built-in permission manager? - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
So I was testing the GN5 and came across a built-in permission manager first thing. Didn't think much of it I mean yes it's a very nice feature and all but then after I had to return the phone, I looked for other references to it online but couldn't find any. It's not available on the Galaxy A8 that's for sure.
So I'm just looking for confirmation that it does indeed exist on every other GN5 out there..

Should've noted that down... but it pops up by itself either before or after download. Didn't need to set anything before hand. Will see if I can dig up the rom info too... it was a test unit for HK
Thanks

That's the only reason I miss aosp or root for. How do you get that? Is it third party app or what? Seems like test build samsung has around for android M update coming soon to note 5.

Does the phone runs on android 6.0 by any chance?

He probably came across a test phone of some sort - with Android 6.0
Android definitely needs something like this...
I hate downloading apps that need random permissions for things (Like a photo editor that needs to read my SMS messages) - It creeps me out and is just weird. I'm sure some permissions are innocent and others are malicious.
This feature will definitely help Android!

fail..... of all the screenshots I took I forgot to take one of the build info. is there anywhere on google that might store that? I already checked Play store.. that only remembers my model number.
on my GN5 it was built in. I was setting it up from scratch, installing new apps etc.

yup I was surprised to see it. I'll see if I can clarify with my PR contact...
I've got Android M on my Nexus 6 and that was pretty buggy. Samsung would've needed a miracle to put their touchwiz on it and maintain such stability at this time so that's highly unlikely.

I am pretty sure that ROM wasn't a 6.0 test rom, but just something Samsung cooked into the Chinese (and HK) ROM... already seen it in some Chinese N9200 before... Could be something unique to said variant, or could be something that can be triggered by change of build file...

S voice issues on Note 2

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with a strange issue. S-voice does not work for me on the GG using a recently updated (4.3 stock rom) Note 2. What I mean is that every time I try to use S-voice a highly distorted voice says "I didn't catch that", regardless of what I say. I tested the device on my gf's Note 3 and it works fine. As such, there are no issues with the GG device, per se. So, I continued to troubleshoot and figured it was my Note 2 S-voice that is the problem. I was thinking that since I installed the G4 s-voice, which worked fine on my Note 2, this might be the cause. I uninstalled S-voice on my phone and tried to run S-voice on the GG. The watch gave me a message stating I needed to install S-voice on my phone. When I looked at my phone it took me to the Samsung app store with the S-voice app ready to download. I installed the app from the app store on my phone and tried again. Same problem. I don't know how to fix this. So, I was wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue. Here is my info.
sgh317m (Canada)
Stock rom 4.3
rooted phone
official s-voice
If I forgot any pertinent details, please let me know.
Thank you everyone in advance.
Omg, same issue here, i317m on Rogers, stock rooted note 2, 4.3 and for the life of me s - voice doesn't work! Same exact issue! I thought I forgot how to s - voice lol!!

I'd be curious to know if you also loaded the S4 s-voice or have you always been using the default version? I noticed Samsung updated the app for the Note 2 in the app store, but I'm not sure if my upgrading unofficially may have cause any issues such, as no longer being a system file? I'm not sure. Such knowledge is beyond me.
Hopefully, a wise soul will enlighten us.
No s4 s - voice... Just stock note 2 s - voice. So, really, it should work as is. Apart from a complete Odin and reroot, I dunno.

Fair to assume you never had an issues with s-voice? I seem to recall when I first put s-voice on my SGS II I had a similar experience to current predicament, but I'm not sure what resolved it.
I've never had an issue at all with s - voice.

Hey guys... found this thread on Google. This was the only note 2 s voice issue with GG that I've found so it's reassuring (unforunately) that this is a common issue...
I have a stock note 2. No mods or anything... s voice does not work at all on galaxy gear. Works 100% brilliantly on the note 2... it's a garbled mess of "I didnt catch that" on the Gear. I've tried everything and I have no accent (just a normal Canadian, eh ; ) lol. ... but of the million commands I gave that are in the "?" Icon as legit 'things to say' it did not once do anything but say "I didnt catch that"....
...I hope Samsung is aware of this and fixes it... lol... I returned a watch and said it was defective already hahaha.

