I hear the S5 has a locked bootloader on AT&T. Is this rumor valid or a ton of baloney? I dont really want to go through all the safestrap crap again as I did with the S4

I dont believe anyone has the AT&T variant in hand, but if history has taught us anything its that AT&T will have it locked down.
AT&T will 99.99% lock the bootloader on the S5. They stated they will lock the bootloaders: "To ensure a safe and consistent experience on your wireless device, we do not support unlocked bootloaders."
I just wish T-Mobile would improve in my area because they are doings things right. Like selling the 32GB S5.

This time around it looks like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will have S5 with locked bootloader
AT&T started with S4 and continued the tradition there after (G2, N3 etc.)

LokiDoki was bad ass lol. I had kept it on my s4 all the way to the end. Everyone kept saying there would be another exploit, but there never was. The AT&T S4 doesn't see much development nowadays. Safestrap is good, but not the same. Maybe there will be a developer who can actually UNLOCK the bootloader instead of finding a way around it. These devices have become so hard to root, flash, and restore to stock with these locked bootloaders. Glad T-Mobile is getting in for the fun. It's almost sickening how much they publicly hate AT&T and Verizon, then they go and lock the S5 bootloader just like them.

Im guessing T-mobile started because people were buying their devices for use on AT&T because of the unlocked bootloader. They dont make money on the devices they make it on the service and locked bootloaders will discourage this practice. My theory, not fact.

I am sorry but I put 0 credibility behind the "SOURCE" for this statement that TMOBILE will have a locked bootloader - I have not even been able to confirm that the LG is locked - it may be that I am looking at the world thru rose colored glasses but I need to see something more than converstationwith an unknown person who may or may not know what they are talking about. The odds are that the S5 will be unlocked on TMOBILE - as an ATT customer using a TMOBILE NOTE 3 - I sure hope that is the case as I plan to buy the S5 when it comes out - if it is locked, I guess I will return it - but until I see more definitive proof - I don't believe it will be

If you are talking about the excerpt of the chat session the insurance guy posted online - then no, that is not enough to convince me. Do you have something more official from TMOBILE that says it is locked? I would love to see it if you do - I don't know who that person was at TOMOBILE - if it was a customer care person from the web site - I give them no credibility at all - you wouldn't believe the number of things they have said that have turned out to be totally untrue -
or are you talking about some sort of official notice that I have not seen?

Wasn't that T-Mobile's official twitter account? Anyway, I hope it is unlocked because everyone has the right to do what they want with their phone, as they own it. As an AT&T customer who used the T-Mobile Note 3, I can tell you that I will not be doing that again in the future. T-Mobile's Note 3 fully supported all of AT&T's bands, but I found LTE reception to be very bad. It was awful in places with low signal, and often would sit on HSPA+.
But my flashing days are over with. I pay for my devices at full price, and I won't risk bricking it with these very hard rooting/flashing procedures. Its just too risky nowadays. Maybe I got spoiled with the easy rooting/flashing methods we had before.
Back to the bootloader... I can see them locking it for the reason that many bought their device for use on AT&T. If the S5 bootloader is locked on T-Mobile then that's a shame. Looks like the "uncarrier" just made a selfish "carrier" move.

I honestly don't know if that was an Official Tmobile Tweet or not - I guess I do wear rose colored glasses - always half full and all of that. I purchased a preorder of the S 5 so I will find out soon enough - if it is locked I will probably return it.
One reason I can think of that t mobile has decided to lock bootloader (if they have) is to cut down on the amount of returns they get from people who brick their device and then return it for a new replacement, hiding the fact that they were rooted or whatever. We may have become o our own worst enemy. I don't knnow how many hundreds - maybe thouhsands of phones have been returned at one time or another from someone claiming the phone was broken when in reality it was bricked because they tried something they shoulnd't have - or flashed a bad file or whatever. If you consider their side of things - you can understand why they might want to plug that hole....
regardless - I am a flashaholic - it is a disease - I need help desperately - lol - but seriously - I do hope we find that these are just rumours and that Tmobile has taken the high road and kept our phones open and "flashable"

Will they sell develper editions of the S5? Like the S4? I havent seen any for sale yet. I really dont want to shell out $600 for a phone just so i can customize it.. Might as well wait on the Nexus 6:crying: or maybe i will jump ship to the New one m8 google edition (even tho imo its ugly and still costs alot of $$)

The standard AT&T HTC m8 version has been confirmed to have an unlockable bootloader via the htc dev tool if you are concerned about having to buy off contract.
This is why I'm only buying Google edition phones now.

