Having looked into ROMs a bit further, I am now targeting getting CM11 installed on my Thea device.
This would not only eliminate the Bluetooth A2DP stuttering, but also remove the infuriating "increasing ringtone volume" setting that is baked into the factory image by Motorola.
Has anyone got CM11 running on their Thea device? I couldn't find an official build on the CyanogenMod web site.
Thea was never released with KitKat as far as I know, so finding a ROM would be unlikely, tbh.
I can't recommend the AOSP build (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2015/development/rom-android-source-project-t3141139) enough, smoother than stock, no launcher redraws and no bluetooth issues for me (I use my bluetooth speaker every day for an hour or two).
The ringtone also doesn't increase, highly recommended with TK stock Gapps, basically turning your Thea into a mini Nexus.

With system storage space being such a concern on the 8GB Thea devices, does the AOSP build's "Move To SD" function work for relocating apps?

Yes AOSP does let you move apps, in fact I think it lets you move more of them. But as TK Gapps installs all the stock Google apps to the /system partition, I've ended up with a bit more free space on my device. Obv YMMV, but give it a go.

My initial impression is good. I have not encountered the extreme Bluetooth A2DP skipping that I experienced with the factory 5.0.2 LL image. It is unpredictable, and can take some time to manifest though, so if it does occur I'll report back here.
I wouldn't expect to get OTA updates for a custom ROM, so I assume that I will need to use TWRP to install any subsequent Android versions?
If I do this, will I lose all of my installed apps and data, as with the initial AOSP load?
Also, will I need to side load the TK stock Gapps to keep them up to date?

No, you won't get OTAs. You will flash updates to your phone the same way you just did, via TWRP. keep an eye on the thread for update notifications and changelogs from the devs. Don't flash different ROMs over each other without a factory reset, or a "full wipe".
When updating a ROM you will only flash the update and NOT need to factory reset, that way you retain your data. Clearing the cache partition can help with initial crashes or problems you incur afterwards.
Yes, you can load the gapps and keep them up to date if you wish, TK's generally see updates on weekends. This is however optional and totally dependent on you bandwidth availability etc.
I generally just download and reflash one gapps package. Until there is a big change in the Gapps, then I'll update mine. Check the relevant thread for more flashing instructions.
Hope it helps. Also, backups in TWRP are a good thing to have.

Maybe useful to note here, that I got my moto g 2nd gen xt1072 with kitkat loaded on it.

There is NO stock KitKat ROM for thea (XT1072,XT1077,XT1078,XT1079).
Lollipop update was a huge one with deep changes and I don't recommend downgrading a device to an earlier version that the one it was sold with.
On other devices, the bootloader is not compatible and downgrading can brick the device.
According to these reports, it seems KitKat custom roms can be installed but it is not recommended !
As Thea doesn't have any kitkat rom, I suppose you took it from titan ? (Titan = no-4G variant)
Don't forget that Thea (XT107x) is a DIFFERENT device than Titan (XT106x,I think).
It doesn't only add 4g, it has a different Soc (different processor...), a different battery. So Titan ROMs are not compatible with Thea. End of the line.
Some may work, but are not made for it.
Flashing a titan ROM on thea is just like flashing a galaxy S6 ROM onto a Sony xperia Z3. They are different devices.

Yes you can. But prefer roms like Cyanogenmod it's clean you install gapps (any version you want).
It's far better than stock ones

This link a picture of the moto g 2nd gen without LTE
The variant without LTE can be downgraded to KitKat because it was released with KitKat.
The variant with LTE was released with lollipop and CAN'T be downgraded to KitKat.

Not possible. Although Titan and Thea share the same board, bootloader restrictions and source tree changes will not allow you to boot CM11 or any KitKat code, let alone a full ROM. Try CyanogenMod 12.1 or 13 instead, although you have to unlock your bootloader and install TWRP. It has many improvements over stock Android without losing stability and even gaining some speed. Also most CM kernels for Titan will work in Thea as well. I am currently running CM12.1 snapshot and it's butter smooth with zero bugs.

They are variants of the same motherboard AFAIK, same camera, same CPU and GPU and resolution, same SD unit, but on the bootloader and RIL level they are fully different. Some kernels can be cross-flashed, and even some Titan recoveries boot on Thea (although a very bad idea with zero good results) ROMs must be adapted to the full board and cannot be cross-flashed.
Hi All, I've previously unlocked bootloader, flashed stock kitkat & rooted my XT1068 (Moto G 2014).
I'm really loving this while 5.0.2 was really lagging & was consuming lots of battery, it's good on kitkat.
But would love to try out any rom if you could suggest me some that could be less battery consumers than the official android releases, may be based on either 4.4.4 or 5.1.1 Have seen lots of rom threads over here but am unable to get the idea regarding battery life
Cm is good in perfrmnce and features and almost stable but battery life will be ok not that great

My moto G 2014 lags quite a bit and the battery backup is horrible .. I'm on stock currently.
I'm new to rooting and stuff, so need suggestion as to which is the best (not fast, but just no lags .. battery is very imp) .. I'm not a gamer or anything, just normal whatsapp and photos, thats all.