Hi I am using a Bell Note 2 with the GG and have no problems with s-voice but I am using the Skynote RC9z 4.3 custom Rom. I am interested to know is anyone on the stock bell having the issue? If so I could flash back to stock and see what happens. Also anyone on stock having issues with the GG weather app? mine keeps telling me to set the city on the device widget but it is set. Funny thing though when I ask svoice on the watch what the weather is like it has no problem telling me.

Mine is unlocked from Rogers and am using it on Koodo. Of course I installed the Rogers rom. My weather app works fine unless I use s voice.
I've been playing with the language settings (switching between Samsung and Google) and I got s voice to work 4 whole times but not successively. Maybe someone else could mess about as well?
I'm on bell. Stock note 2. S voice isn't working.
Im Glad that this is happening to a few people, as i was thinking my watch was defective -
I ended up calling SAMSUNG about this and they had no clue of course, so i explained 'our' issue and they have opened a case -

Defiantly going to make that call - I tested out my Galaxy Gear with my Wife's S4, worked no problem, so...it sounds more like a Note 2 issues.
Okayyyy... i talked to samsung Canada support... they said that they're aware of an issue with the 4.3 update. I had already mentioned that i returned a watch already. He made it clear "there's nothing wrong with your hardware... it was an error in the update" ... He said to wait a few days and call back, they'll likely have a solution or at least more information on a coming solution.

Edit: I mean anyone else besides the two who've already stated. I tried but the rep told me there aren't any issues and so he's not sure why I'm having trouble. Seems like each call gets a different reply. Was hoping others could chime in.
Just to be clear, I called the number below and ended up talking with some guy in the Caribbean.
Call Product & Customer Support
1-800-726-7864
8:30am – 12:00am midnight (EST)
Customer support is available 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.
He looked around and couldn't find anything pertaining to my complaint.
If you guys call and they have no idea, try referring them to the CASE # 2123030231 and see what they say -
I'm planning on calling back next week even though the rep told me not to expect anything to happen for at least a month or so.

Here's a fun fact. I called Samsung Canada today and the rep said he can't find that case number. He went on to say that there are no known issues with using the GG and note 2. Really brightened my day.

Ok I have now flashed a Rogers and a Bell stock on my note 2 both have the same issue s-voice sounds like its underwater and says it cant understand me but if I flash the SkyNote 9z custom ROM based off the AT&T 4.3 update the watch s-voice works just fine. I tried decompiling some of the relevant APKs and JARs and it seems that there are differences in the implementation of the Bluetooth.apk but flat swapping that file crashes BT services and I am not skilled enough to figure out how to correct the issue via programming.
I am headed back to SkyNote at least till they fix this.

I might be wrong but do you think this has something to do with 4.3 rom using LE BT whereas 4.1 had BT?
I was just curious what might happen if we installed the BT apk from 4.1. Would s voice work? Or am I way off?

[NOT SAFE TO FLASH!]First attempt at porting Android Wear to Galaxy Gear

Hello everyone!
This is my first attempt at porting Android Wear to the Galaxy Gear! I am not an experienced dev and this was done fairly quickly using null_23 as a base and the Gear Live system dump. This is not at all ready and definitely not ready to flash. If you do decide to flash it, you risk bricking your device. That being said, I am requesting that a more experienced dev check over my work. If it seems in order, then it will be tested, until such a time, test at your own risk.
Link: http://d-h.st/go2
UPDATE: [ONLY FOR BRAVE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN TESTING]: Since I used null_ as the base, the addons are still available, but please do not flash any of them! And use the stock kernel for the time being!
UPDATE 2: It might be a good idea to try using the custom kernel we have available to us. If I can get an updater script from the gear live or other android wear device and look in to modifying the bootclasspath in the preexisting custom kernel that we have.
UPDATE 3: I have figured out how to modify the bootclasspath, will make the modification shortly. I just need an updater script for an android wear device and we may have a booting android wear port.
UPDATE 4: Link to Attempt 2 coming soon. This has a modified updater script that will hopefully set all permissions correctly. This may be all it needs to boot properly. If not, then I may still need some help getting the Gear Live Kernel to modify our kernel's bootclasspath. If anyone would like to flash this, same as before, I can't guarantee anything will work or that your device will work afterward.
Link: AWAttempt2.zip
UPDATE 5: added my slightly modified updater files from fomey's null_ ROM attached at the bottom. fomey, if we get this working, could you package it in to null_ as a second ROM option?

