Trying to get my fire back to stock but having loads of issues... - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I recently bought a kindle fire 7 gen 5 and decided to root it and put the play store on which all went well. THEN, I made the mistake of allowing someone to talk me into changing my launcher from stock to apex. At first I liked how it was a familiar interface but soon I realized that many apps either crashed or wouldn't load. So I tired to switch back to the stock launcher but Apex refused to give up power over my fire. So then I tried to do a factory reset which just seemed to ignore the stock launcher and just sit there with a black screen. So now I tired to ADB sideload the stock firmware from amazon which I thought was going well but it hit 80% and gave me an error of "* failed to read command: No error" and so now my fire is sitting here with the message "Patching system image unconditionally..." and won't budge. Any advice will be much appreciated.
As to the methods of rooting I did, I just used the batch files from rootjunkysdl and it worked beautifully until the whole launcher change....

I did much the same to mine when setting up Google Now as the default launcher. When I added a second adult profile it didn't have a launcher to work with. A factory reset didn't work so I resorted to the ADB method of restoring the stock flash. This worked OK on mine, so you might want to re-download the stock rom (or check the MD5), The stock rom from Amazon was actually an earlier version than what was on the Fire 7 so ADB was my only option.
I followed this fella's guide

I tried that and that is where I got to 80% and it failed, I bought 3 of these tablets for my family, is there a way to use a backup file from one that is stock and apply it via SD card that you know of?
*Edit, as a desperation movie I tried a different USB cable and it was able to load the stock file just fine. Happy to be back to square one

I tried the SD card route first (copied the stock firmware image to the root of the internal storage) then checked for updates. It found the stock image OK, but refused to install it as it was older than the one already flashed to the Fire 7.

Did you try fastboot into one of the other recovery options CM/TWRP? They won't have any version restrictions and fire right up.

Retore Kindle to factory

I have a 7" kindle fire HD. When I first got it I rooted it with QemuRoot. I wasn't too worried about doing much, I just added halo launcher and the play store. Everything was good until the launcher quit working. To make a long story short, I had lost root and got it back via Bin4ry. Once again, was lazy and just installed the launcher and went about life.
I lost root again, restored it with Bin4ry and disable updates using KFFA. The launcher works, but I can't get it to be the home button default and there is a lot of junk on there from when I had a freetime membership for my kid.
I would like to reset the device to factory and start over, what do I need to do? Looking at KFFA options 3,4 or 22 look like they would apply, I just wanted to find out what is the preferred method to accomplish this without screwing anything up.

Either 3 or 4 will work. If you don't remove OTA updates, the Kindle will get an updated pushed onto it and your root will break every time when the Kindle updates. So make sure to remove OTA updates using KFFA as well.

So I ended up using option 4 and a factory cable, for some reason it would not boot into fast mode via regular usb cable in KFFF. When it got done rebooting, I got a message asking if I wanted to use kindle or holo launcher (which I had previously installed).
That bit confused my, i thought that it would also have been deleted during the restore process?!!? Holo launcher & locker are installed and appears fully functional. Like i said before I would like to get this back to factory and start over. Superuser is on there also, did I forget a step or is there something additional that I need to do? I do not see any other apps other than what it came with.
It did take me to the set up process like on a new kindle.
Sounds like all it did was wipe the data folder. It has to go into fastboot to restore it to stock, if it doesn't want to do it during the process in kffa you can always use a mobile terminal on the kindle itself and type
Code:
su -c "reboot bootloader"

Did you use KFFA with a factory cord or a fastboot? When using KFFA, it is best to use a fastboot cord. Booting it into fastboot from USB can be done but I found it did not happen as often using KFFA. You can also use this tool here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254 and he has a video at the bottom of this page http://androidcowboy.com/2013/06/how-to-return-kindle-fire-hd-to-stock/
You can also try your steps again and try number 3.

It was in fastboot, I used a factory cable to do so before I started KFFA. The screen said "fastboot kindle" or something to that effect.

That was my thought, to try it again, I just like to get other thoughts and opinions from those who are much more knowledgeable about andoid operating systems than myself. I will try another wipe tomorrow (option 3) and see if it has the desired effect.

