T Mobile phone to Cricket - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I purchased a T-mobile Note 4 and connected it to Cricket. I have no issues using the phone but I have a pop up for Tmobile software update that keeps popping up. The update will not download, I assume because Im not on Tmobiles network. I would love to find a way to remove all Tmobile settings and have Cricket updates come to my phone. Is this even possible?

Cricket can't give you updates for a phone it didn't sell. You can use Odin to update your device if you want to. If you're willing to root your device, then you can get rid of the nagging.

I have a tmobile note 4 on Cricket too. I was able to download the 5.1.1 ota update without issue.

It's pretty hard to brick (as in I haven't heard of anyone not being able to recover) because you can just use Odin to go back to stock. Just use Odin to root/add TWRP. I think if you're on 5.1.1 you have to also use a different kernel. Instructions should be with the root thread. Just follow the directions and you will be fine.

There is a system-less root method available that does not require a custom kernel. Don't know why you keep getting the update message, as 5.1.1 is the current version. Root is very easy on this phone, plus you can enable tethering on Cricket. As said above, it is almost impossible(almost) to actually brick this phone.

[Q] Help with unroot and removing "Custom" and unlocked padlock

I purchased the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 3 a little less than a week ago and, to be honest, I'm not really keen on it. There are a number of reasons, but what it boils down to is that I just don't think I like it all that much. I've already sold my Galaxy Note 2, so I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do about a cell phone, but that's something beyond the scope of this particular posting. What I need help with is how to unroot this device. I used the Root De La Vega procedure very shortly after it came out and it worked like a charm. I noted that when the phone boots up, there is the word "Custom" and an unlocked padlock. How do I get this AT&T model of the Galaxy Note 3 back to the condition, more or less, of when I bought it about a week ago so that I won't have any issues getting the refund processed? I've heard some people requesting help with unrooting and they've been told to use the unroot in SuperUser. Will this get rid of the "Custom" wording on boot-up AND the unlocked padlock? If not, is there a way to get this back to the way it was or am I just out of luck since I only have about another week to return this device. Obviously, if I'm stuck, I'm stuck and I'll find a way to live with it. Who knows...I might actually get to liking it down the road when some of the quirks have been worked out. However, if there's a way to sort all of this out in a timely manner where there's no muss or fuss, that would be the ideal solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not super familiar with the unrooting process, but try to unroot using SuperSU and reboot a couple of times to see if it goes away. If that doesn't work then flash the original firmware with odin and that should do it. Pretty easy to do from what I understand.

Perhaps this is showing my ignorance, but since the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 has a locked bootloader (which, as of yet, has not been unlocked), would that prevent Odin from flashing a new image? If I don't need an unlocked bootloader to flash with Odin, do you know where I might find the original image that came with my phone from AT&T in a format that Odin can flash? I haven't tried the SuperSU yet since I want all my options readily available so that if one fails, I can move on to the next one.

To my understanding you can flash anything with Odin on a locked bootloader phone that is "signed". If you give me a few minutes I'll help you look for the original odin file to flash.

I really appreciate your help. Every time I've used Odin in the past has involved a phone with a non-locked bootloader (as far as I know) so this is new territory for me.

I tried the SuperSU full unroot method - didn't remove the padlock, flashed the one click - didn't remove it, and just flashed the second (for funsies) and that didn't help (probably shouldn't have expected it to).
I'm returning my note and can't get rid of the lock. Will PM Designgears I guess
Did you restart it a few times? Also a factory reset?

yes to both (restarted 5 times). since i was already so far into the root process, I added the files to the sdcards that are in the root steps, and the lock went away. Then I finished rooting.
went back and did one click again and still had the lock after rebooting 5 times. Thought about how it went away after adding the files so I skipped through the phone setup, enabled USB debugging again and added a dummy file to the sd card (a .csv I had on my desktop) and then removed it. Rebooted, and the lock was gone.
I'd use the padlock hack in Wanum and hide the root apps via Nova Launcher just to stick it to ATT and return it rooted.

