Is it just me or is this phone a devepors dud? - Sprint LG G4

So I understand that we have locked bootloader but it seems that these forums are dying. This is the first LG phone ive ever owned but it really feels dead even compared to my Galaxy note 3. It's like nobody is even trying to do anything with it and its made me quite sad. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this phone feel fun and different like I remember doing to my Galaxy s2 or s3? I miss the good old days when a new rom came out every week and new exploits came out almost instantly.

Since there is no official unlock method, it's very tough to develop. Even if there was a workaround to unlock, these money hungry CDMA carriers lock us out of fastboot and adb, so it wouldn't be possible either way. I really wish I would've waited for the new Nexus phones or the OnePlus Two.

The one plus 2 isn't for CDMA, but yeah, the nexus phone would have been great.

Wasn't saying it was. I'm saying I wish I would've waited for it. I didn't want a carrier phone to begin with, but the G4 made me want it. Big mistake

I know how you feel. I had mine since release and though I think its an all around great phone root for the most part has done me justice. I just think the general idea of bootloader locking is bull**** and should be illegal. I would love a nexus phone but I will not buy into googles push to cloud storage and their services. I can deal with no removable battery but non expandable memory is a no go. Honestly if/when we get android M on the G3 and we get a custom rom I will go back to it provided the bluetooth issues are ironed out. But thats just my 2 cents

Bootloader unlock, illegal... Really? Please don't be that guy. We bought the phone, we should be able to do what we want to it. That's like buying a car and it being illegal to change your own oil.

You might want to read that again. Where did I state that UN locking it should be illegal. I said the whole boot loader locking thing is bs ie we should not be locked out from it.

I called LG and talk to a tech who told me if I send my phone to them they would unlock my bootloader but it would void my warranty and of course I already knew that but I was just shocked that they said yes instead of telling me no.

Came across something strange today.....

Few things I want to get straight, I in no way shape or form tampered with this device. I am an AT&T employee and came across this while setting a customer up with his new S5. This is how it came brand new sealed out of the box. Also, I understand the photo is blurry. This is due to the fact that the screen did not stay up long. I snapped as fast as I could before I had to take it back because it was actually extremely buggy and kept freezing. Just felt the need to to share with the guys. Looks like some are being missed in the lock down lol.

Can you tell what software version its running?
That doesn't mean the bootloader is unlocked. It simply means that the devices scanning utility (SysScope it was called on the S4) detected a change to a file. In the case of the phone you had, it sounds like it was probably do to a faulty board or failing software in a bad unit. The S4s are known to show "custom" for absolutely no reason at all or because of something on the SD card. It usually reverted back to official after a couple of reboots. I'm not trying to be confrontational by asking this, but how can you be an AT&T employee and not know this? Like I said, this question is not a personal attack, but I am wondering if AT&T gives any training on how these devices work in real life and not just on the shelf. Either way, I promise you the bootloader is still locked on that device. The unlocked symbol and custom have nothing at all to do with the bootloader.
Mine shows that also

Me too. Still not exactly sure what it means unless it's the developer options being enabled.
Edit: Just checked and it's not the developer options...and mine doesn't have the unlock icon anymore actually. I think scott14719 is probably right.

I'm right. If you want more information about it you can search the AT&T S4 forum for relevant threads. There really is a lot of information about it that might answer a lot of potential questions.

AT&T provides training that is optional for new devices, but there is an article released with relevant information to sell the phone. They do not train employees to check bootloaders, for root, for knox warranty, etc. None of my coworkers know what a bootloader is or what it means to be locked or unlocked. Edit: No training provided by AT&T mentions root, jailbreak, bootloaders, etc etc.
To be on topic, after I switched to ART, the Custom unlocked pad came up, when I switched back to Dalvik, the Custom unlocked padlock went away.
I am also an AT&T COR store employee and none of my coworkers know about that kinda stuff. Not a lick of training is given on that.

