Updating Nightlies and Snapshots of CyanogenMod Help - Moto G 2014 LTE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm still quite new to using custom ROMs so sorry if this seems like a stupid question.
What I'm using:
Moto G 2014 LTE (Thea) XT1072
TWRP (latest version)
CyanogenMod Nightly from 26/09
I want to easily update to the latest nightly or even the recent snapshot of CyanogenMod. However I've tried dirty flashing the latest nightly and it gets an error during the flash process. I'd rather not do a fresh install as this clears all my settings and logins for apps. Is there an easy way I can update? Also I was wondering what the cyanogen recovery img files are used for.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

What's the error? Also don't flash snapshot on top of nightly.

Is there a way I can do a clean flash without losing any settings? I use TitaniumBackup to backup apps but I'm not sure if backing up apps + system data will work?

Update
Hello All,
Files are now up
Ggow much appreciated that safetrap version is coming back!
Just to clarify that this rom will work with devices that got upgraded to 4.5.2 and then downgraded by ACS to 3.2.7/8 and rooted with safetrap working.
Here are some questions that I'm sure people will be curious about:
- I'm currently on 2.0.2 and root checker says root is enabled, but couldn't find the supersu app. How does it work? Do i need to flash supersu?
- Can you install xposed with modules on this version? For example to mod notifications bar, status bar, power menu, etc.
- can I safely upgrade from the older 2.0.2 to this version?
- what about addons like the dolby digital? I assume its safe to flash too?
- current build.prop ids the device as Nexus HDX and tgere are a lot of apps on play store that are not compatible with the device, but they work just fine installed from another market (say 1mobile). Can we do something about it?
Sorry for so many questions, but i tried reading most stuff from the other thread but for some reason search in thread is disabled (no idea why).
Cheerz!
Awesome, thanks!!!

Correct, yes.

The ROM is pre-rooted with the su binary and a daemon. SuperSU is a root manager so its up to you if want that functionality.
- Can you install xposed with modules on this version? For example to mod notifications bar, status bar, power menu, etc.
Yes you can.

Yes

Yes

No matter how I modify the build.prop, google play store ends up not playing nice. So no not at the moment. Market helper used to work for this problem but seems to but patched now on googles servers.

OK, I updated and flashed all gapps and addons. Everything works!
Then I tried installing Xposed Framework, and on reboot the result was black screen after rom bootup (right after android animation). Waited like 2-3 minutes, but nothing. Then had to force reboot it via power button. After reboot everything works again with Xposed installed. No idea what happened. Any guidelines on where I can check logs probably.
havent tried any module yet, but it would be nice if we keep a list of compatible and safe modules.
Question: can any of the xposed modules trip eFuse or break stock kernel (as rom is running on top of it) or safetrap makes it safe so any changes to system would be just to the slot rom?

Use this verison of Xposed found here.
Try Gravitybox (JB).
I don't know if any of the modules can trigger the efuse. You are correct, in theory Safestrap makes it so that any changes should only occur in that slot.
So far this ROM has been excellent. Great job and thanks a lot!
I have the problem, that there is no Play Store and I can't install downloaded applications. I downloaded applications through the browser and when I try to execute them I get the error "can't open file". So I can literally install no app. I tried to install ES File Explorer and gapps pico.
Anyone else who had this problem or knows how to solve it or has some ideas?

Hi GGow, I'm a complete noob to the scene, have searched around the forums. Finally got Safestrap 3.75 and SuperSU working on my Amazon Kindle Fire HDX that was downgraded to 13.3.2.8 by ACS from 4.5.2. Utilized the TowelRoot method to get rooted.
I want to make sure the installation procedure for this ROM, since I've never done one. Currently I utilized SafeStrap 3.75 and backed up my stock 13.3.2.8 ROM on the device.
The process to install this ROM would be -
1. Flash safestrap-thor-nexus-rom.zip or safestrap-apollo-nexus-rom.zip
2. Flash hdx-nexus-gapps-v1.2.zip
3. Then flash any addons
4. If coming from any other ROM then do a factory reset.
5. Reboot and enjoy.
My only issue is that do I flash all of these roms like the safestrap-thor-nexus-rom.zip onto seperate slots? Or keep re-flashing the same slot? I apologize for my noobness, but I'm really new to Android Dev and rooting.

To add to what @gqukyo said:
1. If you intend for HDX Nexus ROM to be your main ROM and because you are on 13.3.2.8 I would make sure you take a backup of your current stock ROM.
2. Restore the backup to slot 1 . Ensure slot 1 then boots correctly
3. You can then switch back to your stock slot and follow the instructions above.
4. Otherwise if you want stock to be your main ROM then just follow the instructions as they are above after creating a new ROM slot.

