So, I'm bored with my Nexus. My battery life blows, I refuse to buy another battery for a phone that I'll be getting rid of soon. Also, I can't stand at&t. I'm wanting to get back to Big Red every day. Lucky for me, my contract termination date is soon.
That said, I love the Nexus, I bought it because of it's top-of the line technology. I don't want a Droid 2 it's too thick. The Droid X is too big, plus it's been out since July. Which means that a new one will be out sooner or later. Too bad the N2 is t-mo and maybe at&t, but I really don't want to lock-in to at&t for another 2 years.
Anybody else in this boat? What are you planning on doing? I'm hoping that the next generation android phones come out soon, face cameras and all. Anybody got any good rumors about new "super-phones"?
Nexus One is a beautiful product... I would like to wait for Nexus Two if there is any~ I got my Nexus One on 2nd March.

I agree it is beautiful. I noticed you're in Australia, for which I'm very jealous. However, I'm not sure what the Australian Android scene is like down there, but it's changing daily here in the US.
Check out the battery cal thread. We just got the battery changes into pershoot's kernel this week. So now you can pull all your battery values from the battery EEPROM chip, and tweak them. We are experimenting with squeezing out more capacity now that we can change voltage, current, etc. Check the battery thread for more info
nothing for awhile, i just upgraded from my G1 to a N1 3 weeks ago and i don't honestly see anything hardware wise ground breaking happening that will make me want to get a new phone anytime soon.
a buddy of mine has the droid X, nice phone but man that screen looks like crap compared to the AMOLED screen the viewing angles not that it matters is very bad on them as well.
I think when they come up with a newer battery tech or phones that can have 2x+ the battery life and still be just as good as an N1 i would consider it but it's not going to happen for at least a year if not longer. in the mean time i don't have problems with battery life on average days and when i know i will be away from home/work for awhile i have a spare charged battery to make sure it stays alive

As soon as something that has a high quality build with a good camera equipped, I will jump ship. As of right now, I don't think that any Android phone has a good camera (in my opinion). I think we definitely live in an age where cellphone cameras can replace digital cameras but, unfortunately, there is no Android phone that has impressed me yet in the imaging department.
I agree. My wife wife has an iPhone 3G and I can brag all day about mu N1 being better. But when it gets to the camera, her phone is much better. Android phones have a long way ti catch up.

Droid Terminator... Early next year...
Nexus One has a decent camera, but the video recording quality is atrocious, ie. typical HTC video camera quality. Even the Sony X10 Mini Pro takes better videos (constant 30fps indoors). That's probably the only big knock against my Nexus One.
N1 stays
With currently available options I am unable to justify a switch from N1.
Thats unless someone releases an unlocked phone with a 1.5 dual core processor and 1G RAM with sustainable battery backup.
I'll wait for the next batch of new Android devices from the manufacturers once the WP7(which looks good) dust settles down.
They will pry my N1 from my cold dead hands.

Here are the features I would really like to have on such a device (in no particular order):
More internal storage. WTF were Google and HTC thinking putting only 512MB in the Nexus One?! With app sizes growing like crazy (e.g. Adobe Flash/Air or any 3D game) you hit the limit at 50-60 apps. Froyo improves things a little, but you're only postponing the inevitable "Device memory low" message. 8GB should be the minimum in today's handsets, preferably closer to 16-32GB.
Hardware keyboard. I'm getting used to Swype, but nothing beats the keyboard. Either slide or candy bar (Droid Pro) form factors will do.
True multi-touch screen. N1's screen is using old technology that registers only 2 points, and not very well at that. Just try crossing the axis while pinch-zooming to see what I mean.
Front-facing camera. I know it's a gimmick, but there are some pretty cool apps in the works that take advantage of it.
Better main camera. I'm not talking "moar megapiksels", I mean higher quality optics.
Larger and better screen. N1's 3.7 inches is a good enough size for a mobile device, but only just. I'd really prefer my next handset to have at least a 4.3" screen. Also, assuming Samsung stops hogging their Super AMOLEDs, I'd love to have that because of its supposed battery savings.
Larger battery. At some point we need to realize that with our changing usage habits, those 1500 mAh batteries just don't last for one day. Faster processors, GPU accelerated OS, bigger screens, and overall increased usage all take a toll. It's not your grandfather's Blackberry that sits in his pocket all day. 2400 mAh should be the standard nowadays, even if it makes the phone a millimeter thicker than the iPhone.
Better GPU. Sorry to say, but N1's Adreno 200 is a piece of crap. Forget Galaxy S, it can't even compare to the original Droid's PowerVR chip! I don't play many 3D intensive games on my Nexus One, but the ones I do are barely able to run. Gimme a Tegra2 or ARM's new Mali processor, and we're talkin'
More efficient CPU. It doesn't even need to be faster than 1GHz. As the G2 proved, clock speeds don't mean anything. Multi-core, better architecture, etc. should all be coming very soon to Android manufacturers.
HDMI-out port. Not all of my TVs at home are networkable, so having a video tank is very desirable to me.
CDMA and GSM (both T-Mobile ant AT&T 3G frequencies) radios. SIM lock is not the only thing restricting me from switching between carriers. I'm willing to pay extra to be free from any one particular network. Of course LTE, WiMAX and other future technologies will make this point moot. For the foreseeable future though, just CDMA and GSM radios will do.
Now I realize that with all these features comes a hefty price tag, but I'm willing to pay it. I don't want a carrier subsidy, I just want a kick-ass handset that will do what I want it to do.

