I think that it's just fine when the outcome is good. You can try playing with it's setting to know what to use in low light settings .
Hit thanks if it helps. :fingers-crossed:

I know exactly what youre saying, mine does the same. OSD shows the speckles, as an old TV would or a picture with too-high ISO setting would, but the resulting pictures always turn out great quality without the speckles. Not sure what causes it, but doesnt bother me. I would guess the phone cant handle displaying a live UHD video supplied by the camera directly to the screen while still being able to have a fairly quick shutter speed so its downscaled to a lower display res. I have yet to try 3rd party camera apps, tho.

I was looking through some of the props, and stuff, is there a spot to change video recording length more than 25 mins in HD?
Longer videos please

This is something I could really use too....if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful !
talked with customer support, they are unsure why it records 25 mins. guess its time to dig into code and see what else there is. I did notice that with a different launcher installed, and set as default, the next day when i turn it on, it goes to stock launcher. must be something hard set after a cold boot to pick a defined set of defaults..

Thnask Jason
not a lot has been done in my off time besides work, did play around with more numbers in the sys folder, and a few in the camera apk itself, still always seems to go back to default after a sit overnight.
has anyone tried system/etc and then media_profiles.xml then changing the values and encoder profile quality.. duration then change it from 30 to whatever..
Its just the buffer size!

Ok,
just been on holiday with this camera and used it in battle so to speak.
What I found regarding the 25 mins time limit is that it is just refering to the amount of video it can deal with in one chunk before it has to process it and store it to the card.
If you tap on the stop button rather than just the pause button, the camera then tells to it is processing and storing to the card then, after a brief wait you can once again tapp the video button and you are good to go for another 25 mins.
The only limit I can see is the size of the storage card.
I hope this makes sense and answers your question.
Thank you so much for your kind reply ,
is there anyway any app can do none stop part auto to record like auto split kind of thing do you think ?
Thnx

Got to admit I hadn't thought about that.
Looks like I might have to do some research with that idea in mind.
There must be an app of some kind that could automate the process, hopefully someone out there will have some ideas too.

Sorry that I can't offer a solution (yet) but I am in the process of writing a video recording app, and I have recorded continuously for over an hour, so it isn't a hardware limitation.

Oh man! I would love to see this app and would gladly pay you for it! Do you need any beta testers because I would be totally game for that. I have noticed that the JB+ camera does not put a time limit on recording but I have no way to use the zoom and focus while doing so.
I just got the camera today in sort of a compromise. My wife needed a video recorder but I wanted a good camera for other things but mostly photographing student art work. I was looking at the QX10 and immediately saw the 2 GB recording limit and decided against it. I open up the camcorder today and see a 25 minute limit! AHHHHH!!!!! Anyway, I have unlimited recording but shoddy control using the JB+ camera.
I bought the Galaxy Camera for 328 and am really enjoying it so far, by the way! Great little piece of machinery.

Not really even at a beta stage yet - I am working on it, got the zoom goiing but haven't got the autofocus hooked up properly yet. The JB+ app may be the best hope as of now, but I'll keep you posted.

Glad to see you are still working on it. I wish I can help but programming is not my forte. I found another app that sort of works (not focus) as far as using the controls but recording doesn't finish right so it is broken. The app is Zoom Camera by Moulasoft.
If you need any graphics for the program let me know. That is one area that I can help with.

Everything you'll ever need to know about the camera of the Note4

Guys,
I've started a multi-part article series discussing how the Note4's camera should be used (and how it compares to other high-end phones, cameraphones or even standalone cameras).
The first two parts in the series have already been published:
Part I: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3781966
Part II: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3782300
This series will be of particular interest to Snapdragon 805 users. Exynos users, at the moment, will find the series less interesting, as third-party apps, currently, can't access the (almost) non-processed image stream and they, consequently, can't export non-overprocessed images.
EDIT (2015/01/17): Part III is published on HDR: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3782850
EDIT (2015/01/24): a brand new writeup is here at XDA; you should start with it instead of the previous ones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/shooting-light-best-image-quality-note-4-t3012008
Great. Thank you

Basically, if you have an Exynos device, the stock Camera app unless
- you're absolutely sure you don't need shutter speeds under 1/30s (the restriction of many apps, incl. FV-5) and
- you do need the on-screen controls of that app.
Otherwise, the image quality will be the same so there's no advantage in using any third-party app for shooting, as opposed to the Snapdragon case.
If you have a Snapdragon device, you can get far-far better image quality out of your camera in both still and video shooting mode because of the lack of noise reduction and oversharpening. Then, using third-party apps like Snap camera HDR is preferable, assuming, of course, you don't need features like dual camera.

