[Q] Unable to update - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, first I want state that I am not a dev, so I want to thank all the devs out there for making things possible for us reg users.
I am running TWRP v2.5.0.0, rooted.
HTC One M7 (AT&T)
Android 4.1.2
HTC Sense 5.0
Software # 1.26.502.15
HTC SDK API level 5.12
(currently backed up incase I brick)
I have 2 things I am seeking to solve. Any comments/feed back is greatly appreciated. If you provide me the steps that would make it easier.
1) updating app issue.
I am having an issue with updating apps. my HTC one M7 keeps telling me I don't have enough storage space. I checked i have total of 32 gigs cap with 18 gigs used.
I cleared my delvik/cache already. Every time i try to update google maps or youtube or anything, keeps bringing me to manage apps to uninstall to free up space
2) How to get rid of AT&T bloatware that is pre installed? (not too important issue, but wanted to know)
I use Titanium back up to uninstall hem, but they show up after refresh. Seems to be part of the phone and can't get rid of them.
If there is a rom out there without the bloatware, please link me to it and I will recover using twrp.

To remove bloat on a AT&T phone you need an insecure kernel - try elemental X or Bulletproof
you recovery and software / firmware are all 2 years old ...Why ??
Follow the instructions here and get your phone up to date

At the time i go the phone, all I did was unroot it. Nothing went wrong, everything was okay was able to dowload apps etc. Now I have problems updating the app it keeps saying my phone storage doesn't have enough space...which doesn't make sense since my m7 has 30+ gigs and I only used like 18. I am trying to figure out why and how to fix that...so to answer you my phone was working fine for 2 years and didn't see the need to fix what was not broken at the time.
PS: thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.

Nexus One, go back like from the origin

Dears,
I have a Nexus One that some months back I root follow some steps on this forums. All work perfect. But now, to get more easy updates I think in go back to like when I buy with the official OS and can receive and install directly the OTA updates because now not use too much the rooted advantages.
Exist a method to do this?
In the phone information show Android version 2.3.3 baseband version 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04 and Build number GRI40.
Any idea?
I already receive a OTA message to update to 2.3.4 but when say install the phone tell me that go to restart, after restart show me the Android System Recovery and a lot of options ( reboot, USB-ms..., etc, etc) and a error like not found one file (I not remember the name).
Is best unroot? Or exist any easy method to put the 2.3.4 (or latest version in the future) without need backup all the data, wait a lot to update, etc?
The OTA updates are simple and I never need backup the info before update.
Any help are welcome because Im lost :S
THANKS!
If I'm understanding you correctly. You want to go back to stock and receive updates through via google? If thats what you want to do.
Follow the instructions here. It will restore your phone to the original ROM it shipped with. Shortly after setting your phone back up you should receive updates fairly quickly. Last time I did it I was back up to current in a couple hours.
Thanks, but when say:
"Only if downgrading to stock builds older than FRG33, ONLY FOR AMOLED DEVICES - Revert HBOOT to older version.
******* WARNING - DOWNGRADING HBOOT ON SLCD DEVICE WILL BRICK IT !!! ******* EPF30 Attention - Amoled vs SLCD"
How I know what is my version of phone? I can know if is AMOLED?
Thanks!
If you use the FRG33 file it doesn't matter...
Just in-case you still want to know, you can check which screen you have by typing dmesg in a terminal emulator and scanning the results. AMOLED screen will show up as samsung_oled_panel SLCD will show up as something else...
Thanks!
Exist a easy method to get, for example now, the 2.3.4 version of Android without lost information, in simple steps for my Nexus One and without unroot the device?
Third option in this post, but without the first step:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13909618&postcount=2
Thanks guys!, I already downgrade to 2.1.1 and update by OTA to 2.3.4... Now think in root again ajajajaja. But now is more easy using the recovery that I have installed, its OK?
Yes it's a lot easier to root using recovery...
One extra doubt: after start with 2.3.4 the phone not have any information (like new one), but I found on my Market that exist a list of all my already downloaded applications as "installed" but on the phone not found this applications. The sync are active, but these applicaton not are autoinstalled again on the phone automatically and show as installed (that prevent that I can install again...) Any idea?