Thank you for testing so quickly! I'm glad it did not cause any serious issues to your device. I will do some talking with some devs I know and see what I can get worked out. Porting to the 1 will actually be easier than to the 2 or Neo, since there is an android base for the 1, unlike the 2 and Neo which are Tizen only.
Do you have a change log? If this is based on Null, it's still 4.2, while the wear launcher, if I remember correctly, requires a newer version of Android, probably 4.4. Just curious what your plans are to deal with that. Seems to me the only real options are either editing the wear app or porting 4.4 aosp and hoping the launcher works. Theoretically, the gear live dump could be ported but the major difference between cpus makes it a much more difficult task than people originally hoped. I think the best chance would be if a dev team (ie CM) were to pick up the protect, but there's the downside to a large bounty: there's a lot of people wanting to go it alone for the cash.
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Trust me, I'm not doing this in an attempt to get the bounty. The money doesn't interest me at all. As far as the change log goes, this is the absolute first attempt, so there hasn't been anything changed yet. So again, this was a quick attempt in an effort to get the ball rolling and get the community involved in the development.

No worries, I didn't think you were. You didn't have the typical billion "Donate please!" links that they would.
But what does first attempt mean? Just null kernel and modules with gear live system folder? I know a little about these things so I'd like to take a look, mostly out of curiosity, so I'd like to know what you've already done, preliminary as it is.
I agree though, we needed some kind of thread started and I agree that it's too early to put anything in the development forum.

Not just a swapped out system folder. the base of the null_ system folder is still there. I only migrated the things necessary for a standard port. The only issue is that there is no ROM for the gear live yet, so a proper permissions section is not available for me to port from the updater script of the live to the updater script of the galaxy gear. I'm pretty convinced that if someone with a little more knowledge than myself edited the updater script permissions section to set the proper permissions for the new files, that this would at least boot.

In the pictures he wirtes "This is not for the watch"
And later on "(1) Watch will become android 4,4,2"
Does he know what he is selling or not?
When he says "This is not for the watch", I think he means that you are not buying the watch in the picture. That is, you are not buying the physical watch, just the software upgrade.
I think it is high risk when you send your watch to him.

RevengeDevTeam: I have not necessarily classified this as a ROM, since it currently doesn't boot. That's why this is listed in the general thread. I am working on it, but there are no guarantees right now.

MIUI EU vs MIUI stock

Hello,
What differences are there between MIUI EU and MIUI stock?
Less bloatware (is it really that bad? )
It's nice to have google stuff built in, but it's fairly easy to install anyway.
What else?
I'm wondering if it's really worth the trouble to switch to MIUI EU, if I can root the stock ROM anyway.
All of the reviews say the Mix is quite snappy, I'm wondering if all the lags/etc are caused by the MIUI EU rom?
Not sure if you read my posts on here complaining about the lags or not. But it sounded like you might have lol.
I was on EU ROM for about 3 days, and the user experience wasn't all that great at all. Snappy is the last word I would use to describe my experience with it. I'm switching to China Dev ROM, and I will see how well it runs on the Mi Mix comparing to EU ROM. Do note at the EU ROM is in very early stage, weekly build for Mi Mix has been suspended for 2 consecutive weeks. I'm sure EU ROM has a lot to bring in the near future. As of right now, I think I'm sticking to the stock ROM.

I had the same issue as well.
It feels buggy. I didn't face any lags when I was on the Chinese rom, but the eu rom seems to have some issues at the moment.
I had multiple freezes as well as slow downs.
---------- Post added at 08:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:15 PM ----------
Also, When I received my phone, the seller installed multi-language rom. It's not the eu rom.
I think they just enabled other languages on the Chinese rom, and It worked great.
Reverted to the twrp backup and its much smoother.
I'm the opposite of you guys. EU dev Rom was better for me than the China stable Rom. On CN, Play Store download lagged, time was not always correct due to locale always reverting back to China even though I set to a different country and had to turn off Auto Time Zone. I had issues downloading and being unable to set wallpapers and lock screen. The only way I could change it is by changing the themes.
But with EU dev, I didn't have any of those issues.
I would consider reflashing the EU dev to see if it helps or not but up to you.