OK, so here is how I worked it tonight. KFFA is a great utility but something hiccuped today. So here is the work around I just did.
First thing is root is needed for the restore utility to work. So root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351201
Now you can restore to 7.2.3 and root (all one process) using KFHD System.img Restore. Choose the "KFHD_SRT_v1.3.0- 7.2.3 (separate option for restoring factory recovery)" download here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254 This will root your tablet and give you a couple Gapps and Play Store.
Then use KFFA to "Disable Amazon OTA updates." Make sure to look for a Super User request right after you click to proceed so the process suceeds.
Now you can proceed with using the installed Play Store or installing a 2nd bootloadr/custom rom
This is the process that worked for me. Make sure you give the restore tool plenty of time to work. It can be done by booting your KFHD into fastboot by using fastboot commands or a factory cable. Here is a video concerning the restore tool listed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-8lTMLCGfE

I didn't need to root, I have a factory cable (assuming that was why I needed root to get into fastboot?!?). I tried KFHD_SRT_v1.3.5- 7.3.0 and it worked fine, except for some reason I could not turn on wireless. I am trying it again to see if it works out better for me. If not, I will try version 1.3.0

You need root to use the restore tool, not get into fastboot, like I stated. If you are not rooted, you can not use the restore tool listed. Use the USB cord to root and the fastboot cord to restore. The fastboot cord to restore to 7.2.3 so you have a matching boot.IMG. Then when flashing a 2nd bootloader and custom rom, you will most likely not bootloop or get a red screen.
I don't mind helping but you should read the help I offer before disregarding. I never BS anyone one here. I really suggest you read some topics on this or you might end up with a paper weight.

When I restored using KFHD, the image was already rooted, or so the title stated. When I replied I had already done what i replied about before I read your suggested route. It's still not right, so I am following your route and hoping the kids sleep long enough for me to finish it in one sitting!!

When I used Bin4ry, it added a second version of superuser to it (not sure if that is important or not), then I chose option 1 (Restore factory rooted with SuperSU) in KFHD. I now have a red triangle asking me to reboot or reset..
I ran option 1 with KFHD 1.3.5, back to working at least, only one version of superuser and the wireless is working. So far so good, and almost out of time right now.

You did something wrong. Your lucky you only got a red triangle and not a red screen. You need to restore again. When you are done, before exiting, clear the CASHE and data (think this is option 3 but confirm). You should already have root so use KFHD_SRT_v1.3.0- 7.2.3 (separate option for restoring factory recovery.)
Always make sure ADB and allowing apps from unknown sources is turned on on your tablet. I always turn my tablet to never sleep or an hour so it stays away and turn the brightness up on the screen when modding. Every tool you use, reconfirm the settings are the same.

It seems to be working great now. Updates disable, holo launcher installed and no more freeze ups (part of why I wanted to redo it). Thank you very much LinearEquation for your help once again. Now my 2 year old can go back to watching youtube and learning educational gem like saying WTF over and over (yes, mom loved that one..of course it was my fault).
Another reason why I wanted to restore it was that I had a freetime membership for a while, a ton of apps and books were downloaded but when the membership was canceled the apps remained it just said "you don't own this" when you tried to use it...very frustrating to a young kid.

[Q] Recover data. Red Triangle

So I got the Red Triangle, and I can choose reboot your kindle (which doesn't solve any problem) and Reset to Factory Defaults. Is there any way I can access my kindle folders from the computer. I have some important documents which I don't want to loose
Nope, but that won't matter, because you probably just need to reflash the system partition to fix whatever you did. What exactly did you do before this happened?
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD running CM10.1 Tablet UI using xda-developers app
Actually I did nothing. The only thing I noticed is that it was low in space for some while. Out of sudden it froze, I closed the tablet and then that message showed. So what do you recommend? Do you have a link with the recommended step. You say I might be able to save my personal data?
I tried one time to root... half year ago. But I gave up, I had a bad tutorial... I don't think I made changes to the system.

A red triangle is just a soft brick. This should be a simple enough fix in regards to what can happen. A red triangle means that the Kindle is, for one reason or another, not booting into the software.
You will need to make or buy a factory fastboot cable so you can access the bootloader. This is the only thing you can do at this point. When you get that cable follow these instructions/tutorials
First you need to restore using KFHD System.img Restore Tool located http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254 This will have you restored with root access.
That root will break when Amazon does an OTA update unless you use Kindle Fire FirstAid to "remove OTA updates." You can go ahead and use it to install Goggle Apps/ Play Store as well. Find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888
Then you can install a 2nd bootloader and TWRP if you want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848 are both a way. One flashes and one uses ADB commands to pus/pull.
Then slap a ROM on that bad boy. Most of them are found after one of the tutorials listed. About 2/3rds down through the tutorial. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
If you get stuck in TWRP without a ROM or a bootloop then use Stunts fix to get a ROM pushed onto TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459498
Here is a great help thread where the 2nd bootloader and TWRP write ups are simplified a bit. I recommend a read of that too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347170

