Nexus 6 Reboot/Optimize Apps after 5.X update - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I got quite a serious problem. Since i updated to 5.1 my phone sometimes suddenly restarts, followed by a message which says "optimizing apps", which ranges from 30 to 150 apps. At first, it was no big problem, now it occures nearly every 10 minutes, so currently i can't really use my phone.
What i tried to do:
Factory reset, reflash 5.0 - 5.1.1 (every single image available)
The problem is still there.
Now my question, is it a Softwareproblem, which will be updated soon (should i try Android M (what about the warranty?))?
Or is it quite a serious hardwareproblem (i read somewhere that it could be because of overused RAM modules)?
I tried to use the searchengine, but i didnt find a specific thread in this subforum.

The optimising is a software issue caused by a random reboots. The reboot itself could be caused by anything though

Thank you for your quick reply. I continued reading and as it seems there are quite a number of users with the same problems as me. Although no one has gotten a solution till now. It doesn't matter if it's a Nexus 4, 5 or 6 but all the Nexusphones seem to be affected once updated to 5.1 or newer.
Unluckily sending it in to repair is not a good solution because they told me it would take 2-4 weeks which is not possible for me... How can Google not release a proper update after 5.1.1 which fixes it? Are they so focused about Android M? I still can't overcome myself to install the Android M because i fear to lose my warranty.

Dude, it's a Nexus. Warranty isn't an issue as long as you return to stock and relock before a warranty claim.
If flashing a factory image didn't fix it, either you're not wiping or formatting the cache correctly or you have a hardware issue.
Don't be so quick to blame Google when thousands of others, myself included, have taken the update without issue.

I did the factoryreset via fastboot, also i used the nexus toolkit to do a proper stock reset so i don't quite get how it could be an incorrectly done reset. So the hardware just breaks during the updateprocess?

I am usually quite quick in blaming others if there are also many people with excactly the same problem, sudden reboots with app optimization right after the update to 5.1 or 5.1.1, some even before at 5.0 or 5.0.1.
I'm going to try the Android M Update, maybe that will help.

Personally, I'd boot to bootloader and do:
fastboot format cache

Already done and i also reflashed the whole cache image. I hope the Android 6 Update will help solve my issues. The problem is, that i usually get really upset about little stuff like that just because i don't get why it's happening.

I updated monday evening to the Android M Preview, for now it only restarted once to, as it said, install a update (?), since then no reboot at all. It worked like a charm yesterday. I really hope the problem is fixed that way.
Just wanted to let you know if you have a same problem.

Thinking about lollipop upgrade

im pretty happy with kk, but i do want to be on 5.0, so i just wanted to make a few thing clear first.
1. if anything goes wrong with flashing a captured ota, how to restore my kk as it is now? will simply restoring a twrp backup do the trick on any stock rom?
2. where can i find the stock rom? the motorola site links arent working for me.
3. the quicksettings panel. is there a way/mod/app/ that will let me pull down quicksettings with one swipe like on cm and with gravitybox?
4.i really like to be able to customize the quicksettings, is that possible?
5. are there any bugs that seriously affect most users?
i am planning to root immediately so root only mods are fine.
im on a rooted unlocked bootloader xt1063,
thanks for your time,!
1. Just flash the stock ROM via fastboot.
2. I guess are some links on the Development section.
3. in 5.0, unfortunately not.
4. I guess no :/
5. Only a bootloop that happens with the newest versions of SuperSU (the only versions that works with 5.0), no major bugs..
Sent from my XT1063 using XDA Free mobile app
thanks for your fast response
is there a fix for said bootloop yet? can you show me a link?

When I ran into that problem I just hard reset (hold power button until it reboots) then let it run the course. After another reboot it came up to the lock screen and all was well. I have not had any issues since.
That said, I suspect if I had just left it for a few minutes without the hard reset it would have been fine. My tendency (as is the case with most people in these forums) is to be impatient, and jump the gun before things are completed.
The first reboot after installing Lollipop takes a while so don't get impatient.
I am using an XT1063.

