[Q] Navigation - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hey y'all I just picked up a turbo on Friday and love it so far but I'm having a problem with the navigation on google maps, no matter what I try it won't accurately follow where I'm at what so ever and I'm kinda at a loss. Anyone run into this or have any tips for me?

I'd try these things if you haven't already
.make sure it's set to high accuracy under location
.coear cache and data for maps
.if it's still not working correctly, uninstall updates and then reinstall them
I've not had this issue personally but lemme know if that works. We'll get it figured out man

I was having problems with accuracy the last week or so. It always had me located about a block from my actual location. I don't think it was the phone itself causing the issues. I turned the phone off and back on but still had the same problems. Today it was working normally.
A warning about setting your location to High Accuracy. When you do that, it will also reset the "Scanning Always Available" setting under Advanced Wi-Fi. This setting allows Google to scan for networks even when your Wi-Fi is turned off. If I am using maps, I don't see any need to turn on Wi-Fi locations. I am not connected to a Wi-Fi network while driving.

Did all of this and success!
THANKS!

I'm glad it's working buddy!

How much data are you all using with google maps/navigation? I used it a while back and used .1 GB for about 20 minutes of navigating. I'm on a 2 gig per month data plan so I can't do that very often

I'm not sure off the top of my head but twenty minutes is about my commute to work, so I'll test and let ya know tomorrow

As an option to Google Maps, you might like to consider Waze. I use both apps, but mostly Waze. Regarding data usage, I just took a 5-hour (300 mile) trip with Waze on the entire time. The data usage was 2.67 MB.

Sorry about the delay bud, I work 24 hr shifts and remembering what I'm supposed to do the next day often escapes me until my cycle ends haha. So, for 20 minutes of nav with Google Maps and location set to high accuracy, mine only used 0.01GB.

Waze is really nice if nothing else for the heads up on cops running radar on long trips

No problem. Thanks for checking. I'll try it again and see if it's better. Maybe last time there was some abnormal reason for the high data use. I live in a really small town so I don't need navigation except every once in a while. I just didn't want to blow my whole months data on a trip.

increased GPS signal?

a couple of month ago I almost couldn't get a GPS signal indoors and often outside it took up to a minute. Now suddenly the GPS signal is instant.
What has happened? Has the US Millitary increased the signal quality of the GPS system?
It take slong if you're not using QuickGPS. Maybe your data was outdated that time when it took you so long. Also notice that you should not move too fast while getting the fix. Getting a fix while driving on the highway is almost impossible.
always get a fix with mine, even traveling at 70 mph.
I even managed to get a fix at 258km/h last december in Japan in Shinkansen to Hiroshima. I think I still have pictures of that.. It was an ordinary Qstarz BT GPS..
mine never worked indoors
maybe the people living upstairs removed their lead carpet?
when i;m using my gps a lot it connects very fast. but if i didn't use it for a while it takes a lot to make connection.
But like firefall! said quickgps works ver nice it helps you to make faster connection
WelL I don't get a fix @ say 100 km/h. WTF nevermind, invite me next time Anyway, maybe as a little explanation why QuickGPS is essential for obtaining a quick fix: As y'all may know, GPS works with those satellites circling around above us all. They turn 'round the world and send their time in a very precise format and depending on their position it takes a certain amount of time for the values to be sent to your phone. Thus, the phone will receive different times at one time because they were sent from different distances. From these differences it is possbile to calculate the current position between the satellites, but for that to be of any use it is essential to have a rough idea of where the satellites actually are - that is to say you need a kind of mapping table to associate your GPS data with a real location. This data is also sent by the satellites themselves - but this is not a HSDPA connection or something, but much slower. It can take a few minutes until all data is downloaded via satellite, and that's the amount it takes you to obtain a fix. QuickGPS downloads this data over the internet, which is way faster. So if you regularily download this data you do not have to receive it from the satellites -> You don't have to wait. And as you can see the data is valid for one week, though I think that this is nonsense. The data doesn't change once a week; it's changing all the time, but after a week your old data may be to 50% outdated or something. That means for me: Always download the data through QuickGPS if you get the opportunity. I'm having it downloaded when I connect my X1 to my PC so I don't need to worry

Data on Roaming

Anyone got any experience of how reliable the 'no data services when Roaming' setting is?
Going abroad next week and taking the N1 for the first time. It's easily the most deeply web integrated phone I have had... so I am concerned about getting hammered from the 3.00 GBP per MB data charges if the setting isn't completely fool proof.

