Ubuntu for Tablets for Nexus 7 [Official Dev Preview]

It's not the desktop Ubuntu I'm talking about, but Ubuntu for tablets which got unveiled a few days ago just got released on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10! Along with it Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 got Ubuntu for Phone preview today.

Flash grouper zips from TWRP to install, flashing ubuntu recovery can be skipped.
Like every dev preview, this also has got some bugs-
Runs in portrait mode by default. (no side stage)
Camera, video decoding and audio output do not function.
Greeter screen is misaligned.
No multi-user login.
Can't install this right now as I don't have a Linux machine nearby, will update soon if I get a machine and time! If you install it, please do post here!

It's copying the zip file to the root of the sdcard. I'm following the instruction on this page to the letter and so it is actually hiding everything behind a little program/script called phablet-flash.

i think he has a valid point - 13.04 is significantly peppier than 12.10.

I'm guessing 12.10 is more stable. Newer isn't always necessarily better.

risking a dumb question here, but can the touch preview be installed on Tilapia? it says Grouper, but then it says Nakasi OR Nakasig, should you want to restore Android. but there are no images for Tilapia, only Grouper. I know 3G probably wouldn't work, and that's fine..

EDIT nvm there we go

When it says that the Nexus 7 defaults to portrait mode, does it mean that that is all that is available? Or can it be changed to landscape? The main reason I want this is to try out sidestage.

Has anyone tried this out on the 3G version yet?

Fixes for CM10.2 port

This should be a reply to the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418318, but as I'm a new user, I can't yet post to development-related forums apparently, so I'll post it here instead:
I've tried building CM10.2 with the device tree @ https://github.com/codexblack/golfu, but the build failed when trying to build the wpa_supplicant parts, this fixes it (I also needed to add https://github.com/drmarble/android_hardware_atheros_wlan/tree/cm-10.2 to my local manifest):

Indeed, I recommend folks clone this:

It's merged into CAF and allows future CAF merges without any issues. I updated it just the other day. Very clean kernel from ZTE, I've been really impressed.
From my stock-6.0 branch you can just run ./build.sh to compile a Image.gz and ./dtbgen.sh is automatically run after build to create a dtb.img.
I dont recommend using Image.gz-dtb as dtb building was not correctly set up by ZTE and I haven't bothered fixing it. Separated dtb.img works great though.

Otherwise you can use opensource-caf branch which is pure ZTE with no build modifications or scripts from me.
As for flashing kernels you build, check out LazyFlasher installer at:

It will dynamically replace kernel image and dtb, and has a folder to put patch shell scripts. dm verity and forced encryption disabling already included as an example. Supports LZ4, Gzip, Bzip2, and LZO so far. Readme has more info. Avoids the need to constantly update ramdisks, and other branches have examples of things like SuperSU policy mod.

So...now we have two competing TWRP/device tree setups. @jcadduono and @Unjustified Dev it might make sense to keep them similar as make sure there aren't competing versions running around and making support harder.

Well first of all you need the cellphone but it is heavily back-ordered, you can pre-order it now and you might or might not get it on 09/09/16.
I pre-ordered a month ago so I'll get my Gray Axon 7 on monday 08/22/16 (already have the tracking number), I would be willing to sacrifice it (selling it to you) if you want it, for the full price of course ($400 plus shipping). No means to sell anything, I'm not here to sell phones BUT if it is for a developer I'll do it and sacrifice a couple more weeks of wait time. All for the team.

It would be great to have a master dev on porting ROMs and lp him with the process. Otherwise are there any devs interested on porting CM to this phone?

I wish I had the time and skilz. I can build roms and tweak stuff, but that's it. I know the processes but time and knowledge are not on a 44 year old father of two's side. Tree development is best left to the young and knowledgable.

I just ordered one yesterday and it will arrive 8/25, but seems that they are already out of stock by now... 1 to 2 months is the status now

Yup looks like but for vulkan api only. I don't it'll be much problem with that. As u can see aosp 7 builds are already up for nexus5 , one plus one and few other devices which are 800 or 801 .

Can't wait for CM14, although qualcomm won't release new drivers for gpu. So I do not know, if it is worth to wait.. But our devs are geniuses, maybe the current driver packages will work, too.. But at first, I have to root my phone, what I don't like to do, because 0x1 is bad with warranty till January.. hmmmmmm... But Paranoid Android, CM14, ...

it is possible to update drivers for gpu if you have an unlocked bootloader and are on mm aosp rom

Ill take a stab at this. Installing ubuntu on my laptop now, any of you guys think its a good idea to follow this tutorial that was made for AOSP MM? Would the steps be the same? https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Build_for_klte

Alright, got ubuntu installed (windows partition had a heart attack afterwards lmao) so now Ill do my best to follow that guide and see what happens i guess... Should build pretty fast since this machine has a i7 3770 and 16gb of ram and it seems the guide says 8gb of ram is fine.

