hey everybody, i wasnt sure where i should ask this question but here we go.
My dad is looking for a new phone, looking at the moto x or nexus 4 because theyre pretty much the same price and ive always wanted the moto x. I have a nexus 4 now and hes thinking on buying the moto x and swapping it for my nexus 4. would you guys recomend me doing it? im having some doubts and i will list them now
doubts about swapping:
i love the nexus 4 design
i love how the nexus 4 has a android L preview and will get updates quick
i love the choice of roms, kernels and all sorts.
when i had a moto g (as a temp phone) to be able to use hangouts you had to have the text messaging app on as well, which i didnt like in the slightest. also the phone app didnt have the search feature like the nexus does.
Reasons to swap:
i like the smaller bezzles of the moto x
i like the features
i like how its faster
i like how the battery is better
i like how the speaker doesnt flicker like the nexus 4
better camera
better front camera
no snapchat reboots
(smoother?)
how it doesnt heat up and throttle like the nexus
I've searched and searched but nothing really answers my question, they just compare price and stuff but price isnt a problem. What do you guys recommend? Thanks.
If you want to flash lots of things, nexus. If not....moto x.
Easy decision when you decide that.
But N4? Why not N5? Price is comparable to the X.
The Moto X is probably in reality better than the N4 in every way. But a flashing enthusiast will get bored with the X....like I did. Now my wife has it. Also, some X's don't have unlockable bootloader.
My advice is always....want roms and mods...like to tinker...then N5....if not, moto X. Its a great phone!

no i dont like flashing stuff really, i just like something that works. and nexus 5 is about £100 more- but yeah, should i get the moto then??

The devices I own are in my signature. And the Moto X, I'm my opinion, is the most polished device I've used. And best radio signal strength as you expect from Motorola. I'd still have mine....but I like to tinker to much. Lol
My wife had an iPhone 4s. Then an S2. Went back to her 4s. And said she wanted an iPhone 5s. Then she played with my moto x and loved it. I gave it to her and got an N5...to play with. I asked her a month later if she still wanted a 5s.....she said nope. She never wants another iPhone.
She may want the next X tho.

hahaha yeah i think i'd swap then! and nooo hes not really bothered which he has, he likes the nexus- if anything he thinks the nexus is better//the same.. not gonna decline the offer though am i "1 2 3 no swap back" hahaha
A vote for the Moto X. I've bought a handful of phones of the years (HTC, Samsung, LG, Nokia, Moto), a few for myself and more for my family members. The Moto X stands ahead of the others for quality, ruggedness and design.
In fact, just for fun I did T-Mobile's 7-day iPhone 5s test drive last week, and I returned it a day early. I wanted to get back to my Moto X. (And I'm a Mac fanboy, by the way.)
That said, I do miss flashing ROMs the way I did on my HTC Sensation. But I probably get more actual use out of my phone now.

Why Nexus 4? Why you picked that? Where I live Nexus 5 and X are of almost same price (N5 being slightly higher), and in UK the price is almost same if I am not wrong, unless you are in a contract. N4 is quite outdated, old.
Moto X definitely. Chose it over Nexus 5. The reasons have been said already, a lot of times, still repeating, Active display, AMOLED, Ergonomics and Size, Call quality, Speaker phone quality, and of course the performance. While with Nexus you will get the fastest Android out there at the moment because of better hardware, and a bigger display with more resolution, but it's IPS, so it's dull, call quality can never match X's, everyone knows how the speaker is on the N5, no active display, if that matters to you, and last but not the least an extremely fragile device.
If there were a phone at X's size, with S5's display, Z2/1020's camera and G3's hardware then I would probably let myself switch off from browsing mobile related websites for six months.
So I have a moto x right now and just loved the active display function. Very good battery life and smoother. Just my opinion.
I've had a N4 before and there's no comparison when pitted against the Moto X. Almost everything about the X is better than the N4 and N5.

