Light or Dark Color Themed Forum!?!? HELP PLZ - Off-topic

I am making this forum and I want opinions on whether I should make is light colored themed of dark color themed.
I heard from somewhere that dark themed websites engages the audience and stuff, but white themes also look pretty good, like this website.
What I know
Light themed websites look ok, but they are every where.
Some dark themed websites look kind of cool
so what should I do !?!? (its called an interroban)

Just put both and give a choice

Dark is always best IMO. But if possible, give a choice

like a xda, use light

Design wise, Light has been a major trend for the last 10 years. (I blame Apple for that.)
But the problem, that many designers ignore, is that white screens cause eye strain, migraines, insomnia, epylepsy, and severe headaches. Also, White on an AMOLED screen uses 80% more battery than black. (Because Samsung's AMOLED creates black by turning the LED off.)
You need to know your target audience. Are they mainly Samsung users visiting the forum from a mobile device? Then go with Black. The difference between constant use of a black website vs a white one is about 8 hours of battery life. Are they mainly general users and will mainly visit the site from a non-samsung device or desktop? Then go with White.
But the best option would be to simply provide users with a toggle that says "Light | Dark". Use the Light version as the main (in line with modern web design), but give users an easy to find option to swith to dark. (Don't hide it in the user settings, nobody looks in there).
Although I would probably opt for dark grey as opposed to full black (Which does negate the battery life a bit, but it looks better.). Dark grey is more professional. Try #2F2F2F. (47, 47, 47 RGB)

John.

Dark and darker.....always.
✯ ✵ ✯ Judging the Unjustly ✯ ✵ ✯

i normally prefer light ui's but i think in this case the dark one looks better

I chose Dark cause: easier on the eyes and battery. Give peeps the choice though m8.

Dark is better, especially with a choice of accent colors. Like dark gray with either blue or lighter gray accents are my preferences. I sometimes switch back and forth between light and dark myself depending on what color codes people use for text in their posts

Dark.
I'm always running away from white themes. I just don't like them. And sometimes my that white makes my eyes hurt.

What do you think the next colors of android will be

Every major version number or so (with the exception of 3.x and 4.x) Google seems to do a major overhaul in the color scheme of android. So, for Android 5.0, what do you think the color scheme will be, or what do you think it should be? My opinion is that the next color will be more bold, I would be inclined to say orange complimented with pastel colors of some sort. Why, you ask?
Note: I am speaking in terms of stock vanilla android, OEM skins are irrelevant
Looking at the trend of our favorite search giant:
Android 1.6:

White and grey, sure its cool in theory, but a 4x4 grid of icons was cooler IMO (basically iPhone still had the upper hand)

Same thing, just changed the color of the app drawer icon *yawn*

It is here that we see Android become a preteen, it seems more polished with a button based app drawer and a nice little overhaul with performance
Android 2.2

Bravo! It is now more user friendly with the addition of the icons on the sides, and the transparent dock bar makes it a wonderful addon to the experience when coupled with the new found live wallpaper support

This is where we realized Android was a force, Andy had a kick ass night at make out peak and came back a man. Notice the semi minimalistic style transformation implemented in Gingerbread. Icons are bolder, they follow a guideline to create a synchronized interface. The black, grey and green color scheme make it the talk of the town in a club or a board meeting. Its professional.

It would take a dissertation to describe the nerdgasm I had when I saw Honeycomb. I watched the press release 3 times even though it was over an hour long. Blue was a change no one expected. A true minimalistic interface, ON SCREEN BUTTONS, scrollable widgets, an overhaul that made Ebenezer Scrooge jump for joy. Android had officially become a man. The Blue and Black was a great addition. We considered 3.0 to be the "tron" interface.
Android 4.0-4.2
The awesomeness was downsized and upgraded to fit tablets and phones alike, all the goodness of Honeycomb on a screen the fraction of the size of an HC tablet. The shade of blue was lightened, and they downsized on how much jet black was in the interface. Now if you look at 4.2, they hint at another shift. The clock app, for example, is grey and white, while I don't see this as the final change, I think the anticipated Android 4.5 "Key Lime Pie" update will lighten up, and by 5.0 the entire color scheme will change. So, what do you think.?

