every time i boot it tries to update "Fire is installing the latest update.... can take up to 10 min"
i have root....
and i believe Amazon is trying to stop rooting with this update

PLEASE Help
i'm scared this update will break something
:crying:

back story
i thought i had time. and was waiting for the play store to recognize my device before i ordered Titanium Backup Pro
to freeze apps. and OTA
the play store says "You don't have any devices" when i try to login in to the play store on my computer
but i can access the play store from the play store app on my fire just fine
i read a post that said it could take up to 2+ hours for the play store to recognize the fire tablet, when logging in with a computer
so i was waiting

Won't stopping a update in progress mess up the tablet possibly brick, 5.0.1 is needed for gplay its saying no devices because 5.0.0 gplay doesn't work on it

Also sometimes it says its updating I believe because it is refreshing the apps when you root it says its updating I've noticed on stock android when you do this stuff it says its upgrading because its optimising apps

Just realised you've connected to the internet before blocking otas the guide clearly says to not connect to the internet so it can't download them, Google play on 5.0.0 can't check licences also so apps like launchers won't activate the plus features

The splash screen that says the latest update is being installed is just Amazon's version of the Android dialog that says Android is upgrading, which you'll get any time you wipe cache. In other words, if you're already on 5.0.1 and have been messing around with it (e.g. rooting it) it's not unusual to see the "latest update" screen on reboot as the cache gets rebuilt.

dont know but i am already on 5.0.1 or maybe it's 5.0.1.1
this is something new and just released
stopping the update, should not brick it
if it does i could always put the update file back
once someone tells me how to remove it or stop the update process

oh ya i wiped the cash yesterday and did a factory reset
then rooted it
you think thats why today i see the update ?
or is it something new ?
no that cant be it i remember it rebuilding the cash yesterday
so this is something new
probably to fix the root hole we found
because if we root it we dont have to see their adds
or use their programs like "PRIME"
and they dont make money
thats why i am scared of this update
because it's in their best interest to stop root and boot-loaders

If you're on 5.0.1 then you're on the latest and you're not receiving an update.

I have got same problem
I originally have stopped the OTA through adb shell
but then I still got the update
not sure why this happens...

More than likely it isn't an ota, I had this happen a few times messing with system using root apps, it's just rebuilding cache like users suggested, also when I rooted the device I had that come up before, it's fine.
Just make sure the ota services are disabled/hide/removed.

You can install all the updates available for this device, you won't lose root. Not yet at least

Thank you all for your kind replies

i used this app to check for root

dead give away right there, but i wanted to make sure anyway

I'm rooted but without CWM (still have stock recovery). Can I simply defrost (freezing is all I've done) and get the update? Or do I have to do a hard reset to get back to full stock?
If hard reset to stock is required, any tips or techniques that you use to save time to get back to where you were? Thx.
Well I am updated and while I notice that all the extra Verizon apps are gone here is what I see...
1. Kindle, bing, slacker, tunewiki, and Verizon tones are all still installed and no option to remove them.
2, After I installed a dozen apps of my own, I still have 1gig of app space available.
3. The phone is remarkable faster and smoother.

Rooted should be ok, you may likely lose your root. It does not install with clockwork. I used lgnpst and imaged my phone, I then did a factory reset, felt like starting from scratch.
Verizon only removed a handful of apps. I am not sure it was worth the trouble. I have to root again so I can go back in and freeze or uninstall all the crap they left.
Id say in the de-bloat department they were a epic fail.

yeah I returned my phone to stock with the lg tool and tot file, then did a factory reset, updated, rooted again, used titanium back up to uninstall the rest of the bloat Verizon missed.
While I do not know if the update breaks root or not, you can use the root tool in the dev section (esteem root v2) to root your phone. It works like a charm.
So was anything else updated? Trying to decide if it's worth my time to bother with. I am already running a zv9 that I seriously debloated and tweaked to where it's useable.

