Reclaim of the camera - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello dear xda users,
as we know, our xperia Z doesn´t have the best camera. I have it for several months. In my case, it makes worse pictures then mid-range devices I used before it, especially in the indoor daylight conditions. I noticed there are some tips to make it better in manual mode, but still it isn´t a win.
So what do you think, could it be reclaimable? Do you have some experience with it?
Thanks for your opinions.

Some softwares can help you produce better results. However they would not by nay means increase your camera pixels or anything but only help you focus better with better exposure and produce better colours
Like for example if you snap documents from your phone camera, camscanner can do wonders.
There are other applications for taking pictures as well on playstore.
Quote me if you have any other question

I tried some other camera apps but photos still have ISO set too high what makes big noise at them.
I found some cyber-shot app/xposed module. Does it worth for try, could it make better photos?

If you think your camera is faulty, only then Sony can help you with your warranty. However you can visit a Sony care and discuss your problem with them. They might be able to help.

Xperia Z1 Camera is Terrible

Hi everyone,hi to all my friends.
I want to ask very important question.Z1's camera is very bad I think. I am waiting for a better camera. My old phone Xperia Arc is better than Z1.Is this a software problem? Is there anyone who thinking like me? Or Are there some special settings for camera?

yeah number of people are complaining for camera... actually hardware specs are good enough for a mobile but sony's software is a complete mess... all you can do is wait and try to upgrade it to latest version...

Hello,
I am also very unhappy with the camera.
Today I updated my firmware from 534 to 257 and I cannot see any differences in the pictures.
But this is only my view, maybe there are improvements which I do not see.
What is the problem? I have to admit I am quite happy with the camera.

Guys these are two shots I took with the new firmware... not too bad I guess
This is @1000 iso... noise level is pretty good and white balance is better than earlier
This is in daylight with plenty of details
I think camera-quality is just where you can realistically expect it.
About on par or better than cheap compacts with same sensor-size, but as you can expect it can´t compete with high-end compacts like Canon G-Series, Panasonic LX, Olympus XZ or similar (I don´t want to mention Sony RX100(II) of course which is far ahead).
On the positive side is relatively low NR of luminance-noise which leaves most fine detail intact, virtually no ugly chroma-noise without the colors being washed out up to the highest sensitivities and quite low contrast which leads to quite good DR for a phone-camera (and of course also doesn´t hide the noise by clipping to black like many other phones)
Negative is mostly the camera-app, unfortunately most other phones aren´t better here as well:
The so called "Manual" mode is a joke, on a real camera this would qualify as P-Mode as most, but certainly not M.
Why are the even give you the chance to adjust ISO while not telling you the shutter-speed the camera will use is beyond me. It is not useful to set ISO yourself when you don´t know which shutter-speed you well get. Of course a real shutter-priority-mode would be much better, but I guess that´s to much to ask.
Superior-Auto is too limiting. I know this mode is meant for point&shoot, but I think the possibility to choose the AR you like wouldn´t be to overwhelming for beginners. And of course that you can only start superior-auto from the lockscreen or with the camera-button also is very stupid.
Besides the scene-recognition of superior-auto is also a bit hit&miss.
Also sharpening can be somewhat high, which emphasizes noise and can destroy fine detail.

[Q] How to get this camera to make good pictures

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

there are two apps much better than FV-5
1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)
2) Camera Zoom FX: Faster focus. More MPX option (18MPX resolution is available)

Then my device is broken. I tested a few shots next to a Galaxy Note 3, and it made much (MUCH) better pictures than my Z1. Tried all kinds of settings, no way to make it right. So mine must be ****. I'm getting it exchanged because of a lazy pixel anyway, but I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I thought they made quality products. :x

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?
Thanks a lot!!!!

[Q] can someone help me stop heavy post processing?

I have a sony xperia Z C6603 and I absolutely hate something about the phone. Before i take pictures it looks great (amazing even) as i take the photo the picture is perfect, then after a second it processes it so much i look more like an alien from outer space than a human being. Not only this but the files are also ridiculously small compare to all other phones. I've downloaded the FV-5 app and it's great, but my photos from my front camera stll lokks like horse s***. i do not want other setting configurations, because nothing fixes it... Has anybody made a fix for this via rooting or whatever? i've searched all over the internet after a solution , but can't seem to find one. One of you geniuses must have a solution, right? (have the 4.3 android version and 10.4.B.0.569 build number).
Not yet. People have tried.many things but.no luck so far. At least Sony finally updated the camera app which was the same since x1 was released

geez.... Yah... my photos did not get better at all, haha. If they could just change the format to JPG or whatever (know that is big files) that would be fantastic, but nooo.... (now referring to sony and not XDA-developers) Great phone, TERRIBLE photo software.

we can see it two ways
the camera hardware sucks and we can't do anything about it
or the camera software sucks and we have to wait for sony to update their binaries and libraries and other stuff. which we also cannot do anything about.

