Comparison of ROMs and features - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Whilst I am so glad to see a lot more ROMs (particularly Lollipop) being released here for the S3 Lte - I am often at a loss to know which ROM does what - e.g. what features each ROM has. I am not a very frequent flasher (sounded pretty nasty) and would appreciate it if any of you guys and girls who test and try out the latest ROMs could give their opinions on ROMs - I know this is a big ask.
All I really know at the moment is that Slim Rom lollipop is a light ROM with a lot of the bloat gone.
Thanks in advance.

The short answer is try them. Read the last 5-10 pages of the thread to get an idea of what people are having issues with and the first few posts for features and screenshots. IMHO lollipop is still buggy and not really suitable for a daily driver, although it depends on whether you want a rom long term or flash new ones regularly, and which features you need.
As far as "bloat", it's probably easier to think of roms(especially AOSP vs touchwiz) on a scale of slim/speed -> features. But again, depends on what features you consider bloat.

[Q]Which ROM do you reccomend?

At the moment I am using a stock 2.3.3 ROM on my SGS.
I wanted to ask if custom ROMs bring anything special to the table.
I remember using Cyanogen on an old HTC Magic. I liked it but the GPS didn't work, the camera couldn't zoom and the alarm didn't work either.
Can someone recommend me a ROM with decent battery usage, a GPS that works and without too many bugs? Thanks in advance
I would like to ask the same thing.
I was using GingerReal since the last months but in i9000 the development has stopped so I am looking for a rom:
- Very stable (the most important things because I hate software crashes).
- Kernel customizable by the user (I prefer semaphore and dark core).
- With a good development and constant new versions.
Could anyone help me, recommending us a rom?

i've tried various roms incl goatrip, gingereal, simply honey, surface, darkky etc but i've found simply honey to be the smoothest in my experience..
and when it comes to kernel choose galaxian or talon both very good...
The last CM7.1 nightly #70 is very stable and have a really good power management.
ive heard wonderful things about simply honey, although i have never used it lol, I do however like the look of the new sgs2 rom (unsure of its name, its in development section) it looks really nice and reports of it being super fast and stable....
however... all that aside, I am a MIUI user, and i would HIGHLY recommend trying it, especially if you are willing to flash anyway, The features are incredible, the customisation is epic, and the speed and the overall look is plain awesome.
Battery life has dramatically improved, some users get 3 days on a single charge, everything works as it should, and GPS (for me) has never been better...
Before you decide, just have a look at the various MIUI threads, Look at some screenshots and some videos, read peoples comments, I have never looked elsewhere since i switched to MIUI 4+ months ago....

[Q] Really confused...

As to which ROM to get?
So many new developers with new ROMs which is great but how do I choose which is best for me?
I'm currently on GingerReal 8.0 and it's quite slow in comparison to my other recently flashed ROMs but it's OK for now.
What I want is an overall nice ROM; speed, looks and battery life are all as important as each other for me.
What is your favourite ROM and why is it better than the others?
Thanks for your help guys
This thread is going to start a flame war !
there is no better / worse ROMs out there, they are all unique in their own little way..
The only advice i can give you (and im sure many others will agree) Is you search the development section carefully. Pick out a few ROMs you like the sound of, Flash them on your device, and have a little play...
Read the comments, see what people are saying about it, Weigh up the pro's and con's.. And make your decision based upon your results..
There are LOTS of ROMs out there, it would take a lifetime (over exaggerating) to try them all.. So its important you find a ROM that meets your expectations.
Hope this helps good luck

