[Q] Attachable camera lenses for LG G4 ? - G4 Accessories

I know that LG G4 camera is one of the best smartphone camera on the market, but if I can further improve camera with this little peace of hardware it will be more than welcome..does anyone has experience with it...

Yap. I bought a pair of cheap lenses for my G4 from local shop. It's also available in Amazon. They are interesting, if not awesome. Actually it depends on what's your purpose of using those lens.

I bought this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HLYEES2
And have only used it with a Nexus 5 to mediocre results - will try it on the G4 tonight.

I was think of getting one as well but seems like this phone lens area is not magnetized. My nexus 5 has magnet around the lens so that lens just sticks to the phone but not. On G4. I know that because nexus 5 always sticks paper clips on my lens but G4 doesn't.
I guess clip on will do..

By adding another element to the camera you are actually decreasing the quality of photos. Only improvement you will get is varying the focal lengths, if that is what you are after then attachable lens is your solution.

I've seen some with a stick on metal ring and magnetic lenses which may work better. But then as others have said, I'm skeptical of the optics quality. If anyone has seen anything like this with decent optics let us know :good:

I purposely didn't buy an expensive one knowing that the optics simply aren't great, but it's a great little toy for $10....
Focus is the real challenge...both phones I've used with the lens have struggled with auto-focus and OIS - the lens just tricks the internals. However, the manual mode of the G4 made it much easier to use, but it's still hard to tell on the screen. These are little low light as I was racing sunset after work. As with most photos, they're much better (as is focus) in better light conditions. I also didn't crop these to provide the full effect - you'll likely have to crop photos with this superwide fisheye. I struggle to keep my fingers out of the shot some times.

Element seriously need to make a case like this for the G4. Especially since the big seller for the G4 is it's photo capabilities! They could PROFIT. I'd be first in line.
I had a ZTYLUS one for my S4 that I wish was available for my new G4 as well too. Siiiiiiiigggghhhh. The first world problem of owning a new phone.

Be careful with magnetic camera lenses! N5 is NOT designed for them

Hi all, I just want to share my experiences I made today.
I have bought a Wide/Macro Lens like used in the Video (from Amazon, they all seems to be pretty the same) and it is NOT working! The magnets from the lens are not attracting to the magnets in the phone, they are pushing away! Be aware, I don't thing there is a standardized way how the lens manufacturers build in the magnet since it is designed to hold to a metal ring and not to another magnet.
I tried to hold the lens just to take a test picture but the magnet interferes with the OIS, in some positions it caused hard vibrations within the N5's camera lens that was also visible in the camera app preview picture.
I would be careful with this lenses! I think the magnets in the N5 are designed for the OIS and not for some cheap 3rd party lenses. Gladly my OIS still seems to work flawless (This seems also to be why Google is not advertising such feature)

It's already known that some cheap ones on Amazon have more-or-less random magnetic polarity. The only ones confirmed for being consistent are the ones on Photojojo. As for messing with OIS, I don't have first-hand experience with these lenses, but it seems that that was also confirmed for not happening with the Photojojo lenses.
Unless you got the Photojojo ones through Amazon. Then you might want to post this in those other threads about this too, so people will see this result.
You could always take out the magnet and flip it around

I tried to (with a little flat screwdriver), but it seems to be pressed in, it fits very tight. Maybe I try it tomorrow again (heat up a little??).
attached a picture of the lens
(at the amazon picture a silver one was shown but they delivered this black version)
All of this effort to turn a phone into a camera... Why not just buy an SLR and enjoy real photography? Hell, even a cheap point and shoot blows away any phone camera.

