Wireless Tether - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?

I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?

Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

Heh, ok. I've got their UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT 2GB plan 75$ and it incudes hotspot/tethering.

Anyone care to share what to edit to get WiFi tethering? Flashing a different ROM is not really what I wanna do right now, would like to just do it on my newly unlocked stock rom Turbo

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.

Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.

Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

+1 for xTether. It works great for me. I used it all day to play on my tablet while the wife was Black Friday shopping.

I did this and am having no luck

So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.

Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?

It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.

Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)

[Q] stock out of the box 2.2 froyo wireless tethering?

I just got a brand new out of the box stock captivate, sgh-i897, i897uckb2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, froyouckb2. I have the mobile ap in wireless settings, but when I click I get a message saying not allowed. How what is my least invasive option of turning this on without paying att a ridiculous plan premium? Can it be done without flashing a custom rom? I did that to a previous cappy and had constant problems. I am not very savy at all in these matters and just simply want the dumb guy how to make wireless tethering work for me.
You have to root first. then install Titanium backup from the market. Free version is fine.
Go into titanium where is says to restore apps and you will find a list of all the aps on your phone. delete tethering manager and you should be able to tether. The message saying you need a thethering plan will still be on the mobile AP page but it should work.
Just an FYI. AT&T is tracking ppl that are using Tethering without paying for tethering. They are starting to add the tethering charge to the bill, without telling, because they assume you have read the contract. They even have gone as far as dropping you out of the data connection plan.

It's hit or miss though. There are tons of people here that say they have tethered up to several gigs and have never gotten a notice. Most of them seem to think it is from iPhone cracks. Who really knows for sure...
I have tethered for quite a while now (since about 2009, even before my captivate, without the plan. I don't use it as much as those people, but do use it regularly, and have never been notified. I look at it like this: I don't think they will cancel a plan - they want our money. If they add thethring to my plan without telling me, I will just simply take it off. that's that.
edit:
and no, I'm not trying to rehash the whole tethering/plan argument. Just trying to let the OP know what I have read...

grab the zip I uploaded. unzip it. run SuperOnneClick in the folder. Make sure your phone is on AND in debugging mode (in settings/apps/development)
click Rook, then, after that finishes, click Allow non market apps. may take a couple of times.
The version I attached is the only one I could get to successfully root stock 2.2
Let me know if you have problems.
edit: i corrected the path to debugging mode (above).

[Q] VZW Moto X as Hotspot

So I am strongly considering the Moto X not that Verizon has Moto Maker and the 32GB verizon. The one thing I love on my current phone running CM10.2 is the ability to tether my laptop to it for internet access without getting charged extra by verizon while I travel. Usually in a monthly billing cycle when traveling with work I'll consume about 20GBs of data. Can I do this with the Moto X without getting charged tether fees? Do I need to root it to do this?
FYI: I'm i'm on an unlimited plan
If you root with RockMyMoto, yes..
For using Wifi Tether for Root app, see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449534 You MUST use the specific version now linked in the first post, or it wont work.... In other words, do NOT get the version from the Play store. (I'm using this way with my Rooted X, also unlimited plan)
To use the built in tethering app see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443562 (I haven't tried it, but there are many reports in that thread of it working).
If you don't want to root, then you could try Foxfi. Not sure if it works, I've never used it.
I have always used THIS, on multiple phones. I'm on the 3.3 beta 2 and it works fine. Go into settings, and make sure the device profile is Generic ICS/JB (wlan0), and check the WiFi driver reload, MSS clamping, and Routing fix options.

For some reason I couldn't get that version to work on my Verizon X. While the PC and tablet saw the X, it saw it as WLAN0, and never properly connected to the phone.
The thread I linked to has a patched version that works properly for me, including seeing the "hot spot" as the SSID I set on the phone, and letting the PC and tablet connect to the phone and get to the internet.
The x is awesome for one. All u gotta do is root and follow the thread to use built In tethering appreciate. Works great. Or better yet flash Nitro's eclipse ROM. Its all done and its a great rom

I did notice the wlan0 where on the other device I had u could change it or use the ssid, but my tab and others will connect? The initial connection always funks up, usually just have to cycle WiFi from the device and cycle tether too. U try reboot, fix perms, and cache/dalvik wipes? Haven't tried modifying that system apk, heard about some issues and this never gives much, if any.

I tried everything. Yes.
I liked the way wifi tether worked on my past phones. Using the patched copy found in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449534 , which is also needed for the GNex w/4.2, works just like it did on my Bionic, Thunderbolt, and other past phones. No issues. After initial config and allowing SU, just launch the app, tap to start tethering, go to my PC, Tablets, etc.. and connect and go.
The APK is originally from https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1661#c109 however, I just noticed lower down in that discussion a patch was added to the experimental 3.4 ( https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1661#c197 ) so I might try that.
I don't feel the need to mess with those system files to use the phone's built in tethering app. I don't have to. I only offered that because some were using it since Wifi Tether for Root wasn't working.

editig one cell in the system settings to get the built-in hotspot app to work is hardly messing with the system files. i've done this on my last three phones and they've all worked flawlessly. plus the built-in app has decent security features.