Ok well here's what I did and the padlock is gone.
Factory reset on the phone
Phone rebooted and I removed the super su app using the setting in the su app.
Then flashed the one click 9 tar
phone reboots on its own after flashing, icon was still there
rebooted the phone twice and the padlock was gone
Not sure if I just got lucky or what lol

Nothing about this update has me even thinking about switching back to stock for this. But thanks for the heads up.
Anyone have a copy of the stock recovery? Don't want to flash all the way back to stock but would like to take the update. Currently running tarp.

I know this breaks root, but is it possible to root again or do we have to find a new way to root. I only want to root for tethering and debloat. Verizon sucks when they load everything they can on top of a phone that has a lot of apps already installed on it.
Best to get a copy of it to the devs. If it works like the razr, you can d/l but not install it and pull the file from cache.

Use Titanium backup, and freeze Software Update MUC.
This should prevent you from getting the update.

especially not, since you can get the benefits of the new radios, without accepting the whole update.
Will this for sure break root and would something like root keeper help at all?
I'm finally eligible for a contract upgrade device. If I were to buy a G2 today from Verizon, what are the odds it come with this update out of the box? I'd hate to buy a device I can't root and install custom ROMs on...

Just flash the radio.. Its the only thing thats worth anything out of this update

That was my feeling as well. I thought I would wait until the S5 or HTC One 2 came out to upgrade, but based on the previous versions rooting/unlocked bootloader on VZW are highly unlikely.

Borrow a friend's pc or go to a library and use Samsung Kies, but you will lose root.
This is most likely because you deleted some the system apps that came with the stock rom..... This is why I never delete them only freeze with titanium backup! This happen to me on Ml9 so I had to restore stock rom reroot put super su in survival mode and then take the update!

Kies is just going to tell you that your firmware is up to date. Either factory reset or you may have to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715 < This is how I had to do it.
So if I am rooted and deleted the AT&T bloat apps, I can't install the KitKit update? What I unroot completely? I know that won't bring back the garbage AT&T apps back, but would I be able to OTA to kitkat then?

You will not be able to ota unless you do a full restore. You also must have att sim card. At&t is just dirty like that.

Wow. Anyway, I was rooted, but had Wanam installed and successfully updated to Nb4. I had the fake system status set to official. I was alwasy under the impression if it said Official you could update.
And great, because now we all have to follow a really complicated guide to restore back to MJ5 if we want kitkat.
I was rooted on mj5 no wanam or anything and my phone update to nb4
It didn't even ask.
What you probably did was delete the att update software so now it's not even looking.

I don't think being rooted affects your updating. I have read many people accidentally updating and loosing their root. If you couldn't update with root, people wouldn't freeze at&t update.
ive tried unrooting factory reset andthe only thing i can think of is that ive deleted something . i guess the lesson learned is juat freeze apps instead of deleting them

Best Buy restore

Ive seen many people mention that I can get my Note 3 updated to KK at Best Buy, but I had some questions. Did I have to purchase at BB in order to do this? (I bought directly from ATT). Also, is there any disadvantage to doing this, other than I assume it will wipe all the data on the phone? Seems it might be easier than going through all the hoops to get to KK. Wanted to check before doing anything though.
Thanks!
What hoops are you referring to that you can't update to kit kat?

Cool. I have an n900t, so I was curious about what he was truly asking. So you guys can't just Odin a stock .tar image?
So heimdall also can't just flash all these for you bypassing the Odin/heimdall mix? I don't have an n900a to play with, so I can't test myself.
Only asking as it seems heimdall should be able to restore you to factory without having to flash single files through odin, and then use heimdall later.
If this is the only way to update good luck. But seriously, doing it once, you become a pro. I've had to restore my phone several times in the middle of the night trying several methods to recover my data. To me it is fun, but I do understand as well.

Yes. I vowed to straight up pay full price for phones now just so I don't have to jump through hoops in order to root, restore, etc... It will be expensive, but I figure $800 every two years or so can't hurt too much. I'm not rich by any means, but really tired of not "owning" my device. I save $40 a month into my phone plan, then cash it out when I find something I like.