All I want is another aluminum uni-body, ulockable-bootloader phone (just like the Nexus One) with the following feature:
a dual-core 1GHz+ processor
at least 1 GB of on-board storage
sdcard slot
I don't think that is too much to ask, is it? So far, From what I see out there, I'm sticking with my N1. If the HTC DesireHD2/Pyramid actually exists and has a dual-core processor, I'll likely jump to that IFF we can get S-OFF.

what exactly is S-OFF with all these new HTC phones? i keep seeing it around but i am not familiar with what it is.
to answer this thread, i've been in upgrade hell, i simply cant figure out what i would want to replace my nexus one with. nothing out there seems to be "better" than the nexus one for me. is it too hard to get a nice solid aluminum 3.7-4 inch phone with notification light and build quality? the desire s is the highest on my list right now, but that stupid side-charge port turns me off. and no notification light. couldnt they just make the charge port on the bottom like normal?

S-OFF stands for Security Off. Without getting technical, think of is as an unlocked bootloader.
I'll go for the HTC Pyramid if it shows up unlocked & 4G for tmob usa. Keeping my great N1 till then...

for me it has to be htc iv experimented and the dev support is with htc it will be a sense phone i cant stand stock
I am going to keep my N1 until the LG Optimus G2x or HTC Pyramid come out on Tmo, but I will wait to see if the Cyanogen team support them. I am not willing to get a phone without CM, or not being able to use custom Roms.

- Dual core? Ya, nice... But early reviews on the Atrix (BGR) state they really don't notice much of a difference. Add to that the ease of customizing ROMS/kernals/OC on the HD vs. others it's probably a wash until optimization. I mainly use the phone for calls/text/email/web browsing. Not much of a phone gamer or movie guy.
- HSDPA+? Desire HD is twice the data rate of the N1, which is quick for me so...
So ya, I think easier development > next gen features for me for now...

I still think you should go for the next gen. of phones. Duo core processor still manage web pages,games,apps better than a single core plus battery might be better I think. In my opinion why invest money on something that might be old in a few months? now if you have cash to play now and play in a few months then why not.
You'll be getting:
1) Faster GPU for games.
2) Bigger screen.
3) Proper multitouch.
It's good, the question is - how much do you value it, and how much will the upgrade cost you. It'll also be the deciding point, I believe - for example, if I was offered DHD for free or close-to-zero sum, I'd take it without thinking (and convince my wife to take the Nexus instead of her HTC Elf), if I had to pay full price for any of the current phones, I wouldn't bother thinking about the upgrade - the difference isn't worth the money IMHO.

I have both handsets, and can offer some comments regarding the differences.
The DHD's larger screen and faster data connection makes a large difference in basic web browsing (especially the screen). I no longer browse the web on my N1.
The email application on the DHD is much better than the N1, with category and organization features that the N1 simply doesn't have. This is due to Sense, mainly.
The DHD's touchscreen is more responsive than the N1.
Depending on usage - the N1 does have better battery life. However, if you are not draining your N1 battery on a daily basis now, then it's likely you won't drain the DHD either. For myself, I can go a full day with my DHD's stock battery.
The only detractor for the DHD (in my opinion) outside of less battery life, is the phone doesn't fit as well in my pocket vs the N1. But that's hardly a "problem".
Having said all that, I still love and use my N1...just to a lesser degree.

Hi, I'm leaving my garbage Xperia Sola after 2 years of blood cry because of its horrible SoC, its horrible software and his horrible support. Now I'm very interested in buying this new Moto G 2014. I ha ve some question for people more expert than me.
1) Do you know when it is going to be released in Italy?
2) What are the pros of this phone (other then price)?
3) Which features are a little economic or can create some troubles?