I'll try not to take offense to that....lol. No AT&T does no training for these things. And to be honest with you I am usually pretty knowledgeable when it comes to these things. I have been out of the Samsung scene for a while ( Due to me using my more developer friendly Nexus 5 or my new HTC One M8) so I am now unfamiliar with how these devices handle certain things. I have yet to do anything like change my runtime on the device do to the fact that it only made minor performance changes to my Nexus 5. If I would have I probably would have gotten the same boot screen and then eventually thought nothing of it. Just had a little moment of excitement while on the job lol.

Definitely no offence intended. I just wish AT&T, Bestbuys, etc... would do a better job of training the people that they expect to sell these devices. Most people don't know the everyday quirks of most devices unless they are given an oppertunity to learn about them.

Careful what you wish for!! Last thing I need is someone checking whether my Knox has been tripped or my bootloader unlocked when I do a return
As AT&T employees you better get ahold of some higher ups, and let them know they are going to lose lots of customers due to the lock down on their bootloaders of their devices. Many people are ready to switch.

But in the grand scheme of things 100 to thousands isn't that big of a loss. for an example with the s5 I can almost guarantee we are just a small subset of s5 owners the largest portion will never know what root is or have any idea what to do with it. The money they take from the larger portion will cover the expected returns from the 1% who are upset and or mad that they locked the BL.

Your right partially but grand scheme of things = all of their devices that are locked not just s5's. I am just saying that, they are always seeming to pull more customers in with new deals so gaining customers is important to them. So not losing customers should also be important in the same aspect no matter what the percentage is. If they don't care then shame on them.

No they won't. Who are they going to switch to? Tmobile? Tmobile will be locking down their bootloader as soon as they get the chance. Only reason why they haven't already is because they need as many customers as they can get. Same reason they kept downloader booster...even though they can't afford to keep it. Not to mention, the average user doesn't give a crap about bootloaders or download boosters.
I got the custom message after applying ART.

You are right I seen an older couple at the att store buying both s5's and it looked like they did not know anything about root. Etc. They are buying the device because of its features and camera. Not saying older people don't mess with the bootloader or anything.

Any Issues with this Device?

Hi, I'm about to upgrade from a ****ty Galaxy SII Skyrocket to this device, and I'm wondering if there's any known issues, like GPS lag, cell service not working, those sorts of things. I know how to use adb and android (was a dev for the HTC One V), but if there's something *special* with this phone, I'd like to know ahead of time.
Thanks!

Just browse the general and Q&A sections for discussion on certain things.
Some have issues with whatever and some don't. Best to read for yourself. ?
If you want full root, stay away from Verizon, at&t and Republic Wireless. With those you can't unlock the bootloader. If you get something with 4.4.3 or less on it, you can PAY for a bootloader unlock, maybe it will work. If you are on 4.4.4, There's no root for locked bootloaders on those 3 carriers. And no temp roots either.
That's the biggest thing to know in advance.
Thanks for the tip! I looked around the QnA and saw how some can't unlock the boot loader. That must suck. The model I'm getting is T-Mobile OEM factory unlocked (so I can use my provider, Immix) so I should be able to get the unlock code very easily from Motorola. I saw something about a camera update, what's that about?

Yup, you should be able to unlock the bootloader. A warning tho... It does technically void the warranty.
The camera is average... Tho even the best camera phones out there are mediocre and generally no where near as good as even a very cheap camera camera. Personally, I'd never let the performance of a phone camera play into my decision to buy which phone.
The best way to ensure good pics when you know in advance you are going to be taking pics... Is bring a camera. Phone cameras are always going to disappoint when it matters most.
That's just my opinion though. My phone is just a camera for those spur of the moment times... And my expectations are low... But at least I got something. ?
I'm okay with voiding the warranty, since I almost never have any hardware issues, and software issues are (almost) always fixable.

Is anybody else considering switching to a nexus?

I have missed my nexus 5 ever since i gave it up for the s5 and now the g4.
Anybody else gonna switch when the new nexus comes out?