I wouldn't say the X is better than the N5, just bought a N5 after having my moto x for almost a year, the major difference is development for N5 kicks azz while the moto x development just sucks. Both phones have there advantages and disadvantages, yes moto did a good job on the firmware side but for those who run custom Roms and the such the N5 rocks. Sorry moto ,nexus devices are always going to be in my pocket from this day forward
Moto X to a Nexus 5
I'm looking for an unlocked stock Android experience and willing to pay for it, but not pay more than I have to. In an ideal world I would wait for the new Nexus, but I have to change phones in October, so I am starting some research and would like advice. I am going to put the phone on T-mobile for now, but could change to an ATT MVO if I have issues. Phone needs to be able to take a local SIM in europe/asia when I travel. I see 3 options:
1) New Moto X Pure (32 GB, would go for 64 if offered soon)
2) HTC M8 GPE
3) Nexus 5
I have a Moto G on my secondary line and like it, I like the Moto Maker options. Had the X come out with a micro SD slot and Qi charging I would have ordered it yesterday. I just read the AnandTech review, and it got me second-guessing the new X.
The M8 appears to be the best phone of the group, but is a bit larger and more expensive. I don't see it as much better than the new X for the extra $.
Nexus, probably the safe bet. It appears good enough, but not the best at anything. Best price. Certainly due for replacement... if I had another month to wait I would wait to see if its replacement is right around the corner.
Can you guys help me out. I know I came to a board stacked for the Moto X, but that is where I am leaning anyway. Any thoughts, experience, advice? Thanks in advance.
Nexus 5 is the best Imo (and im a moto fan).
I'm extremely happy with my M8...and I had the X and N5.
And watch AT&T... They like to not let you unlock your devices. I'm sure the new X is no different. ?

As an owner of all 3 (Current Moto X now, New Moto X ordered, had an M8 and a couple N5's) my vote goes to the 2014 Moto X Pure.
Reasons are quite simple for me. The Nexus 5 did not impress me. Not a fan of the screen colors or the feel of the device. Overall the device just felt lackluster. The HTC One M8 is beautiful, but the phone is just too tall and the power button on the top if inconvenient to say the least.
More importantly, the Motorola experience is just better. ActiveDisplay is so handy, its not a feature I really want to be without at this point. The shape of the Moto X suits me better, and the customization is just a great added bonus so that my phone doesn't have to look like everyone elses.

I think I have ruled out the M8, a little on size, but mostly because of the higher price. Funny, I probably would have paid the extra back when HTC was supporting a pro tour team, just to support the racing.
I like the Moto the best, but I'm just not sure it offers $150 more in value than a Nexus 5. Keep the discussion coming, every comment has been helpful.
I won't be touching an AT&T device, either nexus, pure, or GPE only for me.
My advice will be quite simple, wait for the Nexus 6.
I will NOT recommend the new Moto X, not at all. I am sad, disappointed and shocked with that phone. Sad because of it's utterly meaningless bumped up size, disappointed that even Motorola couldn't keep their forte to maintain that beautiful compactness of X 2013, and shocked because of that camera!
I personally am looking for a phone too. Won't get the M8 as it's aluminium, and of course for it's stupid camera. I like the E8, but where the heck is the development for that? Z3 Compact? Nah, 4.6", don't think I will go down with screen size, also unsure and doubtful about all glass build. Looks like the Galaxy Alpha might be a good choice, oh wait, it runs on TouchWiz. So I will wait for the Nexus 6 too, if it disappoints me, well, I will have no other option than going back to TouchWiz.
By the way, I think I can say that the new Moto X is worth of extra 150 USD than a Nexus 5. Why? Because of better build, better antenna and I still will pick Motorola's AMOLED over Nexus's washed out LCD IPS, and obviously Moto Display, Voice and all of them are there.
But is the Moto X 2014 worth of the asking price of 499 USD? Absolutely not.

So I'm due for a phone. Currently using the HTC DNA on Verizon.
I was all about the Moto X(2014) until I heard about the Droid Turbo, which looks pretty sweet.
These are my concerns:
Moto X will probably have a larger Dev community, as the turbo is a Verizon exclusive.
The Turbo will probably have a lot more bloat than the Moto X.
The Moto X boasts a 'Pure' android experience, and while nothing has been speculated software wise on the turbo, it will likely be similar, but with a **** ton of Verizon bull****.
Does the higher resolution screen, extra gig of ram and faster processor worth it?
What are your suggestions?

There will be no difference on bloat. The turbo may have extra droid stuff (like circle widgets and that zap thing) but moto X on vzw still comes with vzw bloat (this is based on my 2013 X having vzw bloat)
The new X has 8 Verizon apps. I have disabled 5 of them. Verizon Voicemail can not be disabled. I use the hotspot app and the Verizon mobile app to check data usage.
I'd add another phone into the mix, supposed rumors detail the Nexus 6 is coming to Verizon.

If you are sticking with Verizon, then the Droid. better specs, better screen, better battery. But going back to carrier lock and carrier bloat is not something I am willing to do after leaving Sprint last year. I'll be activating an X or Nexus on either T-mo or Cricket soon. Can always walk away if I'm not happy.
I bet the screen brightness will push many to the Turbo. More juice to allow a brighter display. So it was with the X/Maxx dilemma.