You can't - the pre-Lollipop API doesn't let for directly setting the shutter speed. The device will automatically use 1/8s when there's little light.
You'll need to make sure you do enable the Photo > “Samsung Camera Mode” checkbox; otherwise, it will NOT be able to go under 1/15s, resulting in a complete loss of no less than 1EV. At least on Snapdragons; I couldn't test this on Exynos devices.

Then, if you really want to see in which cases third-party apps can produce significantly better images, you really want to compare my example shots of the stock app to those of, say, Snap camera HDR - see the crops in my article.
Basically, the stock Camera app applies far too much noise reduction and oversharpening, pretty much ruining fine detail and introducing ugly oversharpening halos. Photos produced by third-party apps, incl. Snap camera HDR, are far more natural.
Just writing my HDR article. The first two parts of the new article is already published: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3782850
Very nice articles. Thanks for doing them.
Is there any way to get rid of the cruddy yellowish look I get on low light photos on my phone? My wife's phone doesn't have this at all, and both of the Note 4s that I have had do. I've been very unimpressed with the low light abilities of this phone, so far. I'd love a solution that doesn't involve sending the phone in to maybe be fixed.

Hi there. It's a nice report! However i do have some input
1. The stock camera does do 1/4s in rare occasions , happens for me when I do shots in not-well lit conditions and yet insufficient for camera to engage in night mode.
2. I have no idea if its just me, but night mode does not downsize my photos to 6mpix no matter how dark the scene is. It still stays at 5312x2998. N910G here. Details of photos on poorly lit scenes do not have significantly worse detail for me as compared to well lit ones and file size is in fact larger by a bit. (the room is still not too dark though).
IMO the stock camera does some sort of multi frame noise averaging technique (similar to canon's and sony's "Hand-held Twilight") to reduce noice.

It'd, then, exhibit a much higher probability of camera shake / stitching errors. The relative noiseless-ness is because of the very-very strong noise reduction. (Or, maybe, because of the "G" model you have is somewhat different from the European one? I wouldn't think so - after all, both are Snapdragon-based.)

I've tried all of the settings in the phone. Nothing makes the problem go away. Using the same settings as my wife's phone, and there's a huge difference in the quality of indoor pictures between the three phones.
It does take quite nice outdoor pictures.

Could you take low-light images with an LCD computer screen displaying white
- without(!) using f.lux or other tools to decrease the white balance (this is equal to about 7000K) and
- at both a very low brightness level (to "kick in" night mode) and a high one (to avoid night mode)
with both phones? Preferably in "auto" and "incandescent" WB modes on both phones.

Unfortunately, I deleted those photos as it was blurry due to the unexpectedly low shutter speeds or that the picture sucked. I will post if I can reproduce that setting again.
As for the noise averaging mode...
1. It will not cause camera shake/stitching errors even if you hold still. Why? If you were to shake your phone violently, the software is smart enough to abandon image stacking altogether & the final image produced is the result of just 1 picture that has a little fine bit of extra noise reduction maybe.
2.Samsung's night mode is not well documented, unfortunately, despite them having this mode since Galaxy SIII.
However, the answer lies hidden in one of their support page for galaxy S4
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/howtoguide/N0000003/10094/120418/SGH-I337ZBMATT
"Night: Take photos by combining them to get a brighter, clearer photo in low light, without flash."
Now, you may think that perhaps this mode only applies to the S4's night mode, so I did a mini test.
(click on photos to zoom in)
(1)
Image taken with night mode
(2)
Image taken WITHOUT night mode under same conditions (This is done by tricking the camera to first take a photo in bright light, continue holding down the shutter button to engage burst shot, quickly direct phone to subject and wait for phone to adjust to the right exposure)
(3)
Same image from (2), but edited in Lightroom by dragging the luminance noise slider to like 40.(there is little or no chroma noise, so I did not touch that slider)
As you can see, despite their photos taken under the same conditions, (1) is the best as it as less noisy compared to (2) and sharper than (3).If Samsung really did engage in strong noise reduction at night mode, much fine detail would be lost and the photo will look like an oil painting when you pixel-peep. Thus , night mode photos you take will look more like (3) than (1), when (1) is the actual night mode photo in reality.
3. Another good guess that Night mode is actually a multi frame mode is that, all night mode's photos have their EXIF data eroded.
(Fun fact, dpreview says iphone 6+ does this too)
"the built-in, stock Camera app may have too strong noise reduction and oversharpening"
IMO, Im sorry but I disagree, too strong noise reduction would mean that photos from the note 4 would be too smooth and would lack any fine detail at all, which from my observations isnt true. Samsung excels in that area. Also, oversharpening is also not the case, oversharpened photos often result in false detail and look contrasty/frosty which is again, not the case to me.
EDIT: oversharpening and noise reduction could be a matter of taste so it could be true for some