Try pulling down with two fingers instead of one- I've heard that this is the shortcut for the quick settings. (I don't have a device w/ 5 to try.) I think Google has also made the tiles in the quick settings dynamic and "smart" based on what you use most often. I tend to prefer having a static view and knowing exactly which ones are present (and in the same place!), but I won't know until I actually use it more.
I have the US GSM variant (XT1064) which came preloaded with 21.11.23. The OTA I've found only applies to 21.11.17 (the original release), and I've not had any luck downgrading. Good luck in your Lollipop quest!

yes that works, and has been since 4.3, on my custom rom devices it just is not so comfortable on a 5" device i was thinking more of something like pull down from right.

Don't need it now, but good to know should I have to reflash in the future. Thanks for the info. :good:

Dead Turbo?

So I was running CF 1.3 base for quite a while with no issues. Two days ago my phone shut down on me and would not boot. I wipe everything multiple times. I wiped cache. I did a factory reset, nothing... I wiped again. Nothing.
It gets past the Motorola logo and then just sits at the boot screen. A couple of times it would say updating android, it would finish, but then it would go right back to the boot screen. After about 8 hours it finally booted and I used it all day yesterday. This morning my issue is back. I've flashed different images to see if it has something to do with 1.3. It's all the same. I think I might try to go back to kit kat. It seems to be a software problem, but I am starting to think that something most be wrong with my hardware.
I found this thread: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/b0021413e7
I think my phone is shot... Any ideas?
When I had my Razr Maxx I had an issue that was similar and nothing I tried would fix it. Factory reset cache wipe flashing different roms nothing. Finally I decided to factory restore it with RSD Lite and after that the problem went away and I was able to do everything again like normal. I don't know why a factory reset wouldn't fix it and that did but it did.
Thanks. That is my next step. Do you know where I can find the RSD image?
Is this what I need? http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...quark-stock-firmware-moto-maxx-droid-t3063470
Do I need to worry about flashing radios and stuff back to 4.4.4?
Seems to be. Honestly I've used it on many Motorolas in the past but I haven't read much about using RSDlite on the turbo. I would just do some googling around I'm sure you'll find it

This just happened to me yesterday. Long story short, I have a strong suspicion that something about the recent Moto Actions update is breaking our phones for reasons that I describe here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/help/complicated-problem-restore-doesnt-help-t3184251. I managed to fix it, but I re-broke it because I'm an idiot and the method I used before isn't working. If you get it fixed and get your 1.3 CF image back up and running, I would strongly recommend against allowing the Moto Actions update. I have a feeling that we're going to be hearing more about this soon from other people.

That makes sense, after I finally got mine going, I updated Moto Actions and all the other apps it crashed again in about 12 hours. If I can finally get it to boot again, I think I am going to test your theory. If you figure out how to get it booted again, please share!
Edit, which rootjunky image did you flash? SU2-12?

I did get it booted again. I flashed the kitkat update (not the stock, stock update 1, which is what you should be on if you're using mofo) file on the firmware thread that was posted here using the version of RSDlite that was posted there. The key is just to wait a really, really long time. Even if the screen goes black, it could potentially still be booting, especially if the back of the phone gets warm. I left it plugged in, let it get to the boot animation and left the house for several hours, and when I got back it appeared to be functional, but things were slow and choppy at times and my home button didn't work. The settings menu from the pull down menu didn't work either. I had to access settings from the app drawer. I tried a factory reset from the settings menu, and that just re-broke everything. So now I'm back at square one. I re-flashed the same image using RSDlite again, and now I've waited about 10 minutes and I'm still looking at the boot screen, which at this point is normal since the problem occurred.
I got a hold of an old copy of the Motorola Sensor Services apk. As far as I can tell, this is the apk that is replaced by Moto Actions, which according to Google Play is only compatible with 5.0 and above. My plan for tonight is to wait until the thing decides to boot, attempt to start the stock Sensor Services app and get it to do the sensor firmware uninstall that I mentioned in my other post. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to install the apk that I found and see if I have any more luck with that. I'll report back here when I get a chance to do that. Let me know if you figure out a solution.

Yeah, I used SU2-12.
I followed the procedure outlined here to go back to stock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6avEPGWB8E0 I used the SU2-12 file, but I lost everything... Thanks for the help. I hope there is a fix for this soon! I'll test your idea about MOTO Actions and report.
Edit: Well, I thought my phone was booting when I wrote the above, but it has been 30 minutes and it has not booted...
So, I can get it to boot - although it is not easy and it takes me like 30 minutes and I haven't found a full proof method yet, but after it goes to sleep I have to start the process all over. It has been a frustrating 3 days.

