Screen Issue... need a favor - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have always thought I have seen a bit of artifacting on this display, but I am not sure a new phone will fix it. Moto, of course, wants to send a new phone.
Would some of you please download the png at http://soletc.com/stuff/yuk.png and look at it on your Moto X. Do you see a smeared area between the icon on the far right and the one in the same row on the left? Something similar to this...

I have these. Most visible at low brightness and yellowish-white backgrounds.

I don't see them, neither at low or high bright, zoom in or zoom out.

Yes, the smeared area is visible on my Moto as well. I downloaded the png and that zone is clearly visible, for my eyes at least.

Nothing here on any settings either.

There's very little point in exchanging your phone over this. It's an odd software issue present on the 2 previous X's I've had and will probably be present on the third when it arrives sometime this week. If you look closely into the line you can probably make out the image of the android soft keys in it. When I first got the phone I thought it was odd burn in but if you rotate the phone the back button rotates too so it seems to be a software issue, possibly with the screen driver. I find the best way to see it is to open something with a white background that's not too busy like settings and dial the brightness down. If you look close enough you'll see it. Just seems Moto is using fairly iffy panels in a number of the phones. Of course this may be a different issue altogether but normally when I see weird lines across my screen that's what it is

Here's a video showing the issue in the new Photos app...

I see it, it's like a band crossing the entire display. Maybe you need to contact Motorola for a replace because my moto doesn't have this and is like 8 months old.

[Q] Galaxy Note Screen Issues!!!

Dear friends...
Im new here so Ill try to be breif.
I bought a galaxy Note and I have an issue.
Im not familiar with terms so I dont know if my problem is called banding or anything else of the kind.
In a page that has a white backround (happens with some other backgrounds too but especially with white) I notice this:
The white changes shades... for ex.: it could take a pink-ish shade or a green-ish shade or a light blue one. All this ofcourse as a shade and not eye-popping differences. Just noticable.
Does anyone have knowledge on this issue?
What I'm really sick about finding out is if others are facing this problem also or if this is just my devise because Im an extremly lucky person and I dropped it right out of the box!!! So my worry is if I did some damage to the screen, or if this is just an issue with the hd led display.
Any help would be highly appreciated because as you understand, I will feel much less stupid if this is a common problem, rather than having caused it myself.
Thanking in advance
Gus
Uh... sounds like you need to return it. It shouldn't change shades when displaying white.
^^^Copy that, you need to get that replaced.

Does the white change shades while you are looking at the phone directly or when you are moving it sideways and viewing from varying angles?
Same problem here
I have the same issue with the screen you describe! I thought I am the only one...Could it be a wide-spread problem and other don't notice it? it is a very faint hue change from pink to green with a variable frequency but on low-brightness is annoying as it distracts me from reading... I do not know if it is a problem with the device or a feature of the superamoled display; I did not see this on my Galaxy s1 nor S2.
So, my concern: is this going to stay like this, to degenerate or to cure by itself.
I may return the phone but due to the stock shortage I will have to stay without it and I am quite hooked by this device...
Also due to the fact that this is barely visible it may not be accepted for servicing.
I know exactly what you are talking about, and i have seen it in my device. Do not fear, it is not a hardware fault, and is not caused by your drop:
Go to settings / display and scroll down. You will see 'auto adjust screen power' and when this is checked it seems to cause this, although i agree it is barely noticeable.
I keep mine checked because i prefer the potential power savings
I want to thank everyone for their replies!
Thank you Gahshn and dannstarr.
You cant imagine what a releif it is to know I didnt cause this problem myself.
Dannstarr thank you VERY much for your settings suggestion.
Im under the impression that it DID reduce the frequency of the problem quite much but it didnt completely stop.
Nevertheless, it is an improvement.
The fact that Im not alone on this, is a releif by itself but,
anyone else who is facing the problem and has more suggestions on this, please reply!!!
I guess there's no point on taking it to Samsung now.
They'll just do a factory reset and I'll loose what ever free apps and progress within apps and games I've made.
directly my friend
Different light intensity
I have a similar problem. I don't so much see shades with different colors, but different light intensities, horizontally across the screen if you hold it in portrait mode (typical way of holding in one hand).
You mostly notice it when all the display is grey, but also a bit on white.
You can see it by downling the free tool "Screen test" and going to the third page (first is white, second black and third grey).
I made a picture of it.
Do you have this issue?
I wonder if it makes sense trying to replace it.
@ Hironimo
Yes my friend, I downloaded the app that u said and these lines DO appear maybe not as intense as shown on the photo but visible.
As far as my issue, its very nerve braking because it doesnt appear at once so if you wanna show someone what ur talking about its very difficult.
Its more vissible with low brightness and with apps with white backround like gmail or browsing etc. You observe the screen for a minute or less, and it appears.
I think we hit the jackpot with this screen and I think we should all contact samsung in Korea because they are enjoing almost my one month salary and I am getting dizzy by reading within their so called hd super amoled screen! If I only knew......