Snap 400 is a reliable proc, is there some other product with about same price that use Snap 410 for comparison?

It's already available in some european stores, like amazon.
I mean by sound quality, is poor, but i didn't test it myself.
Snap 400 uses A7 cores which makes it very slow compared to other SOCs, it's fast enough for now, but in the future i'm not sure. Snap 410 already uses new A53 cores which are a lot faster, efficient and supports 64-bit. The HTC Desire 510 comes with 410.

I doubt that after Project Svelte in KitKat, they'd go back to a more cpu intensive way of operating. Android L having more animations, imo, will still be perfectly okay to run on a Snap 400, + ART Optimizations will also help. However, we can only wait and see :silly:

I hope soo... They said i'll be easier on cpu and ram with ART, that's why i ordered this phone, i didn't spent an extra 130€ on the nexus 5 because of the battery.

I know, that came from me. I think that for now we have to wait the Android L generation to know which phone is old and which is not; and usually my phones' life is of 2yrs or more, so I have to avoid to buy a phone and maybe 6 months later 1GB of ram become a ridiculous amount. I bought in 2011 a 512MB RAM phone, and now i have lots of troubles with it.
Let's see the price of Z1C at Christmas, when z3C will be already released.
I'm looking for a device to test android. I'm an iPhone user but always wanted to try the android world.
The other phones (htc m8, galaxy S5, xperia Z2) are too expensive in my country (damn taxes) and the low range devices are too underpowered and don't have a SD expansion (important to me).
I want a mid range phone to taste and if I decide to move to android I'll wait the Android L generation phones.
I don't play any games besides angry birds and boom beach. I do listen a lot of music (car Bluetooth) and GPS navigation (waze)
Maybe is the Moto G a good cost-benefit device?
I got mine yesterday. Performs just as well if not slightly faster than my NEXUS 4 (in terms of responsiveness). Limited memory can be a problem if you run multiple (memory intensive) apps simultaneously. When I run facebook app and chrome, it'll sometimes kick FB off memory, but it takes 2 sec to reload so not a big deal for me. Speakers are decent IMO. They are loud and distort at high volume, but knocking the volume down 2-3 steps help. Screen quality is very good and the gamut is similar to TV standard (~72% NTSC from what I can tell). The only quibble I found is stiffness of the buttons.

PS: I prefer SP 400 cos A7 is still more efficient than Cortex-A53. Also, ART should boost performance even further. I only wish the new Moto had 1.5 GB of RAM instead of 1.

Why are you comparing a 179$ phone with a 400$ phone? I don't understand why a lot of people compare a less than 200$ phone with a 400$ phone.
You should compare the new Moto X with Xperia Z1C, then it would be a fair comparison.

My phone broke a week ago(Xperia Z1) and Sony's customer service won't repair it because it was rooted and they will destroy it so I'm through with their bs lol
I looked up what phones I could get that had specs but there weren't many phones available, they seem to be able to sell anything with sh*tty specs here in Belgium xD
The moto X was one of the phones, the other phone was the oneplus one but even though it's a great device, my devices usually have hardware defects and need to be sent back and I've heard about the terrible customer service and I am not in the mood for bad customer service(Looking at you Sony!)

Love the specs, love how the device looks, storage is only 16gb but that shouldn't be an issue (XZ1 is also 16gb) but the ONLY thing steering me away from buying it is it's battery... because it is only 2300mAh I am really worried if it will last me a day! The AMOLED display should certainly help if you check the time often but I'm not sure about it!

This is the wrong device for you, don't buy it. The battery life of this one isn't bad, but its only 2300mah, which is only enough to get from morning till evening on medium use. Expect about 3 to 3.5hrs screen on time.
People do not purchase Motorola devices for custom roms, because its already stock Android with some light, but useful customization. Most people who use Moto X do not install custom roms because it would lose those Motorola features. There are not many custom roms for it. Also there is more chance of permanently brick a Motorola if you don't know what you're doing. If you want custom roms, I suggest you get the upcoming Nexus phone this year.
I suggest looking at the two latest Moto X which will have better battery life. The flagship Moto X Style (3000mah), and the midrange Moto X Play (3630mah). They both have microSD card so you can store lots of media. This Moto X 2014 do not have microSD card.
You might be interested in the Moto G 3rd gen as well if you are not playing any heavy games. It's a budget phone, but with decent specs if you get the version with 2GB ram, have microSD and the battery life is supposed to last very long.