Ha! I didn't even think to use the "stock rom" for any custom roms... I don't suppose it really matters does it? I did create the max 16gb for my rom slot though I did hear about people having issues installing games when it complained device didn't have enough space... if it does matter then I'd rather use the stock slot since there doesn't seem to be any other roms to try anyways.

I don't think he ment to replace your stock slot with custom rom.
I was wondering why would i restore stock backup to slot 1? Is this just to verify if backup works? Can i later remove it from slot 1.
It would take too much space to have a stock and slot 1 as stock and then slot 2 for nexus.
Fyi you can safely install Xposed 2.7 experimental and then activate gravitybox, and other aosp modules.

hey since this is running lollipop amazon os. cany you guys make a costom rom like the hdx developers do that can be booted without unlocking the bootloader. they use safestrap which is like twrp but for locked bootloaders and install custom roms. they arnt fully custom they have amazon aspects that let it boot with the locked bootloader but it is almost fully custom the hdx has a nexus rom and a cm11 rom they made for it.

Not as easily as it they were installed.
Use a root file manager, to delete or rename or move.
Use titanium backup pro or similar app, to freeze google apps
you freeze all google apps, and see if performance improved, them unfreeze google apps one at a time to see which ones are causing issues.

Help and Advice for First Time Attempt at Rooting

Hello XDA community, I am a 100% new noob who is interested in getting started with rooting. I am going to get right to the point with what I am working with, what I have done, and what I need some help with. May my journey with lovely pictures be a helpful guide for all those who follow me (I find it is easier to understand things with lots of images).
Used this thread to begin my journey on rooting an old Nook HD tablet.
Started with a factory reset but it automatically updated according to my settings page, so one of my question is; does it matter what software version my device is running before I root it?
Followed instructions in PeteInSequim guide and created an 8 GB Micro SD Card with all the files.
Green = CM-12.1_Installation_20150925 Instructions PDF
Light Blue = Files from NookHD-bootable-CWM-6046-for-emmc-BOOTFILES-rev0-(07.13.14)
Red = CyanogenMod 12.1 (No official release on their website)
Orange = ClockworkMod_Recovery (Couldn't find website for other versions)
Yellow = TWRP Recovery (They may have a newer version)
Purple = TK-GAPPS (Which I downloaded the STOCK package, and am not sure if that is compatible)
This is what I have done so far, and would like advise on what I should do before I advance, specifically around the TWRP VS. CWM with relation to the GAPPS packages. In the tutorial (PDF), I believe they use the CWM to install TWRP, I think TWRP is better and is the only of the two who will support my GAPPS package, but would like someone to help clarify so I don't make a permanent mistake. Also, should I use newer versions of anything? Should I even be attempting CM-12.1 if it is not officially supported? I don't want to have to keep making changes and not changing backgrounds or settings... should I go for the more stable CM-11, if so would I have to completely change my process?
Thanks for the help,
Buckaroo9
I'm a bit lazy when it comes to installing incremental releases, so I prefer to do simple "dirty installs". This means re-flashing without wiping the old installation, which can be done in seconds with no consequences.
But a dirty install will probably fail if you have made user-interface changes, even if you try to reverse out those changes before flashing. You can still install revisions any time you wish, but you must do the wipes first. This means you will have to go through the set-up procedure all over again, which takes a lot longer than a dirty install.
CM-12.1 for our Nooks should eventually be offered among the official nightly releases, and hopefully a milestone release now and then. I might consider UI tweaks after installing one of these, then settle down for a long quite period of no more updates.
If a stable CM-12.1 ever happens, we'll all be installing CM-13 by then.

Could you please explain this concept slightly more to me? How much would I be able to change and what would the consequences be? If I make changes would I always have to do a clean wipe, would that mean I would have to not make changes and constantly wait for updates? This uncertainty is kind of pushing me away from rooting...

The files you got look right, although I'd recommend using the smaller micro or even nano GApps packages as you can always add more apps later on.
Just use CWM to flash TWRP first, then boot to TWRP to wipe /data and flash CWM and GApps.

CM12.1 for the HD/HD+ is not officially supported and, more importantly, is no longer enhanced/maintained (its original developer has recently moved onto CM13). I've been using CM12.1 for about a month now: the apps' performance can be noticeably more snappy but not consistently so, on the downside couple of apps/features that used to work on CM11 no longer work.
If you're looking for a reasonably newer but stable CM version, I'd suggest you try CM11 (either M12 snapshot or one of the recent "nightly" releases).

