Urbane heart rate sensor against watch r ? - LG Watch Urbane

Hi,
I would like to know how is the heart rate sensor ? Has it been improved since LG G Watch R ?
The reason I am asking is because I was an happy owner of the LG G Watch R (before the bluetooth chip die), but the heart rate sensor has always been extremely inaccurate.
Let's say I go to the gym, I could be running for 20 minutes at high intensity, and the watch would tell me I have a 55 heart rate which is not possible.
Thanks you

It's still totally inaccurate on my watch.
Others have echoed the same.

No, same question was asked older models, you know the watch measures your heart rate with that LED?
Imagine how fast it kill the battery if the heart rate sensor was always on?
What I would like is an app, you set the app to automatically measure your heart rate at intervals you can set.
Maybe once an hour when you are not active? or every 5 minutes during a workout?
You decide on the interval.
I would pay good money for such an app.

Uhhhh it barely drains the battery at all. It's something like 2% in 30 minutes. The gear fit, neo, and gear 2 all have continuous heart rate monitoring...

[Q] Heart Rate Monitor False Reading?

Hi All,
Recently I just bought the watch.
After a while, I realised that the heart rate monitor still produce readings even though I did not wear it.
Is this normal? Or my heart rate sensor has broke?
My heart rate monitor only "read" my heartrate when I'll press on show heartrate.
No automatic reading.

Actually, I don't mean automatic reading.
Just don't wear your smartwatch and run the heart rate monitor.
Let see if the sensor gives you random heart rate reading or not.
I have tried to do the same with moto360, the watch gives error "tighten the band and try again" instead.

Oh yes, you're right...
It will show a heart rate of 60
And 60 seems to be the lowest value... Never got a heart rate shown below 60.
Gesendet von meinem HTC One mit Tapatalk
I got 50 a few times when the watch was loose.
I have the same problem with the heart rate sensor. It don't work correctly and show a random number (60, 56, 110, 60, 60, many result with 60 ...). I did 2 tests many times : on my hand and without my hand => random result.
I decided to test it with a belt heart rate ANT+ and have a real different. The G watch R heart rate in realtime capture have a big problem. It's not possible to use it when running. Sometime (1 time per 5 ?) it show the good value ...
Another big problem is that isnot possible to show more than 140 heartrates when running ... is it the contact problem ???
I think this is a problem general with the sensor of this watch.
Do you have notice that ?

Well, I have seen more than 140. But during exercise (especially running-cardio).
the readings are pretty much inaccurate.
As some poster had mention in your thread, unfortunately the watch heart rate sensor are not for sports that involve to much movement.

Note that I tested with application : Sport Gear Tracker, Endomondo, Cardiograph, SensorBox for Wear
No problem for me, works almost same measure in same condition, between 70 and 79 every time in normal way.
You do not move and stay immovable during the measure.
First I'll say, I've never had issues getting readings above 140 when expected.
The watch heart rate monitor works best when you're not moving and it's never going to be as accurate as a chest belt monitor. The watch monitor offers convenience and a general ballpark reading for your workout. Try it for an entire workout. The values will fluctuate, but the overall average may be somewhere in the ballpark of what you might expect. It really all depends how you're holding your arm and the motions you're doing. I've found mine works best for walking actives, but not as well when I'm weight training.

OK, when I don't move, it's okay for cheking heart rate. Sometime it show 60, I think this is a default value when the sensor don't capture well.
But my need is the "real time" heart rate tracking for running. And it's not working well.
I found this and I understood why it cannot show more than 140bpm during "real time tracking"

Well, it's not very accurate for me either

That explains it best. Like I was saying, the watch is not going to beat chest monitors and will only give you a ballpark average at best. The watch monitors were not "made" for monitoring during activity.
A good way to cross check heart rate is to use Runtastic's Heart Rate Monitor app. I've found it does a very good job, but it is only snapshot. But a chest monitor is always best.
I've found the watch gives me a sufficient enough overall picture. Although I've found that the "R" gives me lower readings during activity than the Samsung Gear Live does. The Gear Live was giving me values that were too high during activity and the "R" gives me values that are too low during activity. But the ballpark changes give a well enough picture. I can see 55 minutes on the treadmill is working my heart more than 30 minutes of weight training.
I would have thought that watches would have the heart rate sensor on the bottom part of the strap. So they could read pulse from the bottom of your wrist. But I guess that would cost more .
I'm Denzel Washington brown and it works well enough for me.