It will rebloat your phone. While they did patch some things, my phone did actually run smoother. I did have to root it again and un-install all the bloat they left, vzw tones, navigator, city id, kindle, slacker, etc...
No better battery life and not much of a performance increase. Id wait if you are happy.
keeps trying to update
I was planning on rooting & putting BrokenOut ROM on my revo when my contract ended. Then this OTA update came out, and I was worried that it would prevent that. So, I rooted the phone and put CWM recovery on and did a backup. As expected, the OTA update failed.
But, it hasn't given up. It tries and tries, about once a day. I hear my phone chirp, and it has rebooted and drained the battery, and shows at various times either the "update failed" screen, or the "updating in 2 minutes" screen, or recovery. When I get prompted to run the update, I defer it - but the deferal time doesn't correspond to when the reboot happens.
It's possible that the rooting and recovery are behind the problem, and not the update - but I suspect the update has something to do with it.
So, what I'd like to know is:
1) if I get the update, can I still use ROM Manager to change the recovery back to CWM, and still be able to flash BO on it?
2) to get the update, is it safe to just use ROM Manager to put the stock recovery on it, then run the update? I haven't done any debloating or other rooty stuff not mentioned above. I'd rather not lose data by reset, tot, etc.
3) can I fix my problem without getting the update? Maybe one of the options on the "update failed" screen? I'm not sure if I've selected only "OK" or only "Cancel" so far - or what those are supposed to mean.
4) do the security updates make zvb better than BO? (Does anyone here no what the security updates are?)
Thanks...
Broken out is based off of V9, so unless there are updates to the radio, you will most likely over-write most, if not all, of the updates.
As posted earlier, someone has rooted and installed cwm. But, someone wants to post up the update (you can rip it from the /data/local/tmp directory, iirc) I will try my best to update BO. Also, if someone can do a backup of the new update and post it up, (not the blob crap, the other one ) I'll rip the kernel and post a flashable zip. Maybe they did fix something. We will see.

Yeah, I figured current BO would undo zvb, that's why I was wondering which I should go with. The update downloaded several times, but I don't see anything in /data/local/tmp. Don't know if the download failed or just didn't persist. It hasn't tried to update for the last 30 hours or so. I'm not eager to encourage it at the moment.
I see that haxcid re-rooted, but nothing about re-cwm-ing.

I rebooted my phone, and once again it prompted me to install the update. I selected "defer" and then checked settings / about phone / software update / status which says "Package downloaded successfully".
However, /data/local/tmp is still an empty directory, according to ES File Explorer.
That's where the file was stored for v7, v8, and v9. Maybe they changed it for this update. IDK. I'll look into it. No worries. It's all good.
I think it gets downloaded to /cache/fota, but deleted once the process finishes failing. I will try to trigger it again and copy it before the phone reboots. I was not given the defer option this time.

Not really. I believe MT disabled the update feature from BO; hence the 'super fast' FC's at boot.

Don't be embarrassed! Like you, I never felt the need to with my Nexus 5... my previous HTC Desire and HTC Desire S however were another story... I just hate HTC Sense with a passion after using the Nexus!
Tried 2 sideload OTA (adb reboot bootloader, then (when my Nexus 5 is in recovery mode and after tellin him "apply update from ADB") adb sideload 785a2f7af3718dba7e569decde8b6c4dc476a309.signed-hammerhead-LRX22C-from-LRX21O.785a2f7a.zip) , Error !
Unroot usin supersu unroot, Error !
Google sent me OTA by air (3 times), Error !
In order 2 wash without data loss, I tried Skipsoft Android Toolkit washin, then I put out android Avast (then sideload again), Error !
I wiped cache...
Then Google sent me OTA (4th), Error !
Do U know some right way (except factory reset) ?
Got mine a few hours ago and installed without issue. its tough to say if it fixed anything since I wasn't having any real issues outside of Chromes performance being terrible and the occasional screen redraw. Seems faster but that might be placebo or just that my caches were cleared with the update.
Worse is I kwow where is the bug : reading /cache/recovery/last_log.x tells that :
.../...
Verifying current system...
failed to stat "/system/bin/install-recovery.sh" : No such file or directory
etc...
(Somebody stole file before...)
As far as I know you must not have custom kernel, custom recovery or be rooted for the OTA to be applied correctly
Got mine this afternoon, in BC Canada only 13.3 mb downloaded and installed with no issues, stock, no root, unlocked boot loader. I always wait a bit after a major update before doing anything to my phone since you know the bug fix is always coming shortly after.