[Q] KFHD 7" 2013 red screen to fastboot logo

Hey everyone I totally screwed up my new KFHD and I would love some help. I tried to root it a couple days ago with the KFSOWI all in one tool and it seemed to work for a few minutes. SuperSU installed correctly and installed its binary but when I tried to use the root explorer in ES File Explorer it said that it failed so I opened up SuperSU again and it told me it needed to install the binary again as if it wasn't rooted. It failed to install it and Root Checker told me it wasn't rooted so I tried to re-root it with the same KFSOWI tool.
This is when it got messed up. The tool said it rooted successfully again but when I tried to boot it up normally (I had been using a factory cable to get into Fastboot) it got stuck on the Kindle Fire logo screen (the white one not the orange one). I thought maybe it was a problem with the root so I tried to unroot it with another tool and ever since then it briefly shows a red screen at boot and then stays on the Fastboot logo. I've tried holding the power button down for 20 seconds, restoring the firmware to stock (got an error about system.img saying that it wasn't a sparse file), and restoring to an older firmware. None of this has made any difference.
I read somewhere that the red screen is a sign of a missing bootloader but if that's true how do I get back to the stock bootloader? I had 11.3.2.2/7.4.8 installed before all this happened if that helps. I'm willing to try anything at this point. I would like to at least be able to use the Play Store but if I have to stick to stock FireOS I'll just endure it. If you have any questions ask away! Thank you all for your help.

ok first ting i wanna ask is what do you mean 11.3.2/7.4.8, because 11.x.x is for teh 2013 and 7.x.x is for teh 2012 kindle. Also red screen doesnt mean you are missing the bootloader, if you were missing that the device wouldnt even turn on. That error you got when trying to restore the device is probably part of why its not working, probably need to fix that to fix the device, it never reflashed the system partition when it errored and said that the image was not sparse, which is a bit odd in itself considering how the method we use to fix it works.

I have the 2013 version, I just bought it from Amazon two weeks ago and it said the firmware version was 11.3.2.2. I had said 7.4.8 because whenever I searched for a way to root 11.3.2.2 the most recent information I could find talked about 7.4.8 so I thought they were the same thing. So is there a way for me to sparse the system image? Or are there system images out there that are sparsed? If you have a tool that you prefer over others I would love to try it.

Thanks for the link! I actually tried the newest version of his tool and it works up until it says "waiting for boot..." I assume it means it's waiting for a normal boot but since I can't get it to boot past the Fastboot logo (even with a normal cable or no cable at all) it never gets any further. Any suggestions?
Sounds like the bootimg needs to be reflashed. Sometimes a bad bootimg causes it to kick into fastboot upon boot.

[TIP/HOWTO] For those with new Fire not yet powered up and want to install custom ROM

Tip: When you receive your Fire 2015 tablet, don't setup WiFi if you want to install custom ROM (skip WiFi setup)
Why: They are still shipping with FireOS 5.0.1 and it will autoupdate to 5.1.1 as soon as it sees Internet connection (it doesn't ask and takes over tablet)
Why is that bad: Because it's easier to install custom ROM with 5.0 and still a pain/riskier if from 5.1.1 (as of December 2015)
Why is this method easier/safer: No need to root first, no messing with original ROM (can backup first), no need to enable Developer mode, no need to grant ADB permissions
Prerequisites:
- This method will not work if tablet has upgraded to FireOS 5.1.1 or higher, only 5.0.x works
- Need fastboot tools installed on a computer (Windows tools/drivers here if needed) or (Linux/Mac)
- Download TWRP Recovery here to same computer
- Download your new ROM/support files of choice to an external SD Card
- If on Windows, to keep things simple you might place fastboot command, Recovery image in same folder/directory
Install: Fastboot TWRP Recovery from computer, Install Custom ROM from SD Card
- When you receive Fire, don't power it on (or if you do, don't setup WiFi as it will autoupdate to 5.1.1)
- Copy your downloaded ROM image and support files to an SD card, then insert SD into tablet
- Boot tablet directly into fastboot (power button and volume up button)
- USB attach tablet to computer that has fastboot tools and TWRP recovery image
- Unlock and Boot directly into TWRP image from computer terminal or command line
fastboot oem append-cmdline "androidboot.unlocked_kernel=true"
fastboot boot TWRP_Fire_2.8.7.0_adb.img
- Takes seconds to transfer file then recovery should appear
- Optional but recommended: From TWRP, Backup Stock Amazon ROM to external SD card
- Factory Reset from TWRP Recovery
- Install ROM and support files from TWRP via external SD card
- Reboot, profit
Just bought another tablet and this method worked again. Went straight to doing this before even booting.

Yes, am interested if yours came with 5.0 or 5.1.1. If you boot, dont setup Wifi (skip setup) or will autoupdate - it doesn't ask so be careful. Can then check version.

It came with 5.0.1, I'm going to pull out the root script as soon as I turn it on.