I don' agree with you. Human heart rate is between 60 and 80 at relax (for a professional sportif => less than 60). I have normally 68 when relaxing (test with a real professional machin).
With my GTW, it show many time 60 ... and why not 59 or 61 ???

Or just try it with the watch not on your wrist. Even with no pulse to read at all, it will show a value. I just got the Android 5+ updates. And just tried. It showed a pulse of "52". So maybe that's the new minimum. And that was testing while holding the watch in the air. I tried it with the watch laying flat on a table and it read "70" [emoji15] .
This is certainly not a tool to use when checking for signs of life [emoji1] .

So 60 is in the 60-70 interval no ?
Just an FYI. I got a new watch band for my "R" and it holds the watch to my wrist a bit more snug than the stock band. Now, my heart rate readings during workouts are better than with the old stock band. So, this may be something some of you may want to try, in order to improve readings.

The Sensor
I've actually been developing for the LG Watch R using its sensors (about 14 sensors or so are reported by the API). One problem is that accessing the heart rate sensor can't be done correctly as the Google API documentation suggests it should (ditto for the Step Detector sensor). Furthermore, the sensor events for the HR sensor will return not one float (as in, readings in bpm as expected) but a list of sixteen numbers!! (your guess here is as good as mine). I'd expect this from a shoddy brand, but LG? Come on!
However, what was most astonishing, is that the sensor is reported by the API as a "PIXART_PPG" . A PPG ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoplethysmogram ) is actually a very accurate sensor by definition, way better than the usual LED + Camera combo. Still, most of the events fired by the sensor return 0.0 (actually, a list of 16 zeroes. Sometimes the third number is set to something believable).
I'm actually pondering about contacting LG and asking them about a couple of things : a) Why didn't they update the way you access their sensors when the lollipop update was released and b) Why is their PPG so unreliable?!
What are your thoughts on this?
Response from LG?
Did you every get a response from LG?
Optical wrist sensors aren't inherently unreliable if it's a good sensor and the design seals out external light. Mio makes reliable wrist strap sensors, off the actual physical sensor in the g watch r is good, it should work better than it does.

Running/Fitness App with Heartbeat support: Endomondo

After some hours of googling i finally found a good running app which support the Sensors of our Watch .
-I didnt test it really because it is already dark out there . But tomorrow or on the weekend I will test it.
It seems to be better than Runtastic,
but you need to pay monthly to get all features.
Runtastic allows you to get most features for a one time fee (5$/€)
It looks like Endomondo can record it for free (Be sure to activate it under smartwatch settings) for a detail view of you heart you need to buy premium though.
I did not find any other App that support measuring your heartbeat while making sports.
Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endomondo.android
I hope this thread helped you
I use run.gps full also measures heartbeat with sensor of my G Watch R (after selecting in setup)
Can read all necessary info on your watch during workout.
Best regards,

last i checked, Endomondo does not support the lg g watch r at all for recording heart rate or anything. only thing i could get it to do is start/stop the run.

I thought the same thing too. I use Mapmyrun which just added Android Wear support. Seems to work great with my LG R watch. No heartrate support while running though. I just take at a few times during my run. easy enough..
If you have an LG phone (i.e. G3) the built it app (I think it's LG Fit rather than the LG Health app in the store) does this really well...but like I said, only on LG phones.
I used Strava before, but after seeing this, I started using Endomondo.
yes, it fully supports Android Wear, including the G watch R.
comparing it to Strava, the Endomondo wear UI is much nicer and it has that nice heartbeat tracking. However, the web UI is god awful!! Truly truly terrible!!!
Hope they will update it soon.

Endomondo works great with the "R" and has full heartbeat support when used during workouts. You just need to make sure you enable it in settings. It is not enabled by default. I used it daily and have for months. We have old threads here talking about Endomondo.
Endomondo and the LG G WATCH R
The watch has its own PGG based heart rate sensor (which doesn't work continuosly) and I want to purchase an external heart rate monitor like a Polar Bluetooth, which monitor will Endomondo use? Will Endomondo use the watch's monitor or the external (Polar)? Is there a way to override the watch's monitor because I prefer the external (Polar) and have a continuos heart reading? Would the watch display the external monitor's heart rate?
Thanks a Lot!!

