Guide for those struggling with 'Adopt SD as Internal Storage' in Marshmallow - Android One (First-Generation) Cross-Device Genera

The first time you boot up your marshmallow device, you will receive a notification asking if you want to use your SD card as Internal or Storage. If you use storage its like any other external storage. But if you choose Internal, it will format your SD card to ext4 just like you would if you were to use Link2SD.
Now most of the apps will be stored on this SD card. However some won't and that's when you'll start running out of space. But that's not the case. Hidden inside is the option to move these apps to the SD card as well (along with the entire data and obb files). This is what you gotta do:
Go to Storage & USB
Go to Internal Storage
Go to Apps
Select the app
Select the option 'Change' and select your SD Card and then select Move from the 'Move Authenticator' and it's done!
Mind you, that the pre installed apps and the bloatware cannot be shifted this way. However it won't matter. you will still have around 900 MB free and even if the pre installed apps take up cache space there is plenty of space.
Enjoy!
Edit: Restart your phone after that otherwise the partition won't show up if you connect your phone to the PC.

How to access SD card contents?

As in?

To access contents for backup and restoring files. Furthermore only internal storage is accessable not SD card(mounted as Internal storage).

You can access files from pc

So far as I understand, one can only move data to the internal memory and then migrate that to the ext4 partition using the migrate data option. So yes, one can't move large files in one go as the max amount of free internal memory is around 800 MB., and will have to do in batches..
Edit 1: I realize you don't have to do that in batches if you restart your phone after migrating your data to the SD Card. The phone shows the entire partition on the Computer after you restart. Clearly, there is some clarification that Google must come out on this or most users will be left confused and frustrated.

Migrate Data
What does the option 'migrate data' do? It says it will take 10 minutes and free up 5.8 gigs of sd space.

Don't migrate from SD card to Internal else your storage will be full. Migrate from internal to SD. I think yours has already migrated to SD.

Yep, I had to reset my phone after that.
Are you facing unnecessary restarts? It started after I moved some apps to SD card.

Nope, haven't faced a restart yet. However I moved WhatsApp to SD and after it got an update it was automatically moved back to internal causing it to lose its chat history. Moving it back to SD let me restore my last backup though.

Yeah but I love how I don't have to wait for root to use Link2SD to install more Apps. It's more or less working quite well. Just a few annoyances like the migrate data issues. O too had to reset data after making that mistake.

Disregard my post. Found a solution.

Internal and external memory

hello
I can not use my phone's external memory. that it uses only internal sd, I do not know what to do to choose external (micro sd card) ??
It's really a big problem, please give me a solution because is for all O2X users.
App and download too, both is not possible on external sd. Because all new folders are create on "internal sd" limited at 6Gb.
Sorry for my English
I had to format my card in another phone to make my X2 see it. Try doing that and then reinsert it into the X2
No the phone see the external memory and his capacity but impossible to use that.
I see _ExternalSD in internalSD but no link between two memories, only for camera pics and videos saved direct in external.
You need a file manager like Astro File Manager to have access to it, at least as far as I have seen in videos. There u have a seperate folder for ur internal card too.
One year on Android i know Astro and other ^^
huuu there are two gps, one with europe and an other with belgium maps, when i move all this in external don't work
All vidéo and pics from cam are in external because easy to set in camera mode ....
My 32Gb is for what ? nothing? just for picture and video ?? Maybe yes pffffff System is not good ... i send an email to lg belgium to give me a solution because nothing in manual.
Well I dont have the phone yet, only telling about what I have seen in vids, and it actually looked really simple and all made sense.
It's normal. All Android phones with internal storage are the same. Navigators will work only in internal SD like backups and apps, but you can save photos and videos directly on the extsd. BTW the external memory can stores music photo and video, or any .apk ready to be installed .
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It's not possible i can use only 5Gb for maps, big roms, applications an other ??
I want to use microSD card by default to download big files, like movies, roms.
How to cut this s*** of internal memory ?
If you go to ConfigurationScreen > Micro SD and telephonememory,
what does it say under MicroSD ?
Total space ? ... GB
Available space ? ... GB
Possibility to decouple MicroSD ?
Or does it say:
Total space : Not available
Available space : Not available
Possibility to couple MicroSD ?

only 83mb in internal, if i need to download a big file 300 ... 700Mb i can't because the internal is full.
When i unmount internal, the external is automatically unmount too
I never see that, i want only rom memory and micro sd card
Well, I suppose you will download this megafile with your webbrowser.
You can select in your webbrowser the button "More" and then "Conguration"
Then you can select "Space for storage" , and you can choose between "Internal memory" (is default) or "MicroSD" (is external SDcard).
Yes i do that before and for applications rom files for playstation it's is very big too, what can i do ? (rom buddy, romfinder ...)
And applications need download data (there are a lot of games)
You mean that your Playstation - emulator doesn't find the rom files on your external SD-card ?
Absolutly correct.
The best smartphone in this moment... but memory system sucks
well this should be something that can easily be sorted out by the emulator dev
And apps needs more data ? Like gameloft ?