Just my 2 cents worth, but I would actually wait until the Sprint update ZV6 (releasing now), see if it fixes the lag/touch and other issues we are experiencing. I am confident we will eventually have an unlocked bootloader, but as long as we don't lose our root method -it really isn't required since i'd rather run a stock modified anyway (for myself at least).
Rumors show it to be less of a phone than the G4. If it was equal I would have considered it.
Smaller Screen, no rear buttons, no laser focus, no spectrum analyzer, no SD card, lower res camera, less RAM, Non removable battery.
It does add two tone flash like HTC phones (better white balance). But I love what G4 does in that space, Auto White Balance is amazing on G4.
G4 doesn't feel like a phablet, but has the screen of one.

I don't feel lag/touch. However I did HAVE to remove my screen protector, that was definitely messing it up (never happened on any phone prior). The phone feels zipper than my HTC M9.
I'm not confident at all we'll get an unlocked bootloader. I think carriers won't allow it. Just like Verizon blocks unlockable HTC phones. Things are moving towards more lockdown, not away.
Might see it on T-Mobile or something.
Also I looked at the unlock procedure for the European models. First step is enter Bootloader. I can't, it zips right past it. Maybe I'm doing something dumb.
Also I'm not saying an update would allow entering the bootloader.
Someone also posted a chat with LG on this topic that there is some technical reason it's not possible to do on the non European models. That's might be B.S.

Yeah im not very confident we will see a bootloader unlock, if they would have let us unlock it from the get go we would have fantastic aosp roms already, i willing to take the compromise of a nexus in lieu of stock android and bootloader unlock right out of the box.

Even if all the US carriers allowed the bootloader to be unlocked this instance without voiding your warranty it still would not matter. There doesn't seem to be that much interest with this phone in the modding/dev community. I doubt that will change because everyone is always waiting/looking out for the next big thing is it is doubt we will see a surge this late after it is released.
I am just keeping this phone to get used to the fact that rooting and modding phone is going to get increasingly difficult as time goes on. The good days are over
Really wish the One Plus One would give non-gsm some love.
We may never get an official unlock, i bet there will be a workaround of some sort just like the G, G2, G3. If not, this would be the first G series that doesn't get a recovery workaround. I've been working on the LG series from the start, not giving up now.
Just waiting on the new ZV6 update. We should also have M being their flagship.
My last phone was a Nexus 5 and I prefer the G4. The battery life is just way better and my extra batteries makes it sweeter. I do wish G4 has vanilla android, but the G4 is good enough.

I agree, most developers have chosen their phone for the season.
I had an HTC M9, just got it replaced and gave it to my wife. I really looked carefully (Spent way to much time). But this is one awesome phone. Assuming I don't run into reliability issues some folks have.
I see quite a few regrets in the XDA Samsung Forums which I monitored closely.
One plus about how we are rooted is, it won't void warranty (you can get it back to pure stock). Samsung you are screwed if you have an issue.
HTC you can relock and most techs won't care if it's relocked. If the tech saw S-Off on an HTC and knew what it was (some do) you'd be screwed.
I just used Ut-Oh to replace my M9 that had S-Off, so that's another plus.
Will be curious what HTC's next phone looks like. It has quite a distance to catch up. I'd much rather have wireless charging than a solid metal body.
I came from a S6 Edge 64gb which I got bored with and gave to my wife and got this phone. I think this phone is awesome. The S6 Edge doesn't have anything on this!
SD card support with removable battery were huge factors! The only downside is the locked bootloader with no TWRP support

Little late to the party, just picked one of these up

Called a bunch of stores within an hour of me before I found one that still had a brand new one in stock. Manufactured in April 2016 so hopefully no bootloop issues (fingers crossed). For the price... impossible to beat value wise. $4/mo more than one of the "mid level" offerings like the Galaxy J7 and annihilates those in all categories. Have a Diztronic TPU case and a PNY 128GB card arriving tomorrow for it, so far its been great. Was going to see about leaving it unrooted with all the bloat disabled/uninstalled but after having a rooted G2 for over 2 years and no ads... can't deal with the spam so I'll unlock/root it and go from there.
Also very cool to see so much support out there still for this thing. Hoping it lasts me as long as my G2 did. I did have a G3 briefly on VZW before I switched to T-Mo and that one was great too. Kind worried with the direction the G5 is going but anyway... Very happy.
Also the store that had this new G4 still had a new G3 as well... go figure. If they had a current price vs $400 not updated since 2015... I dunno lol. I paid $349 for this G4 which is a damn steal for what you get. I'll pass on the $700-$800 "flagships" because I don't need to render video for Pixar while playing Pokemon Go and telling someone they are wrong on facebook...

