root or not to root dilema - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, it's really a dilemma for me to root this phone and get rid of all this annoying ads or stay non rooted and have OTA updates. Please tell me your advice here. Thanks!

What ads? In the browser? You can use lightning browser or Firefox or nochromo for ad blocking browsers, or adguard - you can block ads everywhere, including all apps if you get premium subscription, you just have to deal with an annoying persistent icon in status bar.

I just have been rooted since my first galaxy S but now the reasons to do so are constantly fading with every new model. Also, in my opinion ah the moment there is no reliable root method as it was the case with CF auto root in the past. What is your opinion?

I didn't root the phone for about 3 weeks and honestly didn't feel a strong need to. I just get the urge to tweak after a while and got bored after I optimized the phone as much as I could on stock. That was the longest I have ever gone before I rooted a phone. Performance and battery life have been exceptional from day one for me. The only thing rooting did for me personally was get a custom kernel to smooth out the occasional choppy scrolling, get nandroid backups and use titanium backup to uninstall some system apps. There are still a lot of benefits to rooting your phone and loosing Samsung pay wasn't a big deal for me since mobile payments are a bit gimmicky to me.

i'd hate to be one the tough asses you see on here but, how about not rooting your company phone?
Not rooting a company phone, it is my phone but i connect to my work with it for emails, contacts, etc... but to take your method of thinking... Perhaps we should'nt root our phones at all since verizon does not approve of it....

I don't think he is saying that we shouldn't root our phones because companies disapprove. I think he is saying, don't root your phone if you want that particular app to work without issue....
I'm curious to know how the app checks whether the device is rooted. I see similar behavior with the new Android Market on my rooted Nook Color; Movies just don't show up, but I don't get a SuperUser request, or anything indicating the app is checking for the ability to gain root.

Are you sure its rooted? Rooted? Rooted?
I bet that the app can scan the installed apps and check for SU. I would check the permissions of the app and see if there is anything odd. If your running CM7 i thought a little while back they introduced the ability to block permissions for apps. Might start there.

Real reason to root the Nexus 4

Anybody have one besides for development? The Google representative here at Best Buy is arguing that to him, he sees to reason to root a nexus phone because its already AOSP. I watched the new XDA video on it and showed him but he feels he isn't missing anything worth it.

Rooting will allow you to install some apps that require root ie. TitaniumBackup.

How else would someone use rooted apps?
Titanium backup, adaway, even cerburus offers better protection on rooted devices.
Maybe you want to do a nandroid backup, flash ROMs, kernels, tweaks etc

So it can grow when water is added to it.
Nandroid backups...

I tried that a while ago. He said "android already does that, when I logged in it downloaded all my apps" i tried explaining that he had to download them and with titanium backup it saves your settings and everything and you don't need data, but he didn't listen saying he was on WiFi and something else. And he says he's okay with the virus protection 4.2 offers.
I just figured out why its useless talking to him though. He's a iSheep. He only has a nexus 7 and 4 because Google gave them to him.

Well if someone is completely against rooting and doesn't see any benefit in it, then he will be happy even with a iPhone.
No need to argue about the missed possibilities

Adway is my number one reason. I can't stand ads anymore. They are everywhere! on the internet browser, games, radio and apps. Adaway gets rid of all of them. Makes me enjoy my nexus phone so much more

I'm tired of flashing ROMs, after a G1, Vibrant, Galaxy Tab and GS2. I'm currently happy enough with proper unskinned, pure Android on my N7 & N4. I don't feel compelled to root either one. It sounds like some of you think that makes me a bad person! LOL
My old Galaxy Tab is on CM9, used by my 7 y.o. son. The GS2 is on CM10, used by my 12 y.o. daughter. I consider both more imperfect combinations than 4.2 on my Nexxi. Great, best options for their hardware, but the Nexxi are superior. My daughter wants an N4 when they're back in stock. I now want a N10 to complete the trifecta.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
yah its user preference. Some people get tired of flashing ROMs, like myself and in the end of the day I just want phone to work reliably. BUT i am rooted!
I love the aspect of custom kernels most. You can improve performance, battery life or even add features to the device.
Don't bother the guy into rooting. I've rooted since my Og moto droid. Back then you wanted more performance or features that didn't come stock. Aosp has hit a point where I don't need to root anymore. So many Roms out there that claim its been optimized, zipalinged , faster this and that battery this and that. It always ended up buggier than **** days later. Rooting takes time, research, more time.
4.2 has everything I need. I don't need ti because I don't need to wipe my phone. There are no preinstalled apps I need to get rid of. Tethering is included.
Android is about choice. Please don't label someone an isheep because they are happy with what they have.
Root is 1 file. Why not?
Modify clock speed
Modify the screen colors(Voodoo i think)
Performance gains(ext4, jit, etc)
Fix Bugs in stock Rom
Can fix compatibility with apps
Remove Bloatware if exists
Access to Root apps like ChainFire 3D
Titanium backup
Don't need anymore reason