I have a similar issue - horizontal banding in landscape view and hue change of white between pink and green (!) - barely visible in plain light but annoying whan screenfilter is on (screenfilter is a free app to reduce the brightness for use at night); I have not seen other phone (none of my friends have this model) but on previous phones I had I did not notice this type of problem.
I do not think it is a defect - is more like a variation in quality of the pentilematrix I would not expect from a manufacturer this screen.
Sending for replacement may look bizarre because it is a minor problem and you may be told that no screen is perfect and have issues like this to some extent.
Yes, this is also my take on it.
It is no major defect, and indeed if I send it in for repair they may say there is nothing wrong. And if I send it back to amazon saying it is faulty they will replace it (once) and I may get a screen with the same issue.
I do have to say that on the photo it appears clearer as when you normally look at it, and in normal use you seldomly notice it.
But when I compare it with my "old" galaxy s2 I know what evenly lit means ...
My friend also tells me i thinks the defect is not big enough to do something about it.
In so many other respects I love the note.
Especialy that FINALLY they have volume controls on the headset.
But I'm very intersted to see how many others have this or similar issues...
Maybe if we are enough we can contact Samsung and get a statement.
What about creating a poll?
edit: sorry, other topic.

Uh, on the topic of screen issues.... here is mine: the super-duper-black is not that black.
See the pic, that is supposed to be full black. Granted, this was taken in total darkness and with a long shutter, but it can still be seen. Hell, I noticed it yesterday when I wanted to take notes on a black background, under standard room lighting conditions.
(This is a review device, so I'll return it anyway.)

Is it visible under normal viewing conditions? i.e. not when taking long exposures in total darkness. Serious question btw. I'm just unsure from your post if this is something you can see generally.

Wow, I also have this problem and really thought it was just me because nobody had mentioned it so far. It's a problem that doesn't feel big enough to send the phone back, but is a big enough problem to annoy the hell out of me.
I have so far chosen to ignore the issue, but agree with the other comments regarding the fact that tinkering with the settings does make it less apparent. And again, I agree that I love the phone so much, I don't want to send it back for repair (if that's what it needs), but the underlying problem is... does it need a repair? or is it a feature?

So far only under moderate light and a black background. Which is what I'd use for e-book reading or writing into the note app during a session.
edit: tried it with fbreader, on night mode. You won't notice it during the evening, even with minimum brightness, unless there are a couple of empty lines. Then it looks as if the screen would be dirty.

Judging from the fact that there are many of us, it seems that it is not a matter of repair.
But... Im surprised that not all users have noticed and I sure would like the opinion of a samsung technician or a professional. Just to make sure.
But I also have difficulty turning it in...
Thats why we are here
To be convinced that it is a general issue and not individual.

4x Display Question: Problem or normal behavior?

Hello guys,
I've noticed something, that to me, seems strange about the display in the 4x HD.
Usually in black backgrounds. What i see is some kind of "static", as if there were little waves moving when i focus on the black background. I can see that on some dark grey backgrounds too. Anyway, another easy way for me to see it is to open the notification bar. It's easy to see on the transparent part with a black background behind it.
Is this normal? I tried to look for those things in my old xperia arc, but i couldn't find it.
Neither did i find any topics on this.
This would be a bad thing for me, since i've just gotten a new 4x (the first one i got had those "particles' of dust in the screen). And it was really hard to make them give me a new one. Now it would be pretty much impossible.
I don't really think it's a big deal, i guess, but you know, just to be sure.
Thank You!