You don't need to root it with the above method. Just go straight into fastboot and launch recovery via computer as described, backup stock ROM then install your ROM (then flash or enable root in developer mode within tablet). I trashed a tablet trying to root it with current methods, which is why I came up with this method.

Gotcha. As soon as I opened it, I blocked OTA updates. Rooted/installed SuperSU, and backed up the stock ROM.
I'm currently running CM12.1 and it's working perfectly.
I did not like how it auto signed into my Amazon account once connecting to WiFi (with OTAs blocked)
Many thanks for this. I'm completely new to modding in any way, shape or form, so this is very helpful.
I have seen another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/rom-cm-12-1-2015-11-15-t3249416) which suggests that running CM should be possible now with OS 5.1.1 (my tablet has unfortunately updated since shipping). I have also currently run the script contained within http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/root-playstore-busybox-optimize-flash-t3281804, and was wondering whether it would still be possible to follow the instructions here to install CM, or is it necessary to first restore the Fire tablet back to factory settings (if this is possible)?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Did your tablet come with 5.1.1 out of the box? Or did you just connect to wifi and the updates came through?

I connected to wifi and the updates came through automatically. I hadn't read threads like this one beforehand unfortunately, so I didn't realise that would happen.
Sounds like Amazon is still shipping with 5.0.1 so this method can still apply for those who catch this thread before receiving/booting their tablet. What's nice about this method is you can backup original ROM before modding and don't need to root. Sounds like many have thrashed their tablet trying to root.
Just dont connect to wifi and your fine.
Amazon having a $40 sale, if you ordered one might not setup WiFi when first receiving - re-read first post why.

Just ordered 3 today ... Can't wait to tinker with it.
Thanks for the heads up regarding auto-update!
I've gotten 3 in the last week or so. One came from a small town up north (sorry, shipping details have disappeared from my history) with 5.0.1 and the other two came from Ft. Worth, TX with 5.1.1. I too think everyone should enter recovery immediately when the thing arrives, and then fastboot boot twrp.img to see what happens. I was hoping that if I declined the "Link to my Amazon Account" option, they would pull an older one from stock. Looks like I'm 1 for 3. All 3 have some issues (stuck pixels, backlight bleedthrough) so I'm getting a 4th one from Ft. Worth tomorrow.

Did you try the steps in this thread with the 5.1.1 unit sright out of the box?
Does this still work, or behaved differently with 5.1.1 ?
I'm waiting for my units to make their way to me. Really interested to see what your experience with the 5.1.1 units.
Thnx!

My 4th one came from Ft. Worth. I immediately booted into recovery mode but could not boot TWRP. Obviously this turned out to be a 5.1.1 system. If this had been a 5.0.1 system, the first full boot would have been to CM rather than to stock. So if 5.1.1 is installed at the factory you can't get your TWRP on this way.
Just got mine today it had 5.0.1 creating a backup now
Hi,
where can you download twrp from their page?
I see their list of devices but none of them says fire 5th generation.

THANK YOU!
No you get twrp from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/development/wip-bootable-recovery-kffowi-ford-t3238683

Kindle Fire HD 7" - Reinstall Stock OS - No Root, 2nd Bootloader, Custom Recovery

Kindle Fire HD 7" - Reinstall Stock OS - No Root, 2nd Bootloader, Custom Recovery
OK this is my moms Kindle Fire HD 7" with complete stock Amazon OS installed currently with no root, no custom recovery, no 2nd bootloader or any such customization. Shes been having issues with it for a while now with it randomly shutting off regardless of battery %. It wont happen of course when its plugged in to the charger though. A while back we thought it was the battery dying or faulty somehow so she got a new battery and I installed that. Then she thought it was some game or app installed so she tossed everything to the cloud and tried pulling down one app or game at a time to see if it happened with one particular app. That didnt work either so she tried a return to factory defaults but she said the weirdest thing happened, she tried it multiple times and each time it asked her different parts of the setup. Never did the complete setup from when you first buy it and turn it on. I did at one point try the wipe from recovery mode and then it seemed to ask the complete setup questions. I want to just completely wipe /system and reinstall the OS from scratch, thinking something has been corrupted somehow. Ive tried grabbing the latest update from Amazon and putting in the root and going to Update OS from the settings but it doesnt do anything cause its already at the current version, 7.5.1.
Ive looked around the forums and various other sites found through google and its just been a sea of broken downloads, incomplete directions or just things that involve rooting or adding a 2nd bootloader or custom recovery and I dont want to mess with any of that. I just want to flash on the original OS and have it work right again the way it did when she first got it.
I understand I may have to create a fastboot cable and I am prepared to do so, I have the parts and just gotta do it. I have the Kindle Fire drivers and adb and fastboot set up and working as well on my Windows computer.
