Encryption on Device and MicroSD - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will help - I cannot find an option on the Fire 7 to encrypt the device and also encrypt the MicroSD card. I have trawled through all the settings and even the help search option on the device does not show anything at all for Encryption at all.
The device is definitely not encrypted as when connected to Linux via USB both the Device and MicroSD card mount with contents viewable and also erasable.
Other Fire Tablet models have the option for Device Encryption but not the Fire 7 it seems?
Can someone else please take a look?

Waiting for mine to turn up today, but it looks like they did indeed remove it.

Thank you it is now looking this way. I got some feedback on the Amazon forums and a few people where saying this security feature had been removed for 2015 models.

Whats with the USB OTG on this phone.

Coming from a long line of LG's, I do have to say I loved that LG's UI automatically recognized the USB and didnt need any apps to run it, and all other apps recognized it as well. So why doesnt the Nexus 6 do this? I am using stick mount but there are apps that dont recognize this, like with my G2 since it didnt have an SD card, so to save space i would setup titanium backup to store directly to the USB, but now it doesnt recognize it.
anyone have any ideas on how to work around this?
Custom ROMs can build automount in. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but have a read of the threads
Sorry if this seems like a flame, but stop posting the same junk all over....you posted in the two other threads, and now you went and created a third for what is probably your issue.
I have Stickmount working as expected on Stock, MeanPop and BlissPop. Its seen in Root Explorer and I can get it seen by TiBu (even though TiBu says its not writeable, it actually is).

stickmount may mount it but it doesnt automatically allow third party apps to see it. I have several apps that I use to use withmy OTG and they can no longer recognize it. and my first question was about doing it period, so dont be an ass. its a simple questions as to why the Nexus doesnt automatically do it. and so far I havent had any of the custom roms I have tried automatically mount it.

That is not a simple question. At least not to us, since none of us were present at any google meetings where this was either decided against or not discussed.

I can't tell you any that have it. I assume Slim will have it in the future when their 5.1 ROM progresses as they had it previously on KK devices. Actually it's really only the kernel that needs to mount it in the fstab, but it is always nice to have ROM support too, where it is shown in the storage menu.
What apps do you have that cannot recognise OTG? All stick mount does is put it in a folder on your sdcard. I expect all apps can browse to folders on sdcard?

thanks for your input. the original post should have asked about the transfer speeds as well, but thats not my biggest concern. quickpic use to automatically load everything up on as soon as the usb was mounted, but I havent tried it lately with any of the AOSP roms. I always liked the LG UI and never liked AOSP but since I see that stock google looks similar to AOSP that I have taken an interest to learn about them and play with their features and Euphoria 1.1 has it under storage settings but it doesnt do anything when I insert my usb. so it may still be being worked on or I could try a kernel that has it supported to see if that would do it.
but on older phones that never had SD cards I would use by USB for my Titanium Backup storage, but even with stickmount the app still wont notice it. I am going to try a few things that someone told me earlier and see if that works. my backups can become quite large and that valuable space when you only have 32gb.
so if yall have any ideas to try, let me know and I will be happy to give them a shot
Ah figured it out.. I realized I was still running my USB in exfat and once I reformatted it back to fat32 titanium now see's it.. Will have to play more to see if all is working right now

Yep it's a pain. ExFAT is microsoft proprietary. I'm surprised some vendors even use it. Some custom Kernels may allow use of NTFS or something. FAT32 is my only option because I have to plug into Windows and Linux systems.

OK, so now I have a new problem, maybe you have a work around. Since stickmount shows up under the SD card, the system counts its storage space with the space on the phone. So even tho its a 64gb USB, it won't transfer thinking there is is not enough space on the disk. Any ideas?

I think you're stuck on that one. The best way would be to mount it independently using the fstab of a custom kernel.