Thanks. I guess the second part is whether the restore they do will have any long term negative effects? I mean I just want to get on KitKat stock and then I can come home and apply towel root and call it a day. Should this be an issue? If there is anything not the same so to speak I would invest the time to do it manually. Thanks
I ended up going to BB today. Unfortunately they couldnt flash it. They said that the system showed it wouldnt work. Although I didnt tell them this, I did have it rooted at one point but I removed the root before brining it. Its on NB4. Although it does still show the lock during start up but is definitely not rooted. Any idea what I have to do to allow their system to work, or should I just bite the bullet and do it myself via this link?

Ended up just using that link and ran through those steps. Everything seems to be fine now, and at KK finally

Help needed..

OP update: fixed! Thanks! Fix was posted
My brother has a S5 g900a.. he's stuck on 4.4.2, ND3.. won't allow the OTA which is only the small 170mb (which from what I read was a ssmall bug fix blah blah blah.. well 4.4.4 is out OA1, well he can't update to it cuz the only OTA available is the small 170mb update which downloads fine but fails the install.. no 170 update means no 4.4.4 update.. can he Odin back to NCE to fix the OTA issues?? Anyone had luck with this? We even tried to use the stock recovery - update.zip from ext SD OA1 and when he did and it rebooted it still showed 4.4.2 as his FW.. I've read and read and all I see are people having issues but no good answer.. thanks guys (BTW I'm not accustomed to ATT nor the S5. I'm TMo Note 2 (and other phones) awaiting my Note 4 arrival tomorrow)

He's factory reset it a few times already. I just instructed him to download NCE and flash via Odin. He did and is on NCE now, he checked for updates and of course there is a update.. he's updating now, I'm sure he'll have to go update to update til he gets back to where he was on 4.4.2 and then we'll see if the update he was originally trying but kept failing actually goes thru this time.. he's gonna text/call be soon with the results. I'll update with his progress soon.

He ODIN'd back to NCE and OTAs still fail. So he's on a older version that he even started with the OTA issues.. don't make no sense. Told him to take it to Best Buy with a Samsung Experience team and have them flash the latest 4.4.4 .. what a bunch of BS. Glad I'm on TMo and my Note 4 arrives tomorrow. From the sounds of all the problems my Note 2 is better than a AT&T S5. Locked Bootloaders too? They screwed y'all.

OK.. what I gathered was:
Downgrade to NCE (using the downgrade_to_nce file) via odin
Then just sideload the nce_to_ng3, then the ng3_to_oa1 via stock recovery ..
That should bring him to the latest stock unrooted OA1? Or will he have to go back and flash the kernels as well ? I got him doing the downgrade and side loading the other 2 otas right now. So I guess we'll find out soon enough.. what a bunch of BS you gotta go through on the S5 AND its a locked bootloader?? SO glad I got a N4 instead of a S5 lol

I think that you are over complicating the process of upgrading to 4.4.4 . Mine originally failed trying to pull the OTA from AT&T. However my phone was extremely de-bloated stock rom(NG3). Muniz's safestrap upgrade to 4.4.4 worked flawless for me. As long as you are confident using safestrap I recommend that, and plus it will be rooted when you are done.

We got it working.. Went to the Troubleshooting portion of the OP in the How-To-Root.. basically my brother couldn't do OTA update.. from ND3 forward.. So we downgraded to NCE per the file suggested, then we manually sideloaded the other 2 OTA files.. Thanks y'all. Sorry I wasn't comprehending it. I DO read and search just sometimes don't get my head wrapped around it. Thanks!
BTW: we are stock unrooted and wanted to keep it that way

Glad you got it fixed, but you know you will go back to root LOL...I use to tell myself that I would never root bootloader phones unless there is a current firmware available to restore with ODIN in case I **** up. However I stopped caring when all the roots out don't trip KNOX and if it comes down to it I can just have a AT&T store reload my firmware after playing stupid..did that once lol..

LOL. I never leave phones stock.. this was my brothers phone, he was on ND3 and couldn't receive OTA updates, was essentially stuck on 4.4.2 and upset cuz 4.4.4 is out already and awaiting 5.0 hopefully. So he was a bit ticked off lol. I'm still on my TMo Note 2 running Lollipop, my Note 4 will be here tomorrow.. me and my bro have our own houses and weren't near each other, and he never rooted or flashed before so it was a figuring it out, communicating to someone.who doesn't flash issue