And an S-OFF tool has been released...the phone can now be fully and completely unlocked.

The Nexus has never been locked even on carrier subsidy. But Verizon does things in mysterious ways....

I hope not. I'd like to be able to buy this on carrier subsidy as I'm due for an upgrade and would like to not have to pay full price. Don't plan on moving off AT&T anytime soon, so yeah. But if the device is bootloader locked on subsidy I'll be pretty frustrated.
I'm betting it'll be just like any other subsidized phone. I doubt they'll lock the bootloader but carrier lock I'd bet on.
I'll blow a gasket if AT&T locks it down as I too have been due for a upgrade for years and since ive decided not to jump ship then I might as well get something out of it by buying a subsidized phone.

Locking a Nexus bootloader is sacrilege. I highly doubt that would be the case. Verizon didn't even lock the bootloader on the GNex when they had it. Can't speak for carrier locking though, as after that GNex debacle, I buy my phones off-contract.

Subsidized phones are cheaper. Its why programs like Jump and T-Nobiles 'no contract' pricing is a scam.

Exactly. Same thing with ATT if you buy it unlocked(google play, no contract) then you simply pay $15/month if your on mobile share plan. If you take a two contract(subsidiy) then you pay $40/month. If you do ATT next you pay a lease fee of $30 dollars or so monthly plus the $15. So its more expensive monthly but you can pay the phone off when you want.
So two yr vs unlocked, $40-$15=$25(the difference). So $25/month x 24 months=$600(roughly price of phone.
In short, its the same thing, they always get their money, its just over what period they get it, you still pay. If you have the money buy it from google play, and have a cheaper monthly bill.

Trying to avoid paying $649 all of once, so if I can get the same phone from AT&T while making installments using Next, that would be awesome.
I'm assuming that the carrier phone be the same exact phone as the unlocked one, only difference being carrier lock.
I've owned three nexus phone gnex nexus 4 and 5 not one has been carrier locked

I would like to avoid paying $649 as well by using my AT&T upgrade (no plans to leave so may as well take the discount)...however I won't buy a "compromised" Nexus. Worst case scenario I'll buy a S5, Note 4, or even iPhone 6 on contract and then sell it on eBay to make up for paying the full $649 for the Nexus 6.

But what if it's not comprimised? I mean if you can change it to be exactly like the one you can buy from the Play Store, what really is the difference? Big IFs because we don't know enough right now, but I mean I would be certainly fine with turning into a "Play Store Edition" if I have the ability to do so.

If it's not compromised, then it's a no-brainer for me to buy the cheaper one.
If it's compromised but still possible to change it to be almost exactly like the one from Google, then it's just a question of do I prefer to workaround the compromise or is it simply easier to buy the Google version and then use the contract to buy then sell a flagship phone on eBay to recoup the difference.

True but what difference would it make if I, for example, bought the phone from AT&T at full price to avoid the two year contract and next program? I'll still end up paying the $20 or so a month of the subsidiary cost of a two year contract phone. You still end up paying almost double the price of the phone through AT&T's lovely loyalty customer gets f***ed program. Now let's say you're the financially smart guy that decides to buy the phone elsewhere and just use AT&T's service, you may save $100-150 on the cost of the device(which is a significant savings) BUT you still end up paying that $20 or so a month in subsidiary cost over the life of your service. Either way you look at it, you, the customer gets F****D! ☺

Pay full price for phone up front and buy the smallest package. After 40 days cancel the service. Some stores will sell it out right without a plan, but you will have to do some searching and calling. I had to go to 3 different stores before I found one that would sell it out right.
I read LTE and 4G dont work so well when you take it back to ATT. I read somewhere.

I thought the same thing. This is not the case with the Note 4. It was an issue with the Note 3 and previous devices in my experience.

I bought the phone outright. Paid $30 or so to cellunlocker to get an unlock code. Popped in AT&T sim and off I went. Still need to cancel Tmo service.

I bought my Note 4 outright and purchased the lowest priced package I could. I unlocked it the first day I received it, inserted my sim card from Consumer Cellular and was up and running. However, I read that T-Mobile can and have blacklisted the IMEI of phones that don't comply with their terms of service. Since I didn't read the fine print when I bought the phone and service, I decided it would be prudent to go ahead and meet the 40 service requirement to get an unlock code (although the phone is already unlocked) rather than take a chance and have some T-Mobile manager with a Napoleonic complex blacklist the phone. Then I would be out of $800.00. I asked the customer care representative about blacklisting the phone if I didn't meet the 40 day requirement and she said it was possible. I wasn't willing to take that chance. I will pony up an additional $80.00 + dollars to have peace of mind.