[Q] help - no su binary installed?

i have previously unlocked bootloader and rooted my device using the Hasoons all in one tool kit and then had been using ard 12.1.
I then fancied trying the latest GE 4.3 release (stock) which i downloaded and flashed and all seemed fine however when i went to check root was still there i have the icon but get a message saying that there is no su binary installed. I have tried to use the toolkit again to go back the root procedure in the hope i can re-install what ever is missing however for some reason now the tool kit comes up with an error message in the box saying waiting for device or device not recognized.
I have tried to sort the problem but now feel i am just going round and around in circles and really dont have the knowledge to put it right as im quite new to the flashing and modding side and dont fully understand all the terminology, im sure its probably something really simple to fix for those who know how so would really appreciate some advice.
My overall aim would be to be running the stock rom (or might even try the new arhd 4.3 ge) with root so that i can then use the volume + to wake mod as i find this really usefull as my power button is quite depressed and hard to use.

hello you are in need of the new 4.3 superuser.zip
http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/superuser-4.3-beta3.zip
if you are using CWM, when it asks to fix su upon reboot, select NO
Wow thank you!!!!!
You have no clue, or maybe you do, how lost I got trying to root my HTC One. This is all new to me, but this forum has helped massively. I found that the supersu zip I had was the older version when I already had 4.3 uploaded before rooting. This community rocks!
why do my gapps processes keep crashing?
NM forgot to full wipe
So I have the same issue - my only question is that I am running 4.4 now. Does this super user file still work or is there a 4.4 version?
Just use "SuperSu" if you face any root acces issues

Hi there, Im new to the rooting world, I have a htc one m7 from sprint trying to sim unlock it, as far as I know I unlocked the bootloader, tampered it, and rooted, but no access to super user so I can sim unlock it. I downloaded and installed this App that you mention, but still keeps saying no binary updated, and with this 4.3 version says there was an error installing superuser. Please help, I dont know what to do.
I was having this same issue on my Note 2 (4.3). I seem to have found a way to restore root that may help you as well.
I think this issue may be caused by the SU app & binary updates. Uninstalling the updates has restored root for me.
Go to:
Settings > More > Application Manager > All > SuperSU > Uninstall updates
(menu options may be slightly different on other devices)
This will roll back SuperSU and hopefully restore your root access.
Let me know if this helps.
Any updates on this? I'm trying to get root on an HTC One M7 that I just purchased and I'm running into the same error.
Thanks!

[Q] Bloatware Apps keep reappearing after crash

Hey guys,
I have been trying to uninstall all the bloatware from my HTC Butterfly S after unlocking the bootloader and rooting it. However, sometimes randomly while uninstalling the bloatware (like the Korean keyboard) with titanium backup, the device will crash and restart itself, and previously uninstalled apps would appear back again.
For example, i uninstalled 7digital, Google Korean Keyboard, HTC Sense Wechat (in that order) then the device would crash while uninstalling HTC Sense Wechat. After it booted up again, i found that my default keyboard would change back to HTC's own keyboard and that 7digital, Google Korean Keyboard and Wechat would all be found installed again.
Anyone else experiencing the same problems?
Edit : okay so restarting the phone without it crashing does the same things too..all the bloat apps came back :/
Edit2 : oh ya im using stock rom by the way.
I also tried to uninstall HTC Sense Webchat and had the same issues. I think this program is somehow connected either with Blinkfeed or integrated in the system, so you can't delete it from rom.
I unninstaled all the bloatware from my HTC One X once I rooted it. But then, I could not install OTA updates anymore. I had to get an old backup from my Nandroid, restore all the bloat just to be able to install the update. Was really annoying.
Now, I moved to one Butterfly S. This time, I plan to root and freeze all the bloat with Titanium Backup. Once and update is released, I can just go there and undo the freeze.
Did you tried freezing the apps you don´t want? Maybe it can prevent the crashing.

The system partition seems to be write-protected somehow. Any changes you make from within a running system are lost on reboot, even though you remount /system as read-write. In order to circumvent this, you can write down a list of APKs you want to remove, reboot into recovery and do it from there – in that case the changes are permanent.

I have certain doubts as to whether an OTA will work on any rooted Butterfly S if one gets released eventually. Butterfly S suffers from the same problem as One, i.e. certain apps come preinstalled in /data (see this thread for a list of those that were in /data/preload on mine) and the OTA update script checks their integrity as well, but they are wiped in the process of unlocking the bootloader.
Now, obviously, I made a backup of those apps, but that may not be enough, it's perfectly possible there were other things in /data as well and there's not really a way to find out unless HTC releases a RUU, in which case we can look into its contents.

