[Q]Play Movies/TV with Root? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
So, I have been away from Android for a bit (not my choice ), and it seems that I am unable to play movies and tv show from Google Play if I am rooted, or even using a permissive kernel. I just get the try again later, restart, blah blah error. Is this the norm nowadays? I googled/searched XDA and only found a thread about the HTC M8 where this was discussed (with no solution other than rootcloaker). I thought Google had had stopped that a while back?
Any informed input appreciated, as I like to use my own ROMs/kernels. I will logcat/dive deeper if no-one knows, and see how far that gets me...
Thanks!
Steve

I have never used Google Play for music or movies but I was wondering if you could still install apps or use gmail. Curious if its related to account. I'm sure it would be mentioned more often if it was a common problem , so very possible a setup issue!?

I am thinking along the same lines, as a search turned up basically nada, but I just wanted to rule out the obvious. Thanks!

Sure. You could always try a kernel or rom from the development section as a test and narrow it down. Wish I knew more of the inner workings, but still learning. hope you get it back on track. Its a very nice device.

Same problem on the S2. However, play books and music work great. Let us know if you discover anything, please?

Okay. Just restored this tab to stock. Google play movies worked fine. Then redid the root process and Google play movies don't work. Did some searching and apparently root breaks google play movies. Anyone?

I'm having the same issue... also couldn't get hulu to play anything. Twitch and Netflix work fine.. google play and hulu, no bueno. My Nexus 6p is rooted though and it plays hulu and google play movies just fine... so it's not necessarily root.. it's something with this tablet and root.

Suggested in the T917T Root thread: if you're running Xposed, give root cloaking a shot.

I think you're correct. I have a rooted LG G4 and play movies works fine on it. I'll see if I can get exposed and root cloak going.
Edit: no luck with root cloak.

Just an idea, no idea if it will work, but has anyone tried downloading a movie from google play movies while the device is rooted, and seeing if it plays? I'd do it myself, but my device currently isn't rooted, so could someone test that for me?

Yes. It seems to be this tablet, and perhaps Samsung generally...
I have been busy, but will root my tablet and try to figure it out.

You may be in luck. Try Chainfire's new v2.60 systemless root.
It may work as android pay also apparently works.

Do I have to be rooted already before I use the systemless root? Or will that root my device on its own? I'm a little bit confused on how to go about installing this.

System partition needs to be complete stock so no previous root.
Just install as you would any other supersu zip.
It will unpack and patch the boot.img on the fly and install systemless root.
Have a backup ready.

I was on stock firmware, installed TWRP (I did NOT use CF-autoroot before hand!) and then flashed the 2.60 beta, and it threw my device into a bootloop. Did I do something wrong?

It should work on 5.1.1. Are you sure you didn't have root before? The system needs to be clean. When supersu installed did it say systemless root?
If everything was as it should be then you need to make a bug report in the supersu thread to Chainfire.

Activate Android Pay on a rooted phone

I'm on M3 rooted with Despair kernel.
Got Android pay update and tried to activate it by adding a credit card information. It bailed out saying that my phone can't be trusted, I figured out that's because of root.
I tried to unroot in SuperSu. First by disabling Enable Superuser root button, second by Full unroot. Both methods didn't work, Android pay still couldn't be activated.
I then tried to format and flash boot, system, recovery MPA44I images. I started to get a RED message your phone can't be trusted on boot. Android pay still couldn't be activated. NOTE: I didn't erase data partition.
I don't want to do a full factory reset.
What are my options now ?

Go to the Android Pay app info, and uninstall updates. This will roll it back into Google Wallet. You should also go and uninstall the new wallet app if you have it so as to avoid confusion.
After that, I had to find an APK site that could update my wallet app back up to Version 9.0. I've since disabled auto-updates to the Google Wallet app until I see some signs of support for root.

My kindle fire updated to 5.1.2 and I didnt realize it, is there anyway to reset it?

I thought i blocked it when I used the tool to unlock the google playstore and everything, obviously i was wrong.
Is there anyway to set it back to 5.0.1 or even 5.0.0, also is there any way to do that without losing all of my apps/information.
Or can i simple run that google playstore tool again. Thats all i really want on my tablet right now, dont reallly want to root kit it at the moment, and i dont wanna brick it, messing around myself. So if there is anyway to get the play store working on 5.1.2 again or resetting it to 5.0.1 or 5.0.0 with or without losing my data can anyone please let me know and help me out if possible. Thanks guys
Edit: Ok the original install google play tool still works with 5.1.2 without any problems and it still lets you reblock updates (as far as i know, it said it worked) and now my playstore works again.
What exactly did you do? Uninstall all the google framework etc? Just reflash the bat script?