Quite reliable. It pretty well shuts things down. For added peace-of-mind, you can always fully disable data services as well
just do the code and disable all data its something like *#*#36 etc...
Cheers guys. Didn't know about the code; I'll do some investigating!

I've been abroad twice so far this year with my N1, one 4 day trip not using data, one 7 day trip with occasional use. I used the setting both times to enable and disable data as required. Billing for the second trip has come through and shows the data use I was expecting so I'm confident with its reliability.
The only thing I did in addition to the setting, was remove my Facebook and Twitter widgets, and toggle Airplane mode off and on after changing the roaming setting (I've no idea if this was needed but it made me feel better lol).
Enjoy your trip
My Nexus One ends up roaming 2-3 times a day every workday for me. It's never used a drop of data when I'm away from the UK.

Data Usage - Rough Guide

Hi folks, I am looking at a driod to replace my WM6.5 unit and up till now I have managed to avoid using anything that needed data, reason... I live in Australia and the telcos know how to charge for data like it was gold.
But as a LOT of the new apps and services require data then I have to look at the plans and make a stab based on expected monthly data usage...
I know, I know, how long is the piece of string......
What I am asking is can people give me a rough estimate of monthly data usage on any network with any apps enabled, I reckon with good and bad I can figure out what may be feasible for my selection.
email usage is light, web next to nothing (for now) and not sure about other services, I have wifi at home so would attempt updates and stuff there rather than OTA
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Hey
Well, not sure of my exact data usage, but it would be sure to increase 10 fold (it did for me at least coming from a blackberry). There is so much stuff that can be gained through apps that use data. Maybe you could tell us the various price ranges for the data plans and decide that way?
Aldo there are tons of apps that will monitor your data and give you alerts and such so the fear or unintentionnaly going over is slim.
Hope this helps.

Thats the problem from my end, none of the telcos are helpful as such, they range from 200mb to 1gb but are ALL different in price, so one charges x for 200mb on y cap and another is double for the same 200mb but a different cap
So what I needed was someone to say what they do on an average month, 2mb, 20mb, 784mb, 3.2gb etc etc, this way i can figure out the cort/benefit ratio of cap/plan v's qouta and extras
It seems to me that many apps I use give my flexibility in this area. The main apps I use that download data are configurable of how often to check for updates. For example, I can set my weather widget to download new info anywhere from every 15 min to every couple hours. Also, syncing with gmail and other google services can be turned on and off so you could only have it on when on wifi. Twitter and Facebook apps also have settings to change how often you have them refresh the data. So if you don't use too many apps or just set all of them to only update manually you can limit your data usage by a lot.
OK, can I just ask people to actualy state
HOW MUCH DATA YOU USE PER MONTH
Thank you.
my first month, i have no idea how but i used 3.3gb.
every month after that has been around just under 1gb, except last month when i had to tether my laptop because my home internet was out for a week, the data for that month showed 1.2gb.
I have two widgets, facebook and twitter that sync about every 2-4 hours, i adjust them some times to sync less and i manually sync them if i want to read and am bored. I have newsrob which syncs my google reader articles, sometimes i have that sync every 4 hours sometimes fully manual. I have background data turned on almost all the time and gps turned on always updating my location with latitude, i have gmail and an exchange account syncing for work using ssl. i have last.fm scrobbling all the music i listen to and stream music with it occasionally, not all the time. i browse the web on it quite abit whiel sitting at home and watching movies with the girlfriend as well as look up random facts and other things i come across day to day.
let me know if you need any other input!
I use on average somewhere between 900mb and 1.2gb
Thats streaming Pandora most of the time I'm in my car, using GPS maybe 2-3 times a week and pretty heavy data usage in other ways (i.e web surfing and apps)
I don't do much tethering or downloading of large files. I have tethered a few times but nothing that I would call average.
I used to use about ~2 GB when just using it for Pandora, hulu, and browsing. Now I'm at around 7 GB since I tether.
For comparison, I used 65mb on my bb bold 9000 and now 1gb on my n1. Mostly because its so fast! I do not really stream. I only browse, email, chat and some videos. Its a lot of usage from just browsing
before froyo i ran about 1-1.5 gb a month, now ive tethered a lot and started listening to more music so im up to about 4 gb