Moto G 2nd Gen XT1063 won't connect to PC after Marshmallow update

Moto G 2nd Gen XT1063 won't connect to my Windows PC after the Marshmallow update. In the past, I would see two folders upon connecting (one of them being the SD card). Now I just see an empty folder, and when I try to copy a file into it, I get the "Cannot copy item - The device has either stopped or has been disconnected" message in Windows.
USB debugging is enabled. I uninstalled/re-installed Motorola Device Manager (2.5.4), but that did not do any good.
Any help will be appreciated.
Note: I f***ing hate this. Whoever rolled this out without properly testing should be fired. I wish I could go back in time to this morning.
OK, here's how I solved this, and hopefully it'll help others:
Developer Options -> Select USB Configuration
In my case, MTP was shown to be already selected (as it should be).
I clicked on the "Charging only" option. This disconnected the device from the PC.
Then I selected MTP AGAIN. That did the trick (there was some driver install message that was displayed in Windows). Then the connection folder showed the familiar "Internal storage" display.
I cannot believe that as users, we have to go through this crap. Shame on Motorola/Lenovo/Google.
Spoke too quickly - it seems the phone loses the MTP setting every time and it has to be set over each time you connect to the PC.
Not exactly the answer to your question, but I was helping a friend who also has a moto g and a similar problem, and after we achieved nothing he just went with Droid Over Wifi as an alternative. Works pretty well imo, more reliable than mtp

Sphynxie, thanks for the link, will try it out.
By the way, I have since learned that this is how it works in Marshmallow:

Appreciate those links, that's some nice insight into Google's continued efforts to make file transfer over usb as awful as possible. IMO MTP isn't worth dealing with. My own phone got updated recently so I also switched to wireless solutions. Unless I happen on a pc without any wi fi access, I won't be using a cable anymore.

Recover pictures with broken screen. Please help.

My wife dropped her phone and the screen is now completely dead but the phone still works as it gets notifications etc. I enabled google back up a while ago but looking at her account it hasn't updated since March. This mean about 1/3 of my son's pic's will be lost forever unless I figure this out. I've tried everything I can think of and have searched for hours but I cant find anything useful. I think I have some driver issues on my PC on top of this as it wont connect to my Moto X PE with MTP and USB debug enabled with moto's device manager software installed. Please help. I'd pay if I need to at this point.
Did you enable the app Google photo's? If so, your photo's should be backed up on the Google photo's site (just Google) check that site first on your wife's Google account before doing anything drastic.

Maybe its too illogical but install twrp... Boot into it and try accessing your internal storage on PC from there as twrp supports MTP.

Hopefully Svanmansom's advice helped and the photos were backed up with the Google Photos app. If not, there are ways to access the phone without a working screen, provided the phone itself still works as you suggest. If your computer truly doesn't recognize the phone either no matter what you try (reinstalling the drivers, trying a different USB port, etc), and another computer isn't available, it may cost a few bucks. Here is a general list of possible solutions:
http://joyofandroid.com/cracked-or-broken-android-screen-recover-photos/
And if your phone is locked:
http://joyofandroid.com/unlock-android-device-with-dead-screen/
I hope you were already able to get the photos much more simply. Good luck.
Hi, I have an idea, you could try to use a MHL cable to conect your device to the TV, once conected get to the playstore, then dowload Airdroid and back up your photos to you PC directly. This is a theory. Good Luck! =)
Thanks all for the tips. I bought an MHL cable only to find out the 2014 moto x doesn't support mhl. I had photos back up enabled but it apparently hadn't updated since March causing this whole issue. So far I still can't get the 2 PCs I have easy access to even recognize it in device manager. That joyofandroid site is what got me thinking mhl only to find it doesn't support it. Very frustrating, there has to be a way.

2015 7" with broken screen, need to recover Minecraft files

So my daughter broke the screen on her Fire. It only displays white.
It was running one of the 1st compatible versions of SlimRom and I think I had left usb debugging on.
Does anyone have a good idea on how to get her Minecraft files off the device?
She had been building on it for two years and it was pretty advanced.
Thanks!!!!

If USB debugging is enabled you should be able to tether the device to view the files. Gotchas include:
- if a lockscreen is enabled adb/MTP will be blocked (security measure)
- a prompt may display if the host is not recognized which you won't be able to read and respond to
You may be better off buying a well enjoyed 5th gen model from an auction site and attempting a screen replacement.
I'll dispense with the usual backup guidance ...

