[Q] Cannot transfer file > 4GB via MTP - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my nexus 6 yesterday, I've downloaded the latest Android USB drivers as well as the SDK and the phone is successfully recognized.
I have a problem when transfer a file larger than 4GB (eg. HD videos) from my windows laptop to my Nexus 6 via MTP
It just hang and not responding. No issues if file size is less than 4GB.
(my device rooted and non-encrypted btw)
I think it's not the file system problem as it was ext4 and I can have a single file that larger than 4GB available in the device.
For now I just fix it by zip the file into several parts, transfer to n6 and decompress it, Which is really annoying.
Tried some wireless transfer like AirDroid, SuperBeam but the speed is not satisfied, it takes about half an hour for a 4GB file
I think the problem is MTP. Is anyone else facing this issue?
Any Solution? Please Help.
Thanks

why are you transferring those files to your phone? they are files that need to be installed in your computer/laptop.

I usually have boring times when travelling to my workplace (It takes so long because of traffic jam in rush hour)
I think it would be great to watch a movie in n6 as my laptop is too heavy to bring outside. But most of HD movies are >4GB.
Do you have the same issue? I wonder is it just me facing this problem.

i believe that you are limited to anything under 4GB for a file transfer. of course you can try adb sideload or adb push.
movies i understand, but why transfer the sdk and drivers to your phone is what i dont understand. and i never installed the whole adk, just adb for dummies, which was only 36mb.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll try:fingers-crossed:
Sorry if I make a misunderstanding in my words. I didn't transfer sdk to my phone,
I just give a background that I've installed all the SDK and drivers to clarify that my device is successfully connected and recognized.

Just tested transferring the same file with my friend's Samsung Galaxy S6 and Nexus4( KitKat ParanoidAndroid ROM )
And things are working fine, I can transfer the file(~6GB single file) to both S6 and Nexus4 without any problem/hang using MTP.
So I think the problem is not MTP anymore.
Is the issue is about N6 file system or is it just my device having this issue?
Any help?
Thank you.

USB Transfer Problem. Help!

Hi all, can anyone sort this -
When i connect via usb i choose 'disk drive' to transfer files/music etc to the phone. Everty time i try to transfer anything it says on the PC (windows xp) 'cannot copy xxxx - the path is too deep'
Has anyone else had any problems or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
My first reaction is to say that wherever you're trying to copy from or too has a long pathname. Are you trying to copy individual files or whole folders, and where are you trying to copy from/to (e.g. My Documents)?

It doesn't matter how long the filename is it still says it. I've tries individual files and full folders but still the same. And i've tried copying from/to all sorts of different places but still no joy???
Hmmm. Maybe the way that Windows is transferring files is malfunctioning. This is definitely an advanced problem, which requires an expert.
*Waits for expert*
First of all, try another USB port. If that doesn't work, try this, in order. stop after the diamond works:
1- uninstall/reinstall activesync, then try accessing files with it.
2- Stop the Diamond usb drive by clicking the safely remove device icon. Then plug it again.
3- Uninstall all USB Root hub in your windows device manager, then reboot computer.
4- Hard Reset device.
5- Reinstall Windows
6- Return Device.
Can you try moving a file name with 8 chacters or less from your c:\ to the phone? Eg c:\song.mp3 to your phone
Also, what OS are you using? What file system does the phone 'disk' show up as in windows?

It shows as fat32. ?
this simply means the files are under a folder tree with too deep or too long with characters. such as:
C:\My Documents and Settings\Andrew Loh\Documents\my structural folders\andrew loh\scanning\pdf\finanacial documents\banking stuff\hong kong bank\bank statement\date 2008-06-09\page 1\200806091211224412.pdf
Simpliest thing first.....take your diamond to another computer.....confirm if it's computer problem or diamond problem

It seems related to FAT system I guess.
Could you try to format the disk from PC when connected as DISK mode and try to copy file or folder again?
This might be helpful.

Right - i've tried to transfer files from a different pc via 'disk mode' and it worked fine.
I can transfer stuff from mine via active sync but it takes ages transferring albums etc. It must be some setting on my computer causing the problem, although i don't have problems transferring things to sd cards etc. Any ideas?
For the love of God...
Hi All,
This seems like a very old problem but as far as I can tell, was never resolved or someone didn't share their solutions with the rest of us lovely newbies!
Unfortunately for me I am now having the same problem and after searching the forums it led me to this thread (along with two others that didn't have any difinitive answers either). When trying to copy anything that is within a folder from my comp (be it from a partitioned drive or the desktop of the root C: drive) I get the error "Cannot Copy ****ath is too deep".
After much trawling on the internet I found some third party software that should have solved the problem. No such luck , when using that I get a "semaphore timeout error". Next I try to direct extract from a .rar file to the internal memory and it tells me the reason it can't complete is that "the disk may be full".
As it stands now; I've formatted my phone's internal storage (and then had to transfer all programs one by one back over from my comp), enabled DMA transfer from the Device Manager in Windows XP and still no luck at all.
Could someone please shed some light on this as (as you could probably tell by the long winded post) I'm at my wit's end with this despite loving the phone in general!
Cheers in advance,
Night
I also have the same problem,
When i use activesync, big files like movies can only be put on the device itself, not the internal memory of 4g.
When i use the diskdrive option, the computer sees it als an usb storage, but files cannot be transferred, because of the "path is too deep" error.
in dutch it is called "pad is te lang", any options?
Also does someone know where to buy the official extended battery in Holland, because bol.com cannot deliver and other sites are way expensive.
Ok, just fixed it.
I turned off the activesync software in windows.
Connected the device to my usbconnector on the back of the pc (a 2.0 usbdrive)
Then it worked! Now 755 mb of .mp4 movie on the device...
i dont know if someone still got such a problem. I got it today and solved it with flashing an other rom on it from the Ruu.