Glad you got one. It's a great phone. Next time, stop by swappa.com/buy/lg-g4-tmobile. You can get a like new device for a greatly cheaper price. And if you have the replacement insurance through T-Mo like I do, 3rd party sold phones like these are covered 100%. Been doing this for the past 3 years now.
Will def check that site out thanks. But... After having used phones I'll do the new thing when I can. I have half a mind to pick that new G3 up as a spare or a gift or something.
But this is easily the best phone I have had except for maybe my Vzw G2 before someone walked off with it... No idea but that phone FLEW...
Got the Tpu case in just now (Diztronic like always) and the PNY card. Time to root and load up the music etc... Also ordered a Qi charging sticker for charging. Really really really hoping this thing stays solid and does not suffer from bootloops...
Edit... Rofl they do indeed want $400 for that G3... I paid $349 for this G4...
Great phone
Love this phone, got it two months ago for $250 brand new after haggling with customer care. Came from the Samsung S5 and it's quite a step up, I'm rooted using latest version of Turbo's Enterprise rom and it's night and day from stock.
Congrats on the purchase.
Yeah I just rooted tonight without incident. Still deciding if I want to go with a rom or not. Phone is fast as hell as is, I've got ads blocked, bloat disabled/uninstalled and I get 7GB a month of tethering for free from T-Mo already... Mainly rooted to get rid of the ads.

This is completely false. I've sim unlocked easily while bootloader unlocked and rooted. Just be stock based, not cm, and you'll be fine. I used the tmo sim unlock app right after I met the requirements and sim unlocked easily. I restored to cm immediately afterwards.
I recommend making a backup and flashing micro's stock zip build and trying the sim unlock app. If you're still having issues, check if you meet tmo's sim unlock requirements. (device paid off, device on the account long enough, enough payments have been made if prepaid.)

I recommend making a backup and flashing micro's stock zip build and trying the sim unlock app. If you're still having issues, check if you meet tmo's sim unlock requirements. (device paid off, device on the account long enough, enough payments have been made if prepaid.)

Which brand's phone you like the most?

I personally like the Samsung brand.
Huawei
Sony
This would be soo much better if we had a poll.
My brand preference changes from time to time. Use to really like Xiaomi but have been a bit disappointed by them lately so am considering something else.
I use to like HTC back in the day, however they're no longer available locally.
Redmi
well... i dont really have an unique brand that i like the most, but i will go with Xiaomi, Samsung and maybe Apple
For the hate... i hate Motorola because of their only one system update even on most expensive phones, the fact that the system updates from them literally destroys your device update by update and because they do literally evertything possible to block you from unlocking your bootloader and if you unlock it you cant relock it to be in the same way that it used to be before you unlocked.
Damn i hate Motorola

Motorola still allows bootloader to be unlocked.
The part u said expensive your not wrong I brought Motorola G7 back in 2019 in June or July I believe it cost 300$ on Amazon trust me it doesn't even have 128gb and only 4g ram.
It does have few custom ROM but not a lot I thought it was gonna get more ahead a time before I brought the phone I only checked to see if it had TWRP/lineage os didn't checked others also didn't knew orangefox was thing back then when I got phone. I had phone now for 3 years now I'm gonna keep phone until something happens to it then I'm probably gonna buy new phone. Most phones only last up to few years of course depending how long u use it everyday my phone probably not gonna last another 3 years eventually something gonna happen to it like battery or even hardware.
