What root method should I use?? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6

Hello everyone. I have a question in regards to rooting my S6. My s6 has version 5.0.2 and the OCG baseband. Should I upgrade to 5.1.1 before I root? I would like to root without tripping the Knox counter. Also, if I were to root without tripping knox, would I have to use this method every time I flash a new rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just update to 5.1.1 and flash unibase kernel, why do you care about knox? it doesnt really matter if you trip it you still have insurance through your carrier, seriously knox is really only there for companies who provide phones to their employees and dont want them to mess with them.

I can understand that, but I would like to keep from tripping my knox counter. Anyways, I just rooted via PingPong successfully. How do I keep from triggering knox now that I am rooted? Can I flash TWRP or any other kind or recovery?? Thanks.

no, if you want to keep from tripping your knox counter you cant really do anyhting. flashing any kind of custom recovery or rom or kernel will trip it, all you can really do is just stay rooted and thats about it

Got ya. Guess I'm tripping knox then. Thanks for your help.

Ping-pong requires no computer, right? And also , is it confirmed working with this tmobile S6? I am on the latest update and have been stalling on root due to having no PC.

Few questions about rooting this device

Mainly Knox Counter stuff.
1. would rooting trip my knox?
2. would installing such apps like Titanium backup/xposed trip my knox?
3.would installing a custom recovery such as CWM/TWRP trip my knox?
If I read it correctly somewhere. As long as I don't install any custom rom/kernel . My Knox Counter will be okay?

Continue reading. It depends what version you have weather you can optain root. You cannot install cwm or twrp. Must use safestrap or flashfire. Use towel root to root the phone if your version is compatible
It's G900A.

Well there only about 5 different stock firmwares that have been released for the G900a. Just cause its a G900a don't mean it can be rooted.

1- It depends of how you root it. If your root does not involve modifying bootloader/recovery/kernel, no. For examples, there are methods where you use towelroot on an older android version, then update the phone with a modifies update file (with no modification to the kernel). That does not trip knox. But if you use something like CF-autoroot that touches your recovery, then yes, you will trip knox.
2- No.
3- Most definitely yes. Any recovery that is not signed by samsung for your phone will trip your knox.

Rooting Questions

Hi Experts,
I am plannign on rooting my SM-G925T butu I have a couple of questions before I continue, I have an out of the box version and not updated yet as far as I know, it is currently on 5.0.2. I see a guide to Root but it is for 5.11.
- Is it better to update my phone first before rooting as the guide I saw for rooting without tripping knox is for 5.11.
Thats all my question for today, I may think of something else later though.
Thanks
You can root 5.1.1 without tripping Knox, but that means your fingerprint scanner will be rendered useless.
Personally, I stayed on 5.0.2, rooted with PingPongRoot and flashed a debloated ROM using FlashFire — all with Knox still intact.
If you want to root without tripping knox and have functioning fingerprint reader, stay on 5.0.2 and root using ping pong as stated by above poster

Thank you both for your response, I would stay with 5.0.2 then.
OK guys I have a question that I am not sure is the right thread but I need to SIM unlock my phone. The only ways currently out needs the phone to be rooted. I have a question of a plan I have and wondering if you guys would know if it works?
I plan to do what you said above and root 5.0.2
Get the phone unlocked.
Then flash the stock rom and get rid of root.
And then upgrade to 5.1.1.
Do you guys happen to know if this will work without messing with my fingerprint reader? Thanks!

It won't, but you may lose the unlock depending what method you use

FYI, this worked completely perfect. Used Ping Pong to root, unlocked and then flashed stock 5.1 and still unlocked
How do I root 5.1.1 DOI1 without tripping knox? I'm aware Samsung pay and fprint scanner are gone but I have a question.....If I decide to unroot and flash back to stock (with knocks untripped, hopefully) is it possible that Samsung pay and fprint scanner should work as a result?

You cannot root 5.1.1 DOI1 without tripping Knox since Samsung updated the bootloader and we don't have an engineering bootloader for it. If you were on 5.1.1 COF6/8, you could still use the engineering bootloader while sacrificing the fingerprint scanner and Samsung Pay. As long as you don't trip Knox or use a custom recovery, you can still use Samsung Pay after flashing back to stock.
So who ever is on 5.1.1 DOI1 non rooted stock(brand new phone) and attempt to flash custom rom ,root phone etc will not be able to revert to stock (like from the box) and will lose SamPay and Fingerprint scanner?
In case we root, we will Tripp Knox and disable Fingerprint scanner?

Can you share what debloated ROM you used? I can't tell how to know if a rom works with FlashFire. I am still on 5.0.2, rooted, but still stock. I would like to try some more roms.

I'm using Looper 2.0. There really aren't that many options for those still on 5.0.2; it seems like the only other one is XtreStoLite. You may have more luck in the Unified Development forums, though I'm not sure if you'll be able to take advantage of T-Mobile specific features (like WiFi calling) on 'universal' ROMs.
I almost forgot to add: it's absolutely essential that you remove the boot.img from any ZIP before flashing or else you'll end up tripping Knox.
I was already looking at XtreStoLite. Do you know if its Aroma installer options work with FlashFire?
Im on this version of 5.1.1. and looking to root. I don't care about knox. I only care about the fingerprint scanner which I am under the impression only gets disabled with that developer bootloader used for not tripping knox. Anyways I flashed a version of TWRP which worked but wouldn't let my phone boot. Itd get stuck on the Samsung screen (not bootloop). I got the recovery is not seandroid enforcing message. I managed to get back to stock after that but Can someone point me into the right direction for which TWRP or CWM I should flash and or kernel after that. I just want to get a rom on this thing. Might as well since ive already tripped Knox.

Can TWRP be flashed without tripping KNOX? (Need TWRP only- not trying to root phone)

I'd like to flash TWRP onto my Note 5, but want to be absolutely sure it will NOT trip the KNOX counter. Is this a possibility at all, or does flashing any custom recovery lead to KNOX being tripped?
I am NOT looking to root the phone - I just need TWRP. (I am fully aware that at the moment, all rooting methods will trip the KNOX counter.)
Thanks!
Tom

It will trip Knox.
Thanks for confirming - that's what I figured as well.
I'm guessing that flashing ANYTHING other than the unmodified stock image would result in Knox being tripped...

Flashing other recoveries, kernels, and modified firmware packages will trip Knox.

How easy to trip knox

Hi guys I had thes8 plus and first thing I did was root and flash custom Rom when it come to selling it to get the note 8 I hated how many apps where still broken from tripping knox
My question is I don't want to trip knox again on my note 8 but how easy is it to trip knox?
Can any apps from app store trip it by mistake or using adb to say go to full immersive mode?
Or a couple off modded apps like YouTube modded?
Thanks

The only thing that will trip knox is flashing a custom recovery - which is required to root.
Don't root and you will be fine.
no apps can trip knox
adb wont either

You can use Odin without tripping Knox, you can flash other Samsung firmware and it won't be tripped just don't Odin a custom recovery.

Kind of you could still flash stock firmware fine if you needed to recover from a soft brick of some sort.
But yeah apart from that just stay away from it

It has the recovery needed to root (trip Knox) and has instructions on how to flash it. Does not get any more straight forward than this.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and knox

Hello, i have question. If i root my phone or flash rom is there any way to get knox and get the phone unrooted, with official firmware? Via odin? Please tell about that, i need to know if i lose knox FOREVER...
Thank you.
Once you have rooted or install a custom OS onto your Samsung Device you will trip Knox and Knox will be disabled on your device.

You can unroot by flashing stock firmware, but you will still lose Knox forever (including secure folder, etc.). Knox can't be untripped.