I am definably leaning towards more stable, but in your opinion, what features would I loose from CM12 (Android 5.0 Lollipop)? Someone made a good point that, the most advanced, newest, and coolest software will always be unstable. You have to trade off the cutting edge for reliability and support.
As a new member to rooting, I think I may start with more stable things, and then work my way up.

The TWRP flashable zip file you have contains a TWRP image that is compiled for internal EMMC. Once installed, it can be used to flash CM, GApps, or another version of CWM or TWRP to replace itself.
To flash from SD you need to find and use a TWRP recovery image that is compiled for SD.

You can use a Zip archive program like 7-zip to open up and browse the content of these GApps zip packages to see and compare their particular mixes of apps.

This depends on your particular use and choice of apps for the tablet, but as examples, the Hulu app and USB Host feature which work on CM11 don't work on CM12.1.

Since this was originally posted, many people have now used flashfire with each of the roms. Search around to see confirmation that it works.
Rom = CM12.1 . Since the OP was asking about CM12.1.
How did you read anything about xposed here? The original question made zero mention of xposed.

Since this was originally posted, many people have now used flashfire with each of the roms. Search around to see confirmation that it works.
Rom = CM12.1 . Since the OP was asking about CM12.1.

Youre correct. Not sure how i posted here. Remember i began a title asking about xposed and a thread popped up that mustve seemed relevant. My best guess, i got distracted and posted in the wrong place.
-I've tried xposed with flasfire on 12.1, ressurection, and fire nexus. All worked fine. Since then i got 5.0.1 so I can try mods with more confidence.
Dirty flash possible, when going from SlimLP to CM12.1

Yes, it should work fine.
Wipe dalvik cache, cache, data and system. Then flash the rom.

I'd like to change from SlimLP to CM12.1.
(Reason is: Anki Overdrive does not work 100% with SlimLP. The app can be startet and works fine until the track should be scanned. Unfortunately the cars do not start scanning after pushing "Scan Track". Now I'm going to give CM12.1 a shot as Anki should work with Fire-Tablets. At the moment I can't use it as host.).
Probably I'll use TWRP to flash the CM12.1 ROM (SuperSU and Gapps). My Question is:
Can I keep data, and just wipe system, cache and dalvik before flashing CM12.1?

- I don't recommend the use of FlashFire with CM-12.1 until issue with random soft-bricks and/or loss of access to stock recovery partition are better understood
- If you have TWRP option then layering CM over SlimLP should present no issues.
- Whether data partition contents can be preserved is unknown. In theory should be ok; make a backup first.
- If you decide to risk FlashFire recommend sideloading FireOS as an intermediary step
5.1.1 cannot use TWRP. Only option is FlashFire in order to install custom ROMs.
For what I know, the issue with CM12 bricking the device is because people did not place the "wipe" in the top of the order. Read and follow the instructions careful.

Position of wipe in the operations sequence is certainly important (for any ROM) but not the magic bullet. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/help/amazon-fire-stuck-cm-logo-t3347629/post66102825

Here are the full factory firmwares if you need to go back to stock:
https://mega.nz/#F!ow8igZRL!Z7vmN8GOpez2bVMYDvEKkg
Which Gapps did you use? You might have the wrong versions for your ROM.
Delta Gapps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-minimal-gapps-gapps-lp-20150107-1-t2997368
Open Gapps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/pa-gapps-continuation-t3098071
You should probably clean flash your ROM, and the latest Gapps (make sure you flash MarshMallow Gapps on a MarshMallow ROM).

I did use the Standard gapps. the one that said "take this if u are not sure which version u need"
i Installed a new ROM. but it drains a lot of my Batterie... dont know why.
Also i cant really root it. Everytime i try to Update SuperSU# it fails.
Can u tell me a good ROM i could use? or can i go to original somehow while having my Phone rooted?

If you go back to stock factory firmware, you will lose root, but I'm sure there are ways to root it, but I've never done it on stock, so I don't know what works.
But, CM based ROMs should already have root built-in, under Developer Options, Root Access for Apps and ADB.
I prefer CyanogenMod because it is always actively being developed and updated, and is well supported.
Right now CyanPop looks like a good one, although I've never tried it (should already have root)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/rom-cyanpop-v4-5-t3277786
Actually that is the version that i have. I installed that and Gappa "ARM" 6.0. Dont know what i choose in the last section anymore.
Since i installed it i have the problem that the Batterie gets empty pretty fast.. and also i get Errors like "Couldnt load E-mail services" or something like that.
Also i cant update SuperSU#, update always fails
I want to clean install it again, not sure tho what gapps i should use.