Why root the n6? It doesn't make sense to me

Im trying to figure out WHY I need to root the nexus 6. I know how to do it but this is as pure android as it comes so why root? Other than decryption and ability to put other roms on, what other reason is there? Seems like a pain in the ass to me because everything gets wiped out after unlocking the bootloader.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Add blockers, sound mods for increased ear bud volume, titanium backups....those are on my current to do list, but I have not rooted yet. It's the pita updates that are stopping me.
Thats why the first thing you do when you get the phone is to unlock the bootloader. Even if you "decrypt" the phone, it will wipe your phone as you have to format user data.
The reasons for rooting is the same as any phone, we simply root because we want to and we want to get the most of our precious device. Nexus devices are devices that are out there in the wild that are meant to be tinkered with in terms of rooting, custom roms, custom kernels, custom mods, etc.
Some highlights of rooting,
1) Custom Kernels... tuneables for these kernels require root (RGB, Min/Max Freq, etc)
2) Apps that require root (titanium backup, adblock, greenify, etc)
...... and more.

thats why people who need root do it right away, so they dont lose much data. you dont need root, so you don't have another reason to root. i do. i change my system files, so need root for that. plus, stock tends to lag in places. i change how my cpu works, so it gets rid of all the lag. you need root for that as well. plus viper4android.. also needs root. plus many other things that i use, also needs root.
All very valid reasons. I forgot about this because my work made me use Samsung phone which I hated because of touchwiz. Note 2/3 just sucks

This might be the best phone since the nexus 4 or the g1. I love it and will be rooting!

Oh yeah! Another big reason to root the N6 is to change the DPI.
You're practically seeing the same thing you'd see on a smaller device but with a bigger screen so changing the DPI becomes super useful and game changing.

I can't figure why anyone would buy a Nexus 6 and NOT root it. It's so easy it's definitely NOT a PITA.
It's like someone once asked Willie Sutton : "Why do you rob banks?" His reply : "Because that's where the money is!"

Sensei, use Trickster Mod to control. Use intelliplug and intelliactive governor. Turn off MPdecision.
Or take advantage of the many other controls in there, including RGB screen color adjustments.

I rooted for viper audio.
had my N6 for a bit. Considering unlocking/ rooting primarily for the tap-to-wake functionality.
can't understand why they didn't enable it right outta the box...
I rooted so I could edit my build prop and tether since Verizon blocks me otherwise.
I agree with ad blocking as a reason to root. It's especially apparent when you tether a computer. As you surf the web you're actually a bit shocked at how few ads you see.

is it worth rooting?

Previously I've used Samsung devices, which I root the moment I get them. I've tried stock and its horrible, rooting is pretty much necessary. But then I got this phone and its got just about everything I wanted in a ROM on my Samsung devices. What has been the experience of you lot? Is it that big of a difference?
It's just like everyone else says. 100% personal preference.
I root all my devices primarily for Xposed framework. It's something I pretty much can't live without. The stock ROM on the X is near flawless as is, so I have no desire to flash a custom ROM, but Xposed gives me the little flourishes that I like that aren't offered by the stock ROM.
Aside from flashing ROMs on your Samsungs, were there any root apps that you grew accustomed to using? Maybe Titanium Backup? If so, then root. If not, don't. You'll have an amazing experience either way.

Couple random little things, like viper4android, but your sentiment was the general mimpression I had as well.
It is all personal preference. I used to root for the Roms, but the Moto X 2014 is nearly perfect on stock. I still root because I like to be able to install an ad blocker and be able to reboot rather than just powering off.
Although I initially rooted my X on KitKat for xposed, I believe its perfectly good even left as stock. I only rooted after moving to Lollipop to reduce the DPI as that's the one thing about stock X that really gets on my nerves. Everything else is gravy.

It is, yeah. But I've always been more comfortable doing it via apps or build.prop editors..so..
Besides, I tend to change it around quite a few times till I've settled on one that suits me best. I'd rather not be tied down to a computer to do it. Rooting is just a one-time hassle so I prefer it that way. Plus, greenify, adblock, etc.

Root and issues with apps like Directv

So I'm back to android after some time with ios. I have rooted phones before but last time I tried, probably with the S4, I rooted only for the true multiwindow option using xposed framework as I recall, and I enjoyed free hotspot too, though that was not a big deal.
Where the problems began I think was with media apps like DirecTv. DIRECTV just wouldn't work on a rooted or jailbroken device.
Is there a work around for this?
Also, don't laugh, is there anyway to run an ios app on android. At work we have a custom app that on my iPhone I can go and download from the website, wonder if there's some way to get that to work on Android.
