Galaxy S6 Active Root/Custom ROMs - Galaxy S6 Active

Hello all,
I am a recent convert to android, and picked up the GS6 Active yesterday. I know it is a new phone, but im looking to root it and install a vanilla Android rom of 5.1.1 (from the nexus?). Being that the hardware is similar, does anyone know where to start with this? Thank you in advance!

Does the S6 Active have a microSD slot? Just curious...

This device is pretty tempting as battery, waterproof and camera are all important to me. Wish it had 64gb storage though. If this does at least get root I would consider jumping carriers to get one as I'm still on a note 2 off contract for a few months waiting for something I actually want.

I picked up one of these on Sunday. The battery is amazing and everything is running really smooth. The first thing I did was throw it in water to make sure it would survive lol. Would love to root it, but the phone works well as is.

<3 I absolutely adore mine.

yeah i cant really complain it works well out of the box

Hope something comes soon.
I really hope more people get this device.
So far it has been a good experience. The battery, screen, the camera, and build seems solid and I just wish I could remove these damn ATT apps.
Samsungs UI has gotten a lot better but I still prefer stock.

Isn't it possible to disable these att apps in settings?

Maybe 6 month for root and a crazy developer with a lot of free time.... good luck

Yeah you can disable the apps in settings.

The biggest problem with the bloatware is that it takes up sooooo much room. The phone unfortunately only has 32gb of internal storage and no sd slot. Once you subtract for the space taken up by out of the box crap it's down around 24gb?? I believe it was. We have two of these phones and have had little quirky issues with both of them. Mine likes to randomly unlock and open apps and dial numbers while in my pocket. My daughter also has one and a few days ago attempted to use the underwater camera function to take some pics in our reef tank. After removing it from the water the phone went wonky and started flashing in and out of charge mode then rebooted into "Factory Mode". An hour or so later it was back to normal. We have 5 days left in our 14 day period that we have to return them so I guess I'll give it a couple more days but most likely these duds will be going back.

I'm seriously thinking of getting the s6 active for its water proofing and a firmer sturdier case. But I fear this wont be supported as much from the development community since it's rare to find an s6 active user.

The waterproof rating applies to fresh water.
Sea water is another animal altogether.
If the phone gets splashed on a fishing trip and you wash it ASAP with clean, fresh water it should be fine.
Swimming with it, especially in sea water, is a big no-no!
Even if it seems OK afterward, expect big issues to crop up over time.
I thought perhaps if out of the box it's on 5.0x one could use ping pong to at least root and even use flashfire to go custom but no? Edge and normal S6 are somewhat interchangeable but I suppose this device is on its own. Too bad, with the locked bootloader and very limited development on the S6 family as it is, it's probably going to remain in the same boat as the VZW Note 4 crowd, unfortunately.

Is this working for root on the active?

Yes, I've already explained this to her. The issues with saltwater are that it can dry out the seals and corrode metal parts such as the contacts, she then explained to me that it wasn't the fish tank she was going to take pictures in, it was the pool and she never even got a chance to take a picture, it started acting goofy as soon as it hit the water. Regardless, it shouldn't have acted the way it did and I shouldn't be having the problems I'm having with mine. At&t is now sending me a replacement for mine thinking maybe it's some sort of defect in the phone. It has called 911 4 times now while in my pocket. I have a lock pattern set, buttons set to do nothing, and it still opens apps, sends texts, and dials numbers in my pocket, not to mention it's laggy and nothing seems to run too swell on it. I have grown to hate this phone over the few weeks that I have had it. I am now using my daughters old Nexus 4 and it's like an amazing dream with rainbows and Unicorns compared to the experience I was having with the Active. I really hope the replacement is a much better experience than the one that is currently sitting in it's box in a kitchen cabinet waiting to be returned. If not, it will be for sale. My daughter seems to like hers....me, different story.... hopefully the replacement changes my mind because I really liked the phone in general, if only it would operate correctly.

Who is getting the S 5 Active?