I think you are onto something. I'm currently on 4.4.4 and it is bone stock. When I go into the Play Store it shows that I have Moto Actions installed, but when I click on the app it says that it is not compatible with my device. I've tried wiping the data from the app, force closing it, and clearing the cache. None of that has prompted me to uninstall the sensors. By the way, I found the Moto sensors app and tried doing the same thing, no luck.
So, I think I have the 5.1 Moto Actions installed still, which is causing the 4.4.4 image to freak out. I've thought about trying to go official 5.1 and see if that fixes it, but since I have a replacement on the way, think I might just leave it be - unless someone (like you) figures this thing out.

I ended up getting a replacement from Motorola too. If it has 5.1 on it, I'll sell it and get one with 4.4.4. Thanks a lot for the tip, by the way. I might still work on it just as a hobby, but I'm out of ideas. Of all the many, many devices I've tinkered with, this is the first one that I ever permanently messed up, so I'd like to fix it as a matter of pride, but I now only have 48 hours to do so. After looking at logcats, the partition table of the phone and the androidmanifest.xml of the motorola sensor services apk, I'm pretty much certain that this app writes those sensor drivers to a partition other than the ones that get flashed when we up/downgrade (ie system, boot, recovery, etc.), which is why these processes don't fix the problem. Theoretically, if I knew which partition that was, I could find someone with a working Turbo who could dump that image, and if I get lucky and it's a partition that isn't sig checked by the bootloader (like the radios, for example), I could flash that and be good to go. I have no idea how to figure out which partition that would be, though. The obvious choice was the "firmware" partition, but that partition has a lot of drivers that seem to relate to lots of different important things, so messing with that seems scary. I also don't know anyone who is knowledgeable enough to generate that image (myself included), so it's a moot point.

My question is why hasn't anyone else's device gotten borked since the update? I've had it since the update was distributed with no issues and use Moto Actions continuously. Seems like if it really is a combination of writing drivers to a partition that isn't compatible it would be a universal issue. If only 2 people who have a mofo'd 5.1 IMG (out of probably hundreds) experienced issues my bet is on some weird glitch that occured when you initially flashed the updated firmware to get 5.1 working on the mofo'd device, rather than some general driver incompatibility.

I agree. Either it was a corrupt driver installation that worked just well enough for the app not to realize it, or the firmware update happens silently only when requested (similar to Google play services), and we're all one chop chop flashlight away from a phone apocalypse. Hopefully it's the former.
So, I went ahead and updated my device to official 5.1 and the problem is still there. The moto actions app that is installed still says that it is not compatible with my phone. I have cant figure out how to clear it or delete it or anything. And when I think I have it, I let the phone sleep and I can't bring it back to life again without waiting for a 15 min+ boot. Oh well, at least the bootloader says "official" now rather than "modified." So, Motorola should not complain about it. Thanks for trying to figure it out @TheSt33v

Good to know. I picked the $25 option specifically because the free one requires an inspection, but I'll probably update it anyway. I'm not surprised that it didn't solve the problem though. When we flash those upgrade/downgrade images, we're basically just doing manually what RSD lite/Verizon upgrade agent does automatically.

you called it! My plan it to, in Recovery, Factory wipe, then reboot to Bootloader and attempt to flash base. Damn. I was hoping I was wrong. Yeah, I did what you suggested many, many times. If you end up reflashing 4.4.4 and you see the message to uninstall the sensor firmware, do it and FLASH NOTHING ELSE until a solution is found. If not, it's really easy to get a new one from Motorola.

Besides setting up Moto functionality, I'm golden and I do have their updates blocked best I can anyway. Hope all is working.

Why is my Nexus 6 not receiving updates?

