Sticky Volume Button And Lock Button... - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Note 5 By Far Is Kind Off the Best Phone Ive Used... But Ive Recently Started Having problems With The Volume Button... Need Help With It... Any Fixes... Sometimes My Lock Button doesnt Function... It seems to hold itself down... And so does the Volume Down button... Help Out Please...

I have a two week old Note 5 (SM-N9208) and I'm experiencing this very same thing! All three side buttons have quickly lost their click-yness and are no longer tactile. The volume down button in particular often gets stuck in a depressed mode and I need to give it a few pushes to free it up.
Is this normal? Anyone else experiencing this? Very close to returning it to where I got it to have this problem looked at. Thanks!

Note 5 volume button issue
bought last week, experiencing the same issue.:crying:

Got the same problem on my Note 4.

I have the same issue with my note 5. The power button was not working perfectly since the beginning but then it started working fine somehow. Now the volume down button is having the issue.
So pissed at this issue.
Also, i am having issues with wireless charging.
Sent from my SM-N9208 using Tapatalk

I turned my note 5 off and used a qtip and rubbing alcohol to swab all the side buttons and worked them in and out the best I could then gave it some drying time and turned it back on and it has helped all 3 keys.

Yeah sometimes I have the very same problem then other days the keys are fine. Very annoying in my mind.

Same issue here, my down volume and my power button keys are not clicky like before, i tried the Qtip and alcohol and it works a lil bit.

i have same problem.

It sucks 'coz it was fine a few days ago, got it around January-ish.

For those who have the same problem, do you guys happend to have a wrap(e.g. slickwrap, dbrand) + case on your phones?

I'm having same issue too. I'm having problems listening to music on wired or Bluetooth. The volume cuts out tben comes back on. Anyone have this problem?

I'm having this issue right now with the volume down button, I inmediatly searched on google and here I am, lol. The button works but makes a weird click and doesn't feel like it should. I have a Skinomi TechSkin in the back of the phone since 3 weeks ago and I was using a Verus case without any problem but today I'm using a Spigen Ultra Hybrid Clear Case and now I'm having this issue.

rubbing alcohol and a q tip will temporarily fix your problem.
IT will last for about a week, then the clicky clicky sound will be gone and the button will stick again.
For a permanent solution you need to find watch makers oil and use that instead of alcohol.... the alcohol dries up to quick...
have fun...

Okay guys, I have a quick fix. My volume down key was stuck.
Gunna sound like a troll here but I promise this works. Just looked everywhere for a fix and found nothing (aside from disassembling my frigging Note5).
!TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I'm not sure why this just worked for me.. but place your lips over the key that is sticking, gather a SMALL amount of spit over the key and push the spit forward with pressure. Then click the key 10 or so times and boom. Clicky keys again :-]
It worked for me, I hope it works for you.

Worked for me that spit pressure trick. Lol

Omg this worked for me also! Thanks!

My issue may have been not the typical issue - but I had this problem after I dropped my phone and the bottom volume rocker hit a piece of metal dead on. The button expanded ever so slightly and it would get stuck depressed. I ended up having to get a pair of tweezers to pull it back out, but every time I pushed it back in it would get stuck. At my wits end, I finally tried this:
Lay the phone down on its face
pull the button out as far as it can get
find a good flathead screwdriver (newer one that is not worn - good edges)
place the flathead screwdriver on the side of the button (the narrow side that runs at a 90% angle from the side of the phone, not the face of the button)
lightly whack the screwdriver with a hammer
What this did was expand the soft metal just enough to allow room for the button to move freely back and forth.
I thought I was screwed, but this little trick got my volume button working again (after I had tried other methods and scratched the area up a bit).
Note: This was a desperation move on my part, not recommended if you think your volume or power rockers/buttons are just dirty and sticky - mine was actual soft metal issue.

Power Button Problem

Recently I've been having issues with my power button. When I attempt to press and hold it to bring up the "Power off," "Reboot phone," etc. menu, it immediately just shuts off the screen. It isn't recognizing the long-press action. Pulling the battery is almost always the only option I have to shut down the phone. Very frustrating. Anyone have a similar issue or suggestions on how to remedy the situation? Thanks.
Well if you're trying to reboot or go to recovery/fastboot you can download quick boot from the market. Not sure how to fix your shut off screen problem though.
Yeah, I've been a Quick Boot user for quite some time. It's actually shutting down the phone that I'm having a problem with. I just can't figure out why it won't recognize my long-press anymore. It just immediately turns off the screen. Very frustrating.
I have the same problem
I tried with hard reset and different original rom but the problem persists, I think it's a hardware problem.
there's a post around that describes how to clean the power button which usually fixes it. will try to find it.

Sweet. Thanks!

EDIT: I was having to use a Gscript to power off/reboot the phone.
Leave "su" checked and make a gscript. In it put:
Code:
reboot -p
for shutdown
don't forget the carriage return at the end.
I've been having the same problem for the past couple of days. The most annoying thing is that unlocking the phone can take several attempts.
I finally had time to try to clean the button. I took the back off and took a small brush and stuck a few bristles down the side of the power button and wiggled them around in an attempt to clean around it, then blew around the button with some air. I used an air compressor but a can of compressed air should work the same. This was 5 minutes ago and, so far, it seems to have fixed my power button problem. Hopefully it was just dirty instead of faulty.