I went with the X because I don't like the droid branding or the fact that it has capacitive navigation buttons, like the galaxy phones still cling to.
The one benefit of capacitive is that they can't burn in at least. I got the new moto x and love it. Might still get the Note 4 instead though. I'd rather have a 16 mp camera on Samsung then a 21 with bad software. That's the only ring Motorola can't get to be great. Camera software.
Ah man, I'm on day 13 of moto x 2014 and now news of droid turbo leaks. Better battery, hopefully more storage and same software features. Thinking about returning moto x to wait for turbo.

Returning my moto x. I love it, but the entire package is way better on the turbo. It seems exactly like a 5 inch version of the nexus 6. I even set up an exchange for a different moto x yesterday and I contact moto today to get my money back.
Droid life is reporting that the battery code listed on the Turbo benchmark sheet relates to a 3,900mAh battery spotted in China.
Not too shabby.

Yeah, function over form, but who can feel performance difference over any flagship device out this month? I have an iPhone 6, moto x, M8 and they all perform the same. The only draw back I have is the camera on the x sucks, like really really bad and no good cases for the x. Otherwise, I like the near pure android experience of the x over sense and iOS. And the x just looks so much better than the other 2
The only reasoning I have to keep my moto x is that it's the pure edition so it will most certainly get updates quicker than the droid and it's rocking and unlocked bootloader

Yes, the Turbo ill most assuredly have a locked bootloader, be almost impossible to Root, and probably never see anything past Android L.

The nexus 6 was just announced and it looks to be a beast. Why was the reason you pulled the trigger on the moto x instead of waiting for the nexus 6 ? My reason is I knew it was going to be expensive... Second off all 5.9 is too big. I understand the 805 chip is better, but the 801 is really not that far off ? Do you regret buying your moto x ? I would like to know every ones opinion
I went with Moto X because I wasn't sure whether the Nexus 6 was going to be 5.2" or 5.9". I figured that with the delivery and the return period that I could check out the Moto X and return it if the Nexus 6 was a 5.2" phone. I love everything about the Nexus 6, except the size. I'll be keeping the Moto X. 5.2" is almost too big, 5.9" as your only offering is just completely stupid imo. I understand that there are some people out there think that bigger is better, but I'm willing to bet that a majority aren't interested in a phone that large. Polls have shown this.
1) size - 5.9 is outside of my consideration
2) personalization - loving my teak back
Though I do wish moto would've added Qi charging to the X.

You just nailed it! If the new nexus was 5.2", it would be competing directly with the Moto X. You chose the option best for you, and for that, you are a good cat!

Seriously, Motorola has 3 new devices. They only needed one.
Moto X design language and customization. Droid Turbo hardware including screen size and resolution, Nexus 6 pure android support and the 65 GB memory size availability. Put those elements of the phones together and the single device would be better than any one of the three.
Size, phablets are a blight on society :laugh: If the Nexus 6 were <5.2 I would've considered it, although it would be tough to give up my leather back
And the fact that, while Android L will add most of these, I find that the moto additions to stock android to be extremely value add.
Size is the true factor. In hind sight I would have likely gone with the turbo.

Once I started reading that the Nexus would be designed based of the X, I figured why wait and also the bamboo back is just awesome.
You do lose quick Android updates, but to be honest, this thing stock is just as good as any phone I've ever used.
I've been spoiled by CM ever since I've had an Android device, but couldn't be happier with my choice to get the Moto X.
I went with the X for the size and close to stock Android feel. That nexus 6 is just too damn big.
5.9 too much, too expensive compared to the X, dont need all that battery, too much screen on QHD
The X is all i need, enough battery and moto maker.
And yes the 805 and the 801 are pretty much the same
I went with the Moto X since I needed a new phone. With today's announcement, I'm glad I bought it. The N6, being 5.96 inches in screen size is so darn big. The price is too high. For 64gb, I would be spending probably $700. I could get a financing plan through T-Mobile but still, that's expensive. Being a tech geek though, it's still tempting
The thing n6 has is the better camera sensor, imx214. Moto X has imx115 or whatever (older). N6 has OIS also. Also, the fact n6 has a 64gb option is good. Let's not forget lte band 12
I'll wait until 64bit chips and 4gb ram phones are out. QHD will probably be the standard next year

For us crackflashers/hackers/wannabe Developers it is a bummer since the Moto X is not unlockable and rootable (atleast not yet). However Motorola was smart not to make a phone that would compete directly with the one they just created....with better specs.