Hello!
I have installed AOKP 4.3 ROM on my Xperia Z. When I need to take a fast picture, I just use auto ISO/Exposure...
When I wanna get better picture in low light, I just use a little bit tweaking In low light, when I'm taking picture of some close object, I just put ISO on 100/200 (max), use flash and that's it! When I'm taking picture a little bit further (3/4 meters), I use 200/400 ISO, and use flash if I can (very big con of our device is bad flash). When I'm doing night portrait, just put ISO on 400 and turn on HDR, photos will look awsome believe me
Tonight I could upload some pictures from my Z, just to give you some clue.
P.S. When you're using front camera, turn on HDR you will get a much better photo quality

Camera Overexposure

I have been recently taking photos with the Z1 and I can say it's a beast both on 8 and 21 mega pixels..
My problem is that some times it overexposes the picture making it worse.
Can I play with some settings on manual or do I need to install another app?(Recommend me some)
Thank you very much

So you know the solution already - go manual mode and play with exposure, that will help a bit. Otherwise, it's hardware and deep software coding that need to be modified.

Turning down exposure doesn't bring out good results
If using HDR isn't the solution then probably nothing is, the z1 and z2 camera are well known for being overly over-exposed. Or you can try third party camera app

It is 100% for certain a Sony sensor. It is the same as the Z2 and Z3. Sony has different optics and better camera drivers/software.

Indeed I was researcing the same some months ago before purchasing the Maxx, and although no one can confirm it, it was obvious for me after I spend a lot of time looking for some information.
First place, the resolution is not so common, so there are no many sensors on the market with it. Second, actual resolution it is 20.7M and not 21M. Often, most of companies just round the numbers up to keep it simple. Third and final one, this camera has no OIS, so for elimination and conclusion, the only sensor that fulfill this specs it is the IMX220.
The other possible option was the IMX230, but it is not released yet as far as I know.
I think there is still plenty of room for improvement, but we have to take in mind that Motorola is really young in image processing software.

Are you sure about this? Sony has not been praised for their post processing because it is noisy and grainy. Also the colours are a little washed out compared to the competition and is colder in colour temperature. The ISO is pumped up absurdly high for night shots as well creating noise and artifacts. I have always felt sony's post processing especially in their auto mode is what is holding them back. This doesn't mean nobody can get good shots but when put into perspective by using a competitor's camera side by side it is hard to argue for sony. The shots look good when not being compared to another camera.
Also someone was upset enough to create a petition for them to fix their software.

Sony handheld cameras are great but their mobile division is a different story. I don't think they even work together that's how disjointed that company is.

I know 2 persons who had Z series and the pictures were really nice, I mean, I'm not saying that Maxx's camera is bad, but I have seen many times that for a "top" sensor, I'm not getting the quality I should; many times I feel that my Nexus 5 take better pictures.
Also I don't know if this is regarding the resolution I use, because I'm not using the full resolution, I'm using 15.5M (16:9) resolution. Would be nice to know if quality is also determined by this factor.
Have you compared pictures against the Nexus 5?
Like I said for sony and many other phones with good cameras, the pictures look good by themselves. When you really compare and examine the details by taking the same picture and cropping to compare do you really see the differences that you cannot see at a glance as easily.
I have G3 which I will compare it against soon. I have taken a few shots against my 2013 Moto X and without a doubt it is far better in detail and lighting as well as white balance.

So...the software isn't what makes the camera perform well. It is the sensor, optics and the driver. The sensor and optics aren't our issue, neither is the software. Its the driver. Unfortunately, this isn't a strong field for Motorola and never has been.
Oh and it *is* the 220, same as the Z1,Z2,Z3. There is no question about it.
That was what I meant when saying "software"; sometimes I don't know the precise words.
Anyway, does someone can confirm or deny that changing the resolution from 4:3 to 16:9 would reduce drastically the quality of the photo?.
:silly:

Anyway, does someone can confirm or deny that changing the resolution from 4:3 to 16:9 would reduce drastically the quality of the photo?.

Not enough to matter IMO.
I can confirm that changing the resolution does not affect the quality of the picture the 16/9 it's just a 4/3 photo cropped

It isn't. The driver is.

I Third and final one, this camera has no OIS, so for elimination and conclusion, the only sensor that fulfill this specs it is the IMX220.
I think there is still plenty of room for improvement, but we have to take in mind that Motorola is really young in image processing software.

Google made Motorola put in OIS for the Motorola Nexus 6, since the LG Nexus 5 (based on the excellent LG phones) had it.
I know that's only a 13 MP camera, but I would gladly trade the pixels for OIS. The lack of OIS keeps this phone from being perfect.
My goodness -- 5.2" 1440p/Snapdragon 805/3GB RAM/turbo charging (also like the Nexus 6)/Qi wireless charging (like the Nexus 6, but very important to me as my Nexus 5 had it) . I'm pretty sure the 5.2" Shamu protoype had the 13MP OIS rear camera. Shame Motorola did not keep that.

Not the driver, the post processing.
The camera is great but we don't have any kind of settings to take advantage of it.
Even with third part app the configurations are limited.
I have hope in Lollipop with manual camera. (or i'll sell my Maxx and buy an Xperia again)