Wow. Well, I'll have to give the brush and spray method a shot and see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

Where exactly did you stick the brush? I just got this problem :I
I realised this issue when I started using the desire rom port by Paul. I've since then switched to the Froyo build and don't encounter this anymore. Don't know if it was just a coincidence.
I've tried cleaning with a brush and compressed air, but the problem still persists. Grrr...

I took the back off and just stuck a few bristles of the brush down the button hole. If this helps you visualize it, the phone was vertical and so was the brush. The bristles went straight down beside the power button and I wiggled it around a little. I tried to get all four sides of the button, but can't remember if I was successful. I don't know if the brush actually did anything, but it's been working better after brushing and blowing it out.
I have this problem randomly... My way is to hold the power button down the whole time while pushing the shutdown button and the okay when the prompt appears!
I seem to have finally fixed my power button. Basically I just took the battery cover off and then gently pried back the plastic power button toward the rear of the phone until I could see underneath it. Then I carefully shoved a safety pin between the plastic button and the actual electronics beneath it and lightly wiggled it around a bit. I repeated this several times, testing the functionality of the button in between attempts, and eventually got it back to proper working condition. If you're brave enough to attempt this, it might work for you too.

Do you use a case? If so, does it cover the volumes buttons?
Might be worth opening it up and blowing some hair around the volume buttons, could've gotten dirty.
If it's from moisture, having it in a bag of rice for a couple days could fix it.

Thanks no I don't have a case on it. I'll try opening it up and blowing some hair around. Could it be dust causing the issue?
I just went through this the other day with my power button. there are threads on the power button issue and in short the fixes work for some. you however, sound like you have the same problem I had. Most button issues are just dust and junk so spraying air or crc electronic cleaner works......My issue though, was that the button just broke inside and the contact was just floating in there making (in my case) the power menu appear and such. Your issue sounds like mine only being the volume up button, it increases the volume while floating around in there. I hope I'm wrong and those power button threads help you, but I had to replace my power button. I can solder ok and had an old phone with a similar button so I successfully attempted it myself, but there are places that do it for a fee and that info can also be found in this thread....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193057&highlight=power+button....good luck!!

[Q] Mushy Power Button

My power and volume up buttons are starting to stick a little bit and to press them feels a little mushy. Any way to clean them to restore the click they made when being pressed? This is really frustrating...

same here with the power button... one of it's sides is down. but it doesn't look like it's stuck. I can manage to put it on the right position again easily. It's more like if's loosing the tension...
Me too. Used to have a great feeling click to it. Not sure how long it's been bad, but noticed it a week ago. At times i can't feel it might at all. On a few occasions it's got stuck for long enough to bring up the power off menu.
My volume up is perfect. My volume down isn't so clicky any more, but nothing like the power key. It seems with volume down that now I've noticed and started writing this I've fixed it by pressing repeatedly. Didn't work for power...
I've just watched to this video where she disassemble the moto x:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dweww9_RF2E
At 13:40 we can see the button mechanism. It's an ordinary plastic membrane that offers the resistance for those buttons. I think the metal buttons are just too heavy for the kind of membrane that Motorola used on this... The curious thing is that I press the power button half of the times that I should press on an ordinary smartphone, because I always wake it up with the Moto Screen stuff...
Anyway.. I don't think there is a way to fix it without sending it to repair. They will probably disassemble it, change the membrane and send it back to you. And unless they change it for a more resistant membrane, nothing will prevent the issue from appearing again...

[Q] Power button not clicking

Hey guys
Just wanted to know if there is any way I could fix the power button to make it click. I picked up a Nexus 6 about a month ago used. The power button has no click to it,but I thought that was normal. But just today, I thought I would read into it because I noticed the volume buttons where clickey(never really use them) and that the power button should be too. How or can I fix the power button?
Thanks
hmm the power buttons works but there is no click?
Replace the power button/volume rocker flex cable it's all one unit. Easy to replace.

Hahaa. For you. I'm not opening my ****. If it works don't need no click.
It will fail soon enough.
I'm a technician. When these types of buttons lose the click, they fail soon after.

That's right. It feels terrible to press, plus some times when I press the power it doesn't turn on and I'm not sure if I pressed it hard enough....so usually I press very hard to make sure I don't have to press again. 90% of the time it comes right on.

Well, I did already take of the back to put on a real leather slickwrap skin(with replacement back) and the stock back was really on there(ripped off a piece of the plastic that stuck to the back cover), but I managed to get it off. Sucky part is, I'd have to rip it back off again and I'm not sure it will stick as well if I do that.
I just need to find the part I guess. I do think that eventually it might stop working.
pretty sure you can use a hair dryer or heat gun and get the back cover off rather easily, should be able to reapply it back again. here is a link to the power and volume buttons.

Sticking Buttons

So about once or twice a day when I change the volume the buttons will stick if i haven't hit them in a while. I don't know what would be causing this as my phone hasn't gotten wet or been damaged in any way and the case i have covers the buttons so nothing has really gotten on them. They will free up and work fine after i work them back and fourth a few times and then work ok until i don't change the volume for a day or so. Anyone having any similar button issues?
My wife has this issue with her s10 as well. The volume and power button sticks. It's a real pain
