high end device

So for sure it sounds like in September i can start taking the service discount. I know this would be the cheapest route in the long run, just have to convince the finance manage that it is.... otherwise i will just do edge
I have a Droid Turbo in Edge, and the only issue is because they changed the Edge Up value to 75%. This means, no matter the age of the phone, to them its worth 25% of the price (in this case $162.50). Which I think is kinda crappy. Maybe, maybe, at the 18 months mark the phone on the secondary market might be worth less than $167.50. But I would think you could get more selling it yourself. For example. I have the Droid Turbo. I have had it for about 6 months. Lets say I want to buy the Nexus 6 on Edge. I have 2 options. I can pay them around $300 and give them the phone and "Edge Up" to the Nexus 6. I pay $300 out of pocket and give them the phone. Even though they can probably sell the phone for, I dunno, $400 maybe. They are only giving me $167.50 for the phone, I have to make up the rest. Or, I can pay it off in full, around $467 and I get to keep the phone. Then I can go to ebay or swappa and sell it for about that much. Leaving me out the monthly payments I have already made (could vary from phone to phone). So, at this point, I can pay them $300 or I can pay them $467 and try to get some of my money back. I sure as heck will get more than $167 for the phone.
Now lets say I am at the 18 month point. I can just give them the phone and I can "Edge Up" to a new phone. Or I can pay them $167.50 and get the phone and sell it myself. So if the phone at that time id worth $150, then yeah its a good deal. If its worth more you are better selling it.
I think I am going to wait until it is available at Costco, then i can get the good squaretrade warranty and just do the Edge thing at that time.

Is it because it wasn't a corporate store? Or are they right? If that is the case eff vzw and i will just go monthly when my contract is up and buy a new phone outright.

If you are on a subsidized plan (i.e. you paid $200 for the phone up front and nothing more) then you do have to either wait for your upgrade or an "Early Edge" promotion (thye had one for the Droid Turbo). The reason is you are "paying" for the phone over your contract. Depending on how far from your upgrade you are you might be able to convince someone at a corporate store.

Samsung Protection Plus now available for S7/S7E

Just a heads up, in case you didn't know what to spend your $100 Samsung credit on from the S7 carrier promotion, OR just wanted to get additional coverage for our phones, we are now able to check out on Samsung.com and order the Samsung Protection Plus warranty. I've been trying for several days and even called in to purchase this but the rep said they needed to update their system to validate and accept our IMEI. May be worth it to some since we can't open up our phones to replace the battery in a year or two when it goes bad but I got it mainly because our phone is so slick.

I personally never get warranties, since I change phones every six months. Plus I have never broken nor scratch a phone's screen.

Best Insurance I found
Wells Fargo has the best insurance I have seen and I am using with the 4 phones on our family plan. Cost for the insurance is $0 but you have to have a Wells Fargo credit card and you have to pay your cell phone bill with that credit card. $25 deductible. Did not have any credit cards before but got one just for this after a rash of broken screens last year.

I just ordered the Samsung insurance 10 minutes ago... the guy told me I was covered today and have fun with it. I believe the confusion is that you have to order the protection plan with in the year warranty. then your 2 years start right there. They will replace your phone 2 times a year.. so I'm going swimming with it and enjoy it.
I'm going to cancel my tempered glass that would have not fit right or worked right and just get the plan. sucks that I have to do this but I'm already out of allot of money.

No. It's saying that if the phone stops working for something covered by the factory warranty, that factory warranty will cover it. (This is standard with every insurance plan I've seen.) After the warranty is done (1 year here in he U.S., I think), then Samsung Protect will cover it. Accidental damage (broken screen, water damage, running over it with your lawn mower) is covered from the day you purchase Samsung protect.

Correct. I bought the warranty the day I got my phone, and have been relaxed and calm since then. Typically never buy warranties, but with the included free battery replacement this was too reasonable to pass up. Especially since when I had my S4 i broke the screen twice!

I just cracked the rear glass on my s7 edge. Samsung repair will charge $270 and take around 10-15 days to repair (not replace) the phone (including shipping) during which I have no phone.
I looked at the protection plus plan and can see no reason why I couldn't just buy the plan and immediately file a claim. They send a replacement within 24 hours and I have 10 days to return my broken phone so no downtime. Cost? $129 for the plan plus $79 deductable - cheaper than paying just for the repair, faster, and I get coverage for 2 years. I chatted with support and they said they saw no reason I couldn't do this. I'll check with the Protection Plus folks but I can't see how they can deny coverage. The FAQ mentions nothing about pre-existing conditions or a wait period before I can submit a claim.
FYI: I would have considered not fixing the screen since I (now) have a case to protect it and it is therefore not visible. However I'm sure a cracked screen means it is no longer water proof and that was a major reason why I upgraded from the s6 to s7.
Fwiw Square Trade doesn't insure any unlocked phones. Samsung Protection Plus doesn't recognize any G930F or G930FD phones either.

What's the best mobile insurance for the Note 8?

I purchased the Note 8 for TMO from Samsung direct. I've never purchased insurance before because the deductibles were so high, but I've never owned a phone this expensive before either. I can get TMO, Samsung or Geek Squad coverage and I am wondering about the pro's and cons of the offerings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just did squaretrade. I like it that it's a one time pay vs a monthly, I can use it for future phones, deductible is $99 and I can use it 3 times per plan. I rarely keep a phone for more then a year so works for me.
I used worth ave group. It was around $80 a year. Deductible is $50.
I used it twice to fix my wife's broken iPhone screen. Did not have any issues.