uhm.. this is totally wrong, I don't want a great picture quality, I want a wide-lens to have a wider angle for party snapshots or being out with some friends. You can increase the visibility range alot and I like the effect, so why not? I definitely DONT want to carry a camera all the time (by the way I have also a canon eos d1000, yeah I know it is just a "cheap" DSLR but it is enough for me).
This is not a "camera has too bad quality" thread (IMO the N5 camera is great) so go away
By the way, the lens is working perfect with the metal ring on my GNex
I can also confirm this. I bought these from Amazon. Received these today and when tried to put them on ... the reverse polarity on the magnet on the lens and the one on the camera itself repel each other. I was only able to hold the lens in place with my hand to try out the macro lens (picture attached). However I didn't experience any vibration or OIS not working. OIS was working fine for me. I used HDR+ mode.
Anyways, lenses are going back. Only lens confirmed to work with N5 are from Photojojo and since those lenses are way overpriced I will not buy them.
zoomed out photo was taken at the closest distance where the on-screen camera focus ring turned green. YMMV.
Excuse the fingers in the macro shot as I was holding the lens with one hand while taking the photo.
enjoy
Here's my post from another thread about this:
Got the photojojo and ehh not impresive at all. Although this one didn't seem to affect the camera like the others. When put up to the camera it didn't flicker like the cheap Amazon ones. Also it required me to have the metal ring attached
You're better off going with a product called Easy Macro. It's a macro lens attached to a band that fits around your phone so no magnets
Overall for $25 it's not worth it IMO. I'm returnng it and sticking with my easy macro.
Here are some images
Here are the full resolution ones taken with my n5 and the fisheye lens. It was an act of god to get it to focus right lol

I ordered the Photojojo's from Amazon -- FROM Photojojo, and it's no-go jojo for my photo phono circo.
Anyway, the magnet doesn't work at all. Not quite reversed polarity that I can tell, but only one small area wants to attract. Not enough to keep the lens on.
Yea. The magnet on my phone barely holds up a paperclip. I seriously doubt it was designed for lenses. If it was, Google would be all over that with their advertising, especially since they have been flaunting their photo capabilities.

The fisheye lenses that I got were REALLY subpar to me, so I returned it. Since I had to attach a metal ring to the camera lens so that the lens could stick to it, I couldn't really justify it. Like I said in my earlier post I really like the easy macro because it's on a band and I can easily remove it. If I found a fisheye that was on a band like that I might get it, but idk the image quality wasnt that great either and the metal ring was really a turnoff Use amazon, buy it and if you dont like it then return it

Oh boy!!! I can now confirm this. After a long time I couldn't control myself and bought another set of lenses from Amazon and decided to stick the provided ring to the phone lens. Macro lens seemed to work fine however as soon as I mounted the wide angle lens ... OIS started freaking out so bad I can't even begin to describe. You can feel the vibrations and see it on the screen as well. I immediately removed the lens and put it away. OP was right about this little thing ... I won't be using wide angle lens to avoid any permanent damage to OIS in the phone .
Any kind of strong magnet will also disorient the directional sensor while using google maps. I was wondering why the turn by turn navi would randomly tell me to make a U-turn.
Test for yourself. Pop open google maps and locate your position. Then put a magnet near the top half of the phone, you'll see your directional pointer spin away.

So much NO in this post. "real Photography"? Please. The fact that a photo is taken with a phone vs a DSLR vs medium format vs etc etc is irrelevant. You don't need a (relatively) expensive camera to take good photos. You need creativity and opportunity, that's it.

Fisheye lens

Does anyone know of a good fish eye lens that works well with our phone
Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk
There are lots on ebay for very little money. Fisheye, wide angle and macro. But as for them being truly 'good'.... Thats a different matter. They are good enough for some different fun photos, but no good for professional use obviously.
One thing though, is that a lot attach via magnets on a sticky metal ring you place around the camera lens. I have one for my g2, and it needed to use 2 metal rings on top of each other as the magnet messed with the focus. With 2 rings, it is fine.
But, as the area around the lens is not perfectly flat, the rings on mine do not stay stuck and come off when removing the added lens. I'll try getting some pics of pics taken with it up.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
Thanks that would really help. I'm assuming you have the Verizon variant because I believe the camera on it is not flat. I have the Sprint variant and it is flat so hopefully that won't be a problem
Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk
No I have the 802. By not flat completely, i mean the very slight plastic rim that goes all the way around the edge of the buttons/lens. It is a very small difference but enough to limit the stickiness a bit.
But nothing the right adhesive couldn't fix I guess.
Heres a link which shows some shots on a listing for the type I have -
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=221365446071
Not strictly a fisheye, but on photos it does give a little fisheye effect oddly.
A generic search on ebay for mobile phone camera fisheye lens should give you loads of results.