I'm not sure what you would like to do.
There's a new version of TWRP (3.0.0) for Moto X 2014 Victara, you should flash that using fastboot in bootloader mode.
https://dl.twrp.me/victara/
If you want to start over clean, to flash a ROM and Gapps:
THIS WILL WIPE EVERYTHING!
Boot into Recovery, and tap Wipe, then Advanced, then select:
Dalvik/ART cache
System
Data
Cache
Then swipe to wipe them.
Copy over the ROM and Gapps zip files from your computer to your internal storage, if you haven't already.
Tap Install and flash the ROM, then tap clear cache/dalvik
Tap Install again and flash Gapps, then clear cache/dalvik
Reboot system and don't install supersu

i already wiped everything last time, thats why i want to do it again to be clean.
what u said here:

is not nessesary if i want the clean install, right?
But i still dont know which Gapps i should get. I get Errors in my Current ROM, and i think its because i choose the wrong Gapps.
Also, the TWRP 3.0.0 u recommended, is it a stable Rom?

TWRP is a custom recovery not a ROM, it allows you to flash ROMs and Gapps.
Right now, the only Gapps that are being constantly updated are Open Gapps and Delta Gapps, they both support MarshMallow, and don't have any serious issues. I use Delta Gapps with CM because they allow you to flash only the apps you want, or replace some of the CM stock apps, if you prefer the Google versions.
Here are the different Open Gapps packages, and the apps they contain:
https://github.com/opengapps/opengapps/wiki/Package-Comparison
If your ROM is MarshMallow then use the Delta Gapps under MarshMallow.
DO NOT MIX GAPPS, use either Delta Gapps, OR Open Gapps, but not both.

That looks like stock factory firmware, you don't need Gapps for it. You only flash Gapps with custom ROMs, because they don't include the Google Play Store and Services (Google doesn't allow it). Which model and region is your phone?

Serialnumber is TA99300WN5.
Dont know what region the phone is from, im from GER.
U said its a stock recovery, does that mean root is not possible?
Do a clean install of your ROM (cyanpop--which tells you clearly not to install SuperSU) with full wipes as per the ROM instructions. Add 'Open Gapps arm 6.0 full'. Follow the instructions.
Or
Read the various guides in Tony Stark's sticky thread for installing the stock ROM (if you're in Germany then it'll be for an xt1092*) and rooting a stock ROM, make sure you understand them, and then do as they say.
Gus has given you several very straightforward and helpful answers and you need to do some real brainwork to make sure you understand what you're doing. I'm sure you'll manage it and learn from it, as we all have.
* you have to check the model of your phone.

Okay, i did 3 things now..
First i installed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/install-image-marshmallow-6-0-xt-1097-t3266858
i just followed that tutorial. But when i started my phone, i couldnt open the most apps, they just closed with the Erro message e.g "Whatsapp closed".
Then i tried to install the stock ROM. i was on Tony Starks sticky, and just followed the tutorial. But after flashing the stock ROM into my device, i couldnt reboot it. It just booted into fastboot.
So i tried the Method one again and installed the ROM again. now i can open APP's, but cant get a mobile connection... so no calls and no SMS
I dont know whats wrong, always diffrent errors with diffrent trys...
You are having problems because you seem to be flashing the stock image for an xt1097 onto what I guess is an xt1092.
I was clear about checking phone models and being sure you understood the different instructions and guides.
Start again and make sure you have the right things. I assume you made no nandroid backups to return to.

With the new ROM i can see that i have XT1092. The old one just showed me "Moto x 2014".
This is the one i have atm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/rom-cyanogenmod-13-t3243768
There was no saying that it is for specific models, so my guess was that it works for all.
I tried to get the Stock Image via this tutorial : http://techbeasts.com/2014/11/11/how-to-restore-moto-x-2014-to-stock-firmware/#
Since i tried that i cant get a mobile connection with various ROM's, just WLAN workds atm. Also on that tutorial i searched if it was restricted to a Model that i dont have, but there seem to be none...
its not that i wasnt looking if it works for my model..
aI dont have a nandroid back up too
Well okay, i downloaded the Android 4.4.4 from Motorolas original site for my Phone. unrootet and than flashed it on my Phone.
Now everything is working fine. I dont like this old version tho. How do i get OTA updates? shouldnt he tell me that updates are available?
Well done! You'll probably not get updates with an unlocked bootloader, but this German site might help: http://www.android-hilfe.de/thema/factory-images-ota-4-4-5-0-5-1-6-0-retdeall-xt1092.703838/

Unlocking the bootloader does not effect getting updates.