Question, the most I can choose is $899. The phone is more expensive than that.
Square trade for my note 8 tmobile 104 for 2 years and 99 deductible have been using them for about 7 years and never had a problem with them

I choose that amount. I figured if the phone was a total lose I would eat the other $50. I mainly have it incase I crack the screen.

I just looked at the Squaretrade and it does not cover loss/theft. Also, it's unclear what happens if you crack the screen or the back and they don't have replacement parts. I seriously doubt they have replacement screens for N8 at this point. Will they cover buying a new device?

For the first time ever I accepted the sales outlets insurance. 12.00€ per month. All risks so I am told BUT I have every confidence should I need to make a claim there will be the normal insurance situations?
As you wrote this is an expensive mobile device that is large and could be dropped. I think insurance is worth it in this case.
I suggest you enquire at the outlet you made your purchase. Failing that what about approaching the same company who insures your home or car or whatever? The only other thing I would mention is there is no such thing as cheap, good, insurance. Use a reputable company. Let us know what you find. :highfive:

It does not cover theft. Honestly the phone never leaves my side and if I get it stolen from me its fairly useless to anybody.
Squaretrade is the best bang for your buck.
Look for 20 to 30 percent off coupons.

Thanks for the input. I ended up choosing Squaretrade. It cost $159 for three years of coverage which covers the N8 and a new phone when I buy it. They are having a special right now. The deductible is $99. I've never lost a phone, so I decided damage protection is all I really need.

Depends on your usage and how often you switch phones.
I'm on this two jump thingy. All i need is a year of phone coverage. With the wort have group, that 1 year is like 80 bux i think? I dont plan to use it because i am not clumsy like some people.
But if you plan to keep this device longer than a year, then square trade is the first option I'd pick.
I am going to go with samsung, having an unlocked phone both AT&T and Verizon said they would not offer me insurance.

If you bank with Wells Fargo you can get $600 of phone insurance with a $25 deductible by just paying your phone bill with their Visa card. That's enough to cover a broken screen. I've used it once and it worked out well.

Wish I had found ones that actually worked.
I purchased squaretrade. they have been around about as long as ebay has. I found this post and it had some great information about phone insurance.
I also went with Squaretrade. I have never lost a phone or had one stolen (knock on wood and all of that), so I'm not too worried about that. They were nice enough to refund me the entire price of the Squaretrade plan I had on my S7E, since I'd never used it in the 10.5 months I've had it on their plan. So the cost of a 2 year policy for the Note 8 is only like $50 net.

Insurance options?

I'm getting (eventually, thanks Sammy) the 512gb Ocean Blue and the delayed order has given me time to compare insurance options. My current carrier is T-Mobile and their insurance is $12/month with a $250 deductible. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $538 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct. That is quite expensive so I've started to look elsewhere.
Esurance is $149 for 2 years of coverage and anywhere from $25 deduct for an easy fix up to $199 for complete loss and they cover lost or stolen. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $348 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct. I'm just not sure if they will charge more if you have the 512gb model which is more expensive.
SquareTrade is $129 for 2 years of coverage and anywhere from $25 deduct for a cracked screen up to $99 deduct for a complete loss. Only catch is they don't cover loss or stolen. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $228 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct.
Any thoughts? Anyone else have any insurance suggestions? With a $1,300 device I'm definitely in the market.

I'm not sure. If you go to the Premium Care site and put in your mobile phone number it will tell you if you are eligible. I carried it on my Note 8 that I bought from Swappa brand new. I bought the 9 from Samsung this time and added it at checkout.
I am paying my monthly bill using a WF Amex card. When you pay the bill through it, you get coverage for up to $600 per a claim and 2 claims in a 12 month period with a $25 deductible.

It looks like they don't cover Lost or Stolen. That's not a deal breaker for me, but I know it is for some people.

Hmmm never heard about this. So you get free protection even for Stolen just not lost. And the only deduct you'd pay is $25. I would just be worried because this device is $1300 and they only cover up to $600? So if your device is stolen they'll replace it with a lesser priced model?

I'm guessing you meant to reply to mine post. I think the difference between stolen and lost is you probably have to file a police report. That to them, probably makes a difference.
As for the reimbursement, here's what it says per their T&C
"Depending on the nature and circumstances of the damage or theft, the benefit administrator, at its sole discretion, may choose to repair or replace the Cellular Wireless Telephone or reimburse the Cardholder for the lesser of a) $600.00 excess of the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) deductible; or b) the current suggested retail price of a replacement Cellular Wireless Telephone of like kind and quality, excluding taxes, delivery and transportation charges and any fees associated with the Cellular
Wireless Telephone service provider less the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) deductible."
So it sounds like they will try to repair or replace the phone, or pay out up to $600. Given that our phone is $1000+, I'm assuming that they will pay out $600 - $25 deductible. Just remember that you aren't paying for any additional warranty plans, so you need to factor that in as well.

I usually use squaretrade for my phones. You can have coverage past 2 years of you renew it yearly. I've never had to file a claim on a phone so I cant speak for the experience of the claim process. Another good thing is of you pay yearly for squaretrade you can switch to to another phone when you upgrade.

I'm thinking about Worth Ave for accidental and theft is about 200 dollars for 2 years. This is insurance though and doesn't cover non accidental malfunction me thinks.

I'm leaning towards SquareTrade personally, its overall the cheapest and a $99 deductible is an easy pill to swallow compared to T-Mobile's $250 deduct. I even did an online chat with SquareTrade and made sure if something happens to my 512gb that I will get a 512gb in return, and not a 128gb and they confirmed yes.
