Screwed by the Fine Print: Can't Use Google $50 Credit at the Google Store - Nexus 5X Accessories

I hurried to order my 5x in order to get the $50 Google promotional credit, thinking I could use the credit balance to purchase from the Google store the USB-C cables I knew I would need.
Today, I went to order my cables, and the store wouldn't let me check out, saying "invalid payment method."
I went back to the offer, and in the fine print on the terms it says: "Items ineligible for purchase using promotional balance include certain subscriptions (see the Help Center for more information), as well as items in the Google Store." (emphasis added). You can only use the credit to buy intangibles, not actual things.
I feel ripped off, like it was a cheap bait and switch. Was I unreasonable to think I could use a Google credit to buy things at the Google store? You can use the Google credit from their marketing questions (Google opinion rewards) at the store. I don't need any games or movies, but I do need new cables.
That's my rant.

This has always been the case.

pretty sure it is google PLAY credit, not google STORE credit. so no, you won't able to spend play credit at the store.

I discovered that as well. Google Play credit, regardless of whether it was from this promo or the Opinion Rewards, cannot be used at the store. I called customer support to see if it could be applied to the type C wall charger they sell, and they wouldn't budge. Oh well.

I'm not happy that I can't use the balance on a charger, but I'm also not surprised. Physical equipment costs them a lot more than apps.
With the right cables, you can get away with using an older charger and a minimal difference in charge time. Most of those cables cost way less than google's quick chargers on the store.

yup

What was the cutoff to receive this credit? I thought it was if you purchased in October? Anyway, I ordered on the 29th and got it on the 30th. Haven't heard anything about it.

You'll get an email to redeem the offer from the Googs. If you don't (say within a week or 2) I'd contact customer support

If you are a Play Music subscriber you can use it to pay that subscription, I was able to switch my recurring payment method to my Play credit balance.

I'm pretty sure you had to order by the 25th to get the play store credit.
To the OP, how can you feel ripped off for something you got for free? Entitled much? It's said for play store use only since the beginning, it's your own fault for not reading. Everything has fine print these days.

Yeah it definitely was the 25th. Any free money is good money. Paid for Nova Launcher prime for me!

Picked up Ellie Goulding album with some of my credit. I also had a promo for half off an album so total cost was less than $9 Play credit

I ordered mine on the 18th of October and had to call Google about the credit. It turned out there was an email with a redeem code. I bought nova prime as well! Love it.
And yes it's just Google play apps, BUT, if you're into dating apps, you can use the money towards ok cupid I know for sure but maybe some others as well. That's a plus as I'm trying to buy apps, but now I can't find any worth buying except nova launcher prime of course!

Replacement N7 gave me another $10 in G-Wallet

I just got my replacement N7 today and when I was setting everything up I opened up the Google Wallet app and sure enough when it finished setting up my account it showed another $10 on my prepaid card. It's especially nice since i spent $8 and change from my first Wallet account filling up my Buell last night.
is your replacement device free of any issues. I'm about to return mine due to screen separation and death pixels

So far so good. I've only had it for 3 hours tho so we'll see how it goes but all seems good now.
Yea the money is linked to the NFC chip. It will reset back to $10 when you switch to a custom rom.
My Galaxy Nexus did this and I got $15 twice. I used the N7 to buy McDonald's and after switching to CM10, Wallet reset my balance to $10.
So if you play your cards right, you can maximize your gift cards.
I wouldn't try to take advantage of the process but I also won't turn away a free buck. My Galaxy Nexus and N7 have 2 different balances even though I use the same account. Why they don't limit it to one free gift card to any one account is beyond me. Google is smart so I'm assuming this was intentional.
They are trying to push their Wallet system so what better way to increase usage then to give people free money to use it with.

Actually, I first signed into my wife's account on the replacement and it gave her $25 to use then when I unlocked and rooted it I used my account like usual. I got my original and my replacement from gamestop so I don't know if it it work would or not on a unit straight from google.

Do the replacements usually come with another play store credit? I thought that play store credit was tied to your account and not per device?

It is tied to your account, but if you use a different account when first signing into your replacement, that account will get $25 credit. I used my wifes's account, signed in, she got the credit then I turned on usb debugging, then unlocked/rooted and signed in on my account.

Any reason to not order from Google Play Store?

With preorders starting soon where should I be ordering? I was planning on just ordering on the Play Store because that is where I ordered my Nexus 5 and 7 (2012). I'm currently on T-Mobile and have enough money to pay cash. Would there be any advantages in ordering somewhere other than the Play Store? I know the Play Store charge for shipping and Tax. I like that they have offered free screen replacement for the Nexus 5 recently. Even though I have never broken a screen on a phone before. I have been happy with google's service in the past. Any advice?
I will order it from whomever can it to me the fastest, but in this case it will probably be google.
In my opinion, if you have the ability to order from the Play Store, then that's where you should get it from. Google has great customer service and a great warranty policy, and you only get to take advantage of that if you order it directly from them.
Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
Tax is really the only reason not to order from Play. You'll be waiting a few months before finding a place that you could get it from without paying tax and then you have to worry about poor customer service. Eat the tax and buy it straight from Google.

Exactly. I kind of see the tax and shipping as the cost of their great warranty policy. I had to warranty my N5 a couple weeks ago and the process was completely painless. I called them at like 3pm, and I had the replacement on my doorstep the very next day. That's some crazy fast replacement shipping.