billing cycle: 7/20 - 8/19
data used: 36Mb
txt (sms to you non american types ): 16
minutes: 13
what I'm using that is data intensive:
google maps- hourly, with two 2 hour driving trips using it
gmail - it pushes all emails
email - check every 15 minutes, two additional accounts
maverick pro - uses gps and data
pandora - no usage this cycle, i usally stream at work, and i'm on vacation this week
normally, if i use pandora, it's for 4-6 hours per day, at roughly 1Mb / 15 mintues
there, hopefully you'll have an idea what a typical nexus user will burn through in a billing period.
I have a 500mb plan, and to date (over a year) I've only come close to that once.
I have Twitter refreshing every 10 minutes, GMail push, Email every 15, and Facebook every 30. Plus some web browsing (of relatively light sites). No video or audio streaming.
On average I'm around 250mb a month now, because we have no wifi at work. When I was in school (wifi on campus, and at home), I never went over 100mb. Usually less than 50.
~600MB monthly.
It consists of me tethering the laptop on the way to work and back ~2 hours a day, mostly. When I didn't use it and just surfed for fun, I'd get ~150MB monthly. When I didn't surf at all, the data apps put me at ~40MB monthly. I'm using Gmail, Gtalk and several smaller-scale apps like Astrid.
THANK YOU THANK YOU to those that actualy posted figures, the plans over here are rather stringent and no way could you support some of the figures you have indicated without incurring signifiacnt costs, I now have an idea that data costs are a priority something I have to factor in to the overall package, and unless the telco has an unlimited plan I have to read the fine print for excess charges VERY clearly.
Thank you once again
I hovered around 7-11gb a month when I was on att wireless. Their footprints issue great in Miami. I swapped to T-Mobile and they suck. Its horrible. I hardly ever touch my phone now. And it shows! I now hover around 300mb-800mb

(Q) Gps on Wifi only 7

I onow this is extremely noobish. However I have the 5 and wifi only 7. Believe it or not thre is not a lot on youtube or general searches n the wifi 7.
I have 2.2.2 stock n here and it has gps in the settngs but when ve been outside ve opened my navigation and the 7 never stops looking for a gps signal. My 5 s n att and thus has 3g. Gps woks great on it.
I did do the tweak of removimg the phone and telephony.apk. not sure f that wouldve messed anything up.

Ok, I did a little test this morning. I have the same DS7 wifi as you with phone.apk and telephony.apk removed and no other mod, running stock 2.2.2.
I was able to get a GPS signal. I used Google's Navigation app, it prompted me to install a text to speech app, which I did and the result was awesome! I now have a glorified GPS with text to speech for free. I did a test run and it guided me to my office without any problem. The GPS signal was picked up as soon as I got out of my house and stayed connected all the way to final destination, about 10 miles drive distance.
The only little caveat is that you need to have a constant connection to the internet so that Google map is downloaded as you drive. I was able to do this with a personal wifi hotspot.
I hope this answered your question. Blessings!!!

Actually, Google Maps app can now cache your directions so you can still use the GPS when you have no signal. There's also limited offline mode right now, with full offline mode coming soon.
I have heard that Google Maps can now cached maps, but I do not see this option in their Navigation app. The Navigation app does say that if you loose connection, it will continue to guide you as long as you don't deviate from the original route. Is this what they mean by map caching???

Actually you can do minor deviations and it will correct. I've purposely tried it out and it will recalculate for minor changes without data connection. For those looking to save maps is done in the mapping app and it's turned on under settings, Labs. It will save an area 10 miles around the center point.
These saved maps only work for maps. They will not work for navigation without a wifi or 3g data source. The full off line use is coming.