Its not a normal behavior, I already had that once or twice but, maybe because I don't care a lot with the phone, sometimes I seat on it... or it falls... I care but not like if it was made of glass...
Try to squeeze it gently when that happends, maybe some kind of bad contact of the display, if doesn't disappear take it to the service center (unless if you live in Poland of course...).
To the OP: that actually happened to mine once. All I did was a simple reboot and everything was back to normal. It was kinda weird.
I don't know if you experienced the same thing that i did. They don't seem to go away. They are always there. After reboot too. I'll update firmware cause i haven't done that yet. Then i'll post back.

Active Notifications Flicker?

Wanted to see if anyone elses' X does this.
Go into a dark/pitch black room.
Face down your phone and pick it up / get the AN to trigger.
Watch your screen after the AN fades out.
Does your whole screen go through a wavy/flicker effect? Lasts about 1 second. Looks slightly grey/brownish. Not so noticeable when it's bright out.
I have noticed this. I wanted to see if the active notification pixels were the only ones lighting up and I think they are. However, there is that brief moment that the whole screen is emitting enough light to be noticeable.
Ya I have noticed this too but only in very dark rooms. I'm not to worried; battery life is great for my usage.

Just a heads up. ?

Nexus 6 Notifications

One of my last hang ups on getting the Nexus 6 is how it will handle notifications. I know it will have Ambient Display, but from what I have been able to read, its not going to pulse like the Active Display of the normal Moto phones. Has anyone seen how the Nexus 6 will handle notifications yet?
This is exactly what I'm trying to find out, i keep checking all the unboxing and first hands on video and reviews
and they just keep talking about the size, specs and camera, i might have to pass on this nexus if it doesn't pulse in some form, i just can always keep picking up my phone check for a message.
Yep. If it doesn't pulse or blink or something, it will be a poor choice. Knowing you have a notification from across the room or in a dark room, is one of the things I like about 95% of Android phones.
The last phone I had without an LED light was the GS2, and I had to use other means.
It seems like such a simple request for anyone with the phone to check as well. Every unboxing and first impressions video I have watched (far too many) have all said that "it has moto x like notifications and that's a good thing" but every time they show the settings it doesn't indicate that it pulses or breathes. I was hoping that DL would have answered this question when they got their test units, but even they haven't yet.
I'm pretty sure Google knows it's silly to send a visible notification only once. I'm confident they've incorporated some form of pulse or renotification of some kind. Fingers crossed
In any case if it is or not just remember this. ITS A SOFTWARE FEATURE.
I mean come on guys, we are XDA. If its not perfect I am sure one or some of us here will be able to modify the feature to allow whatever we want. The feature is baked into 5.0 android now and is Open, all we have to do is work on a expanded settings system to customize it if it already does not have one. Hell if Xposed gets properly ported to ART we can surely see a module for it!
Stop acting like its the end of the world if it does/doesn't have the exact feature of software design as the Moto X. Its a software feature and if demand needs it I am sure we will find a way to make it happen. Have faith in XDA and the Developers.

Its definitely not the end of the world. I'm not being dramatic and condemning the phone if it doesn't have it. Just looking for an answer to what I hope Google realizes is a basic need. I've been rooting and roming since the OG Droid days here so I know what XDA can do, I just don't believe this is a feature that I should need to rely on the Devs here to create.
First of all, it's something you can turn off. So if it doesn't work the way you want it to you don't have to use it.
Google is also pushing Android Wear which makes anything like Moto Display (ie Active Display) pointless cause you can see it on your wrist faster anyway.

The battery on the G watch is really great actually.
And if you don't want Android wear, don't buy it. But that's where Google is going so some features that used to be present on phones that aren't as necessary now will potentially be removed.
Ambient display on N6 works similar to Moto X. It will pulse when the notification arrives. After that it will pulse every few minutes, in an adaptive time period - the longer you don't pick it up, the period between pulses will increase.
And of course custom rom's will be able to tweak this, I hope.