You could even say that theres the Moto X 2013 for someone looking for a cheaper, smaller and still very very good flagship phone.
So you have the Moto E & Moto G for budget/entry devices, the X 2013 for cheaper and smaller flagship, the X 2014 for the new flagship device and the Nexus 6 for a phablet
After all every Motorola phone its pretty much a Nexus device
For those who want woodback for their Nexus 6, ToastMade will eventually release a woodback for it, so no worry there.
I actually was looking forward to buying the Nexus 6 as backup device for my Moto X, to use as a tablet and backup phone. At $649 I would get it as my primary device, which I will not since it's too large, but not as a backup device. So I bought a used Nexus 7 for ablet instead.
For back up phone, I think I will just get the Sprint Moto X 2013 and GSM unlock it, or a Nexus 5.
6 inch screen is way too big. Super happy with my moto x and leather back and green accents. As everyone else said, I will miss the unlocked boot loader and all that but I can live without it. Stock moto x is a great phone.

The design of the Moto X just really appeals to me more than the Nexus 6 did, from what I could tell of the many leaks and teasers. There's something wonderfully different about having a high-tech phone with a visibly wooden back. The Nexus 6 is just another plastic device. As soon as I found out the Nexus was going to be closer to phablet size I knew it wasn't for me. Moto X is a great size for me.

Previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy S 3 International, originally decided to wait to see what the next Nexus was all about.
Saw that it was a phone for whales, bought Moto X.

Just wanted your advice on what phone I should get next. I Love my moto x Dev ed, its the best phone I ever had but its time for an upgrade.
One of the things I loved about it most is the size. Although the new moto x improved on a lot of stuff I don't like how much bigger it is. Its really hard to find a good/better phone in the same size range. Any suggestions? Anyone who upgraded to something else?
I know the main to contenders are galaxy alpha and sony xperia z3c. However, with the samsung I don't want to deal with touchwiz.. (although i suppose I could root and put cm or a custom rom?) . I really like the z3c and it has great reviews BUT the forums have a lot of people complaining about the glass back spontaneously cracking. Also hearing about sony leaving the smartphone market has me worries about future support and updates.
With either of these and others I will also miss the moto x features like active display and moto voice.. Not to mention, I've had a great experience with motorola customer service and warranty replacements/RMA and I'm not confident about getting the same from sony if the glass cracks or something happens.
Which leans me back toward moto.. but I don't want to go bigger. I was also considering the saygus V2. But don't know about their support, updates, and real hands on use reviews..Not to mention its not cheap haha.
So you see my dilemna? I think I might just have to compromise and go with the new moto x and just get used to the size. Thoughts?
I am in the exact same predicament. I bought the 2014 moto x and returned it due to size.
The z3c looks like a good small phone but the glass reminds me of the nexus 4 and it will scratch without a case. Plus Sony may exit the smartphone industry. Updates are going to be slow as well.
The other ones are stripped down versions of there flag ships.
The iPhone 6 is not too much bigger and feels good in the hand but iOS is too limited for my taste.
The nexus 5 is not that much bigger but certainly not as nice feeling as the moto x
Really the smaller phones are going away. So if you are going to increase in size I would go with the 2014 moto x

Thanks! I had a nexus 4 and it was fine but I did keep it in a case. I guess I'd have to do the same for the z3c.. it looks pretty sleek so I would've like to rock it without a case. Still want it even with all the complaints of bad experiences.
And yeah, definitely not switching to iOS. I can consider nexus 5 I suppose. Its sad how limited the smaller options are. I'll probably end up going with 2014 moto x..

motorola should keep't the size of moto x and just upgrade hardware inside. like iphone 4/4s 5/5s.
that is the big problem of android. you see every new phone different design. even it is great design, they upgrade it with ****.
why i love my moto x and dont want upgrade?
- every possible rom is available, i cant use android without root
- good build quality, after 1 year of use, no scratches on screen (never used any screen protection or case)
- battery is enough for me for all possible scenarios.
- 2 port usb charger
- clean system as possible (even though I am a big fan of htc sense)
- never had any problem openin a webpage (yes that is another reason why people buy smartphones )
- speaker and audio codec quality
- useful functions without any gimmick
and size, use it without dropping it. yes this is a good feel
i'm watching new smartphones but none of them exciting me (Z3 Compact, Galaxy Alpha, X 2014)