Just saw that the S 5 Active is available for At&t today. I'm taking my S 5 back tomorrow and getting the Active. I'm in landscaping so having a rugged phone is important. Plus this one is getting really hot and draining battery to fast. It wasn't like that at first. Called At&t and they said im at my 13th day. Cut off is 14 days to return so I just made it. Will update and let you guys know.

the MIL Spec gives it a slightly higher shock resistent rating however the IP spec is identical to the S5 which means water resistant to about 1 meter and my guess is that it gained the MIL Spec rating only do to the case suround nothing more. IMHO not worth the switch from the standard S5 just buy an otter box case and you'll get as good if not better protection.
EDIT: From the AT&T Website Specs on the S5 Active
2. Water-resistant and dustproof based on IP67 rating. Submersible up to 1m (3 ft) of water for up to 30 mins with covers tightly closed. Rinse to remove residue. Meets US Mil-STD 810G for shock, temperature, humidity, rain and altitude. Device may not perform as shown in all extreme conditions.

I see. There is a extra button above the volume buttons. They also took out the finger scanner. I'm still thinking about it honestly. I just get mad every time I buy a new phone 5 days later they come out with an updated one or Active. LOL.....I like the camo green active look though. Like I said , Im still debating on it. Thanks man !!
Are you considering the 15% or $50 AT&T restocking fee if you would be subject to when returning within 14 days?

I read in an article this morning that the extra button is a "shortcut" button that opens useful outdoors-y tools like a barometer and compass and the button is configurable to open other wanted apps.

Instead of getting an active i rather get a T-mobile S5 with the unlocked bootloader. But the active looks solid...literally.
Well, hopefully any future exploits found for the AT&T version of the GS5, will also apply to the GS5 Active.
I ordered one yesterday. I wasn't sold on the S5 cause I have a note 3 and just passed up on it. The S5 active is something that can useful for me.
The mentality is when buying a retail phone I don't ever expect it to get unlocked or gain root access. If I want that then I look for developer editions. So when I get it I except it as is with TW, bloat and all without complaints lol.

I've been more than happy with them since the Cingular days.
I have decided to stay with my S 5 and not get the Active. Looks like Samsung is moving some devices to Tizen software. WTF is that? No more Android on Samsung devices in the future? WTH Samsung. Really? http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/06/02/android-is-clearly-dead-now-samsung-announces-its-first-tizen-smartphone/
In Slovakia its possible to buy it, but its not cheap or nice...
Mine will be here tomorrow. From all the videos I've seen, it looks nice. I seriously doubt Samsung will abandon Android for the North American and European markets. That would be a serious no-no.
I'd take the s5 back if I could. I've owned many Samsung products, this is by far the worst in my opinion. Using Swype, the keyboard lags so bad. The phone itself gets very laggy at time's and I have to reboot it.
Reminds me of the old BlackBerry days when you had to do a battery pull a couple time's a day.
Only upside to this phone is the camera in my opinion.

What S6 do you have?

I just wanted to throw a poll up quick to get a estimate on what versions of the S6 you guys are using! I am switching to AT&T from the big red and just bought an Active on Swappa. More or less I'm curious about how many actives are out there lol.
I have an S6 and an S6 Active. Got the Active last Saturday and am seriously impressed. Tried to get one off of Swappa but they were selling so fast. Found a sealed one on Craigslist and got n it for 550. Really happy with it so far. Battery life is superb!
Went 19 hours and 5:15 SOT this week and still had 33% left before I passed out lol!

I hope you double checked that IMEI and made Sure it's not financed. I'm going through hell trying to get my money back through eBay because I didn't know it was financed until I tried to sell on swappa. But anyway...
I have the s6 edge (returning hopefully) and just picked up the active. I absolutely love the active. Not as pretty as the edge but makes more sense with my job.
Yes, I asked that and put that on the bill of sale that it was free and clear of the Next plan. It was a 2 year upgrade. Already unlocked it. The seller did not hesitate and gave me the IMEI number ahead of time to run it with ATT, Etc.
Sent from my S6 Active!
So far the results are surprising me, I didn't expect so many people to have the Active. That deffinitely gives me hope that some developers will pick up this device. I can't wait to debloat and modify this thing! How does rooting affect the price on Swappa?
I actually have a 32gb s6 which I use on straight talk....kinda wish I bought the unlocked version since I can't get ota's I don't think. It's blocked on smart sense or something? Was hoping to leave my rooting days behind me but I guess that's my only option.