Alright guys, i got to the part where I have to sync the repo, so i pasted the link in the cm device tree github page that is in the "clone or download" dropdown (ends with .git) and i get this error in the screenshot... got any ideas?

This is a git thing. Basically the branch name has changed. It's now in the staging branch so:
-b staging/cm-14.0

Hey guys just for us kind information we can hope cm14 aswell as ROMs based on it. Look this post by aicp developer/contributor . he has booting aicp n dev build. The awesome thing yo notice in this post is network indicators. Looks like ril is working also I think its usable too. But we have to wait a lil more to get public build.

We want to try that build, beta, alpha or wathever it is. We just want to try it, feel nougat in our hands, we want a download link for that build, even if it isn't stable, daily usable and public. We want that, we must have that.

Linux on DeX

The private beta for the Linux on Beta just opened.
Started this thread so we could post about the app in one thread.

I got the email to download the app and then it sent me to the Play Store where it said the app was not available probably because I wasn't given access to it. I don't know if they prematurely sent out the download notices.

The link I got sent me to the beta registration page online so I could become a beta tester then it linked to the play store.
I've attached the APK, not sure if it will work unless you're part of the beta but it's worth a try.

Yep , I had to disable DeX Labs and DeX developer mode. Dunno if disabling either of them would have been enough.

So it is indeed a container. Pid 1 is a bash shell. Graphics is done via VNC, so slow and unaccelerated. I guess that's the reason Unity was disabled and it boots to "classic" Gnome (with gnome-panel). Audio appears to work out of the box.
The image appears to be a bit dirty... there's plenty of orphaned packages, changes to /etc not reflected anywhere else, unpackaged files, and a strange "lod_daemon" whose purpose I couldn't guess. But I assume loading up other distros is not entirely out of the question.

Any luck getting the custom Ubuntu package to download. Mine either goes super slowly or quits before it even gets halfway

I had everything disabled, but the DeX developer mode. I totally forgot about that option, anyway turning that off fixed it. You have my thanks.
For what I needed (Visual studio code and dev tools in chrome/chromium) this container will do just fine, but it is really slugish and I mean it. Without GPU acceleration it feels like a computers from a couple of decades ago. I think that people will be disappointed, because they expect to do everyday stuff with Linux on DeX and it just not gonna happen. But personally very happy to have the option.

Did anyone figure out what password for dextop is? I never set one and it asking for it when I try to install a package through the terminal

When it downloads the container image, is it an installer ISO? Meaning would we be able to install a different OS in the container?

It's an ext4 image, and no; no different OSes. This is just a Linux container, there is no virtual machine involved. (Nor emulation). So you could do other Linux distros, but no other OSes.

Is it possible to use KVM on this container? How about removing SELinux and compiling Kernel with KVM support? (The Exynos 8890 platform natively supports KVM)

KVM is amazing on GNU/Linux

When I open the app I just get a message to "Update your software" "Linux on DeX requires your device to have the latest software to support some features."
Sure would be nice if it mentioned which software it wants updated. Anybody else getting this?

Has anyone tried this with a keyboard and mouse or HP Elite X3 lapdock? For some reason my backspace keys not working properly and only responds after multiple presses.

I'm on pie and I keep getting this message. Not sure what I'm doing wrong? Also, it keeps telling me to put the image in "/Internal Storage/LoD/" but whenever I do, it then tells me that I can't already have an LoD folder, so either way I get some sort of an error.

For what I needed (Visual studio code and dev tools in chrome/chromium) this container will do just fine, but it is really slugish and I mean it. Without GPU acceleration it feels like a computers from a couple of decades ago. I think that people will be disappointed, because they expect to do everyday stuff with Linux on DeX and it just not gonna happen. But personally very happy to have the option.

I really like the option, but without GPU acceleration it's kind difficult for me.
I use my Note 9 as my main computer and I really like to have Linux. Its amazing to have the ''real'' chrome with the extensions...but its reaaaally slow.
Hope samsung can ''fix'' that.
Edit: but at the same time, its amazing have linux inside my phone...
dex still running even when I'm on linux. I can minimize and go back to Dex any time.