Creating a white theme is a massive task as you need to invert all the dark apps, and that is a lot.
On any given ROM the majority are using a dark theme. You only have to look at the work @steveboss has done inverting the white apps and the time he has spent doing so.
If your bootloader is unlocked try MIUI, they like it nice and white.
One other thing, if you use a white theme, be prepared for your battery to get the s&*t kicked out of it.

Is that so? LT25 has an LCD screen, not OLED.
thats not really true, what dully posted there, also with a light theme you can use your phone with a lower screenbrightness than with a dark theme, thats my observations.
so no, not more battery drain with light theme...im using light themed rom since many weeks

Yep. Especially outdoors a screen using a bright design remains better readable with lower brightness settings. The screen is by far the biggest user of battery power. With power considerations in mind a white screen is the best, except for OLED screens.

The brighter the screen, the more power required to produce the brilliant whites which means the more power consumed.
I can testify to this after using a dark theme i switched to a light theme to improve sunlight legibility and my battery suffered so i switched back.
Either way i don't care, it's your phone, your battery, do what you want with it.:good:
I think the LCD backlight is always on, regardless black or white, and the LCD blocks the light for black pixels.
... and therefore the black screen even uses a few electrons more electricity. Unless it is an OLED.
And that's what immerblind wanted to say. I add we can reduce the brightness level by using a white theme. Just go outside and read a black screen with white font, and then switch to a black font screen. 10 - 20 % lower display brightness is possible, much better than any battery app with there best feature being the marketing.
And Tide washes even whiter than white!

This might sound as stupid question. How many shades of grey does e-ink display allows or can achieve? I have read that it supports only 16 shades of grey. Then I found pretty convincing article with supporting pictures inside on why is it so and how did they tweaked their device to display 32 shades of gray. In theory human eyes can make an accurate distinction between 200 different "shades" of any color but as I understand it is actually basic principle of the screen that does not permit us to go that far on this screen. I see this 61 pictures here on my tablet screen but are they mutually distinguishable on e-ink screen? Boy my head hurts from this word soup I typed and hope that you understand what did I just asked.
I have a little app on my website called Wallpaper.apk
I used it on all my devices, both color LCD and Nooks.
For me, I just like two backgrounds, white for Nooks, and "aqua" (#008080, Windows XP desktop!) for color LCD.
I was going to add a hex value option but never bothered.
The thing is, wallpaper also has to get scaled and moved around depending on where you are on the launcher screens.
This is pretty useless for solid backgrounds on an underpowered device like a Nook.
That's why in my GlowHacks patches I just patch /system/priv-app/partner.apk - ImageWallpaper$DrawableEngine.smali to just paint white directly.
If you feel strongly, you can just edit "canvas.drawColor(0xffffffff);" in that file.
I have a pile of questions on the subject of color palette or in this case grayscale but I don't want to post them here as not all of them are relevant to this thread/topic. Can I send you a PM instead when I find time to write them down in I hope understandable English?

Sure, but we're not doing much anyway, why not just here?
Since the wallpaper is being resized and it's a uniform color, why not just have the image be one pixel?
Some (many? all?) Androids resize the image itself before it saves it as wallpaper anyway.
So, here's 256 monochrome one pixel images.
(I'll still stick with my white from the GlowHacks patch.)
Edit: To answer your question, 16 shades unless you are using some other mode when it can be as low as 2 shades.
On the other hand, the actual frame buffer is 5-6-5 RGB 16 bit.
You can take a nice color grab. See my adbgrab.exe in the signature.