Just picked up the S6 active a few days ago. I have 2 weeks to return it if not satisfied. 19 hours with 4 hours screen on and still at 40%! Beautiful screen, phenomenal camera, responsive and smooth. Even the ruggedness looks and feels good after using it for a few days Ummm...it's not going back!
I had a Verizon S6 for a month and a half or so.
I just switched to AT&T because of signal issues at my house with Verizon. I picked up the Active and OMG. What an exponentially better device from a usability standpoint. Sure, it's not as pretty as the S6, but then again the S6 is so fragile I had to put it in a case, so it was covered up any way. I actually kinda like the rugged look of the active.
With the S6 I was constantly worrying about the battery. Disabling this, removing that, installing a custom ROM, etc. I'm running the Active with just a few annoying AT&T apps disabled and Nova Launcher. I've been unplugged 6 hours and am at 86%. With 36 hours estimated remaining.
Not having to constantly worry about running out of juice is worth the switch for me.
Got the Active yesterday and so far I couldn't be happier! I went to the store still doubting between the S6 and the Active, on paper I liked the Active features but on the pictures and videos I had seen it seemed really ugly. Once in the store, however, I realized it actually looked much better in real life than I anticipated. At that moment my doubts went away instantly
I ended up with the blue camo one, again, it seemed pretty ugly on pictures/videos, but it's actually much softer than I thought, I think it looks great! The front and side of its case are black anyways so they're really not that different (not as much as I thought they would be).
BTW, about the waterproof feature, I haven't tested it yet (I'm kinda scared lol), does anyone have any advice on how to deal with that. Like if you put it under water, is it better to just let it dry on its own or to actively try to dry it (i.e. blow dryer)? Also, I read somewhere that it isn't recommended to take it into sea water, is that true?

I took some underwater pics with mine this past weekend. Definitely no sea water.
I just blew into the charging port (like you use to have to do with Nintendo games. Most people on here are probably too young for that... LOL.)
Then just let it dry normally. I read somewhere it's recommended not to plug it in for an hour or two after getting it wet.

Thanks for the advice!! Yep I was around for Nintendo cartridges, when games used to work out of the box... good times LOL
Got the regular S6. I really wished Samsung kept the IP certification from the S5. If Sony can do it in their Xperia line, Samsung could have surely done that with the S6. Would have totally been awesome if you could take pics underwater with a phone. Though, to be honest, I feel like all phones should have some kind of IP certification, since so many people have dealt with it.
My S3 got waterlogged and miraculously, it survived and still works fine. Ended up selling it to one of my friends (who was aware I had dropped it in water and the charging port was slightly finicky, though I feel it was like that before it happened, but they still wanted to buy it off me) when I upgraded to the S6.
But, that's definitely not always the case and sometimes your phone completely craps out. It's literally luck of the draw for sure. I honestly don't like look of the S6 Active, but I do wish the regular S6 had a larger battery. Sure, I personally can get through the day on a single charge, I won't say no to a larger battery, if had the option to.
I wonder if there'll ever be a day where you can have the best of both worlds -- huge battery in a tiny package. Guess we'll see what the future holds indeed.
Got the regular s6 since Edge didn't have temper glass screen protectors

Galaxy S6 AT&T 64GB Dies instantly, Deepsleep or hardware problem?