Stock based : Radium Redefined v1.2
Cm 12.1 : Fusion LP or Orion
Cm 13 : Vatsals Optimised Cm 13 Builds
AOSP 5.1.1 : Minimal Os
AOSP 6.0 : haven't tried any type yet.
I've used all with just Whatsapp, Uc Browser, 2 games and a couple of music apps.
All the above give me more than 5 hrs of SoT with little gaming that is.
For me cm13 official
I try :
Cm 12.1 : works well but some bug time to time
Cm 13 : I love marshmallow but big big problem with sim network provider, always lost connection and poor battery
SlimSaber 5.1.1 : the best for me.
I really waiting good connection and battery life with marshmallow.....
I use stock kitkat 4.4.4, rooted+xposed for some modules(greenify, amplify...), unistalled some system apps that I dont use. I downgraded from Minimal OS because of battery backup and reliability. Now I am getting AT LEAST five hours SOT with heavy usage, a lot of youtube, whatsapp and FB. No force closes unless you unistal something you need for the phone to work properly but you can fix it with a Nandroidbackup.
However, if you mind having the look of lollipop I definitely recommend Minimal OS as it is VERY VERY STABLE, it has the best battery backup on any lollipop rom I tried (at least 7 roms), I think i faced 3 reboots in 2 months since it was my daily driver other than that, rock solid.

The following roms are the most stable roms i have ever used on my moto.
1. Blisspop. (with maximum customisation) BlissPop-v4.0.3-titan-OFFICIAL-20151031-1345
2.Cyanogenmod 12.1 (Minimum customisation) cm-12.1-20151117-SNAPSHOT-YOG7DAO1K5-titan

I'm using minimal OS and i have any single lag (on other rom's there are many as you said) also battery backup is very good. You have to try it!
THIS is what I'm using...
I've been using Nexus Experience 10.1 with Extended Kernel and am extremely happy with it. No bugs, very smooth, excellent battery life, and pulled a 29203 on AnTuTu Benchmark(Would post a screen shot but am not allowed).

I would suggest you Minimal OS 5.1.1 . It's very stable, no bugs what so ever. Integrated kernel is very battery friendly but you can have any kernel you want really (Halogen R14 is my choice) . RAM management is on top of what the device is capable of and it got everything you need in terms of customizing your device while keeping it clean and not overloaded like CyanogenMod.
Not that there is any "best rom" but here is my opinion:
6.0.1 -> Broken OS by ishubhamsingh
5.1.1 -> (1).SlimSaber by aayushya, (2).Minimal OS by vatsal
Stock -> definitely 6.0 over 5.0.1
I recommend SlimSaber as I am a huge fan of Slim, the roms are always very fast and light, which means good battery. If you want a pure AOSP experience, go for Minimal OS
As far as kernel goes, Decipher kernel is really great. The kernel that comes with broken os is also very good. Rest kernels have too many features which may end up slowing it down

I use stock kitkat fully debloated with a custom kernel because the amout of bugs and the poor battery life of >5.0 drives me crazy.
Cyanogenmod 13 is still only nightly status, I update regularly but I still have random problems/unreliability with it. My preference would be a solid AOSP style ROM, even if it were Lollipop.

I have found a fast rom for the 2012 N7, I went through CM12.1, Omnirom 5.1.1 and 4.4.4, Lineage 14.1, RR 5.8.2, but none of these were good, with or without custom kernals or parrot mod. The best rom I've ran (and am currently running) is stock 4.1.2 with no mods (unless you count root). Happy flashing guys, and frankly, if you don't want to update your hardware, just downgrade your software. I also tried stock 4.3, 4.4.4, and 5.1.1, 4.1.2 is the best by far. It took an hour to settle but when it did, it was lightning compared to the others.
Also no, I tried CM 10, it's somehow slower than stock 4.1.2

Before buying my 2012 N7 3G (I bought it some months ago) I've read the same on some forum. I use this rom base on 7.1.2 and it is acceptable for me.
I believe some apps/versions are not compatible with 4.1.2 by now, so it may require a bit of digging for apks no?
What I do notice, is that if you want a fast tablet you have to carefully choose your apps (and maybe versions) due to ram consumption. From example as an app for e-reader: Kindle (127mb ram) vs fbreader (27mb ram).
Since you had all the work trying roms I guess you may have choosing apps. Do you have any recommendation?

nova launcher
opera beta (may not be the lightest, but it has facebook notifications and messenger notifications so minus two apps I need)