OK. I didn't want to hijack the thread with topics possibly unrelated to the one intended by OP but why not. It would be nice if NST screen had ability to present 256 shades as that correspond with human eye ability to perceive about 200 shades of single color and would make some color remapping easier but it is what it is and at present moment none have tried/achieved more than that on NST obviously which is information I needed to know. Nice hack with one pixel wallpaper dough . I agree that white is best background for e-ink and black is best for LED/OLED screens. Reducing number of shades was never in question although I can see how that can be use full in certain situations. Most useful info you gave me is that about 16 bit actually used on NST despite even 4 bit would suffice given the 16 shades use on screen. Had to Google 5 6 5 part and that is most useful info you gave me. Before that I was scrubbing my head what it is used RGB or sRGB there but now I think to understand process little more. Will try to use program you recommended later. Right now I am contemplating this issue because I want to know exactly what would be recommended "colors" to use for program if it needs to display something in graphics. I am afraid that if the colors are to close to each other NST will represent those as same and fine details will be lost. True that might be to a point compensated with some kind of bordering/dithering and will work somewhere but it would look ugly as hell elsewhere. Had I work on text program then yes B&W is all I need. Stimulating subject I must admit.

screen comparison between 128gb and 64gb, not the same?

I recently got my 128gb, and returning the 64gb tomorrow, did some comparison on the screen, 128 on the left side.

Light bleeding on the camera at low light condition
Brighter on the 128gb(letft). Stripes are from the camera(glare)
Different display modes?
Takes a few hundred hours for the pixels to settle. In a month they both would probably look similar.

While this may sound crazy! This is normal (that there not exactly the same). While you might be able to keep comparing different S6 until you find a pair that "matches", or have the same screen brightness any random pick won't be the same...there are many factors and as simple as different build dates etc...
On the S6 now and have had every galaxy since the first one and several HTC's before. I always by in pairs (keep the wife upgraded) and have noticed this every single time and not just with the Samsung's. Just how it is.

Alright, thanks
This is 'normal'. I am on my 3rd S6 because the first two had that ugly pink tint to it. My 3rd phone not only has no pink tint, but also a really crisp white display. Compared to the previous phones, they were much more yellow.

I'm on my 3rd as well, no pink but it does have some green at the bottom sadly. It's not too noticeable, and I don't think I want to go through the hassle of getting a 4th replacement. There's a whole thread on it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/getting-replacement-s6-due-to-screen-t3074865
All the AMOLED displays for the S6 are going to have slightly different factory calibration on all profiles. So no two S6 displays are going to be the exact same.
There is no such thing as light bleed on AMOLED screens.

Exactly. Basic knowledge
AMOLED does not have a backlight, it lights up each individual pixel which is why you can have inky blacks, because it simply turns off those pixels, unlike LED screens that use a black image with a light behind it giving off a grayish background.

light sensor is different in the camera (more sensitive or uneven)
I noticed a change in my screen after installing a tmobile update. Originally there was a completely black screen on the lockscreen, but after the update it almost appeared that there was a sort of gradient almost representing a light bleed.

Status bar,battery signal strength etc

Are there any options available to shift the status bar postition periodically? I'm asking because I remember my Note 4 had some image retention where the battery, clock, signal strength was depicted.
I'm thinking the black wallpaper background didn't help my case either and probably increased "screen burn in" likely hood.
I read about immersive mode already.

So dark themes are bad? I've always used dark themes on my phones. I don't like lighter themes, but might have to reconsider, I guess.
My wife's Note 4 had terrible burn in around the status bar, so I know exactly what you're saying, but she didn't use any theme and had a bright picture as her background.

I read from another learned poster on here about image retention and it's worst if you for example have a pitch black background and pure white status icons similar to what I'm currently running on mine. Apparently that's why since Android version 7 I think, the top of the status bar is colored.
Gonna try and find the link.

I didn't go with a completely black theme this time. I'm using the Manner II Samsung theme from the Samsung Theme store. It has a lot of black/dark gray and purple. It's a nice theme. Bright themes annoy me because they show every flaw in screen uniformity and I see them all.
Doesn't AOD do exactly what you're asking with the areas that it displays? It would make perfect sense for them to also do it for the status bar area and any areas that display frequently.
Burn in is the downside of this technology, especially for people who use their phones a lot. Given how most of the flagship products use OLED, you'd think that someone would have come up with a solution for it by now.
