5.1 can be rooted with kingroot, you can then use rashr to flash custom recovery
keep in mind theres one problem with root on locked bootloader, you wont be able to mount system as r/w (you will be only able to manipulate system in recovery)

It's basically "flash", not "root" Cyanogenmod ROM. Cyanogenmod is already rooted.
If you really wish to do so, go to this link for an in-depth guide.

[Q] Upgrading to Lollipop from locked bootloader, rooted, Kitkat.

Hello all,
With news that the Z3 and Z3 compact are starting to get Lollipop today I am sure a lot of people are going to be coming to the boards asking this exact question. So I wanted to start a thread that can help people find the answer quickly. (I'll update the OP as useful info comes in.)
I am currently on a D5803 running 4.4.4, with a locked bootloader and am rooted. I used This how-to to get where I am.
What is the best way to upgrade to Lollipop for me?
Is there a way to keep root? A pre-rooted FTF file?
Will all DRM features remain?
Will I need to reinstall anything? Recovery? Busy Box? SU?
Does this upgrade require a full wipe?
Thanks for any help
If anyone wants to check if their bootloader is locked:
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration". If there is:
Bootloader unlock allowed - Yes << this means that your Bootloader is Locked
Bootloader Unlocked - Yes << this means that your bootloader is unlocked
just wonder...
i definitly want to root my Z3C.
Should i root with KK 4.4 or wait for Lollipop(and root later) !?

You root on KK then you can update to Lollipop and keep root.
The problem seems to be getting recovery working, or keeping it working. Can anyone comment on whether they've tried the below:
1) Flash pre-rooted D5803_23.1.A.0.690_Customized_NCB rooted.zip containing Lollipop 5.0.2 in TWRP
2) Flash Z3C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.3-RELEASE.flashable.zip in TWRP
3) Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip in TWRP
4) Flash the stock D5803_23.1.A.0.690_Baltic_Generic.ftf and exclude system (and data/cache from the wipe section to keep settings)?
In the other recovery threats NUT seems to think his recovery should still work?

Recovery isn't working, but I'm happy with just root for now, which works great.
I didn't flash the stock after SuperSU, don't see any reason to and works for me.

I wiped it (had too much crap on the phone anyway, so worth it), restored what I wanted with Titanium Backup when done.

I also tried with flashing lockeddualrecovery but recovery doesn't work. So need to wait for an update on that one I guess.
Any ideas about what could go bad if I don't wipe data?
Also, do you still have drm?
I succesfully flashed lolipop with this method without data wipe. I still have root and DRM keys. The only thing I lost was data of some app's with external data linked to SD card with Link2SD. And some root app's started to claim about busybox not installed properly. Besides that everything works like a charm

When you flash those do you have system read and write as well? Do we need to worry about the RICDefeat in doing all this for the upgrade? Is RICDefeat integrated into that?
1.Flash the tft of lollipop
2.Get the zip of XZDualRecovery 2.8.3 Advanced Stock Kernel from http://nut.xperia-files.com/ and supersu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
3.Flash the boot.img in AndroPlusKernel with cable on flashtool
4.Reboot in recovery
5.Flash XZDualRecovery 2.8.3 Advanced Stock and supersu
6.Enjoy
Sorry,it should be with UB
about not working recovery
Dont know it thats issue, but I have same clue.
On KitKat after applying all steps to root 4.4.4 rom recovery was working until I changed busybox.
Oryginaly busybox was in version 1.20.2-jb - with that recovery was working.
I need some other tools and updated busbox to version 1.22.1 and recovery wasnt working (starting recovery end up with bootloop, but could start to system).
Returning back to recovery 1.20.2-jb fixed problem.

I want to know about this too.
And what is a safe process for us (locked bootloader, rooted 4.4) to upgrade to 5.02 or 5.1 in the future.
I heard that unlocking bootloader will causes the camera not working properly (at least the auto mode would be messed up)
Does TWRP requiring unlocking bootloader?
Thanks guys.
I'm resurrecting this thread as I've got the same question as previous posters and I've not been able to find an answer elsewhere on the forum.
Basically, I've got a phone with a Bootloader which can't be unlocked. I upgraded/rooted it last year. It's still on KitKat. Is there any way I can upgrade it to Lollipop or Marshmallow without going through the downgrade/flash pre-rooted ROM procedure, without losing root? In other words, can I make use of TWRP which I installed in order to flash the rooted ROM last time? If so, how? (I'm not keen on using KingRoot unless somebody can convince me that handing over my IMEI info is safe.)
Thanks in advance.
Just flash a pre-rooted 5.1 zip made with prf creator whilst still on root+recovery KK. That's how I updated my M2 from rooted 4.4.4 KK to rooted 5.1 lollipop whilst retaining my locked bootloader. No sure if it's working for mm yet though this way

Nexus phones are actually very easy compared to Samsung. Rooting has nothing to do with flashing custom ROMs, you just need to unlock the bootloader. If the custom ROM is not pre-rooted you will have to do so after flashing and the instructions will vary based on the custom ROM you flashed.
Why in the newbie guide u need to root first. No, samsung is much easier and very hard to brick ur phone if u did flash it in a wrong way unlike in nexus.

