Touchscreen seems to occasionally register taps as swipes - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically as the title says, often when typing (I use swiftkey) the phone will incorrectly register a tap as a swipe from my last type. This often results in a word getting entered before I am ready (often the wrong word) and its just generally annoying. Never experienced this with my last phone on swiftkey so I would be surprised if it was a software issues with swiftkey.
Anyone seen this or know whats going on? Any fixes? Its really a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance I would like to get solved.

I've noticed this as well. I've been using the Google keyboard for months, but just downloaded SwiftKey because of that same issue. However, it looks like it's not the keyboard as it's happened with SwiftKey also.
Sometimes when trying to zoom in on a photo the pinch to zoom doesn't work. It's like the double touch isn't recognized. Wonder if they're related?

The double letter issue - How many have this?

I've been having an issue with my Kaiser keyboard. When typing the same letter fast, not all the keystrokes are registered. For example, instead of "www.google.com" the phone often registers "ww.gogle.com", instead of "hello" it might register "helo", etc.
For whoever hasn't noticed such a problem, try the following, since it is particularly evident when you do this:
Type "WWW" or "AAA" really fast without using the Caps lock but keeping the Shift key pressed instead. Are all the keystrokes registered?
The following helps a bit but does not eliminate the problem:
Start -> Settings -> Buttons -> Up/Down Control
If you put the delay to minimum, it seems to make things better.
How many people have this issue? I've read people's posts complaining about this, but not a lot and I'm trying to figure out: Could this be a hardware issue? Should I ask for a replacement?
I have the problem, but I always associated it with more of a problem with the phone "thinking" (background app running, etc) and the background app making it skip. I will try the suggestion about Up/Down control and see if that helps and report back.
I am actually having the opposite problem.
Often i get double letters where I only pressed the key once ....
I have this problem, but I was just assuming it was user error (retardation?)
i definitely get it too, all the time... and i type well, dammit
I have that issue quite a bit. I actually exchanged phones because the 1st one the keys wouldn't click when pressed so I had MMMMMM and aaaaa qqqqqqqq all the time. the new one has the issues, but the keys seem to click and its not as bad.

I had the same issue as randomtask with my first tilt. Several of the keys didn't click when I pressed them so my finger automatically would hit them multiple times. My replacement is much better for that problem, but now I do get the occasional gogle. It has gotten better them more I have gotten used to the keyboard though.
I used to have this problem first got the phone-- maybe the first couple of weeks of use. I haven't noticed it in a long time though and just checked and it's definately not there anymore. I have the tilt and did flash the ROM and don't recall having had the problem since then but don't remember if it stopped happening before or after I flashed it.
It was really annoying. I'm glad it's gone.
I have a similar issue, but it's much more annoying IMO.
When I type fast, the spaces between words becomes really funky. If I hit the spacebar and then another character right after it, the character shows up on the screen before the space. It ends up looking like: Thisi s howa textm essagee nds upl ookingo nm yp hone.
There is definitely a problem with the phone reading input (and not my fingers). I sat there and pressed the same key and space in rapid succession for a few minutes trying to figure out the behavior. It seems like rapid input of space followed by character results in the output of the character followed by the space.
I was able to solve this issue by disabling the Suggest Words and Autocorrect options under the Input tab in settings.
I then typed a text message as fast as my fingers would allow and my Tilt did not miss any letters.
keyboard sensitivity?
I have a very strange issue with my keyboard. if i place my thumb over the P key and then hit the S key, i get a SP when i am trying to type a text message. There is also the same issue with the I and O keys and the X and Delete keys. It took me a couple of days to realize what exactly was going on but (unfortunately) i can reproduce the issue very easily. Is the keyboard supposed to be this sensitive or do you think i have a defective keyboard? I currently plan on replacing it but if i dont have to, i would rather not. I never had an issue like this on my 8125.
Thanks!

Doesn't really help. Using Dutty's Hybrid No 2 ROM produces the same results. Type a word and have the cursor at the last character of the word. Press space and a character in that order in rapid succession and you should be able to reproduce the outcome as easily as I can.
You have to go to the buttons option in settings. If you speed up the repeat speeds it WILL fix this issue. You have to play with it though because if you max it out it will end typing more repeat letters than you intended.

