Root Verizon s6 edge - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Is there a way to root my verizon s6 edge, g925vvru4bog9. And does it really matter if I end up tripping Knox?

Not sure. I'm just watching the forums for news.

Waiting for root as well, really not digging the bloated stock ROM. Wonder if there's at least a way to disable OTA update checks so it doesn't keep bugging us to update

You need to disable DT Ignite.
Read this article for a good summary. Basically, it allows carriers to load apps without your permission.

Yeah I'm pretty upset I accidentally clicked yes on the OTA. I just got the edge 6 today and was really looking forward to rooting it. So pissed it's now on 5.1.1, on to the waiting game...

Good read, i'll check it out and disable it. Verizon's done enough damage, they need to stay the hell off my phone and just provide cell service i'm paying for lol

Couldn't agree with you more. I mean their service is excellent but all these limitations are not appreciated. But I guess that's what bands us together to keep on searching for ways to seek freedom between the cracks.

What's needed to work on the Bootloader

What are we needing in order to figure out how to unlock or bypass the AT&T Bootloader?
I downloaded the stock files and have the aboot.mbn and the sbl1/sdi.mdn files. I have never worked on bootloader files before, but have some experience modding kernel and ROM level code.
This may be ignorant on my part - but since we have the files, couldn't we open and manipulate the code that is currently restricting 3rd party recoveries, kernels and ROMS?
What is needed? And/or, could we not utilize the modified bootloaders from another device with similar architecture? Perhaps like the Note 3 or even the S4; not to mention the T-Mobile S5? Since the T-Mobile and AT&T versions of all Samsung phones are almost identical, I would assume that would be the easist route - at least to help determine the differences that are restricting our device.....
Let me know if anyone needs these files or has info on what to look for within them.... I'm happy to mod anything on my end.
Thanks !
Because it is locked we can't just flash over it with another one due to signatures and miss match.
Need to research into the os and associated code to find an exploit that can be used like safestrap.

Or if someone that works at AT&T or Samsung would be nice enough to leak a signing key or a signed unlocked bootloader.
Key from Tmobile S5
T-mobile S5 is rooted. Can we find the signing key used for Tmobile phones? Is there is a remote chance keys are same?
Will recoveries on Tmobile and ATT phone be same?

Thats a good question. I wonder if we know how many keys the S5 will accept for signed updates? I.e. Is there a Samsung and a AT&T key for all S5's or is it per model or is it derived somehow from the IEMI.
Why would the developers even waste their time on the AT&T S5? They know the story behind it. Same ol' thing. I would rather have them actually develop roms on the T-Mobile S5, which we all can use btw, instead of wasting time on trying to unlock the bootloader. If it could be hacked, it would have, LONG AGO!

Well to be fair, if you took the best developers and hardware/software hackers in the world and put them in a room with an amazing salary.. it would be hacked..
So lets not say that its impossible. It is just extremely difficult and beyond the scope of the few developers (if any) that are still around trying to crack into it. The problem is that there aren't that many people that just want to sit around trying to figure out a way to make it work, they would rather move to different phones and carriers instead, because its just overall easier.

Yep, hate to burst anyone's bubble who has a G900A, but it's not going to happen... EVER. Options are to hold out for a developer edition phone from Samsung or get a T-mobile version... which is exactly the same thing minus the restrictions. Or if you are pissed at AT&T, just find another carrier. Maybe if there was enough churn from this, they would stop doing it.

No. Again, there is a difference from root and unlocking the bootloader. I was referring to the bootloader as that's what this thread is discussing. I never said it was impossible, it is quite possible just takes a lot of hard work. My prediction is that it will never be fully unlocked.

I think the problem is SELinux is an extremely tough nut to crack(and I'm guessing you could easily get a six figure payday for an unknown SELinux/PaX kernel exploit in the black market at this point). Pretty much every linux kernel vulnerability exploit code I've seen fails on all of my boxes with SELinux, PAX and hardened GCC(one of these protection mechanisms always ends up killing the exploit before it can deliver its payload). Do we know exactly what SELinux and PAX(if any) features were enabled in the .config that Samsung used to compile the kernel (and if a hardened toolchain was used for the userland)? At least from what I've seen a properly configured SELinux box with Pax and hardened GCC is one of the toughest boxes to crack. I guess what we can hope for is that someone at Samsung did something stupid otherwise its quite possible we could be waiting for awhile(unless a key or signed unlocked bootloader leaks).
(edit: This applies to getting root through a kernel exploit.(Although with SELinux that isn't enough you need to not only be UID0 root but you also have to switch the role to sysadm_r. The bootloader I'm not 100 percent sure on the secure boot process but my understanding from reading other dev's threads is that this will be even harder than getting a root escalation in the SELinux kernel). Although if we could crack the bl we could just inject root easily.