its the only way mate, if i was to tell you "choose MIUI its the best", Then a darky user will come over and say "No its not, darky's is the best"
And then a simply honey user says, "no mines the best"..... the list goes on, Before you know it we are all arguing like little kids...
it gets us no where... !
Have fun
It's hard to hold one rom over another. Each offer features which some want and others don't need or want.
It's especially hard at the moment, as we're in what a appears to be a very active developement firmware development cycle at Samsung.
Though in the past Darky's rom was a safe bet for beginners, offering a decent mix of extra features along with stability and speed improvements over stock roms, their roms in the gingerbread era have lacked polish.
Then we have cyanogen based roms which are independent of the samsung devlopement cycle but are for advanced flashers who like to flash every other day it would seem.
TL;DR
Pick the rom which suits you. I like Surface at the moment. It suits my needs. But i'm on the precipace of flashing a cyanogen based rom
Just say 1 2 3 4 and choose 1
+ 1 to all of the above, roms are like wine, get out and taste them
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, +1 too.
Just wanted to add that if you want a really smooth and fast phone, after reading the roms threads, I give you the advice of reading the custom kernel threads too...
The kernel is, in my opinion, the best way to have a smoother phone.
I think you can have the rom you want (design and functionalities wise) but if you want smoothness, stability and / or good battery usage, you will have to carefully choose the kernel you want...
For CM7 roms, I don't know the kernels...
But for Samsung roms, the 3 best kernels of the moment, in my opinion (because they are in active development and the devs are working really really really ****ing hard...) are Talon (performance, stability, energy), Galaxian (performance) and Semaphore kernels (stability).
Hope it will help !

CM vs GPe - What's the difference?

Hey guys,
since i'm currently a flashaholic and dont want to stick with sense rom's (i just dont like them, can't say why). I'm trying around a bit, mostly with GPe rom's.
But whats the real difference between GPe and CM based rom's?
- Which rom/version is more stable?
- Which rom/version got the better perfomance/battery life?
I know that CM based roms are having more features and looking nice (at least for some peoples).
But i want a overall good performance, stability and moderate batterylife.
Thanks in advice

You've to try the roms for choose which is better.
Howeve the GE have some features like beats audio and some thing from sense, and the update are from htc with the latest release of android.
The CM rom have some features like the editing of status bar and so on, and are built from developers
Well, i dont hear that much music, so beats-audio is useless, not at all, but a bit.
I'm tired of testing around
Just thought you guys can share your experience with some of your used roms

The problem is that mod don't like thread as: which rom is better for you?
This rom have a better battery then this?
And questions like this
Yeah i know, but it actually isnt a thread like this
I just wanna hear some experience
Google play edition roms are built on HTC's framework, or they were when it released. AOSP roms are actually built from AOSP framework using the libs and drivers and device trees that have been custom built for the one.
So the foundation of the Google Play edition, the part the user never sees, is a lot closer to stock sense from HTC minus the interface and launcher, while CM and other AOSP roms are built from AOSP style source code (CM from their source, others from their own custom source code some of which is truly custom and some of which is modified from CM source)
There's a lot of advantages to running AOSP source code based romms if you're going for an AOSP rom, but theres also a lot of users that can't use adb or fastboot and don't want to learn how and don't care to read into a rom thread, and the google play edition stuff is nice for people who want a phone with a stock google launcher, that doesn't have the sense interface heft, and just want things to work with an out of the box type experience. You know the type, they don't do a clean install for six months and wonder why the headlights in their car blink and settings force closes when they press the volume rocker.
There are certain apps that will work with the GPE and others that will only work with AOSP source, so on and so fourth. Half the people are better suited for GPE rom's and stockish foundations and then the other chunk of the people only buy their phone so they wipe it till its raw getting HTC stuff off and get custom AOSP source based roms on instead. It all depends on the user and what's better fitted for their experience.
In your case if you're not running sense roms at all and you like to follow development from what I've seen because I've seen you on here a good bit, I'd get into some real AOSP for a bit and see how you like it. The good thing about AOSP is that it's infinitely customizable and any user that wants too could be theming in a week and compiling/merging source in a month and cooking roms for their personal use. Most people way less than that. That doesn't mean that the devs publishing roms don't have a lot of time in them, it's just much easier to compile and work with the source than the HTC source is and the senseish framework.
Thanks @CharliesTheMan Thats a pretty good answer
Well i liked CM/AOSP rom's on my other phones and never used stock-ish ones.
Well, mainly i use my phone for phoning around (no sh*t! lol), social networking, taking photos and derping around a bit.
I never used the sense-features (blink feed, zoe, beats-audio etc. - i like the gallery, but honestly.. i like quickpic much more, i like it minimalism), neither like the look of sense.
I'm just a bit scared of using an AOSP rom, i dont really now why.. maybe scared of phone-signal-breaks, quality breaks or something like this.
But to be honest, i have to test it by myself i know, like the performance, stability and battery - its stuff i have to test and figure out by myself, because everyone is using the phone not in the same way and everyone got other recommendation from a rom and i got the point you wanted to say with your post

Need a rom suggestion..