Tried this too. Same symptoms still exist. When you say speed up the repeat rate, are you talking about making the top bar go all the way to the left, and the bottom bar all the way to the right? I did this (though not putting them at the MAX, like two or three notches down).

I'm with klasikahl on this: it does make things better but it does not make the problem disappear
Alaiwy, you will want to try the following, if you think that the problem is gone:
Type "WWW" or "AAA" fast without using the Caps lock but keeping the Shift key pressed instead. I'll bet you'll notice the problem again.
I'm really dying to know if this is a general issue or it's just some devices that were produced...
I am now beginning to think that this is a ROM-specific issue.
I flashed Sleuth's 1.1 ROM and to my joy, my space-character rearrangement problem has completely vanished. For the record, I was previously using Dutty's No 2.

Same here...the problem that I was having was if I were to type "this is a test" I exprienced delays with my spacebar...it would spell out
"thisi sa t est". and it would do it EVERY single time. I uninstalled HTC Touch keyboard and keypad and it stopped. (Looks like TouchPal for me). However, on Dutty's Beta 1 I didn't experience this problem, but other WM6.1 roms I did. Of course with Dutty's I had to jump through hoops to get the keyboard and Touch Keypad to work cooperatively and maybe this "fixed" it...who knows. BTW I have the Tilt version of the Kaiser.

I haave had both problems but this one was more annoying. I had the space after the next letter problem mentioned above with Dutty's WM6.1 Beta. At first I thought I couldn't type, but once I uninstalled the xt9 cab that also fixed the Tilt's keyboard issue, this problem went away as well. The speed of the text all around seems faster now.
As far as the repeat letters issue, I have that as well, and haven't been able to get rid of it with any of the ROMs that I have tried.
I have the problem with the second letter of a double letter pair being occaisonally omitted. I have put the repeat rate at the highest setting and turned off autocomplete, etc., and still have the problem.
I have pondered this problem, and have a possible theory:
The hermes only had one switch under the space bar, but the kaiser has two. If you push one end of it and rock your finger you'll hear two clicks. About half the time I hit the space bar only one switch clicks, and the other half they both click. So clearly HTC must've compensated for this by putting something in the software that says if there are two spacebar entries within a certain (small) timeframe, ignore one of them.
Perhaps they did this and instead of making it spacebar specific, it applies to any character?
Just an idea...
I can't believe that HTC can ship what they call a high-end smartphone where a feature as basic as the keyboard working correctly isn't spotted during testing! Seriously considering sending my xda stellar back!

Touchscreen slowness

Ok so i am trying to determine what my problem is.. here are the symptoms. When i try and end a call i sometimes have to press multiple times or deliberately press and hold the end button and sometimes it doesn't respond pretty much at all. Also i am using go launcher and when i press icons that are in the dock bar they have the same issues. I also have similar issues when i text it's really annoying so is anyone else have similar issues?

Same here. I've noticed that to hang up it takes a deliberate double tap. Also, the screen will sometimes become inoperable requiring a reboot. This has happened three times since first getting it. One note if that out happened twice stock, and once with decrapped 1.1
Any body else seen this?

I haven't seen it anywhere else, but I have seen the double tap on the end button to end a call. Seems to happen frequently. A "feature?"
Either way, it's annoying.
Running Go Launcher as well.
To me, it seems like it takes the screen a really long time to wake up from being off, in all cases - for example, dial voicemail and put the phone to your ear. When you get the prompt to put in your PIN, take it away and the screen comes on, try to punch the dialpad button immediately and it just won't work. I tried it as I was writing this and had to triple tap the button.
Same thing with the lockscreen (still on the stock lockscreen for now). The screen will wake up and it takes a second or two to even start to register finger swipes. It's really annoying...
Speaking of phone lockup, I received a call a few days ago and the phone froze - I couldn't answer the call, or do anything, all the while the phone just kept ringing. Had to pull the battery. I'm still on the stock ROM.
Me too! I had a call and it froze. Battery pull as well. Also, forgot to mention I am using open home launcher.

Yep it's a bug either in LG's function to turn on and off the screen in Android, or the kernel drivers that enable/disable the touchscreen. There is about a 1 second delay to it.
I discovered this lovely bug while porting the AOSP lockscreen mod.
I'll run some more tests to see whether it's an android bug or a kernel bug. I'm betting it's android (something like the screen being turned on before the touch controller has had time to reinitialize itself, or something more complicated like a race condition of some kind...)
Either way, with cm7 around the corner, I don't think it's that big of a bug

Errrr Are you sure the Revo is getting CyanogenMod 7? Where did you hear this and more importantly when will we get it?