Can't see Internal Storage>DCIM>Camera from my PC

Any photographs that I take with the cameras on my N6 are placed in the directory Internal Storage>DCIM>Camera.
However, when I connect my phone to my PC, I cannot see this directory in Windows Explorer on my PC - all I can see is Nexus 6>Internal Storage>DCIM (which has a subdirectory .thumbnails in it).
It doesn't make any difference whether I have the phone set to "Use USB for File Transfers" or "Use USB for Photo transfer (PTP)".
However, if I use ES File Explorer Pro on my phone, then I can see the Camera subdirectory (and I can see the .JPG files within that directory). I can also use ES File Explorer to copy the .JPG files from the Camera directory into a new directory that I have created in Internal Storage. I can then see this new directory (and the copies of the .JPG files) in Windows Explorer on my PC.
Any suggestions as to how I can get my PC to see the Camera directory?
(Phone is a Nexus 6, rooted, running 6.0.1 MOB30D and Cataclysm. PC is running Windows 10).
boo in twrp recovery, connect phone to pc,mount internal storage and see whether you can see on pc or not.

Thanks. Yes, that works - I didn't even need to mount the Internal Storage. I can see the Camera directory and copy files from it to my PC.
Not sure what that tells me, though.
I use this app Media.re.scan. Depending on how a file is saved the media journal may not be updated which makes certain things not see the new files namely MTP and PTP functions in android. Run that app and tell it to scan and it'll make all new files show up.
I have a Samsung np700z series running W10 with 2 USB 3.0 ports and a 2.0. I've always had trouble with the 3.0 ports on W7 W8 and ten. They work fine for anything else except cause the problem you describe. Using my 2.0 I don't have nearly as much trouble. I know the Samsung hardware and windows has this issue and it's never been resolved. Sometimes it takes a few plug unplugs and sometimes it doesn't recognize it right away. This problem has persisted from a note 2 to N6, from KitKat to N which leads me to believe it's not the phone or phone OS. Fwiw.

What system are you on? On Mac you might need to install the android file transfer tool. If on a different system just try googling it, there's loads of help out there.
https://www.android.com/filetransfer/
If using the command line then adb is reliable. Googling how to setup adb should help.
I found the issue and it was driver related but at first i though it was the phone
To solve the problem of transferring files from the computer (Windows 7 ) Copy the file from the computer into the folder of images in the mobile storage , tried the way and succeeded with me, if you can not find a folder for pictures taken pictures with the camera will show you folder

Phone not seeing files moved from PC

I just got the Prime R1 HD 16gb today and did TWRP and root. The only issue I've had is for some reason if I move a file onto the phone from my PC with a USB cable, it wont show up. E.G. If I move a file to my downloads folder, it wont be there, but if I download the same file through the phone from the internet it works. I can still see the files I've moved onto the phone from the PC if I use a file explorer, but it wont let me do anything with them. I tried going into the TWRP menu and switched the system off of read only thinking that may help, but it seems to have not done a thing. Complete beginner when it comes to this kind of thing if it isn't obvious. Any ideas?

That sounds familiar to the mtp "bug" Android has had for years.
The media storage database does not update when files are added from mtp.
Some work around that are listed are to use USB transfer instead. (Not used that one before)
Disconnect usb cable clear the data if the media storage app and force close it, then reconnect usb is should rescan the media and rebuild database.
Or just a reboot(I have done this and it usually works)

Hidden files somewhere...

I have a Note 9 Exynos dual sim, stock Android 9.
I used a new video software and recorded something important that saves into folder /storage/emulated/150/video
I can not find this file anywhere, possibly because I am not rooted? The adb pull command doesn't work either.
I can see and play the file from the apps internal gallery but that is it....I can't upload to onedrive or transfer to PC.
What needs to be done to get this file from my phone to PC?
Thank you for your help.

go into your file manager and move it to another folder or your external SD card. If you can move it internally, you should be able to view it from your PC and therefore transfer it. If you cant move it internally (cant imagine why you wouldnt be able to) then youre hosed. But that sounds like a unicorn situation.
Thanks but I cannot see it in any file manager I have checked so far. I only see it in the Apps own gallery...

Is the app a secret too?
It's called Quick Video Recorder. It's great for one button instant record function... But it isn't great if you want your videos off your phone it seems ?
Can I root safely without losing my data? From what I've read online rooting removes knox encryption and Samsung Pay and this can't be reversed... Is that correct?
SOLVED!
I solved this by putting the file manager app into the secure folder where the app is located. Then I could navigate to it. Makes sense really.