Lollipop, or wait for root?

So after all the hype for Lollipop and whatnot, I've been wondering what exactly the differences are between Lollipop and KK. Other than the theme, the lockscreen notifications (which we already have with moto display), and ART. Are there any other major differences?
Furthermore, what's the general opinion on the odds of root being achieved? I know it's more likely on KK, but is it worth waiting to update for, or should I take the Lollipop update when it's rolled out? I don't miss much coming from a rooted device, other than the firewall. Xposed would be nice but I can probably live without it.
Basically I just want to weigh my options for when the time comes.
I will wait.
Also - what can now be achieved without root?
For example:
A lot of apps now support functions that required root before
Tasker
Greenify
Etc.
Being able to disable apps somewhat replaces the need for titanium

Is there a way to disable the updates coming from Verizon? I want my phone as "stock" as possible in case we ever get root so I'm trying to freeze the HD Calling/VoLTE update from installing but not sure if there is currently a way to do that without having root?
New to the VZ and Droid scene
I just got my Turbo and that update so far has been more than just the Volte after doing an FDR I actually noticed a little better responsiveness. I am looking into battery life now. Even without root or unlocked bootloader it is a pretty cool phone. Aside from the battery draining bloat, does anybody have big drain issues with command center after the update ( that Verizon did instore )

Absolutely! Every day I find a new app that replaces a need for root. If anyone else has any other similar discoveries (apps that can do things we normally needed root for) please don't hesitate!
Example: My GPS was toggled by itself once (I think through tasker), so I have high hopes that there is some way to toggle GPS without root.
-I'm trying to replicate what happened and what variables I used in tasker.

Do you currently have a choice?

So who is waiting on Root? DIscussion

So who is waiting to root the S6 to see if Samsung Pay requires a Non-Tripped KNOX?
I am seriously on the fence about it, in my opinion it is about a 50% chance it will be required, and even then will I really use it all the time?
On the other hand I love root and the apps I have that require it.
What are your thoughts, Waiting or no?
*We are assuming that any root methods will trip KNOX. Even if root is achieved without tripping KNOX a ROM requiring a recovery WILL trip it anyways*
I'm in the same boat.. So much so that I'm debating if I want to keep this device. I enjoy custom roms way too much. Coming from a Lg G2 running 5.0.2 AICP rom, it was really great.
More worried that with Tmobile and JUMP if I ever need to get a replacement device, that KNOX will cause issues when they receive my device. With my G2, i returned it but after I reverted to stock.
This is the first time I'm actually afraid to root and install custom recovery. I only have 6 days to decide if I want to keep this before i have to send in my g2 for jump

Two things to keep in mind:
T-Mobile doesnt care about JUMP even in warranty situations. Revert it back to stock and go on your merry way. Only Samsung cares and under JUMP you have warranty care as well, so T-Mo not Samsung takes care of the claims/replacement device
AOSP Roms may not come to the S6 for a while, at least not stable. The Exynos processor is notorious for poor support from AOSP roms like AICP, CM, SLiM and others.. Just a heads up
I will put this right here the next big root is here.

I'm aware Aosp isnt stable, which is fine. I'm ok with at least a stock base thats been modded. Custom kernal would be great to make the phone more energy efficient

We know root is available, it's been available since before the pre-order even went live. It still trips Knox though, and that's the discussion.
Personally, I'm waiting until either Knox can be bypassed, or we get confirmation that Samsung Pay won't need it. Somehow I doubt either will happen, but I'm willing to wait a while to find out.
tlxxxsracer: Don't count on custom kernels, but that goes without saying. A modified base would be nice, AOSP would be wonderful but unrealistic. Honestly at this point, the only reason I want root is Titanium Backup, an ad blocker and putting the Nexus dialer/contacts on the phone. Touchwiz dialer is simply awful.
Don't care. Rooted. Can't stand ads and need tethering (AT&T corporate account). But I would root just to block the ads. I accept the consequences and if I can't use Samsung pay, I'll simply use Google wallet, which will work everywhere Apple Pay is accepted anyway.