Since he is the one working on getting it ported over, I think he has the best idea, and the only rule of cm is no asking for etas ;-)

[Q] Keyboard always double clicks?

I've used so many keyboards, and they all seem to have this problem:
When i first click on a blank text field and the keyboard pops up, the first key that I touch usually thinks that I clicked it twice. No matter how careful I am to touch it once it just lags and does it twice.
Nothing else is laggy at all. And it never does it except for when I first bring the keyboard up/the first letter I type. Even if I wait a few seconds after bringing up the keyboard.
I have used stock keyboard, smart keyboard, thumb keyboard, and probably a few others. I doubt it's a application problem...
Using CM9 Official nightly 3/27
Also happened on alpha 2 and unofficial nightlies
Does this happen to anyone else? It's really frustrating.
I sometimes have this issue as well. Only it can happen at anytime.
I am using cm9a2 with hackers keyboard.

Keyboard freezing and stuck when typing the letter "o".

Hello.
I have a strange problem with my Note. I noticed this a few weeks ago and thought it might just fix itself automatically. However, it hasn't.
The issue is when using YouTube or Play Store. When searching for something the keyboard will freeze but only when the word begins with "O".
So for example if I search for "Opera Mini" on Play Store the keyboard will lock up. Same happens if I search for "Call Of Duty" on YouTube, the keyboard will lock up when I go to type "Of".
I've restarted my phone and tried all the usual fixes but nothing has worked so far.
This problem didn't occur when I first bought the phone, it only came on a few weeks ago so I'm not sure what triggered it.
If anyone else has come across this issue or heard about I'd appreciate some feedback.
Thanks.
FYI - I am running stock Android 2.3.6 with the stock keyboard.
I'm not sure whether my trivial problem is similar to yours. But I have experienced, yet very infrequently, that my Swype keyboard wouldn't type the letter "w" when the word start with it. I was able to close the app and back again and the keyboard works fine.
Honestly, I don't know the reason behind your weird problem. But why don't you try using another keyboard?
I've tried other keyboards but I just prefer the stock one.
I'm currently using Swype keyboard until I can figure out my problem.

Strange random lag, usually when typing

I really hate to bring such a general question here, but this has gotten to the point where it's making me not like an otherwise amazing device. I don't necessarily expect a full answer to the problem, but I figured it was worth asking
Since I got my N6 (say about 4 months now), I've had an odd problem where I'll get completely random crippling lag while typing. it'll let me keep typing and then after a few seconds the places I tapped will start to ghost type behind where me. At first I blamed the google keyboard and tried swiftkey, but it does the same thing.
This has followed me across several ROMs and kernels, and I'm really curious wtf is causing it. If anyone has anything to say on this, please post here about your experiences and solutions

Have you ever done a complete factory image flash? Wipe everything, start fresh.

Do you have magnification gestures on in the accessibility menu? That can slow typing down to a crawl because it is waiting to register 3 consecutive taps to magnify the screen.

Not sure if you've found a solution to your issue, but just a few weeks ago (ever since the 5.1.1 OTA update) I was suffering the same issue. I found wiping the cache partition using stock or custom recovery will do the trick. I just did this a few days ago and have not experienced any keyboard lag or goofy keyboard glitches since. Simply boot into recovery by powering down, then hold volume down and power together. Use the volume buttons to select recovery, and the power button to confirm it. You'll reach a screen with the little Android guy and text below it saying no command. First hold power, then press volume up. You'll see a list of options. Using the volume keys again, highlight wipe cache, press power to select. Wiping cache will not delete any of your settings or media. It will take a minute or two, then you can select restart from the menu options. Hope this works for you as it did for me.

Just found this post after a search as I get same issue. Have tried cache wipe, but comes back after a while. While this exhibits on the keyboard quite regularly, it also has crippling lag elsewhere where the phone becomes unresponsive for a more than a few seconds.
Currently running Marshmallow.
Anyone ever find what causes this?
I have the same problem, but I noticed that it only happens on landscape rotation.

Thank you! This was driving me nuts! I actually quite like the magnification gestures feature, but if it makes my keyboard lag then I am never using it again until it's fixed. This never used to happen before today.