Hay guys,
Edited: on 07/07/2016: Problems First; My AT&T Galaxy S6, reboots randomly, dies instantly and some times freezes, doesn't matter what app i am on. The full story is here if interested, please read below;
I bought a used AT&T Galaxy S 6, 64 GB Black sapphire, Now running 6.0.1 (i sideloaded it) and it has a problem which you guys call it deep sleep problem (I call it, dying phone with no reason) when i bought it, it was running 5.1.1 then (probably BOJ7), and the second day i noticed that it was dead, (i remember i was taking some selfies, pictures, i locked it and after more or less 15 or 20 minutes i wanted to take some more pics, i saw it was not waking up). And to my surprise, I have checked it, when i call the number which is in that phone, the call goes and i can listen on my other phone that the bill is ringing but actually my device doesn't ring at all (while dead) (I have also seen once that the notification LED was blinking Blue, yet the phone was off, itself)
So, story short when i saw the device was unexpectedly off i tried to switch it on by the following methods;
i pressed all the button many times but it didn't respond until, i pressed and kept holding recovery boot combination i.e. volume down + volume up + Power buttons and it booted.
Later on it was good, after two days, it did it again.
Now my concern was rising about Galaxy S6's sudden deaths, (I still don't know whether i should call it a deep sleep and awake problem or it is something related to hardware) so, i thought lets find a way and upgrade it to MM. I searched the xda and found this
Updating to Android 6.0.1 G920AUCU3CPD6 Step by Step {http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s6/general/updating-to-android-6-0-1-g920aucu3cpd6-t3371884}
I upgraded my phone and thought it's fine now, but to my surprise, the phone went off while it was in my pocket with almost 70% battery charged. I was shocked, yet started it with the buttons combo, and yesterday when i left it charging while the battery was about 87% charged, I thought let it go to 100% but when i picked it up after 15 minutes and pushed the home button to see the status the phone was dead again with a RED LED light on while the screen was off, when i pressed the home OR power button the screen showed a big green battery with 100 % Charge (which was indicating as i powered it off and kept charging)
Now my question is that " What the hell is going on?"
If it was a rooting problem? Then, I did an odin flash of BOJ7 with all four files AP, CP, CSC and his child. which should have removed the rooting, and to confirm it whether my device is rooted or the KNOX tripped or not, i have checked the knox it is 00000 which means the KNOX is not tripped.
Please help me guys, this was my dream phone, i can't buy a new one with warranty, and i can't loose it or live it with this problem, my days suck.
please help me,
And today I've seen a new thing may be it's the real problem but I really got it today. I was surfing the net and twitter my AT&T Galaxy S6 suddenly went off and I had to force start it.
Hay guys, i need your help, am i missing you all?
Hay guys, Talvigi back,
As far as no body is interested in my post and may be no one has faced such problem before, so, i am back with some updated information;
Day before Last night, I was very much worried about my phone's behaviour, even i was thinking to show it's way out. But when i was a bit asleep yet awaken i thought way not try to factory reset the device from recovery, formate system devlock and cache partitions?
And i did it while i was half asleep and let the device update it's builtin softwares and WOLLA, it's second day my beloved AT&T specific Galaxy S6 hadn't misbehaved yet, (till now, may be it will make me lying just now)
Edit: (Third Day):
Third Day guys its third day and still my phone has not misbehaved after the above mentioned factory reset, and i hope this will continue to work like that.
Edit: Fifth day:
Sorry Sammy boy but you are a sucking OEM, after two good days my AT&T Galaxy S6 is again misbehaving with me, it again deep slept, just after seconds when i was surfing the facebook and i got lock my device for some seconds. As soon as i wanted to unlock it again i saw that the device was once again not waking up hence i had to push both volume and power buttons to start it.
And it did the same thing while it was kept on my table for a couple of hours.
It's now making me crazy to sell it again and go for a galaxy S5, it least i haven't seen this problem, i actually haven't listened this kinda problem in them from any where.
Edit; Now after a lot of days of sudden deaths and instant restarts, it has started to freeze now, I have not seen this before. I mean when I am using facebook it freezes but doesn't restart as far as I have seen it twice with freeze problem. Now I can say that it is indeed a software problem may be we can suggest it to be a kernel related problem.
So is it because I might have used a 32 GB specific ROM on a 64 GB device?
Is there a real difference between 64 GB and 32 GB ROM.
Hell with the AT&T Galaxy S6.

Hello, I was tagged in your threads and received the notification while I was sleeping. First of all my Galaxy S6 was bought by me on May 6 2015 at an Official AT&T Store, the same Store were, nine years ago, I open a contract account for mobile service. Before Android phones I was a Blackberry user. Never root a phone, never side loaded a Google Platform Upgrade, never bought a used phone. The only time I bought a phone outside an Official AT&T Store was when I bought a brand NEW Google Nexus 5 at Amazon and God knows that my former Nexus 5 was the best phone I ever owned. I always owned the top of the line Blackberry, the Bold series. And all my formers Android phones bought at AT&T were Flagships phones at the moment I bought them. OK now, I read all your threads and when you applied a Factory Data Reset you do, in my humble opinion, the right thing . Unfortunately the problem at your phone is beyond a Factory Data Reset. My advise is that you must go to an AT&T Official Store and ask for a new Nano Sim Card. If that's not work go to an Official Samsung Repair Store or Center. If that's not work, then my friend, take out the Nano Sim Card of your Galaxy S6 and bought a NEW Google Nexus 6p directly from Google or Amazon and push the Nano Sim Card in. You are going to have peace on earth running a Google Nexus phone at AT&T. Remember my fried, NEVER AGAIN buy an used phone and by the way don't side loaded Google Platform Upgrade. Just wait for the OTA regarding Platform Upgrade. I'm really sorry for the bad experience with your Galaxy S6.