Flickering screen?

I just sent back the N6 that had the screen burn out, I got my RMA device and its on just 5.1 not 5.1.1 should I update it or keep it does it matter? Also this N6 is doing some of the same issues that the other device did before it burned out. The screen has a lot of flickering and triangle flashes but only when I'm using my web browser, also, today I got off of a phone call and the proximity sensor failed to turn the screen on. What's up with that? I'm starting to wonder about these N6's man. Any ideas guys. I think I may need to just flash the s#-t out of this thing

Unlock it. Fastboot flash the updated 5.1.1 factory image and see what you have. If bad send it back. If good it all good.

I'm using adblock browser. I just updated to Windows 10 so now my adb is all jacked up for some reason. When I turned on the phone it said that there was a 5.1.1 update ready to be installed. Should I just take that one before I unlock the BL and root or do the unlock first? Thanks to all of you who are helping me out. Good people.

Unlock first. Too many been bricked on that update with bootloader locked. I wouldn't take it. Win 10 didn't jack with my adb. I have full SDK tho. Some are using the 15 minute adb/fastboot. I would search and try to reinstall it. Does your usb debug work as far as showing device MTP on PC. If not you lost the Google driver.

More than likely that browser is the flicker problem. I use Chrome but with Adaway and MOAB. No adds anywhere. lol
I'll have to check. I'm so gunshy now I only hooked this to pc just to put music on it. I'll unlock BL and try the update after. Thanks

If able to put music on your driver is good. Need ADB/Fastboot working or you are already dead in the water.

Latest for all carriers is I version unless you are on TMobile then it is the one that says TMobile only. They don't have the security update yet. No need for TWRP yet as long as unlocked. Get it booted and see if everything works. Do NOT relock. DO NOT use toolkit. Do it manually with fastboot commands.

Mine is unbranded factory unlocked. It's restoring all my backed up poo right now. I guess I have 2 options. 1 take the Ota they send down or install the one I downloaded yesterday. It says for all carriers except tmobile. I got it from Google yesterday. It's the exact one that was on the phone I sent back. Do you have any particular preference or reccomendation?

The new I version has the Stagefright security fix otherwize the Z version is fine. That is what I am on. Haven't updated yet.. You can try OTA as long as unlocked. Have seen posts that say OTA won't work unlocked. Not sure. If it bootloops and it is locked you are hosed again and have to RMA.

how do I disable OTA updates?

I successfully rooted my new 5th generation Kindle Fire 7" tonight. However, it did update to Fire OS 5.0.1 when I was first setting it up. Can I still disable the automatic OTA updates? If so, HOW????

I'm in a similiar situation.
After buying the tablet I've updated to 5.0.1
Afterwards I've rooted the tablet via:

I actually used the method in that thread to install Google Framework/Play Store. This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/installing-google-framework-playstore-t3216122
I came across the tutorial video for it on youtube before I came across your post in this thread that linked to the Google Framework/Play Store install thread. The reason I came across this thread was because I was also searching for a way to disable OTA updates, however, I now noticed that in the Google Framework/Play Store install thread there's a note made by you which states that the install bat now includes blocking OTA updates as of 02 Nov 2015. I did follow this method after that date, so does this mean that I no longer need to use adb commands to disable OTA updates? I was going to use the method found in this thread, which you also linked to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/disable-ota-sdcard-write-access-t3220430 but I'm now assuming that I don't need to. Could you please tell me if my thinking would be correct on this? Thanks very much in advance.

Well the batch file has several options, if you've selected the 3rd one (block OTA updates from Amazon) on the menu and not used the 4th one then you have blocked them. If you've only used the 2nd option (Install Google Play store and remove ads from lock screen) then they aren't blocked.
Option 3 is still using adb commands to block the ota apks, the only difference is the batch file is 'automating' them so you don't have to type em in by hand. You just have to select 3 like Pond-life said above. And for the love of god don't anyone select option 4 !