Front Camera Video P20 Overexposed / Soft

Hi
Will Huawei fix the overexposed soft image quality of the selfie camera on this phone.
I am still on 8.1.0.103 and wondering if its been fixed in one of the newer updates as it is really disappointing
Not sure they think it's broken, it was obviously designed to do this on purpose. I know a lot of people that use beauty mode. It is rather annoying though as it can't be disabled for those that don't want to be enhanced to Ken doll like proportions lol
If you hit the photo mode rather than the default portrait mode for front camera it does help a bit. Definitely better than portrait mode. I do hope that a future update will add more control over the processing, but I won't bank on it.
I've tried many different camera apps, and the overexposure and softening occur as soon as the camera detects a face. Haven't been able to find a solution yet.

im 99% sure it can be disabled with root - its got to be a setting that detects faces.
we;d need someone to go through the source (if they ever release it)
once i root my p20 ill stalk around to try and find a property.
Sorry, i dont have phone yet. But, if you use some other camera application, will it be the same problem?
Its definitely a setting built into the kernel/source code because using another camera app will not override the setting. It only focuses on the subject (face) and blurs out the background which should not be the case
I have rooted P20 pro, and there is a ton of properties and definitions xml files for different modes and effects in odm/camera folder. For example there is something called "casiobeauty" among others But, to mess with those parameters someone has to have knowledge. So, i guess effects can be modified, if there ever will be someone of knowledge and will to do it
You all may want to install CameraMX from PlayStore.
It gives out high resolution and high qualoty images. Selfies taken by it are noticeably sharper than the p20 pro stock camera. Also, there is a slider to adjust exposure for the front cam (something that is missing from the stock). In addition, the app also supports HDR for the selfie cam as well.
You can give it a try...

For the photos below, the washed out one is taken with the front camera native app. The better one is with cameraMX app.
Note: No editing done, same lighting condition, almost the same hand position, same angle.
It is very evident that the native camera app is washed out/overexposed.
Well, the CameraMX photo isnt perfect but for me, it is 80% better than the stock camera.

Hi, I'm pretty much sure it's a software issue as the original photo can look so much better when you edit it. And, you can also use other camera apps
There is a workaround on the overexposed p20 front camera images using the Google Photos Editor App
(I've read it from another XDA thread).
The results are stunning! It's almost as if the photos were taken using an actual Google Pixel front camera! (In my opinion)
I suppose the image enhancement algorithm for the Google Photos app is similar to the image post-processing of Google Pixel phones.
Note: Google Photos is commonly preinstalled along with Gmail, Hangouts, GMaps.
Step 1 - Snap a selfie using the native app
Step 2 - Preview the photo and click the (...) at the bottom right
Step 3 - Click Advanced Edit ---> Select Google Photos
Step 4 - Select the second icon next to the filters menu.
You will find 3 sliders (Light, Color, and Pop)
Step 5 - Slide Pop all the way up, as well as Color.
You may tweak the settings more for Color and Light too!
(There are more options when you expand it)
Step 6 - Click Save.
Find sample photos below:
Just got a P20 Pro and this is seriously my biggest hate with this phone! The rest is great (except my google pay not working) but the front camera makes me look like a ghost on any image!

10bit HEVC Extreme Black Crush after using Camera App

Somthing I noticed a few times on my Note 9 was that some times my media files would play very dark. Now this would only happen with 10 bit Hevc files.
So I did some trouble shooting and found that whenever I start and exit the camera in "Photo" mode this would happen.
I have put a pic for a 10 bit hevc video paused on the phone, in both instances all settings are the same, the pic titled "No Black Crush" is before using the camera and the other after using the camera and exiting in Photo mode. From the pic we can see that one pic is significantly darker and details are lost (eg. White spots on the sign and some background stuff).
The only way to fix the black crush is to restart the device.
Would really appreciate if some one out there that is using an Exynos version and plays 10bit hevc videos on the phone would help in testing some stuff out.
Edit - Ok so I guess some more info is in order.
Device info - Note 9 Exynos (Model SM-N960F) on latest official build and NON ROOTED
To replicate issue download the video in the link (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QR-5JEWNOFI3nbvbLR_80Z7BgA37Dil_)
1. Restart phone
2. Play the video using stock video player (keeping Video Enhancer on makes noticing the bug easier as screen is brighter, Video Enhancer off should also work)
3. Open stock camera and make sure "Photo" mode is selected and then exit staying in "Photo" mode (switching camera modes wont let the bug show up.)
4. Play the clip again. BOOM everything is a dark mess.
5. Restart phone and play the clip again and everything looks clear again

