New the the nexus 6 questions? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought a nexus off my friend today. It's the At&t variant running Android 6.0. I really can't find a definitive answer around, maybe I'm just stupid. But is there a way to root Android 6 and bring it down to Lollipop since marshmallow seems really buggy. Thank you in advance.

Well, your new phone is running a developers preview, since Marshmallow isn't released yet. In other words: your friend should be able to help you go back to Lollipop, since he/she was able to flash the preview to start with.
But, yes, it's quite easy to get Lollipop back. Flash a factory image:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008
This one is quite good as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-nexus-6-one-beginners-guide-t2948481
In general, the stickies at top contain a lot of useful reading.

Maybe irrelevant as well, but just so you know the final version of Android 6 is hopefully coming out really soon and being a Nexus device you should have access to it relatively soon as well

Note as longterm developer phone?

Hi!
I'd like to know if it's reasonable to get a Note as developer phone for the next two years. (I'm noob to android, not to programming in general.)
I will need a more or less up to date android version. My (pessimistic) guess is that Samsung will upgrade the Note to JB and thats about it. There are some good roms out now and i wonder how the situation will be in one or two years. (Ver. 5.0?) Will the development community pick up where Samsung stops and continue to support the Note or will developers move on to newer phones?
Maybe someone can give me any insight on how much work is needed (was needed for ics) to port a new (minor/major) android version to a device or existing rom? (Anything between 1guy/1week and 4guys/4weeks?)
I know the usual answer is "get a Nexus" but I really like the big screen, thats why i have to ask.
Good to hear that one more person is coming into development of the GNote. Most Welcome. We are already hearing about the Chinese Jelly Bean leaks for Galaxy Note, then android keeps updating. But no matter what, we will have the devices and the development will move on. Hoping to see you soon.
I dont expect note to become developer device, better get a nexus for that
the nexus series are the first to be upgraded and build for developers
nothing beats the note in terms of screen thought
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I wouldnt expect this to have long term development either..Its the only negative I have about the phone but Im happy enough..
I'll be honest though I am pretty sure I'll get the next Nexus simply because development cant be beat that route.
as with all android devices the main dev base will always move on to newer devices when they upgrade, however im sure there will be for a good few years people sticking with the note after all main are locked into a contract or simply havnt the funds to buy a new devices when its released.
I for one will have my note for another 18 months or so, and look forward to using it solidly for deving, i have found it a great platform for app work/running linux/ROM development.
Of cause we dont know what the next big update of android will bring, it may mean that the note no longer has the power to run it etc but thats unlikely for some time (after all even the g1 'can' run ICS).

If you want a developer phone, you really shouldn't consider anything other than a Nexus.
Whilst the Galaxy Nexus isn't exactly top drawer these days, it's still very good, and both it and the Nexus S will see Jelly Bean. Whilst I expect support for the Nexus S to drop off after Jelly Bean, the Galaxy Nexus should be good for at least the version after JB.

Lollipop Update Rumored November/ December

Check out this article on SamMobile!

This is with out doubt wishful thinking for us AT&T customers.
Knowing AT&T though I would say February 2015...
Actually, Lollipop is proving harder to crack for root access than our phones very own bootloader. I hate to say this but rooted users may be behind stock for the first time ever in just a few short months.
As long as I still have root, I'll be OK staying on KitKat. I'm not going to assume Lollipop will be rooted until it happens. They're making these phones and operating systems harder and harder to root, until one day there will only be development phones which will have root.

If this was the mindset of of programmers and hackers there would never be a rooted phone. It doesn't matter how hard android tries to stop it there will always be a way found to get around it plain and simple. It's why the security industry is making billions every year. There is not a single device on the planet that is fully capable of being 100% secure. And there never will be a device made like this as long as humans continue to make the devices. Artificial Intelligence may be able to do it one day.
Exclusive video: final Lollipop firmware on the S5!
Looks nice to me! I hope Samsung can update the status bar icons a bit like stock Google. . I hate that out of place Wi-Fi icon.. The Nexus style looks awesome.
well it is already December now.. any new rumors on when we may get Lollipop?