I unlocked with cellunlocker.net 4 days later.
Been using it on AT&T since last friday. Called and canceled tmobile same day.
Easy as that.

Right but you make it sound like every T-Mobile store or reseller will sell you a phone outright with absolutely zero commitment of any kind like you walked in to buy a pack of gum or bought a nexus from google play store. There are conflicting reports about zero commitment purchases. The safer bet seems to be walking in with the understanding that you may have to agree to a month-to-month or prepaid contract that you can cancel a day or more later.
The best way i can think to explain it is as follows:
A few people have reported that they were able to buy it outright without service. Though many have been denied that option.
Some have implied that Tmobile then unlocked it.
A moderately safe assumption is that you can buy it with service, unlock it via third party service, and cancel your tmobile service the second u get your unlock code. This comes with the gray area of region locking and having to activate it on tmobile first to remove the region lock pior to unlocking. This can be a lengthy discussion, you might not care about region locking, I'll leave it at that, but read into it. I went this route, activated on tmobile for 4 days, then unlocked and cancelled. I say assumption because people are worried about blacklisting and T.O.S.
The most cautious method would be to wait out your 40 days per Tmobile T.O.S., in addition to the time it takes for them to send your unlock code, pay applicable fees, then cancel.
Hope this clears up the options a bit.

T-Mobile has the IMEI of phone they sell you in their records. I confirmed it when I called them and they read it to me for confirmation purposes. They sold the phone to you and they know everything about it. Guaranteed. If their records show the phone being used on another carrier without it being activated with them or unlocked by them then they can blacklist the IMEI of the phone. That phone will then be an $800.00 paperweight. They have done it before and a quick Google search will prove it. I'm not saying they will since that seems to be an unknown, but they can and the owner of the phone will have no recourse. I sure don't want to wake up one day and find out that my $800.00 phone is dead. I might very well be wrong, but I am not willing to take that chance after paying $800.00 for the phone. I'll pay for the 40 days of service.
I just bought my Note 4 full price from AT&T after calling about 30 stores in my area and finding one store with one black model in stock. I ended up paying less than full price because of some computer error that rung up the phone $749.99 instead of $825.99. They charged me the difference so I only paid $825 outright, after taxes. All in all, I saved almost $50 (difference in tax from $750 to $825). I still feel like it is ridiculous though that the AT&T model is $80 more expensive than TMo. Is it worth buying a TMO Note 4 with their baseball discount ($30 off) and trying to unlock it to use it on AT&T? Sorry for my long comment/question.
Bought mine from swappa in a sealed pack. Opened the phone, went to Cellunlocker.com and within 10 min had my unlock code. Works great on ATT
So, this thread has 2 purposes.
1) I'm sort of confused as to when AT&T is supposed to get this phone. It just says "Coming soon" on their web site. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem waiting. I just dislike the mystery of it all. Most people are talking about the Nexus 6 release on the Play Store, which seems to be an enigma in and of itself. But how is there no clear indication when it'll be available on AT&T (or Verizon or whatever)? Why even put the web page up if everything is such a mystery?
2) I'd like to use this thread for someone to post (including myself) when they DO see that the Nexus 6 is available for pre-order or just plain order. I keep refreshing the page like a dope (don't worry, it's not manual) and I wonder why I'm even doing it. Is the pre-order page going to magically appear one day? Does anyone have an estimate as to when? Or should I just drop this whole pre-order idea and just go in the store sometime later in November?

T-Mobile is officially not doing a pre-order. I suspect the same is true of all carriers, even if they haven't announced that fact.
The rumor (with some convincing back-up) is that they'll be available to order outright from carriers next week. We'll see if that's true.
At this point I'm starting to think that carriers are not going to do preorders and just sell it when device is in stock. Hopefully around November 12th like we heard with some of the other carriers.
Well I stopped in an AT&T store today just for the heck of it and asked one of the techs there if he knew anything about a possible Nexus 6 availability date. He said he had no clue. 'Just a lot of rumors right now". He said he's been scouring the Internet for more information.

i work at an att store, and i try my best to learn EVERYTHING about the upcoming nexus 6. but we only get official information pretty much the time you guys would, with a few exceptions. nothing so far.
Maybe somebody can enlighten me here. I do not see the point of buying this device through AT&T? I mean unless you want a contract or next. Wouldn't it be smart to buy it completely unlocked via Google Play? Will it be the same version? I know AT&T locks down all of their bootloaders.