Some custom ROM's come pre-rooted, meaning you don't have to do anything after installing the ROM to root the phone. Other custom ROM's are not pre-rooted so you have to root the ROM after installing it. As an example, the stock ROM is not pre-rooted so you need to follow the instructions in one of the many threads that explain how to root the stock ROM. It is nearly impossible to brick a Nexus phone as long as you have a custom recovery installed and the bootloader is unlocked.

The bootloader is already installed on your phone, it is part of the ROM. As far as unlocking the bootloader, here is one of may results returned when Googling "Unlock Nexus 6 Bootloader" You need to do some research on how to unlock, flash and root the Nexus 6, the information is there if you just search for it.

There's only two ways to brick your Nexus 6.
1. Disconnect cable while flashing bootloader.
2. Close bootloader after flashing all stock without checking if it boots.*
Other than that you can always boot into bootloader and do stuff.
* +1 That's recently happened to people: Everything is off, including Enable OEM Unlocking, and you receive a borked OTA. That happened to some people unfortunately.

Use two empty cans and 30ft of string.

Is it really worth rooting?

Seems like the root methods mentioned on the forums are dangerous. Now.. I love a good rooted phone. But why couldn't I Just odin twrp and flash a SU update zip? Is it only because the bootloader is locked? Why can't I unlock the bootloader and odin twrp and SU#?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless you are on an old rom, the only option to get root would be to get another phone. This phone will never again have root.
Still on Lollipop here, phone still blows.

Yes bootloader lock inhibits from directly flashing anything if ure on lolipop u can inject root with the modified system image. And having root is the onlything that makes the 991 worth keeping if i couldnt have root then out the door it goes. Also root is all you get no twrp clockwork mod nothin again due to locked bootloader

Yea the only root method for us is 1st lolipop only zv6 firmware which isnt mentiond any where. 2nd due to locked bl and no workaround like loki or bump for g2 and g3 it stops us from gaining root that way. Plus if im not mistaken all the root methods on previous g series have been done throught adb one clicks or stump root. But on g4 only way is to replace the system partition with one that has root injected. Its really not that bad. Im lazy and copy and paste all commands. But in the end we still only have root. With minimal system r/w acsses.
Now i may be wrong but last i heard this was only method.

Quoted for truth. Holy sh*t.
I like this phone, but I'm SOOO ready to move on. I think I'm going to try the Note 7 this year.... But only if and when they announce root has been achieved on the Note 7. I'm on ZV6 rooted, and I'd rather have root than the latest and greatest OS so LG can keep MM and N. Don't need it if I gotta give up root.

Well, I think it is not possible to root without unlocking the bootloader. It is recommended to backup ta partition. Unless you backup the ta partition you will not be able to use x reality engine, software updates etc..
I don't know whether a prerooted firmware can be used to root without unlocking the bootloader.

1. No exploit has been found, you indeed need to unlock BL to gain root access. You will lose usage of x reality engine etc once unlocked.
2. But, you are able to use x reality engine etc. as long as the DRM fix is in place in new kernel.
3. You cannot use anything else than official firmware as long as the bootloader is locked.

Not sure the backup TA tool works or not in MM, if not working you'll need down to LP first.
Okay, if you can backup your TA in 305, then yes, lock bl via Sony offical unlock site and flash the elf kernel in this thread with flashtool. Remember to flash the supersu in twrp too.

I think it is not possible to backup TA on 305 because the ta backup tool only supports LP kernel.
You don't have to flash supersu because the kernel contains the latest supersu build.

If you don't care void warranty or come with no warranty, you can just unlock the BL now.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/03/17/guide-to-installing-xperia-lollipop-using-xperifirm-and-flashtool/
If you need to keep the warranty, you'll need to run XperiFirm to download any 152/200 firmware and follow this guide to create the image to flash.
Did anyone experience any bug in the kernel?

installing your kernel now probably need a day or two to tell any problem from your kernel or 305

Early testing showed no problem. DRM patched and twrp working fine but default set at enforcing mode, can you set the kernel to permissive mode?
OMG, opencamera can't recording 4K video(actually FHD seems not work too) on 305 while no problem on 224/253. I've to roll back and stick with XPower V3 now.
It would be so nice if you could give us the complete rom to be flashed via twrp I don't have a pc

You can just flash the SuperSU+Aroma+2.78-SR1+v3.zip in twrp, it got options to pick system mode or system-less mode.