I normally go on the engadget battery tests to give a ball-park idea. The Moto X 2014 did about 10.5 hours of video usage, the Z1 gave "over 12" though they don't say how much over 12 it was.
Looking at that, it seems to depend how you rate the Z1 battery. If it's only just adequate then perhaps it might be best to look elsewhere. I find the battery OK to go from morning to bed time but I generally have quite low screen on time.
My normal usage is Spotify over bluetooth (perhaps 1.5 hours a day), text messages, web browsing, Viber messaging and a little Words with Friends. It generally results in 2 hours on screen time, and I'll make it to 11pm with 30% left. Also of note, that would be 80% on WiFi (I have good WiFi at home and work) and 20% 4G. Performance would vary a fair bit if it was the other way around.
Edit: this is stock lollipop.
Hey guys I'm about to buy a refurbished Xperia Z from Amazon, but I'd like you guys to give me some advice. Do you recommend me? My main concerns are battery, display(they say blacks are grayish), camera and sound. I come from a galaxy s3 and lumia 640 XL(maybe someone has/had one of these smartphones and could give me some thoughts). I suppose the performance is great. I also noticed the device has some pretty good community and development(which the s3 lacks a bit)-which is also very important to me... am I right? Also, how does AOSP-based lollipop(may I dare and also say marshmallow ) run on it? Sorry guys for too many questions and also sorry for my english.

FIRST- if you're buying it for $100 or less maybe it is till a good deal, otherwise maybe it is better to see at other low-to-mid-range
SECOND- yes, the performance is good, even better with lollipop, screen looks better now (maybe sonybravia got better, maybe because lollipop has more white in it and the white is being displayed better), but anyway you have to UNDERCLOCK it in order to get a decent battery life
THIRD- battery life is very disappointing, you HAVE to underclock it and root it and greenify it to get any good battery life, unless you can charge it every 12 hours
FOURTH - the device is getting older and so the interest in this device (im talking about support from devs)
FIFTH - the phone gets hot, like really really hot when you're using it playing games (unless you underclock it), and since the back cover is only a adhesive line, when it gets hotter with the help off the Nfc antenna (which is set to push against the backcover) the backcover gets up and looses its waterproofness
SIX- the flaps - the damn flaps- they're everywhere - and you need to open them every-time you charge the phone, put on the headphones, remove the sim, remove the microSD, and they tend to get loose with time especially the one of the charger since you need to charge it frequently
NOW... that I told you about it downsides, its not a bad phone nowdays, it has a big and very beautiful display, connectivity is like the best i've ever tried, performance is pretty good (cpu + gpu ), camera performs really well - especially in macro, dev support for now is good.
Overall for someone who has it I think it can take another one or two years, but I personally would not buy it unless I find it for cheap or cannot buy a used phone. Personally I would look into a HTC M8 or a LG G3, maybe even used.

Thank you so much for your elaborated answer You really made me think about it.
FIRST- it costs me about $160(in a very good condition) and I really can't pay any more than this for a smartphone. It's actually a pretty good deal for what it normally costs in my country. If you/somebody could recommend me a better phone for this price point(taking into consideration the development community)...

THIRD- well I have to say it sounds dissapointing. Underclocking...doesn't sound that good to me... although I'd have no problem using greenify. 12 hours with 4g on? What's the usage?(heavy...moderate...)
FOURTH- this is the first thing I look when looking for an android device. If it doesn't allow custom ROMs and doesn't have a decent community behind then I don't buy it.
FIFTH- the "gettin really hot" thing sounds also really dissapointin. I'm not a heavy gamer but I do like to play graphic-intensive games from time to time. So is it really that annoing? About the waterproofness... really not important to me.
SIX- pretty annoing huh? Especially the headphones thing. What if you cut them out? You think there'd be any inconvenience on doing this aside from loosing the waterproof thing(and design of course)?
Well... so yeah some bad news for me here. But I can't find a decent phone wich also has community behind for this price. And another which makes me go for it are the 2GB of RAM.

Buying today XZ is stupid... seriously.
When I bought my XZ price of Z1compact was almost the same and it still is, its 20$-30$ difference for most of time(New XZ cost about 180$ z1c 200$)
And for that price you can buy WAY better phones, starting from Galaxy S4 to LG G series. And you want to stick to Sony you can get even z1 or used z2
As far as I love this phone I would not recommend it to anyone, battery is below average, camera is worst than my old Arc S, and those cover flaps are pain in the A##
This is best example of phone that look good, but those small bugs in everyday usage make it annoying to use...
And yes I still use it :] Because after using new phones... I found out that most of them are the same: average battery, and looots of small bugs that make them annoying after some time. So I decide to change phones once per 3-4 years...