Same here, had play store already on too. Everything worked great, left localization to China as nothing else seemed better and language was already English. The built in weather app didn't work but no biggy. What got me though, was being a Google Voice user I could set it to make all calls with GB - if I did calls would start with the dialer coming up but then immediately closing. Only worked for calls with GV set to not make any calls. Had to let it go.for this reason but if euro ROM doesn't have this GV making calls issue (can anyone try and advise) I would get another.

I was going to stick w/the Global MIUI,as I'm not having performance issues (Phone/Messaging/G-Mail/Data/WI-FI all excellent).
I wouldn't even mind the Xiaomi/MIUI Bloat if I could disable most of it,namely the built-in CleanMaster malware.
The memory management seems a bit aggressive as well, regarding recent apps, regardless of app/system settings.
Can the Xiaomi/MIUI/CleanMasterbloat be disabled on the stock/unrooted (?) EU ROM,or,is TWRP/ROOT (SD Maid/TI-Bu) the only solution?
I was able to disable the memory manager and clean up stuff, also some utility that seems to make you confirm permissions for apps over and over. Mine was China ROM with multi-language support added.

Which utility are you talking about? The one that ask for NFC permissions? I'm looking how to disable that.
One thing to add regarding EU rom is that BT is working properly now as before with CN rom, BT would take so many attempts just to connect. Now with EU, it connects automatically instead of me continuously trying to get it to connect. One thing I do miss is having wifi calling but I'll get over it.
I wasn't able to disable system apps until I installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.namelessrom.devicecontrol&hl=en
I found that app after googling it, http://www.ghacks.net/2016/04/11/remove-system-apps-from-xiaomi-devices/
Yeah, perhaps - if memory serves it was always asking for NFC permissions bit I think it did so with others.

I found it weird but didn't think nothing of it until recently. Been trying to figure out how to disable the NFC permissions on apps and I looked at apps permissions to see if i can turn it off but only saw: Contacts, Location, Phone and Storage.
Sorry, can't recall specifically but I think if you go in through their cleaner utility you can turn it off there.

Thanks, found it in Settings > Permissions > Other permissions.
Definitely gonna open a Xiaomi account here in a few minutes, gonna have to unlock/root/install the EU ROM,the memory management has seemingly went from bad to worse, turning off Google Play Music repeatedly, only keeping 3 apps in recents & having to manually connect my Gear S2 on every boot.
The latter two I can tolerate, especially the Gear S2,as it stays connected once I force/manually do so within the Gear Manager app.
But,the constant interruption of Google Play Music is not cool.
Seems MIUI is the mess I've been reading about for years, some of it is nice but, that Clean Master garbage keeps opening up stuff I don't want (Browser) & closing the things I actually use.
The settings seem redundant as for memory management/permissions: too many cooks in the kitchen.

Yeah its a mess, I had to go in there and manually set everything, I did set apps not to suspend like Play Music and others though. The best part of MIUI is its constant updates if you're into using MIUI, if you're into using stock. Hopefully, there will be devs creating ROM's for this phone soon.
I'm really liking this phone and I'll grow use to MIUI but I do miss the SPEN and TW calendar app though, lol.

Yours may have been the one post I saw regarding looking for the unlock on verdor-installed Global ROM & which prompted me to check, mine was unlocked as well.

custom Rom or not?

I just replaced the Google Pixel 2 xl with Note 9
So far, I like this phone.
I'd like to ask you guys, if it would be worth to root the phone and install a custom ROM / kernel
I can't see a percentage for the brightness, which is annoying, and the clock is on the left, I'd like to have it centered or on the right
With a good kernel, would it help to improve the battery life?
Thank you very much, in advance, any advices are welcome
With Samsung once you root and trip Knox you can't go back to stock - ever. And some apps will not work anymore. This is actually my first phone where I haven't seen any need for root anyway.
Take a look at good lock, with it you can customize allmost everything, incl. clock postition.

latest july build seems to have decent battery without the need to root.
also using samsung goodlock and its various components, you will be able to do a lot of stuff that were only possible on a rooted device. such as move clock position and much more UIwise.
for brightness % sorry never seen that.
so play around with all the goodlock addons 1st and see if its worthing staying on stock. as you know rooting will kill Spay...so
( i can never stay on stock since its much to fun to flash roms every now and then)
What exactly is good lock?
Where do can I find this app? @Bober, I always had a percentage on the brightness, on the Pixel 2 xl ( root / custom Rom)
There must be a way for this
Thank you, guys

goodlock can be found on the Samsung store.
there is also an alternative called nicelock in the guides forum.
basically goodlock in it self is nothing but a downloader/manager or various plugins. they are the ones that modd the system.