its not hard.
contract or next: you decide to stay on att because you are satisfied with their service. you have the option to pay a 199.99 (rumored for subsidized) or 53.62 (sales tax for next) for the device with a plan for some time (2 years). you are content with the phone itself, you do not feel the need to unlock administrator privileges.
unlocked: you like to hackzor the romerino bootloaderino and jump around between carriers for your amusement and 649.99 is chump change to you

Not all bootloaders. M8 is fully unlockable through htc's official website. S-off does require some hackz but it wouldn't even be possible if at&t didn't show us to unlock through an official channel

I am planning on buying mine from ATT on the Next 12 simply because I dont have $650+tax to spend on a new phone right now with Christmas coming up. Also I need to actually use my Next upgrade every 12-13 months to make it worthwhile, otherwise the cost of having Next actually costs the same or more than buying the phone outright or on a 2-year. Whereas if I upgrade every 12 months I only pay $400 for a phone, instead of $600+ for a normal price on an off contract flagship every year. Makes sense to me saving $200 a year. But if ATT locks the bootloader down so that I cant simply do a "Fastboot OEM Unlock" or have an unlock method available right away then I wont be buying the ATT version. Having a locked Nexus would just be heresy.

I have a friend who works at a T -Mobile in MD and she said it will be in stock on the 14th.

I work on Customer Care (Call Center) and pretty much all customer-related info are revealed at the same time that AT&T as company acknowledged publicly, although some of us are trying our best to give actual information (and trying not to speculate like some other AT&T depts have been doing unfortunately and personally I feel ashamed about it), so bear with us that has NO control on information and why AT&T does not give details.
Keep in mind that this is the first time for AT&T for the Nexus brand and probably the prefer delay that screwing up.

I believe that although not a complete privilege as Apple, AT&T might let the exception that Google and Motorola handles all direct updates on the OS side of the device so no worries here.
Bootloaders locked are really common, even the previous Nexus devices did came with bootloader locked and just with proper acknowledgement that you WILL LOSE your warranty, Motorola, nor Google CANNOT deny root access to the device, but might resverse the right to look into your reason on why you are requesting a unlock on the bootloader (ALL THIS assuming all follow HTC's policies on customer registering as developers to request the bootloader unlock).
The other advantages is the AT&T Next in which gives you a economic "relief" until you are ready to pay completely the device or sacrificing two years for have the device under a special price.
watch att encrypting the bootloader to hell and back and loading the system partition with garbage apps nobody wants
I'm patiently waiting to pick it off the playstore(don't want a tainted Nexus) [emoji6]
Like I've said before, I just don't see the point of the "Nexus" if AT&T is going to lock it down. If this is the case then Google might as well abandon the whole concept of a Nexus device. Re-brand it and be done with it.

When I looked at the Next plan last time, I thought I have to pay the whole price of the phone before I can upgrade. So If I buy a phone worth $600 on the Next plan. In 2 years I pay $400. Can I upgrade to new phone without paying rest of $200? Doesn't sound right to me. Can anyone confirm this please?
EDIT: Went to ATT website and looked closely. In 12 months, I can trade in the phone and remaining cost of the phone will be waived off. It does look pretty promising except the locked bootloader part.
All Nexus devices have a locked bootloader. You have to unlock it yourself, which you WILL be able to do with 99.99999999999% certainty.

I'm just tired of looking at the "Coming Soon" status, lol. It would be nice to know when it will be available. Some people are saying the 12th. Others are saying the 14th. Then who knows, it may be towards the end of the month. It's all a mystery and will probably remain one until the phone is actually available for purchase.

This isn't the first time AT&T has had a nexus device for sale.
However I'm curious as to how it will be handled. My main concern is locking down of the phone...which shouldn't be done (it's a nexus after all). AT&T locking down the note 4 is what is keeping me from going from my note 2 directly to the note 4.
Also, they like to gouge us on price. I'm curious what they will charge for it.
I would like to order a Samsung Note 8 from Samsungs website, but unsure whether to order the unlocked version or the T Mobile version. Pros cons? I am on T Mobile USA.

I ordered mine from Samsung.com and my biggest pro was the $425.00 discount for prior Note 7 owners. I also have a S8+ and from what I've heard the unlocked version doesn't have wifi calling but I might be wrong.
No real cons for grabbing the unlocked version other than native video calling will not work on the unlocked version. Promptness of updates from T-Mobile vs Samsung direct is also something to consider. I'm speaking from the point of view of a stock T-Mobile N8 vs an unlocked N8.