For that price NO! Performance with LP is good, camera not so good even with LP. Didnt have issues with overheating, connectivity is good. Screen and colors looks pretty nice for me.

Well,
ONE - if you want a phone with good Dev community support and with that budget you'll have to take a look at ex-flagship devices, like HTC One M7 (this one remains IMHO one of the best devices ever), LG G2(very good camera from what I've been told, and powerful cpu), Samsung Galaxy S4(well because it is a Samsung and everybody has one so many developers...)
THREE - Underclock means you lower the frequency of the Cpu (example. it goes from 1.5 Ghz quad-core to 1.1 Ghz quad-core), I like more uncerclock than greenify, and underclocking at 1.1 Ghz in my opinion gives the best performance/battery life/heat ratio. Usage is normal, 1 hour browsing; 1 hour listening to songs (in 3g, even when 4g is available I disable it); 1 hour 9gag and gets at evening with 30-35%...
FOUR - many custom roms for now, and quality is really good, im using currently the 5.1.1 modified and runs pretty good.
FIVE- when you underclock (which I recommend!) you give your device better battery life but also it heats less. If you don't mind the waterproofness then it's better because I wouldn't call Waterproof a really thin bezel of adhesive (They're crazy !!!)
SIX- yeah, they're annoying but anyway you can live with that, and design is really good and would be a shame if you removed them.
So my list woud be;
1.Htc One m7
2.Lg g2
3.Samsung S4 or Xperia Z

Well it seems the camera is not that good as I thought. Do you think moto g 2/3 has better camera? Although they only have 1GB or RAM.

As an XZ owner i would definitely recommend you to go with Moto G2/3. Beside better camera there will be MM support for both the 2gen and 3gen Moto, while not for XZ.

It seems the decision is getting harder and harder, although I already bought it because I don't wanna loose the deal. It's not available anymore at this price after buying it. I'm waiting for it to arrive in about two days I'll test it and if it doesn't satisfy me I'll return it.
ONE - Those devices are about $50 more expensive.
THREE - Maybe underclock could do the job, but will it still run smooth at lets say 1.2ghz? Anyway I think for the usage you described the battery doesn't sound that bad.
FOUR - Yeah, I'm looking at the hacking section and I'm stunned
FIVE - well, I'll happily underclock it if it doesn't affect performance too much. Maybe setting to the normal clock when gaming. And for the waterproofness thing... I'm shocked Anyway... I don't mind.
SIX - I guess...
From those devices you mentioned the only one I can afford is the Xperia Z. I really can't pay more than that for a device.
So, do you think I should buy a low end device from this or last year like the moto g 2014? I'm scared of the 1GB of RAM.
I live in Spain and price is a bit high here in Europe. I can buy from Amazon.es/fr/de/it... but I think I only have two options: buy a low-end device with no support from community or an exflagship device with support like the Xperia Z. I also think having 2GB of RAM is important right? I can't spend more than 150€/$160... ad I guess I'm asking too much from a device for this price. I really appreciate your help.

It all depends of usage but i wouldn't worry about it so much. Motorola comes with almost pure Android.

Moto G (2nd generation) doesn't stand a chance to Xperia Z!
XZ has better specs, better screen, better CPU, more Ram, more internal memory ecc.
Yes, the Moto G (2nd generation) is being updated to Marshmallow but really with all the support from the Dev's we can still get unofficial AOSP Marshmallow Roms.
PS.: one more thing, I currently live in Italy and in big cities it is really easy to find used phones from people that sell them at a local website. I've been checking the prices for some time because I wanted to get a better phone and phones like the LG G3 go as low as 200 euro. Htc One M7 can be found for 150 euro in really good condition, one thing is that you don't have warranty, only if they give you the bill of the phone, then it is as you had bought it(be careful though not giving you a printed bill from the internet.) if you can live with that, that would get you a really good phone with low money.

Yeah, XZ specs are really impressive for me, but the problems mentioned worry me. The screen seems a bit poor to me from what I read. Maybe the Moto G has a better screen and battery(camera also? I doubt it). Anyway... the XZ is on its way and I can't wait to test it!!!
The biggest problem I have with buying a used phone from people is, aside from the warranty- which is also important, the fact that I can't return it if it doesn't satisfy me. Thank God for Amazon!! lol :victory:

in my country a NEW xperia z costs around 280-300 euro, i think people still prefer it