I don't disagree with you, but users are starting to steer clear of devices that are difficult to root. Just look at the at&t note 4. Not even a hint of root and very little developer interest. People would rather just get the t-mobile version. Samsung and at&t seem to be a bad combination for people who want to root and ROM moving forward. Unless we get a developer edition like Verizon.

I'm honestly looking forward to getting rid of my S5. It's a nice phone, but I love the pure google feel like my Nexus 7 has. I'll be upgrading to a Nexus 6 soon. The touchwiz is just ugly, and I certainly don't want a bloated unrootable version of lollipop. The development for this phone is dead, no updates for months now. I'm a flashaholic so I'm absolutely bored out of my mind. If it wasn't for the messed up proximity sensor on the S4 I have I'd probably be using that and flashing like crazy.
When I spoke to an AT&T rep yesterday, they were saying that AT&T has Lollipop and they are modifying it for our devices, with a tentative release date of Feb 2015...
We'll see how much that holds water.
I would be shocked if Lollipop could push anything that'd make me risk giving up just a rooted KK.

I completely agree with your statement. Honestly, I really am considering selling my S5 and getting something else.
I am honestly thinking about jumping ship from at&t all together and going to t-mobile as they don't have bootloaders locked down on their devices yet, plus I think their data plans and what not are better than at&t's current plans. The only issue I have with t-mobile is they don't have quite the selection of Android devices available that at&t does.

Symbian was the most secure mobile phone OS. I do not know why nokia ditched it in favor of windows phone and meego, Symbian still had so much potential.

I actually never used symbian. Some how samsung keeps sucking me in with the next phone or watch so I've given up root for now. I'm using the note edge just to try something different and it is pretty complete with out root. But the developers always make samsung ROMs smoother.

Rumor is Verizon s5 has lollipop on the way out.

What is influencing the names of ROMs these days?

I'm looking into getting the nexus 6 and was just trolling through the nex6 forums taking a look at developement..... And geeezzzz what happened to the names of ROMs like we had in the good ole days. I.e. OPEN KANG, CM-__, PACMAN, AOSP, NEXUQUE, PARANOID ANDROID, MIUI. You know the names we all were used to seeing. Now it seems like the names are all spoken in code or something. Check out the screen shot. Hard to tell what you're getting unless you go exploring each ROM post and check out the mods and screenshots.
You're right.
We GFlex users that haven't flashed any roms in a while when you get another phone you get scared from all these new roms with weird names. You gotta check every post to see if its based on stock/aosp/cm/pac or if its just a debloated rom. Info is just not as it used to be.

Yep the days of bootstrap recoveries and safestrap are gone. I fear that fastboot will soon fall by the way side too, with all these devices comimg with download mode and flashing with lg tools and Odin. Im going back to Motorola to get a taste of the good ole fastboot flash system ".......". My nexus 7 (2013) is so simple with multi-rom that I rarely need to open up the cmd prompt and " adb " anything.
Wait!!!
Are we giving up on this incredible phone?
I can't speak for anyone else but I've been eligible for an upgrade for over a year now, and have been sticking around 1. Cuz I do like the phone / durability. And 2. To help out and hopefully see a CM or AOSP ROM working on this device. But I gotta see what all the hype is about with these new snapdragon 64 bit processors and 4 gigs or ram is all about. I'm really trying to be patient and wait on the new nexus 6.2 as I heard it called. Not sure if that's the official name. Its all still rumors I believe. But its supposedly the next version of nexus 6 but 64 bit. To keep up with Samsung and lg's release of 64 bit devices.

I heard there will be a revamp of the Nexus 5 device...
Supossedly LG and Huawei were in dispute to seek for who wins the making of the ¨second gen Nexus 5¨
This would be awesome, though I love my GFlex cuz of battery life and durability too, my G3 just died on me last week :crying: :crying: havent revived it so, Im back with the Flex, hope to see a CM or AOSP build sooner than later.
Good luck with the Motorolas, I´ve had nothing more than great experience with motorola smartphones, owned Atrix 1, 2 and HD, Droid XT912 and Droid HD, awesome phones all of them!
OK maybe its the nexus 5 revamp and not nexus 6. I could have been wrong. Either way , pure aosp on a nexus device sure would be nice. I rarely get to play around with my nexus 7 (2013) since its been integrated into my dash and used as my head unit now. It comes out once a month or so just to flash an update or new ROM to keep things running smooth.