I've just taken my phone out of box, this is October 2015, and the moment I opened the phone first it started overheating and second I checked for updates and it says "software upto date".
The software is stuck at 5.0 and I don't know why I'm not receiving a single update when it's the time people are getting Android M. I've a Nexus 5 too and it's up to date to Marshmallow while this one is still stuck at 5.0 Lollipop.
I guess this has got to do something with the OTA feature and I want to fix this instead of flashing OS manually. So please tell me what to do now.
Till now after many Google searches I did twice reset of my phone and cleared data cache everything of Google Services Framework, but still nothing is helping.
Just 1 day old nonrooted nothing ever did, everything's from my side fine, just not understanding what to do.
Please please help me soon, I'm regretting buying nexus 6 now!

I think I've mentioned that I'm not even getting 5.1, okay not even 5.0.1
Can someone please understand the level of problem I'm facing?
I've already mentioned while others are at 6.0, I'm not going anywhere ahead of 5.0
Please help!
Where did you buy your phone from? Are you sure it is not running a custom ROM? Is the bootloader locked?
Keep the phone connected to the internet (WiFi or cellular data), and sign into your Google Account, and wait another day. It may take a day or two to get update notification.
Edit - depending on your build#, you can download the OTA files and sideload them using ADB (don't need to unlock bootloader if that is a concern), or the faster option would be to just unlock the bootloader, and flash the latest factory image.
im on my 3rd day on my nexus.. but im not losing hope.. im still waiting for the ota.. its on 5.1 lmy47d...
So here is something funny. I was waiting and waiting for 6.0 on my nexus 6 for days. Never came. I have friends that have the same phone on the same carrier and they had already received their updates. So frustration and being impatient had gotten the best of me and I decided i was going to side load the update. In order to do so you need to unlock the boot loader which will wipe all of your data, EVERYTHING. When the phone rebooted completely wiped i went through the initial set up and it wasn't 5 min later the 6.0 update came rolling in like no big deal. WTF. I don't know why it wouldn't find it on its own but i wouldn't. Needless to day that is what I did and ended up getting it in a round about way. Maybe give that a try if you get to impatient and at that point if it doesn't show up just side load it. Hope this helps
Same, stuck on 5.1 LMY47D
google gives us factory images for a reason. if you arent patient enough to wait for an ota, just flash a factory image yourself, instead of starting threads about how you arent getting an ota. whats the point of a thread about you not getting an ota?

Sideloading the OTA using "ADB sideload" doesn't require you to unlock the bootloader.
Unlocking the bootloader is needed if you choose to flash the factory image file instead of the OTA file

Your right, I'm sorry. That's what I meant to say.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
I got mine today and its on android 5 Doesn't want to update either, keeps saying its up to date. Haven't done anything yet with the phone. Looking now how ADB Sideload works.

I've bought it from an online retailer Flipkart in India.
I'm sure there's no changes made in phone and it's original and is as a new nexus 6 should be. Just this software update is causing me problems

Well I'm damn impatient, if I'd 5.1.1 and waited for 6.0 I'd have definitely had some patience, but waiting from 5.0 doesn't make sense.
Anyways to the point, after listening to your story, I tried same thing, clearing cache and reset from recovery mode, but still it didn't help
Hope there's some other resolution to this now.
I suspect it was your post that I responded to, at another forum - but you have two options really
1. Unlock bootloader (wipes data), and flash latest image
2. ADB Sideload OTAs one after the other in the right sequence (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-stock-ota-urls-t2906493 for OTA URLs) - check your current build and choose a path to get to the build you want
I am having the same problem.
I am having the same problem. Have you tried resetting the phone and starting it without the sim?

Should I downgrade my android version?

Hey, I am currently running 6.0.1 as my android version. Just asking but would it be suggested to downgrade the android version? If yes, than too which version?
Why do you want to downgrade?
The Nexus 6 came out with the 5.0, you can't go further back, even with custom roms. Actually I've head somebody trying to build KitKat for the shamu, but I don't know if he succeeded.
Also why would you like to downgrade, anyway?
Oh as far as why: I had enough with 6.0.1 freezing/slow/crashing on me. Sometimes it even freezes to the point where I cannot turn off the screen for a few minutes at times. I also have enough with the apps freezing or does not work and Chrome sometimes freezes as well.
Why not upgrading to android 7 instead of downgrading?

Why don't you try upgrading instead? Android 7.0 factory image has just been released.
Oh, has it been released? Does it causes those boot loop issues on Motorola branded phones just like it does with LG branded? And could I upgrade using the Wugs tool?