I'm getting the N6 tomorrow and it'll be my first rom device in over a year. I'm looking for a rom that's fast, smooth and stable. Features and customizations aren't important as performance and battery.
What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Obviously what your suggestions here are going to be biased towards the particular user's experiences.
It's like coming to this forum and asking need a phone suggestion, everybody will suggest a Nexus 6 because it will be biased. My recommendations would be look at all of them (or the ones that interest you) and give it a try.
That's my most unbiased answer. If you're looking for a biased answer then it'd be Chroma because it's a ROM maintained by me and I'm quite passionate about maintaining and providing updates with the newest and latest things that I personally find useful.

There's is nothing wrong with recommending your own product. The fact that you took the time to post your opinion is awesome. I know asking people's opinion on roms can be kind of tricky, But It's nice to hear peoples mini review and opinion even if it's, Because they use the Rom.
Question, Do you have a video or tutorial on your Rom, I'm going to run with it, But would like to know more about it and it's features. Thanks!

Certainly there is nothing wrong with it but it feels dirty to lead someone onto another person's benefit. I respect honesty and am a honest person by heart. I try my best to give the most unbiased answer to others.
And absolutely, there are two video/reviews of the ROM although they are on older builds of the ROM. You can see a newer updated feature list on the changelog https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c7wNrT0khaipv-M0Z35OPQ8sxPHO-e9-Rk945fo4iJE/edit compared to the date of the video/reading.

Best thing to do however is to try out a few roms and keep the one you like most. It all depends on your preferences and usage.

@J.Guido85 Your ROM choice will come down to your preference. Do you want a minimalistic or feature packed ROM? Chroma will in fact give you the most features along with some of the best performance/battery life available. Rastapop will offer you a very light feature set as it is a very minimal but stable ROM.
If you're in fact looking for a ROM that will give you the best features & performance on the N6, Chroma is definitely among the top N6 ROM's in terms of great support, features, stability, and battery life. I've been personally using Chroma has my daily driver ever since flashing it well over a month ago, it continues to impress with every update.
I have a YouTube channel with a lot of Nexus 6 ROM overviews you can check out if you want here. I update weekly.

You do realise that performance and battery are opposite ends of the same scale? And that bias towards one is bias away from the other? Also that every kernel can be tweaked to bias towards either as much as you want?
Basically I'm saying they're all the same if you know what you're doing. Choose based on features then tweak to performance OR battery

[Q] What are great roms for original features?

I would like to know what the favorite roms are for original features. When I say original features, I mean features that aren't particularly prevalent on most roms. A lot of roms offer roughly the same feature set in regards to customization (and there's nothing wrong with that), but is there a particular rom that stands out to you that offers original features or optimization that you just can't find on other roms. I've always been a fan of paranoid android but they've been slightly MIA of late. My apologies if this thread already exists, I did a search beforehand to no avail. Just looking for opinions! Thanks!
You're asking conflicting questions. Slim ROMs are by far the most original, coming up with stuff specifically that other developers aren't but then their ideas are so good, they end up in most other ROMs anyway so yeah, where as slim are IMHO the most original, they're never different for long - and nor is any other ROM

Fair point! I suppose I wasn't wording that quite right. I guess I was asking more what you answered. Where do the ideas and features originate, and what roms are more than just Kangs? Thanks for your reply!
nexus 6 original development threads http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development
all other ROMs are just kangs, to various degrees(even these ROMs are partially kangs).