To get the builds go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-stock-ota-urls-t2906493
Your build is at the very bottom, if you are wanting to do the OTA updates.
You will need to follow the path up on the builds so
LRX21O from LNX07M
LRX22C from LRX21O
LMY47D from LRX22C
and so on...
But the key to this is how to apply the updates...
Goto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfDSZsr6230 and watch that video. You will need the Nexus Root toolkit from wugfresh.com
It shows you how to sideload the files one by one. I was also stuck with no OTAs from verizon.
So I may have already goofed. I bought a Project Fi Nexus 6 and want to use it on Verizon now. I don't remember what build I was originally on but last night when tooling around, I have gone to LRX22C from whatever I had before. I thought I would be able to get OTAs on my unrooted/relocked phone but everytime I check for one - nothing happens, it says my phone is up to date but clearly it isn't as LRX22C isn't even 5.1.
Do I have to follow the path using WUGfresh or can I just jump clear up to the universal Marshmallow build and be okay?

If you are on verizon, I could not get any OTA's to work and I was on LMY47E.
If you want to go to MRA58K then I would follow the chain. Else you will probably have to wipe all data on you phone.
LRX22C is One step below LMY47E for Verizon.
I did a whole post on how I got it up to MRA58K over here

Skip the OTAs. Download MRA58K, extract all files, flash all imgs except for userdata. Voila! You're on Marshmallow with all of your data saved.
Learn how to do things manually and magic like this can happen.
Well, no one told me that I had to do all those shananigans to cover for Googles crap...
Ill probably just return the damn phone and get an iphone... at least the updates there are really like they should, not this crap, this false advertising Nexus devices are updated fast and automatically...
Also, let me talk to my clients, the ones that also bought nexus 6 from the store where I work, some of them with 50, 60+ years, and tell them they have to Download MRA58K, extract all files, flash all imgs except for userdata... I guess they aill all be thrilled at how easy the process is when compared to other phones...
Really guys, get a grip for god sake, not everyone wants to be bothered by such things.
Also, this posts are here to bring attention to a situation happening to alot of people, which is updates not available as OTA on phones, even old updates. If any of us wanted to sideload it or flash it we would have done it already since there 10000's of posts explaning it right... I wouldnt actually need for "nhizzat" to explain it to me!

That's not something you have to do, it's an option. It's also one of the reasons we buy a Nexus, to be able to update manually instead of waiting.
If it's not something you're interested in doing, keep waiting. Or return the phone and enjoy your iPhone. I, for one, don't care if you do nor if you convince your 50+ clients to do the same.
I thought you've bought a more than a year old phone because it was cheap, but still had good specs. Amiright?
So if it sat on a shelf for more than a year, why should it have the latest software? Also why should anybody care that it's not the month old Marshmallow on it? Go and complain on iPhone-not-developers that you can't install iOS9 on a 3G.
This is XDA developers and not the Google support hotline. Here people give you solutions for free, too bad that it's above your skills to try it yourself, but then at least don't be rude to those who try to help.

I did read it. And I didn't understand your anger then, I don't get it now either.
To a 50, 60+ user as you said it, it really doesn't matter if it's 5.0 or 5.1 or 6.0. It matters to you. And if you can't flash it yourself, then take it to a GSM shop, they'll do it for you. Perhaps they'll look at you funny if you say you read about it here.
As for the OTAs, instead of ranting here, you should ask Google support if it's something wrong with their servers.
Edit: I've bought mine cca two montha ago, and itcame with 5.1, and I've got an OTA immediately. Maybe there's something wrong with the updates from 5.0. A lot of people have bought N6s now because of the great price, maybe they'll notice the bug and fix it.

So I've used Googled a bit (pun intended), and found out that there was some hickups with the n6 and n9 OTAs to 5.1.1, so probably if your device doesn't show updates it's intentional.
OTAs only want to install if your device only has genuine factory contents. So the the update checks everything from recovery to system, and if all checksums match they apply the update. However, sometimes the update died mid update, and from then on either the phone didn't start, or it did, but remained mostly unchanged, but since some files were replaced refused to update.
So I say patience, it's possible the OTAs will be available when they fix this. But for those who came here to XDA to learn, it's easy to do it manually.

