Android Studio crashes a lot - Android Studio

I have been having almost daily Android Studio crashes. I am on version 1.4, it happened on 1.3. Earlier versions would still crash but less often. Is there anything that can be done to reduce these? I have increased memory limits via studio64.exe.vmoptions
-Xms1024m
-Xmx3072m
-XX:MaxPermSize=1024m
-XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=225m
-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
-XX:SoftRefLRUPolicyMSPerMB=50
Running Win7 with 16 GB RAM and an SSD for system drive. When I open, it shows it using about 1.4 GB in Task Manager. There are no errors shown it just silently crashes randomly while editing code.

[Q] Extremely Low Ram & Camera Force Closes - CM7

I have a Droid A855 rooted, CM7 installed. I have the latest build. I have two issues, one is that the free RAM is ridiculously low with like 5 apps open it has about 20MB of RAM free. This is unacceptable because my Huawei Ascend has 90 free with many apps open, and the Droid has twice the ram of the Ascend. Is there any suggestions about this? Also the camera was working great and then it started freezing, and now the camera force closes when I press the button to take a picture. If I go to the camcorder it works fine, but otherwise I get force close. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally CM7 has just never ran smooth. No matter what I have tried. Gingerbread was never really meant for the Droid so most roms have built in stuff to help with memory that I do not believe CM7 ever had added. and the camera is outright terrible lately, I have it force closing on all my roms. I really don't know how to help all I can really try suggesting is trying out other roms

Thanks for the quick reply, I beg to differ on the Gingerbread not being for the droid part, my old Ascend runs Gingerbread Cm7 with flying colors, and this droid has double the performance...

I think you guys are missing a crucial part about how Android is built. Free RAM is wasted RAM.
Newer versions of Android, especially Gingerbread, are better at RAM management than older versions. Granted, there's an ever-growing need for more RAM for basic system functions, but Android is designed to free up RAM on-demand for the things that need it.
Just because RAM isn't free doesn't mean that the system is going to slow down. Android will put the stuff that's not being used anymore into a swap file so that the stuff you need to work with can do what it wants.

Yes but the ram is going so low that it is closing my applications like music when I go to a different screen.. it's frustrating

What? I dont understand
I agree with you and I will like to agree with you but it just won't work. This is like Windows Vista, they use all the memory, but it is very slow when you try to open application which you don't use a lot.. and it also causes a lot of slowness when you try to use more ram for soemthing else, like modify a huge image in photoshop and then switch to some other application.
Get back to the real story, my phone get memory lower than 50 free MB easily. and when I open Google current in this stage, it just hangs for 5 minutes. then I get a message "force closed". However, if I have 100 free MB, then I am safe, I don't see that popup message. Moreover, when I go to 40 free MB, I even have hard time to open skype and pick up the phone, it just rings, but the screen just hangs! when the screen refresh back, people get into mailbox already....
anyway, I found a software to temp solve this problem ZDbox. I set up when the screen hangs, "kill all apps in the memory" it is not best, but at least I can pick calls, I can run application without getting "force closed" message all the time.. because I need to reboot few times a day to solve ram issue.
perhaps, you can do a test yourself.
- install CM7
- install facebook app and run
- install google reader and run
- install google current and run
- install skype and run
- install gmail and run
- install google voice serach and run
- install google book and run
- install whatsapp and run
- install naver LINE and run
- install twitter and run
- install zdbox and run
- install lookout and run
- install go laucher
well after all this, your phone show be in less than free 50MB.. if so, try to run other application and you will see the problem.. screen hangs.....very slow response....not able to pick calls...

Yeah but even though "free ram is wasted ram" it still causes instability and force closes along with just pure out lag. My D1 lags when it has only 30mb of ram or less anything over 50 and it flies along. It lags to the point were even simple tasks are slow when they should not be.

Droid has 256MB RAM. (Actually, there's only 226MB RAM available to kernel.)
If the Droid has twice the RAM of your Huawei Ascend, then your Ascend has only 128MB RAM.
If it has 90MB RAM free with many apps open, then it means that all the system services and all the "many" open apps has to fit to 38MB of RAM.
That's hard to believe.
And btw., you can't compare RAM consumption on devices with different display resolution. Droid drives 854x480 pixels and uses hdpi bitmaps. I guess that the Ascend has lower resolution. The RAM demand is much higher on WVGA hdpi devices compared to low resolution HVGA/QVGA mdpi/ldpi devices.
When I my HTC Desire Z, I was in love, awe of the beautiful interface HTC Sense and the many adjustments I needed to make experience to a higher level, the Android. However, as I went about installing my wealth of applications, games and widgets (more than a hundred, are addictive), Sense started getting so instead of improving my experience. The initial screen would start every few hours re; each faucet took longer to record; Screen rotation when the keyboard sliding open continue for centuries; and each phone looked like he was struggling to get by.