When I used that batch file disabling ota was a selectable option. Assuming you did you should be safe. You can check by turning off WiFi and going to settings-device options-system updates. If you click system updates and get The requested action is not permitted then you should be OK. Of course you can also go the manual adb route as well. If updates are already blocked then you'll just get an error from adb (to the best of my recollection). Or run the batch file again and select the "Block ota" option again if you are not sure if you did before.
Edit: actually I was wrong, if you "pm hide" a package that's already hidden it just says "new status:hidden" again. Not sure that there is a way to tell if a package is hidden since there is no "pm list packages -h" command.

but future updates could be different

Amazon Appstore Network Error

Quick backstory; I rooted my 5th Gen 7" Fire a loooong time ago, with I believe a version of Rootjunky's supertool. Removed auto OS updates, all that good stuff. Accordingly, I cannot access the OS info via System Updates (tapping it gives a blank screen for a moment, then goes back to the main settings screen). I have Google Play & services installed.
So, I tried today to use the Amazon Appstore, and I'm getting a "Network Unreachable" error right when the app launches. I can't use any functions of the store. I'm thinking it's maybe because the app is such a relatively old version, Amazon's network is giving it grief, but I don't know for certain.
Like I said, I can't see for sure what OS version I have, but it has to be one of the first iterations of 5.something.
If anyone has run into this, or has any suggestions to get the appstore working again, I'm all ears. I did a factory reset, both from in the OS and from the Amazon recovery (complete with wiping cache), with no luck. Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you checked the clock? Sometimes, if the time is off, my store will break. Other than that, I'd recommend you download EZ File explorer, google form the most up to date amazon store apk, uninstall yours and give it a fresh install, especially if you feel out of date is the problem.
I'd also recommend you download a custom rom and flashfire and see if you can't fix that OS info problem, especially since you've already wiped all your data anyway.

This won't work:
- the version of Amazon's app store is different on FireOS; I don't believe it's available for download
- I did not see the OP had wiped his data; the OS info problem is related to blocking OTA updates

Best solution is to install a custom ROM; however you seem satisfied with FireOS.
Next best solution IMO is to reload FireOS (which includes Amazon's app store) but you will probably want to stick with version 5.0.1 if that's what is currently installed. Obvious problem is you can't determine that through normal means. Have to be careful here; if you attempt to reload 5.0.1 and your device is currently on 5.1.x or above it will brick. You would also need to reroot, reblock OTA updates, etc. In short, everything you did before. With no guarantee it will fix your original problem (although I think it will).
One way to test for 5.0.1 is to see if it will boot TWRP. However, that can be messy if you are unfamiliar with fastboot and/or have never established a connection with the device in question.
@steve8x8 - I seem to recall you wrote a tool that can query current component/system levels. Thoughts?
p.s. You could also go with FireOS 5.3.1 which is the last build that can be rooted at present. No brick risk as 5.3.1 is >= the current version of FireOS on the device.

You are correct, I am happy with the FireOS.
I've played in fastboot before, and given EXACT instructions, I can regurgitate results, but it's not my native tongue. I don't know if the appstore version is locked to the OS version, but according to Appstore Settings under the manage Amazon apps section, I'm rocking release-9.1011.5.1.39.0_2000145010, last updated 2/12/15. Any way to link that with OS version?
If no more info can be gleaned from my device, either from the appstore version or something steve8x8 may have, I may just load 5.3.1 on and run from there. Kinda rather not, but I'd kinda rather not not have appstore access.

To my knowledge there is no direct correlation of appstore version to FireOS version. Obviously there's a range but we'd need a 1-1 match to draw a comfortable conclusion.
You can test TWRP bootability by following the guidance in this post. If TWRP boots you can safely sideload FireOS 5.0.1 from here using instructions in this thread (posts #1 and #2). That said, if you have no intention of every installing a custom ROM there really isn't any advantage to retaining an older bootloader. If that's the case might as well sideload FireOS 5.3.1. Be aware there is no going back if you take this step.

Just be sure that you don't accidentally update. Don't connect to WiFi until you have KingRoot, and be sure not to let the os update finish downloading. Once you connect, it will start. Some tips I found on how to avoid updates:
Davey126 said:
- use Kingroot 4.92 or lower; avoid v5.x (nearly impossible to remove)
- partial OTA update files are erased each time the device reboots
- KingRoot reboots frequently
- find a slow AP (library, coffee shop, etc) to thoddle the pace of downloads
- enable WiFi only after KingRoot starts and kill it when run completes
- force reboot device if KingRoot hangs for a prolonged period
- you may have to repeat the process multiple times
- there are trickier approaches (eg: IP/domain blocking) with variable results; the above playbook has worked well for most
- good luck

Along with not hooking up wifi immediately, I was thinking of using rootjunky's supertool for root & update blocking, as the tool says it's now compatible with 5.3.1. Should be good enough, as long as I don't connect to a network until ALL of the supertool fun is done (I hope).