So basically your saying that we should not unlock the bootloader and I don't think it make sense to unlock it because there is no s off

No, that's most certainly not what I'm saying. All I'm saying is that if you unlock your bootloader, any OTA upgrades might not work because some files from the original ROM are lost in the process. This is just unfounded speculation based on the fact that this was true for the One and the Butterfly S shows the same symptoms. Nevertheless, we have yet to see whether this is true or not since HTC haven't released any OTAs for the Butterfly S yet.
If you don't need root or custom recovery, feel free not to unlock your bootloader and stick to the vanilla stock ROM. Some of us need root, which means we did unlock our bootloader and are willing to bear the consequences.
I don't see any reason why not having a S-OFF exploit would mean that it's not worth unlocking. Just unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev is perfectly sufficient to install a custom recovery or ROM, from what I gather around the interwebs, custom kernels should be all right as well. If you want to argue that you need a custom splash screen then I'm willing to argue that you don't.
Anyway, this entire discussion is way off-topic already so I'll stop here.
This is an interesting discussion, although i'm away from my turf, as i got an HTC One - on second thought, it isn't so different from the Butterfly S. I was looking for a way to get rid of the bloatware and keep stock Sense UI. The problem, as has been discussed in the replies above - there is a "bug" when unlocking the bootloader from htcdev that causes some data to be wiped out. From what i've read all several similar cases, you will not be able to update via OTA. Basically, if you want to go back to stock with OTA support, you'll need to download a stock rom matching your device's region and restore that onto your device. I personally don't think it's worth it, as HTC will be releasing 4.3 soon (by the end of this month, according to leaks).
However, i was hoping to find an app (much like what already exists for the Galaxy S4) that would easily disable or block bloatware apps, without uninstalling them (that wouldn't be possible without rooting anyway). I'm really hoping that such an app exists for the One or Butterfly S, as i've been able to manually disable apps running in memory through Settings > Apps > All and i've noticed significant improvements, especially in the AnTuTu benchmarks. An automated way of doing that would have been really awesome.

[Q] Used M7 has preload files missing (Sense 6 OTA problem)

Hi, I require assistance. bought this used unit of M7 (normal edition) a few months back. Totally new to the Android scene before then.
It came with 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5, I had assumed it was untampered with and is fully stock.
Software version is 4.20.707.6, Asia WWE. CL308312 release keys (whatever that means)
kernel 3.4.10-g499e571
So when I had tried to update it via OTA to HTC Sense 6 (file size 666.06MB, what the.. Satan?)
I'd go through it for the first 30% and then it'd be in a red triangle with exclamation mark, which then made me press the volume and power button and got this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
showing that soundhound_freemium is missing, uhh...
It would then boot back normally and go back to the normal Sense 5.5. But I do want the Sense 6 badly and get this issue solved.
I was pretty dumbfounded with this issue as I am new to Android and everyone else is receiving their updates smoothly.
Now I choose not to proceed without the advice of XDA forumers, I wish to ask of what is the next step for me? I came across with the explanation that I'd need to do an RUU to get back to stock? Feeling pretty much dumber from that point on, there are so many RUU files around that I do not know which one I should be using? Any help on this is appreciated.
Steps done so far:
Factory reset from settings
Factory reset from recovery mode
Installing soundhound from Play Store (yea.. no difference)
Continuously attempting it at least 11 to 13 times, still the same thing over again.
BTW: I seem to be getting the app called WeChat every time I reset my phone, I wonder why... I know it's a messaging app but didn't know it'd come with the phone pre-loaded.. uh..
oh and oh, apart from OTA, any other way for me to install it from PC or something? I remember being able to update via iTunes instead of OTA for a newer version of iOS, although of course that was iOS, just wondering if it were possible for the Android as well. Hmm.. oh well
I would really appreciate all the help I can get, really want the Sense 6 UI to test, thank you very much!

firstly on which carrier you are? as you said you tried like 11-13 times but still no luck,well in that case root your device and then install sense 6 rom. I know you are new to android but watch YouTube videos couple of times on how to root HTC one and then install any custom rom.
regarding we chat I read it's preloaded app in the sense 6 update so May be it's just save that app not the whole sense 6 software.
try to factory reset the phone and then update.

I just checked and found out the update has started rolling out for Asian region as few of the Indian users & China regions are receiving updates but not all of them. well if you are not comfortable rooting your device I would advice to wait for couple of days & try again later as may be current update is not getting installed on your device. May be HTC fixes these in coming days. As far as i remember they don't provide full fledge update in the world instead they do roll out updates region wise like that they keep on improving any drawbacks occured in previous regions. so till then patience my friend
or else try going to htc store and ask their help,they might flash the sense 6 Rom or can tell you what exactly is the problem(if there is any) .