Hello,
I would love to buy some lenses for LG G2, but of course i dont understand it at all
Would you please be so kind and recommend me some of of ebay?( Im from czech republic so it would be awesome if it was shipping free)
- I have seen that ebay has some pretty cheap lenses, like around 5 dollars, do they really work ?(of cours not for professional photos, but just for fun as a little extra christmas present?)
- could you please send me direct link, like i said i dont understand it and i would love it if you could pick me some good (and cheap) ones
- could you also include any extra things that i need to buy for it to work?
Thank you very very much
Jane xx
That's bulls hit, it's really crap effect.
What a coincidence, right today I was playing around with some old soviet SLR lens and one of them was pretty interesting - from one side it was working kind of a fish-eye lens, from the other side like a zoom one (prime lens, so the zoom was passive) with neat-o dof.
Anyway, I once had a cheap fish-eye lens from ebay, it was crap. The only good ones are expensive as hell.

camera thread?

On the fence on this one...
Got a Note1 right now, obviously, no OIS, the flex doesn't have it either.
I use the camera app FV-5, and have EXCELLENT result. I use my device a TON for the
camera, to document problems with machines I work on, including some macro shots, indoor
lighting most of the time, so the camera quality is important to me.
Could someone post a few photos? Would be nice if someone was using the FV-5 app, in
macro mode so I could see how well it holds up.
TIA!

Everyone's opinions are different I realize, but my person opinion of the flex camera is that it is so incredibly bad that I almost returned the phone for that reason only. I love taking pictures, and assumed it would have a good camera because it is so similar to the G2. Upon getting it home, I took several pictures and took the same pictures next to my wife's new xperia Z1s. The Sony makes the LG look like a complete joke. The whites on my pictures are as blue as blue can be. Anything dark is blotchy as all hell. The pictures in general look grainy, especially on the G Flex screen, but even if I take them off of the phone they look bad. Out door pictures are better, but inside the flash only makes matters worse as far as the blues. Its just hands down the worst cell phone camera I have used in years. I tried a few different apps on the market in hopes that it would help, but I found most to be really slow, or not any better than the stock app. If you are a picture taker, personally, I'd recommend anything other than the G Flex. Aside from the screen and the camera, it is a good phone that could be made great with vanilla android if the community every figures out the bootloader... but if your interests are the camera... pass on this one. Its down right awful. If you're not concerned about the phone's size, check the xperia out. The camera on my wife's phone is phenomenal. In any situation it takes beautiful photos from the stock app with zero effort.
Check out these Flex pictures in the review. They look pretty good to me for a camera phone that is.

The problem I have with the Z Ultra, is no LED/flash. The low/poor lighting might be an issue, from some of the
sample photos I've seen. The Xperia Z1/ZU only are 5" screens.
My Note1 is a 5.3, looking to go to a 6" screen this round.

If you looked at the film that covered the lense, it didn't actually cover the lense center. There is a hole in it for the shooter even if you don't remove it. That wasn't the cause. The shooter is just wonky on finding good contrast for focus, especially anything less than 6"
I have also the same problem.

Source, because no. This rear camera is not a wide angle in the strictest sense. By your logic it would take pictures of its own bezel if the small film would be in line of sight. That's not the case, the front camera is an 88 degree wide for close field (selfies and such) the rear is not.

Im sorry but I had the same problem with the s4, s5, and so did a whole bunch of people. If you dont know what your talking about then why are you still arguing. It clearly messes up the focus because A: Dust and hair start to collect over it and B: it keeps trying to focus while its on which causes blurry pics
And if OP could chime in I bet removing this made his camera better
I wasn't arguing, I stated its not a wide angle, it isn't. The front lenses is 88degree for wide. I also still stand(with no sticker) that the rear shooter isn't the greatest at focus. These sensors are still just over hyped webcams. My bias towards specific detail comes from photography experience.
Further, I hope OPs problem is solved too.

Like you, I kept it on my S4 for a long time and it didn't cause any problems either. However, like I mentioned before, not all of these phones are alike. It might not cause a problem for some while it does for others.
To the OP, the best thing to do is remove it and see if the problem persists. If it does, exchange the phone until you get one that works right.

New Camera for the M8

I love everything about this phone but, the camera sux. Hope HTC gives current M8 owners a special deal. I doubt it, lol

I'll pass, nothing wrong with my camera, higher Megapixels means larger file size. Pain in the ass trying to send pics through MMS. I'll wait for the M9, full glass screen looks sexy.
Once i cleaned that film off the lense the camera has been perfect.