Confused - Root and Revert back to 5.0.2

I am not having an easy time finding a clear cut way to root my phone. I know that since 5.1.1 came out like 2-3 weeks ago that I need to be on 5.0.2. So I need to know how to revert back to that. And then I also know that you need to do some weird **** from what I am used to to just simply root our phones. Something with the OE2 to OF3 and some other things related to that. Really weird to me when I am used to more or less pressing a button and I am rooted...... This being said I need to know how to root my phone too. And if it is possible to root 5.1.1 then those instructions would be preferred(saying it is stable/tested/etc.
I ultimately want to be able to use either XtreStoLite ROMs. Preferably the Odex Pure Edition though but from what I've read when you do the 5.0.2 version there was some call audio problems...which is no good for a phone lol.
Last phone I really tried to do **** with was the HTC Aria. Had an S3 for awhile but didn't feel like doing anything with it since it was so old at the time I received it(almost 2 years ago now)
/startrant
I feel like XDA is way more confusing than it used to be. Either that or the community for the S6 isn't the best from other phones I've used, personally. This new UI for XDA is also weird to me as well(doubt it is very new though).
Used to seeing a clear cut:
How To Root thread(s)
List of Custom Roms thread(s)
other useful threads that make going around the phones forum so much easier than having to use the search engine.
it definitely doesn't help that more or less all other versions of the phone work with each other easily vs ATT being ****ing douchebags and can't even just release the current OS right when literally every other company does.
Conclusion.... **** ATT... Long ago I wanted to go to verizon but wasn't in a position to but figured at this point in time(3-4 years later, maybe more) that things might have changed. **** ATT

There is no way to root your phone, the bootloader is signed we don't have the keys.
In addition it would behoove you greatly if you learned to both search and to be knowledgeable as to what your 'one click' solutions do. Without knowing what your clicking you'll find it hard to fix when things go wrong.
In short though your SoL here, unless your phone is on an exceptionally early build you can't root, and I doubt it's on that early of a build unless you made an effort to keep it from updating and bought the phone close to launch.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
OP asked about reverting to 5.0.2, so it's pretty safe to assume he's on 5.1.1.
OP - at this point, as posted above, all you can do is wait and hope. There is no way to revert to a rootable build from 5.1.1, nor root 5.1.1, on an ATT branded device, at this time. If you are committed to wanting root and custom ROMs, don't buy any AT&T or VZW branded devices, and don't buy devices that are running anything other than mainstream processors. Nexus is your friend. Or revert back to your Aria - I'm still using mine, running CM11, as a media player.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
I know 5.1.1 can't be rooted but I thought 5.0.2 can be. But from the sounds of it once I have 5.1.1 installed then my bootloader is changed? And reverting back doesn't change the loader? Oh, after reading the last part of the 1st reply. It sounds like all those people that say they've rooted there 5.0.2 version was just because they purchased at launch?
As for understanding the 'one click' solutions. At the times I did know what they did. The forums for the phone(s) I was using at the time were a lot more neat and straightforward(this is apparently one word, didn't know...) to understand. Like I said, this new layout of XDA(it is new to me even if it might be 2 years old or something) isn't as nice/useful personally. And as for searching, I do but once again the searches are different than how other forums do searches. Or maybe it is just the cluttered feeling I get from the S6 forums maybe. Not sure.
P.S.(_Dennis_) No **** it is a lot of complaining...granted I basically got the phone for free because of how AT&T does there plans and ****...this still makes me hate AT&T even more than I used to...at least with my older phones there was hope for someone to make ROMs/Roots/etc for the phone, just took longer because AT&T rides the short bus... So yes I will complain. But I still genuinely had questions I wanted answers. I know you had to read what I wrote but you didn't take it in I guess. Because the only way I would have some of that info is if I was searching. I just didn't know about only the launch models basically can be rooted and no others. Which is why I was asking about reverting to 5.0.2