Joe, reread my posts. I am choosing NOT TO ROOT, because I'm holding off for an option that either doesn't trip knox, or confirmation that tripping knox doesn't void Samsung Pay. Stated that in my first post.

Android 5.1.1 OTA being rolled out on T-Mobile for the S6 edge!

RELEVANT TO US BECAUSE WHEN WE GET THE UPDATE, IT LOCKS THE BOOTLOADER.
IF THEY LOCK IT FOR THE S6 EDGE, THEY'LL LOCK IT FOR THE S6!
DO NOT TAKE THE OTA IF YOU DON'T WANT A LOCKED BOOTLOADER.
Unassuming Galaxy S6 edge users are in for a surprise, as T-Mobile appears to be rolling out a freshly cooked OTA based on Android version 5.1.1 Lollipop for the device. The catch, however, it is so far reported only on the T-Mobile network.
XDA forums user Sunderwear mentioned about the OTA a couple of hours back (at the time of writing this story). Urged by other users of the device, the poster also uploaded a video of his Galaxy S6 edge running the latest firmware. The video can be found at the end of this article.
As noted from the narration, the update also locks the bootloader on the device.
So, how many of you have already received the update? What do you think of it?
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/2015/04/29/android-5-1-1-ota-being-rolled-out-on-t-mobile-for-the-s6-edge/

This type of thing might happen with a lot of updates. You need to remember the rooting/moding community is very small compared to the people who just use their phone as is. So if anything I think its weird that someone in this community got the update.

They're really not, actually. I imagine it would boot. My guess is touch screen wouldn't work though.

Really? So it might work but register touches opposite of our phone?

I find that there are only minor things I need that require root but I no-longer need the overhaul that I needed with HTC. It's too weird.

Damn I wish this would leak for AT&T. 5.0.1 TW has a bigger memory leak than stock 5.0.1 on my Nexus. This needs to be rolled out ASAP, but I know it won't.

Will anything past OE2 ever get Root? (OG5,OG7,etc..)

Anyone know of any active developement regarding the 925V variant? Way too nice not to have root.
There is zero development.
Zero KNOWN progress. Who knows for sure though. King root might work for us one day or it might not.
There wasn't much development on my tmboile s5 either. What phones do have good development these days?
I guess mostly just Nexus devices.

I've stuck with my ATT Note3 on TMO, and TMO Note4. My son has a Sprint S6 Edge on TMO and it has surprisingly quite a bit of development. If I knew anything regarding locked vs. unlocked BL's I'd have a go with this 925V. Just really surprised at the lack of development for this device. Sucks!
Unfortunately, it seems that we've been left in the dark. Surely one of the many devs would have a thread going with some sort of progress update if any were working on it.
@spadz93 That's kinda what I'm thinking. Too bad. I use way too many root functions to even consider keeping my 925V. Really nice hardware either way. I'll probably look for a TMO variant.
Verizon sucks anyway. Worst service I've ever had. I liked T-Mobile way better. I have constant dropped calls, missed texts etc with Verizon.
I would pay good money to have some development for this device... without development, its useless... anyone interested? pm me =]

I wouldn't go so far as to call it useless... It's still a solid phone with decent hardware. Just because you can't root it and install custom ROMs doesn't make it useless. I'm more interested in a phone that works consistently everyday than I am the ability to push the hardware to the point of random reboots and overheating. Once I gave up root for 5.1 I've had next to zero issues with the phone and I like it much more.

Yea, my statement is a little exaggerated but no xposed is huge for me personally. I like to play with my phone and customize it. Without root and xposed, I can't do that like I could with my s4 so it bothers me
What upsets me is the fact that devs give up trying to root a phone if a solution doesn't come within a month or two, if the phone is the only variant that still doesn't have a root and it will take more effort than a few tweaks to do it. I've seen it over and over again with so many phones. If I knew how to even begin to look for a root on the phone and I had the money to buy phones that I could burn in the process, then I'd totally work at it.
what I dont understand is theres ppl with the Note 4 that are able to root 5.1.1 using King Root and no one has tried it on any firmware beyond OE2 for us yet..
I know one person said it worked for him on OF1 but need more to confirm before I update and update all my ROMs.

I enjoy it.... I also had it since day one. I unrooted mine and took the updates. Lol I need AOSP and we were never given the time to achieve it.