That is the one thing that I dislike about HTC, they keep releasing phone after phone after phone with additional features and functions. So when you paid for the latest and greatest you have outdated technology...

There is this other technology called a real camera if you wanted a poster size picture. Even with a 13 megapixel cellphone camera it is going to look grainy compared to a SLR camera.

I did the same thing, one day the pics looked horrible then I read up on it and did the toothpaste and cotton swab trick and my pics have been great. Very strange how it went bad like that, but, as it was said the pictures for me do what I need.
Tooth paste with a cotton swab?.....hmmmm mite have to try that

I personally had better luck with the corner of a credit card method. I tried the toothpaste and swab but I guess it wasn't gritty enough (not enough baking soda in the paste) or something. For me it just made the film on the lens worse, then I tried the credit card method and worked like a charm.

I agree that the camera on this phone sucks. Looking forward to Nexus6.

There is this other technology called a real camera if you wanted a poster size picture. Even with a 13 megapixel cellphone camera it is going to look grainy compared to a SLR camera.

Exactly. I don't know why people think higher megapixels = better pictures. This camera is fine to me.

+1 on this. Folks gotta keep in mind that the camers isnt an Olympus or a Nikon. Its a phone camera. There are alot of editing apps out there to make the pics you take with a phone much much better. I use SnapSeed for editing with some pretty impressive results.
The camera on this thing sucks. Period. The front camera is ridden with distortion as is the back camera. I have a pro camera as I am a photographer, howvwer I expect my phone that was advertised as having amazing camera. to at least take decent pics. It just doesn't. I do like take the occasional selfie, but never end up using it because there is just too much distortion. People say we expect too much from cell phone cameras. BS. I had a G2, it took excellent pics. As did all of my iPhones. This phones camera is a POS

I honestly have no issue with the camera on this device. Ask the selfies I've taken turned it great. Maybe your camera lenses need to be cleaned?
I've had two m8's. Both have suffered from terrible distortion. Start your front camera and take a pic of yourself. Notice how if the camera Is on anything but the same plane as your face your head gets distorted. The top of your head looks stretched out, etc. There have been a lot of other people complainging about the distortion and that isn't caused by a dirty lens

As a photographer you should know that even with a dslr you get distortion depending on focal length and lens.. You expect better from a front facing cell cam??I Don't personally use the front cam as I don't take selfies but rear cam has produced some great shots, but it's a cell phone so instagram is all that I use it for. Wouldn't dare pull it out to take pics of clients.

You are absolutely right, but they also have in camera software that automatically corrects it under certain conditions. Or you fix it in post. Heck it also depends on the lens manufacturer. One lens can be 50mm with almost no distortion, the next 50mm lens could be riddled with distortion so it also depends on the lens you choose. Also with SLR cameras there a thousand lenses so it's a different ball game. This is one lens, one phone, one focal length, with absolutely repeatable results. That could not have been possibly been missed during the testing of this phone. If they wanted to keep costs low, understandable because it IS just a phone canera, but they could have easily compensated by fixing it in the cameras software It's bad enough to a point where I'm ready to switch devices... as much as I love this phone. If you don't take selfies that's fine, but for us that do, having your head elongated and your facial features distorted if the phone is not absolutely 100% perfectly parallel to your face is to me, absurd..considering there are a ton of other phones, similarly equipped camera wise, that do not suffer from this issue.
It boggles me. I can deal with a little distortion. However the distortion in the "selfie" camera is extreme. Ruins every shot. This should have been a situation in which during testing and software development, which IM SURE THEY EXPERIENCED, that they have put a script in there to fix the distortion. They knew they put a wide angle lens in the front camera assembly, and should have put the software fixes there to correct it, because every m8 experiences it (I've tried SEVERAL. and there are tons of complaints about it) Do I expect too much? NO! There are a thousand other camera phones that have wide front elements, that do NOT suffer from the same level of distortion, and if they do have it, they were smart enough to have the software fix it before it spits out the final picture to you. Flagship android device, ruined by a terrible front facing camera. My opinion

Completely understand, and maybe that's why in the new phone models they went in a different direction with the front cam.