[Q] app storage limitation data

Is there an ics rom that allows all 2 gb of /data to be used for apps? It seems most of them I've tried have the same limit from recent cm7 night lies about 350 mb, before google framework starts crashing (gummy) or I get a low space warning (nostalgia).
I believe this is just something we will have to live with on ICS with our phones.

So here is something interesting I'm currently running AOKP m28, with ~487 Mb of apps installed.
No low space warning and no framework crashes.

I'm running AOKP Build 28, I have ~529mb of apps installed and I am getting the warning.
However, I haven't had any framework crashes. Also, I was able to successful restart my phone.

Yeah, I started to get the low space warning when hitting the ~ 500 MB line as well.
Here's what I've found, two types of AOSP/CyanogenMod based Roms for Cappy:
1) Gives low space warning (and as long as you don't cross that threshold) does not produce framework crashes.
2) Does not give low space warning, but produces massive framework crashes.
The problem (as I've learned from CyanogenMod forums) is the datadata partition. CM7.1 used the datadata partition for apps, and did not have the low space warning. This meant whenever you approached the 172 MB limit of datadata you ran into spectacular framework crashes.
However around nightly 11162011 they changed that, and introduced the "low space warning". This allowed about ~300 MB of apps to be installed, before datadata complained.
I bet if you look at your datadata* (I looked at mine just now) it's pretty close to full. Mine currently only has 17 MB free. I notice when I'm browsing the web with Maxthon with about 5 tabs open I get the low space warning.
I'm wondering now though if this is a relic of linking left in my system folder. Next flash I'm going to format my /system before flash and see if this behavior changes.
*To check your datadata size open a terminal (I like Android Terminal Emulator) and type "df".
You can remove the symlink betwen /datadata and /data (I think) but it will most likely make your phone anywhere from a tad slower to unusable slow. Like I said its just a limitation from our phones, at least for now.

I figured this was what is happening. Has someone tried this and confirmed the performance hit?
I did way back when on ICSSGS 2.x and 3.x Made my phone almost unable, which means my nand isn't in good shape. But the result varies a lot so no way on telling.
I know they had a zip but doubt it will work on any other rom.

So last night I was performing some benchmarks after formatting system. What I found was interesting to say the least. CNA was no longer laggy. Aokp isn't as fast as it felt.
Anyways, I stuck with dark knight and currently have 560 mb installed with no low space warnings and no framework crashes.
Update:
So after installing >500 mb of apps I'm still getting low space warnings with dark knight. I ran df in my terminal and have determined that it happened when the datadata partition is at oR below 15 megs free. Wierd thing though, I was at 28 mb free, reboot come back up with 6 mb free? Moved 70 mb of apps to USB storage, and it moved up to 26 mb free on datadata.

I think right now, moving apps to SD card is the only real solution. I think the limit is near ~375ish?
So far, I've only moved games and a video player. Hopefully, they'll still work fine.
I've had this for about 2 days now, and it seems to be working. I did start having framework crashes at the end of monday, but the phone surprisingly restarted. I'm not sure how that happened (maybe the AKOP rom is stronger than I thought). I did try and move some of the bigger app's to the SD card while the phone was crashing....I thought it didn't go through, but maybe it did.
So in summary, move apps to SD card when warning pops up. And if phone starts crashing, still try to move apps to SD card, restart and hope it works?
PS...Is anyone running the nostalgia ROM? I don't think that ROM has this problem. The developer said he had something like 250 apps installed. I'm not using it currently b/c I didn't like some of the theme-ing such as that in the people app. However, the developer recently told me that I could modify the zip package with an unskinned people app. If this AKOP rom fails me, I'll go to that and update results.

I've run Nostalgia as well, it's just more Samsung Bloat (From Doc's) on top of the AOKP core.
So it will give you the low space warning when datadata fills up, but largely like AOKP as long as you deal with it (Dark Knight as well) the system is rock solid.
HOWEVER there is good news for us:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1541942
The script above SHOULD help us use more of our app storage space, while still providing the awesome speed that custom roms are known for.