Proper way to carry LG p880 for a GPS track recording outdoors?

Ok, so having the amazing Blade for over a year and a half, i decided to go bigger and stronger, and got the p880 when prices droped acceptably. One of the reasons, was that Blade didn't have the memory or the cpu to give me a satisfactory use of gps navigation or gps tracking (for example, it had tremendous lag, and it forced closed apps very often).
Now i have it, everything ok, except that in Osmand, in using offline maps, it says at some points, there is not enough memory to load a portion of the map. There is about 250-300mb available ram at that point. I wonder if this is a bug or a limitation indeed of the phone's ram.
So, the things is i am testing the device in the city, before i go for the mountain hike using gps to record my hike. It locks ok outdoors, fast. The problem is, the minute i insert it in my pocket its gone. The lock is gone and the signal too. So, where exactly on the phone is the gps receiver located? Does it matter which pocket it is in? What kind of clothes i am wearing. How would i carry it during my hiking, in order to have a continuous signal? Should a particular spot, the top for example be completely naked to receive the signal, or something like that?
I use 4X for tracking my mountain bike rides.
Just today I had almost 3 hours of tracking without any problem.
But I use endomondo as a program.

Yesterday I put it in upper pocket of my backpack and recorded my first spring mtb ride. It last more than 4 hours and did not lost any moment.
I use Orux maps for years - it works excellent, even with my old HTC legend, but 4X has better reception and faster fix. I dont't see any memory problem - it is same with Orux and loaded offline map, tracking on, and when system only is running.
Two questions (for pierg75 and Marko_Sp) that might help the OP:
- those programs you mentioned are using offline maps, like the OP's?
- are you using AGPS, i.e. is your 3G data on or off?
- no offline maps
- yes agps is enabled (not sure how much this is used in a wood)
BTW I used in the past Locus with offline maps and I didn't have too many problems on the zte blade as well
If they put the software back on play, I'll give it a go next time I'm out.

I had problems when using MyTracks with the 4X HD... at high speeds (like in a car) it would miss many portions of the track. See my post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38963980&postcount=14
I have NOT yet tested extensively enough, but doing the same drive twice since upgrading to Jelly Bean... I did not have the track drop out at all. So if you're not yet on 20a official, perhaps you should try it?

Orux is able to download offline maps from many online map servers (Google, Hike&Bike, TopoOSM USA etc.) with 500mb limit what is more than enough for planned rides - battery of mob is limit, not the size of map, but I have spent only 20% on my 4 hour ride!. That offline maps can be stored and used on SD card. I use offline topo maps for my country from Croatian State Geodetic Administration - only have to create WMS URL, layers and minimum and maximum zoom, make selection of region and downoload over WiFi. It is very simple in fact.
Yes, I use AGPS, and 3G, as usual, but Orux does not require any, just GPS.
picture of Orux track with offline map and some analitics:
Thanks everyone for the info, the problem is i think that i never use data, in fact not only i have it disabled in the phone, i have called the company and asked them to turn off the switches on mobile data for my number. That way, even if it is enabled, by them, i can tell them that it was THEIR mistake and not pay. The reason i do these is that data is very expensive in my country, in fact i would almost pay the equivalent of 6 months of phone number contract, if data was enabled accidentally in my phone.
So, the question is concerning ONLY the use of GPS, with offline maps. So i guess this must be the problem. Perhaps i would have a clear gps signal continuously if i had the phone in my hand and my hand extended for the whole hike, but that is obviously not an option. So i still can not figure out what to do. Any ideas about a belt fitted case for the phone that leaves it essentially "in the open", so that gps will have a clear connection?
As for the memory problem in Osmand, it is the only program that created a memory problem so i guess it must be a bug or something.
I ll check out this endomondo and orux, but still have not figured out what to do for a succesfull gpx track recording (continuous) outdoors, with just gps enabled.

For a succesfull gpx track recording You don't need offline map, use blank map in Orux.