All Android phones with "internal SD" work the same, it is the only way.
App developers need to change their apps to support _ExternalSD because this is part of the Android specification.
Until app vendors update their apps you must use the 5GB for storage except:
You can change:
Music - _ExternalSD
Camera - _ExternalSD
Video - _ExternalSD
Browser downloads - _ExternalSD
And I think the 5GB that remains will be enough for everything else!

I'm having a hard time with my preferred podcast app. It does not support _ExternalSD yet. This is by far the most storage consuming app on my phone.
I have sent a request to the developer for an update.

[MOD]App2SD Script! - Use 64GB microSD for App Data on Note 10.1!

Here's App2SD Script you can use to "swap" your internal storage and microSD card storage space.
For example, if you have a 16GB Note 10.1 and use 64GB microSD card, applying this script will allow you to get 64GB for your apps instead of just 16GB.
When you first use the script, you might see missing app data. To fix this, simply copy the whole contents of your internal storage to microSD card beforehand (or you can do it after too). You can also use Titanium Backup app to backup apps/app data before using the script then restore your apps with data.
Now, you can enjoy 64GB easily without paying for it!
To disable the script, you can simply erase the file below using ES File Explorer with Root Explorer/Mount enabled in settings:
/system/etc/init.d/11extsd2internalsd
OR you can also disable the script by leaving your microSD card out during boot then plug it back in after booting.
Requirements:
- You will need a rooted ROM/kernel with init.d support (OR you can probably use Script Manager app to run the script at boot, I haven't tried this but let me know, it should work just fine)
- Works on ALL stock or TouchWiz based ROMs
- Works for ALL Note 10.1 including N8000,N8010,N8013
To install:
- Simply flash the zip file in CWM Recovery or TWRP!

Quick question:
I'm new to the whole Android roothing thing. When you say I need a rooted rom, does that just mean I need to root my device? As in, if I root my device but continue running stock TouchWiz, can I enable this mod?
Yes it should work with any rooted on stock tomorrow with script manager although I haven't tried. If you have trouble just install my rom.

After I already returned my 16gb and ordered a 32gb..lmfao should be here Thurs.
Greatwork though..it'll likely come in handy as I have tons of big games. This is good to have for offline map use also.
wouldn't the microSD be slower than the internal storage? Basically if you swap them then it would also maybe take longer to save/load files etc?
How are your experiences with this, do you recognize any differences? Maybe also do some benchmark tests comparing pre swap and swaped versions of your note.
I think this would help me consider using your method maybe it would help also others who aren't sure about it yet.
great work though!
EDIT:
I also have a second question: What happens if you take out the sd card? wouldnt it take out the "system" as it is on the sdcard storage due to the swap?
Ah OK let me see if I get this. What your script does is make my tablet see the external SDCard as if it is the internal memory and vice versa? So if I run this I need to basically just copy everything on my internal card to my external card?
Is the internal memory faster than the external if I have a Class 6 SdCard for instance? Will this cause lag in launching Apps?
And i guess we need to flash your rom so we have unit.d support for this to work?

Yes exactly, I don't really see much lag even with a Class 2 but I do recommend higher Class 6 just in case. You need a ROM with init.d support or kernel yes OR you can try using Script Manager app, I heard it works but haven't tried it.
I have always used a2sd on my phone so I am quite used to this all. But now that I have this and am looking to get a 64gb card I am starting to wonder if there is anyway to still utalize the 16gb that the device would have since it would be writing 90% to the card. I know a tiny amount still goes to the internal but I wonder if there is any way to pick and choose when you have so much space on either side.

Hi zedomax!
Thank you! Your trick is great!
I have just ordered the 16 GB version of this tablet today, not sure if I made the right choice, but here in my country the only version available at present is the 16Gb, with option for 3G or not (which I choose to tick).
Well, I'd like to know just a couple of things, of which I'm shure you have the answer:
- Why does the photo in your first post only show 32GB internal memory? Shouldn't these be 64?
- Are there any downsides (read/write speed in particular) in using a microSD card formatted as FAT32, instead of exFAT?
Hi Can I just confirm this - does this mean the Internal Memory is off limits to the device or just mean it becomes like the Ext-Memory right now (you can put your own stuff on there, but the system doesn't store apps on there).
Really disappointed that Android decided to stop the Move To SD option in Android!
Work well with 32GB microSD class 10. However, Task Manager's and camera's storage don't know the MOD. May be they use different path. Otherwise, this is awesome.