Thank You sir for such a detailed reply, my bad luck with S6 is that I love it so much but when it comes to your life you will better lose your eyes. I think I will somehow sell it back and will not buy any second hand phone again.

My friend please don't lose your eye and work hard so you can buy a brand new Samsung Flagship, Galaxy S7 or a Note 6. Don't forget, far beyond the Manufacturers Flagships, far beyond your worst nightmare is the Google Nexus Phone .

Well thanks for the suggestion but do you know, I will have to work 8 hours a day for five month and save 50% of that earnings, if I want to buy a brand new Galaxy S7, and for you my dear, that would be not more then 15 days half earning or 8 days full. So, to buy a flagship, in my dreams! Yet I will try to manage on a Huawei X5 or oppo F1

My dear friend at 16 years old I left my parents house and work hard and studied hard. Now I'm 60 years old and still work hard. That's the way life goes, don't fight it. You are a good person , work hard and enjoy your life and all the Android phones you are going to have.

Somebody, help me, please. My system is really unsustainable and doesn't tell me when to stop working and when to restart.
Sent from my LG-V410 using Tapatalk
Well, guys i somehow have been able to maintain my device to keep away from all those misbehavings which it had to do all the time. But i don't want to exaggeratedly lie that they are gone now, they are here, and they also sometimes show there faces but rarely, very rarely indeed. It all could happen after a couple of factory resets and keeping the device away from auto updates mostly from googleplaystore.
Well I have ODIN back and now i'm back on 5.1.1 BOJ7. And surprisingly the reboots are still here, I think, will have to kill my wish of being on Galaxy S6 for some more months and I will have to go back to the market and buy a LG G4 or Galaxy S5 may be?
People say their experience with Marshmallow has not been good but i would mine was the worst with S 6.
I think this device has a factory fault, but as far as i have bought it in used condition and the device is an AT&T device, that too out of the US, so samsung would surely won't help me, neither i have any warranty here.
I hat you Samsung/AT&T for making such a piece of crap.
Any body in this world has the same kind of problem with the Galaxy S6 AT&T 64 GB, or I am alone?

So is note 7 Rom developing coming to am end?

Just wanted to see if devs are still going to be developing for this device with all the issues that are STILL happening apparently. It's such a shame because I absolutely love this phone. TEKs and OVERDRIVE roms looked real promising. I would just to keep a phone for 2 years if of developing is going to die off.
well considering a 2nd recall by samsung will most likely happen within the next few days according to t-mo. i would say the development for the n7 is done period. i got a feeling the n7 won't be back on the market after this either. samsung will probably scrap em all and move on to the s8 or even the note8 which will most likely need to be renamed as this whole thing has literally damaged the notes name.

A true bummer, I really don't want another phone but I guess I don't have a choice. Back to a note 4 I guess until a note 8 gets released which might not even happen. I've been a note holder since the note 2 (except a note5 which I wasnt impressed with)

The Note4 is my daily driver again, took back my replacement Note 7 yesterday.
It's basically got all the functionality where it really matters, the S-Pen.
The other features that were heavily marketed were of no consequence to me.
I definitely notice the difference between the two as for overall performance, but, it's not an awful experience by any stretch.
Throw your ROM of choice on the Note4 & ya got yourself a very comparable experience.

My phone before this was actually a note 4 and the only reason I went to a note 7 was because my phone was stolen. I was running abstrak rom (now discontinued). I'm probably going to see what mm roms they have for it now. Since I have to purchase another note 4, it will probably be on mm and I dont even know if it's rootable. My old note 3 and 4 were excellent phones, it just pisses me off that Samsung stops updates for older phones basically forcing you to upgrade phones. That being said, I'm sure the note 4 will never get a future update.
And, lights out.......