Seems very unreliable, he had to try multiple times. Also why is pick up to activate so unreliable?
I really wish they'd copied the Moto version and added the sensors.
this seems like it will just nuke the battery in comparison to an LED.... I may end up just leaving this off.
won't this turn on constantly in a pocket as well?

Display jello/wavy effect when scrolling!

Noticed this as soon as I setup the phone. I don't think I've ever seen an AMOLED panel do this. It's almost like it's refreshing each line of pixels too slowly/unevenly during a single frame?
Here's an album of images and video captured from 240 FPS video. View them one after another. The screen refreshes by starting in the bottom left corner and finishes the frame in the top right corner... the icons and text on each line of apps goes out of alignment as I scroll.
Text and elements on the screen stretches out when scrolling down, and smushes together when scrolling up. Straight lines look wavy when scrolling left or right as well!

Hopefully software since it's the same panel as the 3T. I don't think it's vsync, because if that were disabled it'd result in tearing. I really have no idea what's going on.
On the up side, an assistant head moderator on the OnePlus forums forwarded this information to the developers... other people are complaining about this same issue there as well!

Same here. It seems to be a Software issue
---------- Post added at 17:04 ---------- Previous post was at 16:38 ----------
To be Precise the upper part of the screen reacts slower. The thing that makes me nervous is that it's the same Spot when using horizontal.
Anyone can check if this issue is also when scrolling in twrp, if yes it's a Firmware issue or even Hardware.
If this was a Software issue we would see a Glitch while scrolling but it's a smooth Jello effect
I've did couple of Tests. And it seems it's the screen itself and not the Software. As recording the screen with an App will not show the issue. I hope it can be fixed with a Firmware Update.
We need an Update for the amoled screen driver.
Thank god I'm not the only one noticing that straight away. It pretty much ruined my experience since I got this phone. At first a thought its just me beeing OCD again and checking the screen for failures far too often.
It's hard to not see it when scrolling and it is very irritating!
Like a Jello / Wobble / Warping effect.
This needs to be addressed asap! If I Google this issue, it comes up a thread on OnePlus forums "The first thing I did when I got my OnePlus 5, I immediately installed the ... screen starts moving before the top half, giving a "jello" effect when ..".If I click on it, it says "OnePlus Forums - Error
The requested thread could not be found".
Seems like they removed the thread?
If the issue isn't getting worse when underclocking cpu&gpu with Ex kernel it's sure no Software issue. Then it's rather Hardware or Firmware (Panel driver)
But I simply can't imagine an amoled screen having such a Hardware issue.

I don't think so - that sounds like frame dropping, and I have noticed that too.

It's the same panel (better say a variant of the panel), but what people don't know is that it seems it's mounted inverted on the OP5. So this wobbly effect seems to manifest more because of this condition.
I noticed this when evaluating some stuff on the source code I could backport to the 3T.
Let's hope it's just a weird overlay panel calibration or something similar and not a processing issue from design choices.
Only time will tell.

Problem is that time is limited due to the 15 days return period
Oh my.... I'm not experiencing anything like this... I'm sorry guys :/
EDIT: I have this effect also, but very minor. The 15-day return starts on delivery, or on ordering date? (So if i ordered the phone on the June 21st, this return thing will expire at July 6th?)

Exactly i can't take that chance they may or may not fix this issue or are they just going to sweep it under the carpet and pretend no one noticed, One thing is for sure if i decide to keep it and they don't resolve this awful screen latency, scrolling, stuttering lag this will be my 1st and last OP phone, it shouldn't have even come to market with this issue.
The panel is mounted inverted?! WTH?! The OP5 will be the new OP2 at this rate.
oh my.... i receive mine today in possibly a few minutes.... U people are making me more and more regretting buying this thing.....

I know! It's getting worse every second I'm on this forum... I wonder if maybe this is a batch set thing or if this is a region thing. I haven't read through the whole thing. But, if my screen has a weird effect like this which I will now watch for, I'll report it here.
****s gonna hit the fan when most people will be receiving them this and next week, hope they've fixed it by then before their customer support has a meltdown.