I found this page, because I had the same problem. (it's one of the first google results) And I want to leave this here, in case somebody else does, too.
After programming sd card to work as internal memory, so i could actually have some space in my phone, camera app started showing "error: memory unavailable".
None of the solutions here (or elsewhere) worked. Until i did a very simple thing.
I downloaded another camera app from playstore. All of them are taking pics normally and saving them where i want to. Problem solved. So, if anyone is on verge of buying a new phone, try that first.

[Help] Can't access sdcard from stock recovery.

Hey people!
I am kinda new to Android and have an I9070 with an official firmware (XXLQ4) I want to root it for tweaking purposes. But some problems came up:
Looks like my internal memory is located in /storage/sdcard, and the external memory is in /storage/extSdCard. However, when I boot into the stock recovery to flash a .zip, I select "apply update from external storage" and it shows me the contents of /sdcard.
Q1) Could you explain to me what these directories are?
Note that the SD card on this phone was previously on a SE x10 Mini Pro, which was rooted and running mini CM10, but I formatted the card before installing it on the I9070. There is still some folders in /sdcard is from my old phone, how can it still be there even after formatting the card?
Q2) How can I delete everything from the SD card, including the contents of the root?
In addition, I can't access my zip files since I have no way of navigating to /storage.
Q3) How can I access /storage/extSdCard so I can flash my .zip's?
Please tell me if I didn't explain my issue correctly, any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

Backup your SD card files and re-partition it (external one). Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
DO NOT do any of that , just format your SD card using your phone , settings/sd card and phone storage/unmount sd card , after unmounting is done format your sd card and then reboot and you can access your sd card in recovery mode .
(T stands for thanks button )
One way to access sd card files is to use an sd card data recovery software, you may download from: sd card recovery tutorial
It helped me last time.

Why does my phone say there isn't enough space to install an app when there is?

After shenanigans yesterday I've pretty much got my Moto G 2014 LTE running on Marshmallow.
\the problem I have now is one I've experienced a number of times before, on various devices and Android versions:
Why is it that, despite the storage screen showing that I have plenty of available space, am I not unable to install some larger apps?
Settings > Storage shows internal storage 1.15GB used of 5.52GB (as well as SanDisk SD card 890MB used of 14.59GB)
But when I try to install Injustice: Gods Among Us (1.12GB) i get the error message App requires external storage: "Injustice: Gods Among Us" can't be downloaded. Insert an SD card or USB storage with sufficient storage, and try again.
This app was installed prior to upgrading the OS, and while quite large, should still fit on to my device.
Can anyone tell me what causes this, what I can do to get round it, and also, if there is a way to make the OS see the SD card as part of the internal memory so I can install apps directly to it
On Marshmallow, it is possible to use external SD card as internal but don't do it.
Why ? Because you have a too small SD card. This option doesn't merge internal and external, it just sets the external as internal. So you need a 8gb or more SD card (or you will get less storage than before)
Maybe the play store doesn't want to install because your SD Card doesn't have enough space to install the game. I know it is weird, but sometimes even if you want to install to internal, it checks the SD card's available memory.
You can try to wipe the play store cache and data, and if it doesn't work do a wipe cache from recovery.
Try getting the apk file by google'ing it. Install it. Open it then check if it is downloading files or not.

Sorry that should have read 14.59Gb for the SD card, so loads of space

Tried to download the apk and it just days no SD card. I know its there, still shows up in settings and shows apps installed on it. Must be a dodgy card or something, but now i cant work out how to tell the phone to stop using it for apps and install internally unsteady (told it to use it as internal when I did set up, not sure how to go back)
EDIT: OK worked out how to get it to stop using the SD as internal and formatted it for data, and seems to be installing the game now. So I think that pretty much solves my immediate query, but still interested as to why android sometimes says insufficient space despite it reporting in settings that there is plenty

Yeah sorry for my mistake I have read 1.xxgb instead of 14.xxgb
Android reports the storage to be full as soon as XX% of the storage is filled (maybe 90%, I'm not sure). Then if you have a 100gb device, even if you have 10gb free it won't allow you to do anything.
That's weird, but that's how it works.
Have you tried wiping cache ? It sometimes solves the problem.
It is better not to use the format as internal storage except if you really know what you are doing.