I too am starting to look for a replacement for my XT1060. I love it, but will need something new soon. I was very hopeful for the Nexus 6, but it absolutely too big. The Moto X 2014 looks nice but after getting a Moto Maker 2013 edition and using the Chinese Middleman to unlock the bootloader, and Verizon not offering the Pure edition, it's a no go. Droid Turbo was nice in hand, but it has little hope of rooting or bootloader unlocks (seems to be little demand), and it didn't seem as smooth as the Nexus 6 that my GF has. I held an HTC One M8 the other day and some of the developments for the M9 look nice, but I've never had an HTC device. I would need to be able to root/unlock and get as close to pure Android like the Moto X as possible. It is bigger than the Moto X 2013, but not as big as the Nexus 6.
I have a Nexus 7 2013, so I don't really need a big phone. I've used my GF's N6 a few times and it is just awkward as a phone. Too big for one hand and almost too small for two. Part of it is probably me forcing myself to dislike it so I don't cave and just go buy one.

Here's a page that shows the size difference between the phones you mentioned. The 2013 X is much smaller than everything else you mentioned, the 2014 is biggest.
I'm getting a free upgrade/replacement to moto x 2014 under warranty from motorola. I'm deciding if I should just keep it since they're giving me it, or sell it and get something else. Maybe I'll just buy a 2013 dev ed again. I really had no complaints about it.. It wasn't slow or laggy or anything really.. or a nexus 5.. hmm.

Thanks, I was actually looking at size comparisons earlier. The z3c is actually the same or even barely smaller than 2013 x actually. and alpha is close as well. I might just take the plunge for the xperia z3c and be careful with it...
I'd buy a Galaxy Alpha if verizon had it. Actually verizon has no new phones that are as small as the 1st Gen moto X, since they also didn't get the Xperia Z3 compact.
Samsung is not my favorite, but I'm really hoping someone this year addresses this with a smaller phone with excellent build quality and some updated specs - preferably either Motorola or HTC. Although, I guess I can survive with my 1st Gen moto X for another year. Once Lollipop rolls out for moto x 1st gen maybe I won't care as much =)
I keep hoping that Moto will add something that's between 4.7" and 5" to the lineup that still has Active Display and Moto Voice. Doesn't have to have Moto Maker, doesn't have to have top of the line specs (slightly better than the Moto X 2013 would be good). An HD screen would be nice. Obviously AMOLED is a requirement to do the active display. Heck, I'd even take no LTE. Price point between the Moto X and the Moto G would be fine.
I doubt this would happen as the phone would compete directly with the Moto G 2014, but I can hope.
Since none of the current small handset options seem worthwhile, I'm thinking I may just stick with the moto x 2013 for now and wait to see what comes out in the next few months. Hopefully we'll have a good alternative soon. In the mean time this should hold out. And I agree, won't feel the need as much once we get lollipop.

I'm sticking with my Moto X, although the Nexus 6 gets more and more tempting. I find myself missing my Note 2 for its screen size, but not much else.

Thanks! When the new one first came out there was also a huge thread with many people disappointed by the larger size. I highly doubt they would go backwards/smaller now though..
I love this phone but I too am itching to move on. I have told myself I'm only buying a phone that launches with lollipop ? so far I haven't seen anything.
I went from nexus 4 to 2014 X to Sony z3 compact to finally 2013 X.... I made the best choice I think!

Wait really? You moved backwards, in a sense? For size/comfort or what? What made you give up the z3c?
I went from nexus 4 to 2013 x. And I'm worried about the future, 2013 x is good for now but we'll probably need something else within this year..

Yeah a bit of a step back but the 2014 X was way too big, the z3c was nice but screen sensitivity was too high, it would register these Phantom tap or slides. Drove me nuts. The charging part also sucked with the little cover. I had the magnetic charger but darn thing never stayed on properly if I touched phone at all. 4.7 screens are sweet spot. I do hope someone comes out with a suitable replacement but in meantime the 2013 X is best out there for me.
Personally I hate the route phone manufacturers are taking with 5+ inch screens. Soon the word mobile will lose it's defined meaning. It's OK if you have a carry bag but if you use your pocket it becomes uncomfortable nor practical or "bonner" like lol.
Moto X 2013 has a 4.7 screen and the smallest body of any other phone with same screen size. A winning combination! Whoever takes the same approach next will get my cash until then Moto X will be the only phone I will use. Anything above 5.2 is just dumb and calling it a mobile is an insult imo.
My thoughts exactly. I can't stand the direction phone manufacturers are moving in. I'm holding on tightly to this phone until another small phone comes out with good specs.