You guys believe a Note 7 V3 will ship with rootable firmware?
I seriously doubt it, we caught a lucky break on this one & some on V2 were left out in the cold w/a phone dead for development.
It's a nice phone without root, Package Disabler apps help a lot, along with a decent Ad Blocker, but, not enough for Round 3 on the exact same phone.
I'll check in on the next iteration, the Note 8,or whatever they'll call it.....

I've got a T-Mobile Note4, a perfectly decent daily driver.
However, I'm a recovering phone ho', the LG V20 is next on my list (returned my Note7 V2 for a refund two days ago)

I wish T-mobile will get the new Google phone. I will definitely get the pixel.

When Samsung has a major fiasco they recall all the product gather all the staff in the court house and destroy the product in front of them and the manager of that department is then banned from the company for life. Korean custom. Not only did the guy lose his job he disgraced his Family for generation to come. Going back to Note 7 the product is being discontinued it was announced in German newspapers today
GREAT!! *sarcasm*
My Note 5 was messing up and I got the 7 for the upgrade.
I'll have to debate this, as mine was one of the ones that wasn't a replacement or recalled. But with no rooting ability, or way to drop back a version to gain root...might have to go back to the Note 5.
I never even attempted to try the software update. I didn't like the stupid green battery icons or grouped notifications. I still have my v2 on original release firmware with updates blocked. I like the phone uprooted but I do not like the current software for it. It's a shame because I love phone otherwise, but without future root to make those small tweaks on the v3, I think I'll wait until I find something I really like. I've always been a Samsung guy that being said I'm not a real Fan of pure Google type phones. For some reason I really like touchwiz (ya I know).

My Nexus 6 finally Died, and I want to cry.

So, I have had my Nexus 6 it came out... I have always boasted about how ungodly huge it was for a phone, and how amazing it was for literally everything.
I installed ROM after ROM after ROM after ROM and on and on and on...
I showed everyone I met how having stereo speakers facing front with a huge screen put any new flagship to shame.
I loved making the comment that this was the only phone i knew that the speakers could actually get waaaaay TOO LOUD.
This was even the only phone I didnt run at full audio.
If someone was showing a youtube video, or even looking at images I'd scoff while pushing away their phone and whip my Nexus 6 out for viewing or research pleasure.
I found satisfaction and relaxation in rubbing the dimple in the back.
This phone was even the original fidget spinner. I constantly found myself spinning it on a table while talking, listening, concentrating. I'd make designs on the screen with the smudges of my finger.
And now, its dead. One flawed "waterproof phone bag" and its dead. I feel like I am in mourning. Nothing new is any good. They're sleeker, faster, all fancy - but they aren't the Nexus 6.
Maybe the Pixel 2 will be the new puppy I get - or maybe i just get another Nexus 6. It's sooooo ironic that after 2 years, there is NOTHING as satisfying as this phone.
What do you think i should do?
R.I.P n6 T_T . I hope nothing bad happens to my nexus.
@ph0tiC: Buy another one on Swappa.
how long was it wet? fresh or salt water? perhaps the battery shorted? mine took a dunk in the lake with no ill effects. I have a 32g phone that i purchased with a bad battery and robbed the screen when mine broke. . Maybe a motherboard swap could work? Willing to donate. Perhaps a new battery? could do a good cleaning while apart too. Who knows....

I agree, I have been able to save a few phones from drowning by taking it all apart and giving it a thorough cleaning with 90 percent alcohol
Call motorolla. Mine was dead also. Wont even turn on or anything. Called then for a replacement and they cahrged me for $175 before tax mine was 64gb maybe 32 is cheaper. They sent me like almost new conditon. Im happy that my n6 is alive again.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
I due an upgrade and have looked at ever phone on the market but none compare to the n6, so I feel your pain
gonna flash this baby to give it a new lease of life, just need to decide what to go with.
Some leftover new-in-box 32gb blue stock just went up for sale on dailysteals for $220. Can't post outside links yet but it's a quick Google away.
My n6 is still going strong but I picked one up as a backup anyway. As far as I'm concerned, this phone is the Android high-water mark. It has all been downhill from here.