So after a month of running the "datadata" fix:
I have about 700 MB of apps installed with no framework crashes, no low space warnings (AOKP B32 / Glitch).
Datadata consistently has about 80 MB available. at it's current rate of increase when installing new apps, it's possible this configuration would allow the complete 2 GB usage of the data partition.

[Q] Slow startup

I have an Intel i7-4770 3.4GHz system with 24 GB of ram and it takes about 3-5 minutes to start Android Studio after clicking on the icon on the Desktop. I am running the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Has anybody seen something like this? It didn't used to be so bad. I've been using it for about one year, from beta to the current stable release. Are there any fixes I can do to help this out? Maybe uninstalling and installing again?
It is the same in all Android Studio versions

I have the same issue too, a Intel i7-2.4G + 8GB RAM, the starting of Android Studio is very slow, taking about 5 minutes. After the slow starting, it works good when editing source code.
The latest version Android Studio 1.3 isn't very good for everyday use.

It seems to have a lot to do with the damn indexing it does.
I resorted to killing the indexing services in windows process explorer and it seemed to speed the project load up some what.
I was having problems with being able to re-load a newly created project. But it was probably because the IDE was bogged down in indexing and just had not finished.
The developers need to add a means of disabling this indexing because it is a pain!
At one stage it was taking me 30 seconds or more to enter a friggin image asset id - I don't know what that was about but it was damned infuriating.
No other programming related software I have ever used has had these problems.

Memory Management for CM

Hello,
I'm a little behind the times as I just installed cm 12.1 on my Nook HD+.
I'm running into available RAM problems with my Nook HD+.
First, I've tried reducing the number of apps that start at boot,
either through the Boot Manager app or by turning off "run at startup"
in the app's info. Boot Manager does not list all of my apps, and
turning off "run at startup" is not present as an option in many app info's.
Also, many apps seem to magically reclaim RAM after being shut down
by a task manager. I have a few questions.
What are the best apps available for boot management? Are there better ones
than Boot Manager?
Does the RAM reclaiming happen irregardless of the task killer?
What are the memory management "secrets" of Lollipop (or Marshmallow)?
Do I have to live with fewer apps on my Nook HD+?
Is there a good source that describes memory management for Android?
Thanks
You should never have to manually manage apps that are in RAM with Android. It does it automatically and efficiently. What makes you think there is a problem? The HD+ has 1GB of RAM and android keeps it automatically full so that apps can start quickly.
You might be confusing RAM with available storage space and with a 16GB device you can run out of storage space very quickly if you install many apps and a lot of media.

Hello again,
NO, I am definitely talking about RAM. I've installed Advanced Task Manager
and it reports available memory. After boot, available RAM is approximately
150-250MB only. At 150MB apps start crashing. It's hard to keep the browser
running without a crash after a few minutes. Right now, to prevent trouble
I have to "boost" to get back over 200MB. After a minute in an app,
other apps have restarted and RAM drops from that 200MB quickly. I don't
like to boost so often. If you need the specific .zip I installed, I can post
that for everyone . I guess development of CM 12.1 has finished.
Greenify is the solution
THE Solution: Greenify. Amazingly simple hibernation app.
Who needs freeze apps.
Thank you

RAM insufficient

Seems to be an Android OS issue, every phone I owned has issues with the memory filling up and making the phone slow.
The fix is to disable Chrome, and use something lightweight as Opera Mini. Chrome will make your Facebook, Messenger apps and Android OS and System use more RAM. Chrome itself will require 100-300mb of RAM, while Opera stays below 10mb.
I'm now always above 1,2gb RAM, with Chrome I was on 800mb left, and there I started to be really slow.
Sent from my VTR-L29 using Tapatalk
I use chrome excessive and i do not have any problems. I also don´t see any reason why a phone/pc is getting slow when there are 800 MB of RAM left. Basically this is actually good, because everything in the ram does not have to be reloaded each time. This is the concept of the RAM (and also Android and other systems). It will just get slow when the RAM is completly used and has to be cleared first to get some space

There is a threshold when a device starts to go slow, and that's way before it hits 0 or 500 on the RAM. 800 MB seems what this phone wants to be over of.
I have lots of apps, many that require 100-300 MB to operate.
My phone used to slow down until I just disabled Chrome. Now I'm constantly over 1,2 GB. I don't know for what reason but Chrome made apps like Facebook, Messenger... to raise their MB requirements by 30-50%, as well some for the OS, system and UI. I've been on 800 without Chrome once and it wasn't slow. Chrome messes with the RAM, requires allot and affects other apps.
When I hit 800 MB with Chrome I always had to restart, it would never go up on its own even if not used for a day.