Yeah i uninstalled all the google framework, the playstore any google related stuff. Re ran the the update blocking and re-ran the playstore install from the batch file

I have 2 tablets, and both were patched with Glytchy's script. One of the tablet never updated to 5.1.2 from 5.1.1, but the other tablet did, and it removed root.
I try running the script again on the 5.1.2 tablet, but it doesn't work (see picture).
How did you get it to work? Maybe your never really installed 5.1.2, and only downloaded it?
This doesn't work for me anymore. My fire updated and wouldn't sign in after that. I uninstalled all the google stuff. Reflashed the bat file posted by shadow. Now when I try to add my google account it says can't establish connection with the server.

Not sure which method you used as the linked post contains references to many other articles. If you used 'adb shell pm hide' then I'm not surprised it didn't work. Preferred method is to rename components responsible for providing OTA functionality.

I bought them all at the same time.
I messed up and had my kindle automatically updated to 5.1.2
Same here, update to 5.1.2 and now rooting not possible. Therefore no FlashFire, therefore no custom rom, therefore lots of time wasted...
It is new guys, give it some time... I am sure people are working on it... Just keep an eye for it...

Bein Sport app refuses to work with my rooted Z3C

Hi everyone!
I have a rooted Z3C and it is a fantastic phone, I love it. The problem is that I bought a television sport service that includes the possibility to watch games on your phone, it's called Bein Sport. This app is able to detect root and refuse to play any videos so the service I bought becomes kind of useless
The worst part is that I don't want to mess around, just want to watch games on my phone and use the service for what it was thought. Si I thought i'd give a shout here, has anyone been able to bypass that annoying feature? I don't even understand why they don't like rooted phone
thanks!

There is an Xposed module for masking root on your phone, not sure if it will work or not. There is another Xposed app that offers help as well.
Installing Xposed can sometimes be tricky, make sure you find the right arm zip or you could be facing bootloops.
The place to start if you want to go down that road is here

I use Xposed, it's very popular and works fine on the Z3c. I think the emphasis is to read about it before you do it, as many people rush in, go to downloads, install the one with the latest build number and then come crying to the forum about bootloops.
The fact that you have read ahead on the page before you did anything assures me that you won't mess it up :good:
If it reassures you, I am using xposed-v80-sdk22-arm.zip on a 5.1.1. build. But there are more recent versions out now, although I don't know what the advantages of using those are. Perhaps later versions cover the use of MM. Can anybody enlighten me on that?
Edit: Once you have flashed the installer in recovery, restart the phone and then install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk
With that installed and running you can find the modules and install them.
Each install or change of settings requires a restart.

Yep, installed, up do date, and some apps even use my root without any issues
If anyone comes here, here is what happened to me: I tried to install Xposed to try this trick but my phone would'nt falsh because it couldn't mount /system. I assumed that it was a problem with partitions. I tried deleting root manually but the app always found root even when I wasn't rooted anymore (beware, this app is pretty smart). I ended up having to go back to stock which sucks because the battery is really bad in comparison, but anyway I can watch football! Cheers

Netflix wont work on XT1925-6

im rooted, sure thats the problem. and i used magisk hide as well. also tried sideloading different netflix apks, still coming up with errors. seen a couple of threads elsewhere about changing "liboemcrypto.so" to something else, but that isnt even a file in my system, so no go. ive tried quite a few other apks for netflix.
any help at all will be appreciated
Edit: well apparently the april 8th 2017 version works, i sideloaded that and it works fine, has downloading so i guess thats a workaround if anyone else looks this up.

Netflix App unsupported device

I can't install the netflix app from the google play store any more. I'm sure this worked before but after I rooted my phone the device is marked as incompatible. I unrooted it and flashed the stock rom (did not look the boot loader), but still can't install the netflix app. I can’t tell if this was really caused by rooting the phone or something else because I did not checked immediately after rooting my phone.
Is this normal? Was this even caused by rooting the phone? Can I fix the isseue with or without root?
Not sure if this is relevant but I also have issues with the google pay app since I rooted the phone. I Found some instruction to fix that but was not able to test it.

You can download the latest Netflix APK from the apkmirror website. Apparently you need to have a locked bootloader to get it listed back on playstore
I already assumed this but did not try, because this was not a issue on my old phone.
Loading it from apk mirror is fine for me. So I belive I will not check if locking the bootloder will actually fix the issue.

Not sure if this is relevant but I also have issues with the google pay app since I rooted the phone. I Found some instruction to fix that but was not able to test it.

And if you are rooted you have to set magisk hide for netflix app banking etc