I use the free version of Endomondo for cycling and it recognises and logs my heart rate all the time. It can be a bit laggy at times but works perfectly.

Well, I am not sure about Android gear, but FITSO is the best fitness app i have ever seen.
I have basically tried every fitness app out there, and they are all feeding wrong data (distance) as I am quite sure when I run for 900 mtrs, Strava, Google fit and all the rest shows 1 km whereas only FITSO shows 900 mtr. I know it was 900 mtr as its a measured distance and written on milestone. Similar case has been there multiple times.
Also, most of awesome features are locked behind premium version of all other apps except fitso which offers all the training plans and workout plans free with virtual voice coach.
In short, you guys should try FITSO app.
What about RunnerUp?
Hearbeat works great with endomondo and gwatch r.
I recommend a very flexible silicone watchband for sports because its more accurate when tightly attached to your arm. Silicone band makes it still comfortable and easy to clean.
BTW: If you setup endomondo you have to wait for the watch to download the app and start/update once before you can toggle the heartrate sensor function

Runtastic and heart rate monitoring

Does Runtastic use the built-in heart rate monitor of an Android Wear devices? If yes, does it do it constantly or only on-demand?
no, you can only track heart rate with google fit or the built in LG app... if you sync runtastic with google fit then you can have both heart rate and other stats in one place as android wear is not listed as compatible heart rate monitoring equipment in runtastic. hope it helps.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pnn.android.sport_gear_tracker SGT tracks heart rate and syncs with Fit, though Fit syncing seems buggy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endomondo.android Endomondo tracks heart rate. It syncs some details with Fit, but heart rate doesn't get synced
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jwork.wearable.heartratesync2 Heart Rate OS tracks heart rate periodically and syncs with Fit. It does not track anything else and it can't track heart rate continuously during a work out
There are no great fitness trackers that I can find for Wear
heart rate os2, seems to be working well, better than fit.

Anyone made progress on Urbane/Android Wear and heart rate? I have used RunKeeper app for a while, so that was my preferred site for syncing data to. I have a Polar H7 that RK works with and sync's charts up to their site.
I got a FitBit Flex wristband (no heart rate) about a year ago and have stuck with it and their app/site is pretty good too.
Google Fit site still hasn't caught up to RunKeeper or FitBit IMO.
And now with the Urbane, the heart rate seems a waste. Just the one LG app seems to have access to heart rate and the data doesn't sync anywhere. Urbane is too big to wear exercising but could be useful to get my resting heart rate sync'd to RunKeeper or FitBit every week to see if it is improving as I exercise more and lose weight.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for,, but ghostracer can use the built in HR sensor or sync a bluetooth chest strap to track HR. I have an LG Urbane 2nd Edition and the built in sensor isn't very accurate but I've use the chest strap successfully. Ghostracer will also directly sync runs to strava, runkeeper or smashrun. I use SyncMyTracks to sync to other platforms like endomondo, Nike, runtastic etc.

Endomondo has full support for Android Wear heart rate monitor. It reads current and average result from watch's sensor. Also it shows proper Pulse zones in summary.
I'm using it while riding a bike. (Watch Urbane W150)
Note. You need to have watch's screen in always on mode to prevent application from going to sleep. I've noticed that once watch screen goes off app turns off sensor and reports only initial reading. (it's good idea to turn gestures off as well to prevent accidental exiting of an endomondo app).
I've written to Runtastic support asking if there are any plans for adding Android Wear heart rate monitor support. They are not going to add this feature in near future. Too bad. Cash goes to Endomondo
After testing a lot of apps, I think I finally found the best alternative (for me). Sportstracker can track heart rate in real time during workout, from my LG Urbane, and also from my Polar H7. The pro version only requires a one-time payment, so in the long run it turns out being much cheaper than Endomondo.
Lite version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sportstracklive.android.ui.activity.lite&hl=pt_BR
Pro version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sportstracklive.android.ui.activity.pro&hl=pt_BR
I also used Sync My Tracks, so I could import all my previous workout sessions from Runtastic.
You could try as well this Wear OS app: 'Heart for Bluetooth' (can be found on google play store)
It takes the HR data from the watch and sends it to Runtastic on your phone instantly via Bluetooth so no need to sync via other accounts like google fit..