As a Verizon customer, I fear that may end up being sufficient reason not to order from the Play Store. I really want to nab one ASAP, but if the Play Store version doesn't work on Verizon, I'll end up having to go through the hassle of returning it and buying from Verizon. :/

I know there was an option for quicker delivery. I feel kind of dumb because I can't remember which shipping option I chose (standard or rush). From the price, I'm thinking I may have chosen quick shipping as it looks like it shipped 2nd Day Air via UPS. What I can tell you is that it shipped from Lousville, KY on December 24th, and arrived on my doorstep December 27th.
I believe when I ordered my nexus 5 on launch day from google it was like $25-$30 for 2nd day. And I believe google is shipping on the 3rd? T-Mobile is the 12th? Just hope you get through to order. Lol

is it really the 3rd? that would be fantastic... but I can't afford it straight from google at the moment... i need to put it on a interest free loan somewhere xD I'm hoping amazon puts the phone up for preorders too. though I don't expect it with their push for firePhlolne
Damn tax plus 14 shipping. That brings it to around 780 dollars. 650 for the 32 GB was already pushing the limit for me (about 715 dollars with tax and shipping I'm estimating). I'm probably gonna have to wait for amazon for this. Amazon also has great customer service and free shipping for prime members so I'll be alright with them. (But then I'm gonna probably regret it later when google does some kind of great deal lol) I guess I'll decide tomorrow

There are no 'versions'... All phone's are the same. This is a Nexus device, not a Google Play Edition of some other phone..
I'm getting it from the playstore.
Don't forget that if you get it from Play Store, then Google will replace it for free if anything goes wrong. I don't know if this is official policy but I've had friends use it and its excellent service. e.g. one friend complained his N5 wasn't getting gps signal regularly, sent it back and they sent him a new one.
So if paying full price, I'd rather get it from Google vs Amazon etc.
They will replace it, but with a refurbished model. It says so in the google play store terms of service.
Not that it's a bad thing, just giving people more clarity on this.

Amazon live chat confirmed Nexus 6 preorder

He said it will start around 8:00-10:00am pacific time.
I was under the assumption tomorrow preorders were only for google play store. No??
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah same. He took a while to look into it then gave me that info. Don't take it as a fact.
That would make my day.
Certainly am not staying up all hours of the night to nab a pre-order what with work and all.
That Amazon's offering a pre-order doesn't surprise because (1) Amazon's Italy site is currently listing the N6 for pre-order and (2) they've offered the Nexus 9 for pre-order as well. The ultimate question is when they'll open it up. Could it be the case that they allow orders before Google? Some how I doubt it, but who knows.
Also, I just finished up a chat with Google Playstore. Very tight lipped. But the woman "suggested" I call Best Buy. I said that was the only retailer that would make sense because dialing 1-800-APPLE would probably not be as informative. She liked my joke and gave me a $10 playstore gift card. Now time to pick out some movies for the wait!
I just chatted with Amazon CS and they said they have no information on it.
Ahh I don't understand why we need to wait for Google employees to get into work for this a website to begin accepting orders. Turn on a rule or something. "If midnight allow orders."
Has anyone explained the logic here? (I'm sure it's only slightly more complicated than that)

Still cheaper than $649 + tax + shipping.
I have cheap tax where I live and this is how much it would cost for me from Play Store.
$649 + 45.43 tax (7%) + $13.99 shipping = $708.42
Although it could be argued that ordering from the Play Store has it's advantages.

Pre Order Credit?

Yeah, it's the same as all their deals. Just so you don't return the phone after you get the promo. The site says, "Customers will receive an email notifying them Promotional Balance is added to their account 6-8 weeks after the end of the promotion (October 26, 2019 at 11:59pm PT) ... Promotional balance expires on 01/31/20 11:59pm PT."
I cancelled the Google Store pre-order and got it from Amazon. $100 at Amazon is more useful than at the Google Store in my opinion.
If you have Fi and get it on Fi they just pull it out of your bill until it's consumed; works for me.
The google credit is mentioned in the fine print, I had to scroll to the very bottom. I am hesitant to order from Verizon since they have a history of locking the bootloader, currently they have $450 credit for trading in a phone like the Pixel.
Verizon=just say no. Not ever. Uh-uh. Not going to happen. Ever. Example: Saving 400 on Verizon equals walking through 500 miles of dog feces barefoot before you get the opportunity to lick a goats sphincter. Yeah, you could do that because your tough and all that and you end up 400 dollars richer but do you really need to save 400 dollars that much?

Don't know how it works if you finance but if you pay cash they are SIM unlocked immediately, I took one over to Tmo simply by sticking my SIM in before I even booted it up for the first time. The bootloader can also be unlocked but again I'm referring to a cash buy, it may be different if you finance.

I think you're right, financing=SIM-Locked, Cash=Unlocked!
I didn't say that, I said I didn't know what the situation was with financed devices. Fi is super straight up when you call them, if I was interested in picking one up via financing there I would give them a quick shout and see what they say.
I just read that you can order through the Goog store, get their 100 credit but select via Fi on checkout and then turn around and get their 100 credit also, seems like one is slipping through a crack that may be closing at any time.

A nice perk if you have a google One paid account. I got $99.90 in credit on Google (10%) as a One customer and will also get the $100 credit. Unfortunately the credit would expire prior to the buds being out, unless maybe they allow pre-orders very early in the year, or they release them earlier than 'spring'.

My store credit dropped just before black Friday week last year. That plus $50 off the Nest home hub, that sucker was mine for $50. This year it's $100, so I'm pretty sure the Nest hello will be mine, that or an outdoor camera for really cheap. Crossing fingers it comes before then!

That's what I thought at first But it turns out that you can claim the headphones 14 days after you pre-ordered them as long as you have received them. Meaning if you pre-ordered 14 days before launch you can claim them the day it arrives. Your 14 days returns right only starts the day it arrives I think So you could claim and them return it under distance selling regs. Lots of people have already had their claims for headphones accepted.