Question Usb storage solution

Hello all.
I got stuck with the 128g model s21 ultra because they had no stock of any of the other sizes with tmo. Of course, now my trial period is up, they have the 256 in stock. -.-
Anyway. I purchased a T7 drive to use as supplemental storage since there are no options out there for SD cases for this phone.
Problem is, my note 10+, I miss it already, was able to pick the drive up and read it in the Gallery app. I was able to peruse the photos and vids on the t7 with no issue. The s21 gallery app refuses to acknowledge the drive exists.
Is there a gallery app that can be set to read usb storage as well? Or am I stuck with having to use the lackluster files app?
Thanks

What filesystem are you using on the T7?
To answer properly. I just formated the T7 drive using my phone. PC states it as exfat.
@gravija
You don't need OTG file mgr for T7. I use regular USB-C cable w/my S21U and as soon as I connect it to unlocked phone it shows that small 'read only partition'(pic1) then after unlocking T7 (w/fingerprint) it shows actual files on the drive (pi2>pic3).
You can also see the T7 in Device Care under Storage > 3 dots> Advanced > Storage(on the bottom)
All this is pretty much straightforward, firstly I would check everything on PC, make sure you have you password and fingerprint set and verify that you can access the drive on PC.
One more important thing, make sure you always unmount the T7 after using it w/ PC or phone.

Ouch. No way I trade my 10+ for something with less storage. Flash sticks are awkward... maybe use cloud storage. Not something I normally recommend... however.

I had no choice. My phone was almost completely unuseable with all the failed phone calls, both incoming and outgoing. Then the fact I could not get text messages to go out all the time. Tmo absolutely refused to replace my phone with the same model, saying the same problem will just continue. They also claimed they could not get the 5g variant of the 10+.

I got my t7 to show up now too. I had to format it using the formwat option and not use the samsung app. BUT, my main issue now if that the drive does not integrate into the OS at all. Seems to be all devices recently. I was looking to not have to use different apps, video players, file browsers... All just to view or edit the files between both internal storage and the t7 drive I am using.
Basically. I would like to find a single gallery that can see both my internal storage and external storage at the same time. As it stands now, I have to have a file browser to browse the T7 and then I need to use a different Gallery app and different Video app just to browse the files. In tune, I need to to have a Gallery for my internal storage, a video player, music player, photo viewer, and a browser just for the external drive.
Hook up yer t7 and browse to a video, try to play it from the t7 using the video player. The samsung video player will give you an error. Same with opening a photo and or music file. They will only work once transfered to internal storage.

The 4G variant streams movies fine. It's probably the more desirable variant because it uses the Snapdragon* chipset and doesn't suffer excessive battery consumption that the first generation 5G phones were notorious for.
The 21U is apparently suffering display blackout issues in some phones of this model. There's at least one thread on XDA about it. Samsung is being less than transparent about it.
*I may be mistaken but I think all the Snapdragon variants are 4G.

Yeah. Tmobile straight up lied about the availability of the 4g models. As I called sprint after the fact to have them fix my voicemail, which TMobile said there was nothing they could do to fix it on their end. (Sprint tech had it fixed in 10 minutes mind you.) Anywho. I had no issues with my note 10+ until I got on the Tmobile sim card. A sprint tower in my area went offline and I no longer had reliable service. Im a medical case and need to have a a phone for emergency calls. (No house phone.) Uhm sorry I am off topic.
Yeah. My s21 was not new. It is a remanufacted phone that was previously sent in for BSoD. It was cheaper than the new one monthly and I still got a sign on deal with it. I have to give Tmo credit for helping me there... But I also see it as them just doing retention work. If the phone fails again for black screen, like my friend, who is on his third s21+, I am going to ask for a different phone. This phone is nice, but not worth it over my note 10+. I am sick of this limited storage already. Having to keep an extra battery, carry around my portable storage and cable. The thing overheats constantly. I am also still having problems with RCS and text messages not working.
Now, in doing research into this recently I am finding out Google is apparently dropping support for apks now?

Well I use T7 as convenient way to transfer/piggyback/store files between S21U and desktop, the encryption is protected by the fingerprint sensor so, according to Samsung your files on T7 are encrypted and safe. When I plug it into pc or phone the fingerprint sensor lights up and to open the storage you have to match the enabled fingerprint. All that works fine as OTG storage but I also have Pixel phone and I can't use T7 with it because of different sf and that sucks, can't have the T7 OTG convenience to extract any files from Pixel w/o re-formatting each time the drive between fat32 and ntfs.