Ya, I cannot find a RUU for you to flash so that your device is completely stock. Rooting etc. isn't required.
Best you can do is this:
Flash TWRP recovery 2.6.3.3
restore the nandroid backup from here http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-twrp-nandroid-backup-cid-htc__044-_-4-20-707-6-asia-wwe-zip/
Then flash the stock recovery from here http://d-h.st/jTn
Then check for the sense 6 OTA and install.
NOTE: You will likely loose data doing this, backup first.
I would also wait for more replies today, @alary , @nkk71 or others may have additional information to help

the OTA won't install no matter what you try; it is failing the check on the /data/preload app(s)
at one point your phone was bootloader unlocked and S-Off, and the previous owner didn't do a very good job at putting it back to 100% stock, and unfortunately there is no RUU for 4.20.707.6 or higher (as far as i can tell), so there is no "easy fix" for this.
if you want to return to stock (and be able to receive OTAs), you're going to have to unlock bootloader, achieve S-Off (if possible??), and follow one of the return to stock guides (I have one in my signature).
or use a custom ROM.
You have a journey ahead of you, so time to do some research and reading.
Good Luck

Good day! Thank you for your time, I have read lightly on your super guide, however at this point I believe it might be easier for me to just install another custom ROM instead, not especially keen on getting official OTAs, may I ask if I can just install cyanogenmod 11 (or other ROM you'd recommend) at this point? Is it possible? Thank you!

Ya, I cannot find a RUU for you to flash so that your device is completely stock. Rooting etc. isn't required.
Best you can do is this:
Flash TWRP recovery 2.6.3.3
restore the nandroid backup from here http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-twrp-nandroid-backup-cid-htc__044-_-4-20-707-6-asia-wwe-zip/
Then flash the stock recovery from here http://d-h.st/jTn
Then check for the sense 6 OTA and install.
NOTE: You will likely loose data doing this, backup first.
I would also wait for more replies today, @alary , @nkk71 or others may have additional information to help

Hi, I'm not sure if I should attempt this? As nkk71 has said that this might not be an easy process.. Hmm.. Actually to be honest in not especially keen on getting OTA, I prefer the stock Android experience and stuff, not a fan of blinkfeed, should I just get cyanogemod 11? As I understand there is an installer for it right? A step similar to jail breaking iOS devices by using a simple installer, perhaps?

Hi, in light to the possibility of my phone being bootloader unlocked before, I doubt the service centre would assist me in getting the OTA. maybe I'll give it a try, but thank you for your suggestion. I appreciate it. Everyone around me is getting the update fine though, I'm sure I'm an isolated case.

wekcome and good luck to whatever you do. don't be disheartened by others getting update, just learn to root n install custom sense roms with their amazing tweaks for eg- ViperOne Rom.

Most likely ill learn how to root and install custom rooms soon. however I have one more question, as my main interest is now cyanogenmod, and they have an installer for it:
1) the installer doesn't need a rooted phone, so does that mean the installer will do the rooting for me?
2) the installer states that it is recommended for the phone to be in stock android, is my current version considered stock? Although not 100% stock as it doesn't have the preloaded apps?
nkk71 said:
the OTA won't install no matter what you try; it is failing the check on the /data/preload app(s)
at one point your phone was bootloader unlocked and S-Off, and the previous owner didn't do a very good job at putting it back to 100% stock, and unfortunately there is no RUU for 4.20.707.6 or higher (as far as i can tell), so there is no "easy fix" for this.
if you want to return to stock (and be able to receive OTAs), you're going to have to unlock bootloader, achieve S-Off (if possible??), and follow one of the return to stock guides (I have one in my signature).
or use a custom ROM.
You have a journey ahead of you, so time to do some research and reading.