for what?
to install goodlock? if you dont see it in the samsung store then try:

sometimes apps are available by region. so using nicelock should bypass this.

im dealing with theis question myself, i have a korean version - n960n and im having some network connection problems ( i live in midle east which has different bands), and the super late updates from samsung for this model, im still in April security update.
other than this i really dont see the need for root-custom rom for my phone.
i will wait till the end of this month and see.

you should be on may release. manually download it and flash it with Odin.
I'm in the same boat here and am quite surprised by it. I ALWAYS root my phone, first thing, asap. I specifically bought the exynos version of the N9 so I could root. But after playing with it I find myself wondering why I need root.
Ad blocking - kind of miss this but using Brave browser mostly fixes that.
Customization - GoodLock is AWESOME. Takes place of rom customizations and Tasker, which was a must have for me.
Call recording seems to work, which it didn't on my Pixel.
Get to keep Samsung pay, which is much better than Google pay. And secure folder is a lot better than the name suggests, since it provides doubles if apps allowing multiple active logins.
Someone convinced me why I need to root this phone??

to have fun with it and try new things. ( i get bored fast and quickly want more)
if you want to use the phone within the allowed parameters and not want anything more than you already have, than don't root. because the 1st thing happens when you root is that knox fuse gets tripped and apps relying on the device's security integrity will stop trusting it and fail to work. but apart from S pay you can get prety much all apps working one way or an other on a rooted phone just as a stock one would.( lately secure folder was found to work! thx dr
.ketan). people have turned to google pay instead of S pay.
but i do understand that its like: why break what's not broken?
some of us like the freedom and ability to do more. its not essential but since we own the device i guess our though process is what can we do to get even more out of this device.( price is not cheap so we need a reason to justify having bought it guess and have our money's worth ! lol )
but it is true. with good lock the visual aspect that was once one of the big reasons of rooting is now less and less of a reason. same goes with themes as well. nice alternatives to the stock themes and store bought ones like the wonderfull app: #hex ( xda made! search for it here and on playstore) allows you to theme. it has slimmed the gap even more between the need to root and not having to.
one aspect though that is important is being able to remove content and aslo add content like unsupported region carrier specific features eg:CSC , i put canadian CSC on my n960n.( somewill argue rhat if i had bought the canadian variant i would not need to do this. but the other reasons outlined in this message outweighs this.)
all in all im happy with my decision. and i have no trouble understanding that you or others are also quite happy with not having rooted.
what is good is that rooting has put pressure and have given samsung and other device companies examples and insight on what the community wants. by rooting and modding the device we show exactly what we need/want. and the result ( goodlock and other additions) that are aosp inspired has really made the device shine and be an attractive experiance to the general public and rooted user alike.

I've definitely rooted a bunch of phones. Every phone in my signature that could be rooted, and many friends phones etc. I've been a huge proponent of root. This phone just seems to not need it, at least not yet at this point. When sammy stops pushing updates in timely manner I will probably reconsider.
You are absolutely right that root, and the xda community in particular, has really pushed OEMs to make things better. Its great progress.

I'm not a traitor

As the title says I have gone into the Chinese forums to look for ROMs. Since Dr. Ketan, The galaxy project, ambasadii left the development of their rom I had no choice but to look into a different forum to get my flashy needs for my note 9. So I currently have to ROMs which I already have in my mega cloud, the one that I am currently using is called Norma rom which I found on a Chinese site! Here's the site https://normaq.github.io/2019/03/29/ROM-9-0-SM-N960F-DS-SM-N960N国行特性官方SC1增强设置三卡支持V1/
It has all the note 10 apps, smooth ui, great battery life and I'm satisfied with it even though I've been using it for the past 2 days only.
There's another rom from this site which I haven't tried yet but will get to it eventually, you can download it from here http://bbs.gfan.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=9613602 and there is another really popular rom on this site too but I cannot make a username for it because it needs a Chinese phone number but if anyone can get one please update me!
Use Google translate for these sites, it works for me and I hope you guys can find something useful out of this.