If you want to flash the factory image then go here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#shamu
You will find the factory image for 7.0 there and also the instructions on how to flash it. If you are already on stock 6.0.1, you should bee recieving an OTA update soon. But since you say you have reboots and freezes I would take a backup of what every you need onto your computer and then start of fresh from the link above. That way you won't be haunted by old bugs that might be stuck because of previous versions.

These freezing/slow/crashing issues look very unique to you. Why didn't you try a factory reset, then add your apps back one by one, and look for those that give you trouble. Also are you rooted, do you use xposed or anything that modifies the basic system? Because I'm runnin 6.0.1 myself, and never had the issues you do.
The instructions on the developer page to flash looks too confusing. Well, it jumps right into it when myself I never done it before.
Everybody on this site once knew nothing about Android. Your safest bet is to just wait for the OTA to be offered (or proactively check for it) and accept it. If you're as novice as your posts suggest, I'm guessing that you're running a pure stock device, so you won't run into any problems with the upgrade. And if you do, you know where we are...

Issue when reverting back to Apr factory image from Android 11 DP3

guys, i have issue while reverting back to factory image with Apr update in the face unlock (Face enrolment didn't work)
i had to go back to factory image with Mar update to get face unlcok working
as of now, face unlock is working either with Mar or DP3 and not working anymore with Apr factory image.
i even tried to update to Apr after flashing Mar factory image through OTA (with working face unlock), and after update to Apr, face unlock will stop working and giving the following error (Can't verify face. Hardware not available).
i am now stucked with Mar update to have face unlock working, and can not update to Apr.
any advise? thanks
I didn't have any problem going back from dp3 to April. Maybe you didn't flash the full rom?

The exact same thing has happened to me! I've reflashed the stock April q image like 3 times and face unlock is totally borked. Can't get it to work no matter what I do. Wtf did google do!?
Did you find a solution yet?

Flashing etc won't solve it, I think the fix needs to come from Google. All other software versions work so I'm assuming the May update will solve it in a weeks time.
If you contact Google they'll want you to boot into safe mode and test it that way but that also doesn't work . They'll offer a replacement handset once you've tried that.
I am on Mar for the moment to get face unlock working, waiting for may update after 10 days
I went onto google chat for support they just want me to go down the warranty claim route... lol...

Done it all mate.
I even fastboot erased every single partition and then flashed April factory image.
It's like dp3 touched some firmware **** for faceunlock IR. Strange it works on march update but not April though and i went back to dp3 and it worked.
It's a shame dp3 is an unstable mess compared to dp2.
Will just wait for may update and fingers crossed that sorts it. Otherwise it looks like Google are sending me a new phone haha.

The links don't seem to go anywhere mate.
I had the same issue from returning from DP3 to April update. I'm currently staying on DP3.
Google support also wanted me to go down the warranty route, I prefer to keep my phone of course. I am happy I am not alone in this, as this means it's more likely to be addressed by Google.

i purchased my Pixel 4 from Google store via freight forwarder to me in Kuwait, to make a return will take ages
Thinking about it I tried Android 11 when it first came out and ever since I can't update past Feb patch. Anything past Feb causes my camera to crash constantly (tries to access libraries that dont exist). I tried everything (different roms, kernels, no root etc..). If the next patch doesn't work I'm going to send it back.
I've decided just to send mine back. My speakers have been a bit strange as of late too, crackly.
It becomes a situation where you have to decide if what you get is worth what you're going to take getting it. I bailed on these things a while back, stock is so good now it isn't like I'm waiting for some killer feature to drop in preview and sample it. It's kinda strange really; I was there on day one with Android and it wasn't long before the roms took off. For quite a while I was getting a new phone every so many months and at times would install new roms daily, sometimes I would try several in an evening. Now I'm sitting here thinking the dev-preview isn't worth the hassle. Not quite sure what I'm trying to say here, I just feel like something has been lost in this game.

I relate to this on many levels mate. Within the last year I’ve had a note 9, pixel 3xl, note 10+ and now pixel 4xl. I’ve lost interest in the whole scene really. I only flashed DP3 because a friend of mine asked if I tried it and now here I am sat using an iPhone because my pixel is on its way to a repair centre in Poland. Stock life forever. Not worth the hassle