it is not true that someone must have caused this issue unlocking.
I have the same problem and I'm the first owner and my unit is completely stock. Mine fails in settings.apk

interesting, but weird, I could understand the /data/preload apps but settings.apk is part of /system/app .... that should definitely not happen... and impossible to change without root / unsecured kernel / custom recovery.
maybe you should contact HTC and let them know
EDIT: maybe you should check the SHA-1 on /system/app/settings.apk and compare that to the updater-script
Hi, I also have this issue. How about if we copy /data/preload from the OTA.zip itself (after downloading)? or from an older OTA.zip
I tried that, but on a certain app, it says unexpected content... (e.g: HTCSoundRecorder.apk). Does the OTA check the apk MD5 or something?
I really want the OTA, because I can't S-OFF right now (firewater whelp, cpu rev 003). HTC__622, x.708 rom.
same issue
i have exactly the same issue. mine was cid 332. latin american m7 htc one sense5.5 hboot 1.56
on update to sense 6 its stuck on 30 % with red triangle. once open their is message preload not found tunein.apk missing.
after 1.5 month the update available for my cid but cant install it. i unlock by htcdev but still s-on and not rooted. i reset factory setting from recovery \ bootloader \ phone and problem still the same.i dont want custom ROM
i check with local htc. they told me to check with america HTC help line as my phone is from american region. i dont know why i got latin american region phone in middle east. thanks to online store. HTC American region just waste my days and after all the serial and model detail they told me since you are in middle east visit their branch in Qatar. how i should visit qatar for fixing phone to get sense 6?
well check in dubai service center they told me that motherboard need to replace cost 40% of phone. since i unlock by htc itself i still need to pay for 3 month used device.
i am exhausted.

This is actually the easiest way to do this, but you must get hold of the current software number OTA on your phone, not the one you are trying to install.
so if you currently have 4.22.401.11 for instance, you must grab this same OTA and pull data/preload and its contents, which is all of the missing apps etc, from that OTA, copy to your phone, CHANGE THE PERMISSIONS, restart your phone and re-run check for updates.
nb, you must also have stock recovery on your phone for OTA's to work.

Satan?)
I'd go through it for the first 30% and then it'd be in a red triangle with exclamation mark, which then made me press the volume and power button and got this:
showing that soundhound_freemium is missing, uhh...
Install odexed zip in twrp will fix 100%
EDIT: added bootloader image

[Q] Telus HTC Desire 510 - problems removing software from device

Hey,
Wondering if somebody could help me out. I purchased a Telus HTC Desire 510. The bootloader has been unlocked, TWRP installed, SuperSU root access. I installed Titanium Backup. I uninstalled system software such as Twitter, Facebook, services etc, and have noticed that when I restart the phone, the software comes back.
Can someone explain to me why the O.S. is doing this? It's Android kitkat. I have noticed in any file manager that it defaults to and emulated folder etc //sdcard/emulated. Also thinking it might have something to do with HTC software pre-installed //dumby proof backup software? In the past on any Android device, after unlocking and rooting I've never had this problem. Starting to fumble me...
Thanks

Hi, unfortunately I cannot help you at the moment but I will try to look up your problem. In the mean time, can you please create a stock backup from your ROM and make it available. This would be very helpful for many of us how are working on the VM / Sprint version of this device. Thanks in advance.

Hey,
Thanks for the reply. I created a backup with TWRP, approx. size 2.5GB unzipped in a folder a few days ago. I will try to get it online /zipped/compressed I geuss to a reasonable size.
I do see your VM/Sprint roms available. Unsure whether to try them as it's a different carrier? Telus runs on GSM LTE 4 1700/2100Mhz band 4. Could always revert back but I don't want to wreck the phone.
A great little phone. Still very new.
I see some roms say ''write protection removed'. Would this have something to do with the stock software coming back on boot? Ie . facebook etc. I always assumed having SU rights basically removes write protection. Who knows.

Since there is no S-OFF for this device, you'll need a kernel with write-protection removed... That's why the apps you remove keep reappearing upon reboot.

Thanks for the response. I went ahead and flashed the Cricket kernel on the device and it worked. Being a Telus device it seems to make no difference. I will check and make sure 4G LTE still works - if the kernel even has anything to do with it?
Glad this worked as there is a tonne of garbage on these phones that I'd like to get rid of. I might go ahead and try a custom rom - with the HTC software removed - as it seems to cause some issues when removing (htc software) from Titanium Backup.
Question as I'm curious- has anyone figured out a way to unlock the governor for the CPU/GPU. I think this config would be a prime candidate to mild overclocking.

Hi, I do not think so, but I am not 100% sure. So far, for Cricket Kernel with Write Protection Removed v1.0, Ondemand was set as default governor and all Stock Governors was Enabled.

The TELUS device is GSM, so likely the Cricket Kernel with write-protection removed will help you. Look under Android Development for it.
Sorry all.. realized this was a solved thread.
Did you install a Write Protect removed Kernel/image? That could be the reason. By the way, would you happen to have a TWRP stock backup that you make available for us? We're trying to get the VM/Sprint variant running on a GSM network, but so far we have not been very successful.