I know you read the one thread I posted a link to as you asked about doing the SQL edit, and posted a screen shot from your D4.. Its OP talks about replacing a bunch of APK files which are system files...
In Post #24 of that thread, thepolishguy the SQL tweak doesn't work.
... hence my saying I didn't want to mess with a bunch of system files.
Not to mention, side loading an APK and using it is easier. It might not be "cleaner" or seem as "integrated" but it works.
Awesome thanks everyone. I defintely plan on rooting my phone and installed xposed.

T-Mobile auto block

Hello everyone I was wondering if it were possible to be blocked from tethering. I've read all the posts on how to reenable it, and even tried the WiFi tether router app. It all worked but suddenly two days ago while I was searching the net on my laptop, the T-Mobile upsell page popped up and hasn't left since. I've tried unrooting and relocking the phone then rerooting it. I've tried stock rooted and chroma custom ROM. Any help is appreciated

so ive seen youve used your tethering allotment. every tmobile "contract" comes with tethering included to them, besides for prepaid. its unlimited tethering for the limited plans, and 3.5gb tethering for the unlimited high speed data option. nothing like what you have done will do anything. i use the tether router app, as tmobile doesnt see me tethering when i use it. theres also an option for a build.ptop edit that will help as well.
That's what I'm saying. I've done that to where they saw me as using my data and not my tethering. For me now it doesn't work anymore. The build prop edit nor the app nor the sqlite settings.db route
Maybe they're getting clever. In the uk they use deep packet analysis to find out where the packets are coming from.

Yes they did and I've tried unrooting and rerooting try to fix the problem. I've even used the WiFi tether router app by Fabio Grasso, currently he's trying to help me get it to work. I've been reading around that this is happening to T-Mobile customers though. Haven't really seen any other carriers with this problem.

I wonder how they are checking for tethering and if they are using deep packets as another member suggested. I'm hoping someone will find a work around because after all this is why we have android phones.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It is confirmed that the methods around the tether limit do not work. Once you reach your limit they block you. As for neither method works anymore.

Galaxy Note 3 Rooted- Straight Talk Tethering Stuck At "Verifying"

Straight Talk Tethering, rooted phone
Just trying to use my rooted ST note 3 for a hotspot for my little tab4 tablet. Ran the file programs but only have 2 lines with tethering info and both are set to '0'. Neither one is the providers check gateway? Line. Just a tethering provision line and a tethering automation line. When I turn on my hotspot it just runs 'verifying' and never goes anywhere. On KitKat you must have exposed to tether(plus other programs). Google caved in to the big providers and the incentive seems to be money. If you are on JB Foxfi should work from the play store.

[REQUEST] Wifi Tether and/or USB Tether

Please create a Wifi or USB Tether module for Magisk. The Magisk Tether Enabler module is no longer available. The good Wifi and USB Tether apps for rooted phones do not work with Magisk, only SuperSU. ie Wifi Tether by Fabio. Grasso. Please, I do not want to go backwards and root with SuperSU
Why can't the native tether app be used? It should work just by having net.tethering.noprovisioning=true in build.prop and entering:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
In adb or terminal. From what I've been seeing in custom ROMs at least for my Nexus 6, nobody is using tether_dun_required 0 in their builds, having to do it manually every wipe.
I never tried the module you speak of but I wouldn't be too surprised if that's why it did lol.

I do not pay extra for tethering and have unlimited phone data plan. The wifi tether app I mentioned gets around the carrier detecting tethering data and blocking it. Wifi Tether worked great fo 5 years on 2 different rooted phones using SuperSU. The developer admits issues with Magisk and Kingroot. No issues with SuperSU.
A Magisk module would would be appreciated and Im certain others would use it.

You will have to tell me exactly how to set that up. build.prop, terinal cammands, means nothing to me. If you mean turning on tether in settings, it gets blocked by the carrier.
Installing magisk modules and app that require root is better for average users anyway. And I thought magisk modules was one big advantage of magisk...

Let us know if it works, your phone model and OS.
I am not going to know if it works now mate.
I just contacted Three in the UK
I asked them about my hotspot data as i could no longer see it on their website.
They said you are on AYCE Data i was like ok ???
they said your hotspot and AYCE is combined now and i was like huh?
the person on the other end said you have unlimited Tethering.
I was like OMG gobsmacked as i was i left them a great survey.
So i didnt need this after all but if i do get any phones - i will try this method and i will report back on to this thread. (but highly likely i wont be back for awhile)
I am using a Samsung s8
Did Magisk ever made it on they app that you can install they hotspot. I have a pixel 3. If anybody try it out of it please let me know. The carrier is throttling download speeds by margin. It won't go no more then 650kbps download. But when it's the beginning of the billing cycle I can get 23mbps down. After using 15GB of hotspot it drastically throttles it. Any bypass for this would greatly be appreciated

Have you looked through the thread you're posting in? There's a link just a few posts up with commands used for enabling tethering. The prop you can set with MagiskHide Props Config and the "settings put" command you should only have to enter in terminal once (if I remember correctly).