You need WiFi to root. That's why you need to be careful, since update starts quickly. Here's the thread the quote was from: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/help/dilemma-t3545062
If you can block the domains linked to in that thread, that'll help. It's not necessary, but it's a good idea.
EDIT: here's the post with them:

Using stock 5.3.1 fresh install here are the domain names used in the update process:
softwareupdates.amazon.com
amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
The first one is the actual update check, blocking DNS lookup of this domain effectively disabled auto-updates for me YMMV
The second domain name is where the firmware is actually downloaded from (not verified but seems probable). Note that this could change depending on how the update check is implemented.
I recommend blocking DNS resolution of softwareupdates.amazon.com if practical in your situation

Ohhhhh, I didn't realize Kingroot needs internet access... Besides that, I saw in the tool's changelogs that it even removes Kingroot & puts the normal supersu in the system, so I thought everything was more or less a "normal" rooting procedure. Whoops. Thank you, I'll be DNS blocking before anything.

It removes KingRoot after using it to root. AFAIK, KingRoot is the only thing that can root these tablets. Personally, I'd recommend finding your bootloader version and flashing that, but it's just a personal preference, and has no practical difference unless you have 5.0.x, which you don't. I just like having oldest I can in case a downgrade method is ever found.
Also I may have an updated appstore apk from my brother's 5.3.2.1 tablet, let me check.
EDIT: Nope, I don't. I do, however, have an (old) apk from the Amazon website. See if installing this version helps. Just out of curiosity, could you attach the apk from your current appstore? I'm wondering if it will install on Fire Nexus. The UI looks much better than the version I have downloaded.

I'll be happy to if you give me the path, or even the full name of the apk so I can search via root explorer.

If you have a file manager, search /system/app and /system/priv-app for com.amazon. venezia. Or, use an app like titanium backup to back it up.
It's taking forever to upload the apk I'm using, so here's the link if you want to test if it works: https://www.amazon.com/appstore_android_app
If not, I think you will need to reflash, unfortunately.

Used this method, I'm on 5.1.1 (5.4.1_112720 5.1.1). Dagnabbit, missed it by that much.

Then I'd recommend flashing 5.1.1. Like I said, if a downgrade method is found, it will probably be for older versions. Plus it's harder to brick, since only one or two versions are below it.

No go. Got a "Application Not Installed" error.

The thing there is, if the issue is indeed related to the age of the appstore, which doesn't look like it has been updated since the OS was, sideloading the same version would put me in the same boat I'm in now. If I drop 5.3.1 on there, that should fix me, assuming the age of the store is the underlying issue. Unless there's something I'm missing.
Ok, my venezia is attached.

A while back, I found a tutorial on how to upgrade system, but keep bootloader the same. Let me look...
Also, if it isn't the age of the app store, it has no effect. You could also try Amazon Underground app. It has a different package name, so it will install alongside the Appstore you have. This way, you can see if it has to do with the store or if it's just not working.
EDIT: Having trouble finding the link. I think what it was is you can download an update file, rename it from *.bin to *.zip, extract system.img, put it on the device, flash it, root, and disable ota immediately. I'll keep looking.

Umm, you guys?...
Ya wanna hear something wacky? Just for the fart of it, I ran the apk I just uploaded on my own device, and, um, the store works now. Zero problems. Connects just fine.
Now don't I feel like a horse's patoot?
Well, if nothing else, I learned what DNS to block if I upgrade to 5.3.1, how to check my bootloader via hex editor, and to rely on the kindness of strangers to fall bassackwards into an easy solution. Yeesh.

Oh. Well, I found the thread, if you want. It gives instructions for FlashFire as well.

Was there a .odex in the folder, and/or a lib folder? If so, could you also upload that? If not, then it appears it will not work. Shame. Thanks for the apk.