I dont qualify for the discount,. The dumb asses as Samsung just emailed saying the Unlocked version aint gonna ship until October, whereas my wifes T Mobile version will be Sept 14. Cocksuckers, maybe I should just order the T mobile version? BTW all in good faith on my side
pros are the discount but you can also buy the tmo variant from Samsung as well. I almost bought an unlocked one from Samsung but I found out if you buy the carrier variant from Samsung, Tmobile can unlock from the day you receive it even if its financed through Samsung. Now I am betting it will be like s7 and s8 to where you can odin/adb the unlocked firmware onto the tmo device to get rid of the carrier bloat.
now the unlocked normally doesn't mean that much to me because I plan on staying with TMO anyway but I really want a Deep sea blue when it becomes available so I need to resell the one o have. I would wait until the blue is released but I cant pass up the note 7 discount. since I can unlock the TMO device on day 1, it will be easier to sell when it comes to that point. I believe all the snap dragon phones are built the same just have different software per carrier. so If my TMO device is sim unlocked, I can flash the stock Verizon firmware and will look/work just like a stock Verizon device(lte bands, apps etc).

If you don't qualify for the discount, and you're going to TMo, and you're getting 2 Notes, forget buying from Samsung, get the BOGO from T-Mobile instead.

Ok, because you didn't qualify for the discount, it's just weird you're willing to pay full price (and lose $900+) and stick with Samsung. For the TMo deal, the downside for that is adding and keeping a line and having to resell the 2nd phone. If you're keeping to lines anyway (you can port one of your numbers to the new line and cancel the current one where it came from) and you wanted 2 phones anyway. The only downside in your case would be paying in full for 2 phones and waiting a few months to get the second phone's refund (prepaid card) to come in.

Ive currently got 4 lines on my simple choice unlimited plan. Two of the lines are "free" when they did the promo last year, I only pay tax on each of the two free lines.
Its my understanding that to get the BOGO Note 8 from tmo , I would need to buy one on EIP and ADD another line for the "free" note 8 to my account?

Yes, that's correct. Is anyone using the "free" extra lines? If no one is, maybe cancel one of them now, add the line for the promo, then cancel it once the prepaid card comes in. If all 4 lines are in use, I'm not sure if what the line limit for Simple Choice, but I believe you can go up to 8. If that's the case, add a fifth line and cancel it once the prepaid card comes in. The downside to this is you might lose the bill credits for one of the free lines, but $10 a month extra is less than $930 for a free Note 8. Since you're buying 2 Notes anyway from Samsung, just get the 2 Notes on EIP with T-mobile and and pay them off in full once you receive the prepaid card (you can pay one off WITH the prepaid card so you don't have to worry about how to spend it), or keep them on EIP if you were planning to finance with Samsung.

The two "free" lines, If I cancel one, then the other will be charged as normal, that was part of their promo terms and conditions. Or I could just cancel both. However, the lines are useful for me , since one is also used in a Tab S2 international version for voice and data. I remember their prepaid card shennagins, it took T mobile about 9 weeks until I got mine when they did that promo to pay off my ATT contract back when I joined tmo a few years ago. I had to pay ATT about 800$ or so, then after 9 weeks I got a mastercard from T Mobile. Luckily I had the cash at the time to pay off the ATT termination fees , else it would have gone into collections. Left a bad taste in my mouth. As did T mobiles last promo, in respect of the two free lines I got. It took them 6 months to fix billing issues, meaning I was charged $40 per each of those 2 free lines for that duration before credits kicked in. Was terrible. Hence I dont trust T Mobile nor their promos anymore.
I currently have my account and bill the way I like it. Hence getting the phones from Samsung and leaving T Mobile and their devices EIP, JOD shennanigans clear LOL

I was just reading that thread on slickdeals, damn got a head ache reading that . I was considering getting an iphone for trade in or a GS5, but aint worth the hassles or risks for me.:silly:

The US (SIM) Unlocked version, is Qualcomm Snapdragon powered.

The bootloader is the same locked one on all the Snapdragon models. Unlocked means carrier SIM unlocked, so you can use it with any SIM card that fits.
I ended up saying screw it and ordering an Exynos version because I hate not being able to customize an expensive piece of property that is entirely mine.

My wife got her note 8 two days ago. I like it but I have a Pixel XL and have all my custom stuff on it. We were both victims of the Note 7 fiasco! She went iPhone 7 I went Pixel. She hates her iPhone so jumped on the note 8... Bouncing all over the house all happy again. They offered us $400.00 off if we turn in a phone like I have a Galaxy 5 I can still keep my pixel and get the note 8 so I might just do it.