does changing the the screen mode from adaptive display to amoled cinema or even basic help at all?
if you get inconsistent results then it would seem that is would have something to do with the "auto" nature of the display mode. moreover the ambient lighting in the room you are watching might also be a cause. adaptive brightness might produce different results and might be tied the the screen mode as described above.
so remove auto brightness and put screen mode to Amoled cinema or even basic if you really want to compare apples with apples.

Since I have been seeing this behaviour for some time now I have actually checked to see what was triggering it. Changing the screen mode does not help. Also in the pic I attached the brightness level is the same since adaptive brightness is off.
Now I understand where you are coming from but this is not a screen illumination issue. If I play a H264 file everything works fine no black crush even HEVC files which are not 10bit play correctly, the issue is only with 10bit HEVC files.
Oh and am not sure if you are aware as to what "black crush" is, it basically is the tendency of amoled panels to make dark areas so dark that u loose details in the video. In the pic I uploaded u can clearly see that one pic is significantly darker than the other even though all settings are kept exactly the same even the brightness levels are the same but dark areas appear much too dark when the bug is triggered.

In the pic I uploaded u can clearly see that one pic is significantly darker than the other even though all settings are kept exactly the same even the brightness levels are the same but dark areas appear much too dark when the bug is triggered.

Ok, so you are right. More info definitely needed so I have updated the original post with details on how to replicate the issue and have shared a clip as well that you can download and play using the stock video player.

Below mentioned steps should work to replicate the bug.
Testing to be done on Exynos version.
To replicate issue download the video from the link in the very first post
If you need any more info let me know and thanks for helping out man.

so i forgot before leaving for home to do the test while having access to an other phone taking a picture of both scenarios so that i could analyze both pictures. but by testing it right now doesn't seem to make any difference.( picture seems ok.) but i am using a custom rom and kernel and system is heavily modded so who knows that might have had an impact. also when you do switch from camera to video, do you remove the camera app from memory( remove it from recents? i left it and no change)
for what's it worth im on a july build...
ill try again tomorrow this time taking before and after pictures

Ahh so I should have mentioned. Am on July official build, non rooted (still have 2 months on the warranty). I guess rooting and a modified system would have an impact on the issue but thanks for testing out. Out of curiosity what is your setup? Which custom rom and kernel are u using and what extra addons if any.

Image processing suddenly disappeared from snapchat and instagram

So we all know that image quality of pictures taken from snapchat and/or instagram is generally very bad when compared to stock cam right? Especially for androids. But I was seriously very surprised to see that my note 9 was performing very very good in terms of sc and ig pictures.
Normally in androids, snapchat takes screenshot of the viewfinder, but my sc used to process the image, like the image viewfinder was showing was of bad quality but once i clicked on capture button it processed the image and you couldn't tell the difference if it was taken from stock cam or not. Seriously I was loving it and I was alot surprised.
Just additional info : This significantly better image processing only worked when I wasn't applying any filters,or recording video, or boomerang or anything other than normal pictures.
So now since like last two weeks, I have been noticing that the image processing is gone, in both apps, the images captured are the screenshots of viewfinder.
Now the twist is that its still processing some captures; not all. After experimenting alot I figured out what it is processing now and what is just a screenshot, so if I focus on something then take picture, it only captures the screenshot, and if I open up snapchat and just point to an object and take picture without tapping for focus or anything, it processes the image. Seriously if there's anything I can do bring it back like the way it used to be, that'd be great cos I loved that feature. It was amazingg.

There're are two images in the link, you can see them for reference.
I can't see big differences.

Sheesh that guy must be blind. I managed to fix the snapchat processing issue by installing an older version of the app (11.9.0.51), anything past 11.10 seems to break it.

I really prefer to take the photo using the stock camera app,
and then post the photo to another app.
The stock camera app has too much settings than other apps.
It's just a suggestion.
