USB-C Charger replacement options? - Nexus 5X Accessories

I bought a Nexus 5x from the USA, but I live in the UK. I will therefore need to replace the wall charger when it arrives.
For my old Nexus 5 I use an iPad charger. This is fast, and adaptable, since I travel a lot, I can switch the figure of 8 input on the iPad charger to whatever country I am in, and it allows me to carry only one charger and switch between Nexus and iPad charging.
I realise that the old iPad charger will be quite slow to charge my new nexus 5x. I would like a replacement that is at least as dependable as my iPad charger, but with the usb-c standard. The perfect charger would have swappable plugs, like the iPad, with a usb-c AND standard usb 2/3 ports.
Any ideas?

Nobody found an alternative to this yet? Is it at least possible to buy a standard, genuine, nexus 5x charger with a uk plug?

Can't you just use an outlet adapter?

I now have my US plug and a clumsy US->UK adapter. Not the perfect solution:

I assume that a host of USB-C plugs will come out in the next few months. I am still craving that Apple charger functionality.

I ordered Googles charger, its compact and has a long/slim cable. Recommended!
I have the eu-plug but it should be available in UK model...

I only bought and adapter
Well, I had a Moto X 2014 with quick charger and I lost it, so my replacement was the 5X. In order to keep my previous chargers I bought a micro usb -> Usb C adapter. It's works pretty well for both charging and data transfer and isn't that expensive and you can still use your previous charger.

Remember that the OEM charger has an output of 3.0A so you might use a big charger, like the one of an IPAD or S6.

From what I understand though, the old USB formats are not capable of delivering 3.0A. It has to be USB-C. Adapters will turn your charge to 2.5A maximum.
I might be wrong, but have read a few things that suggest this. With my official Google charger I can charge my Nexus 5x fully in about 30 minutes.

I'm in the same/similar boat as I've got a nexus 5x with the wrong country's charger-type - With the little adapter-things that just change the plug on the older micro-USB cables, is there a danger of cheap ones such as this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Mi...333069?hash=item2ca48e09cd:g:LDgAAOSwFGNWSUtf damaging the charger into which it is plugged, or worse yet the actual phone? What would be the cheapest *safe* cable which would charge the nexus 5x off any standard USB A port (ie. older chargers or a computer) (even at slower speed) as I have a lot of older chargers around and like to keep them at a few places so getting one cable is the best way to do this.

I already own an Anker multi port charger, and have just bought the new one which has 1 USB C port and 4 standard USB ports with a total out put of 40W. The USB C port is rated at 3A and charges my 5x quickly. The other ports are 2.4A maximum and I have had no problems charging several devices simultaneously, Its a little smaller than a cigarette packet and has the figure 8 socket for change of power lead when travelling.
Thoroughly recommended

Portable chargers/battery packs for Nexus 7

Edit: I've edited in a summary of working/non-working chargers on the bottom of this post:
I've read a lot of threads about various chargers not working with the Nexus 7 but not a particularly comprehensive list of those that do, so I figured I'd ask this question:
I'm looking to buy a portable charger/battery pack in the near future. I'm also soon to own a Nexus 7 (I'm in the second wave of Play Store pre-orders, so should be some time this week, so I'd like to find a charger that's compatible with it. I've done a fair amount of Googling (and a decent amount of browsing Newegg...), but the Nexus 7 is too new to be explicitly listed as compatible with most chargers.
Ideally:
- Capable of charging 2+ devices simultaneously. (Though the additional power draw of tablets means many devices can't charge two devices if one of them is a tablet -- that's an acceptable limitation for me).
- Capable of charging at the same time as being charged. (I'd like to use it as a regular wall charger when not traveling.)
- Bonus points if the charger can itself be charged via USB, which then makes it work with existing infrastructure (can charge it off of a laptop, existing car charger, etc.)
Has anybody had luck finding something that works? Considering some of the reports were of iPad chargers not being able to charge the Nexus 7, I'd rather not just assume something works and play the "buy and return until I find something that works" game.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: Summary of working/non-working charges through post #23:
"charger cable" means the cable that came with the charger in question. "Stock cable" means the the cable that came with the Nexus 7. "low power" means not on a high-power charging port (i.e. one meant for charging tablets), likely only when the screen is off.
WORKING (YMMV):
Note: Model names/etc below are only as specific as the original post. Links are to the poster who claimed the charger was working or not working. You're encouraged to visit any linked sites/view any posted pictures to ensure the charger being referenced by a poster is the same one you're looking at.
Anker 8000mAh (with charger cable, 2A)
iGo Green 6630079-1400RAV (tested with Samsung Vibrant charger cable, may work with others)
New Trent 5000mAh (conflicting reports, see below)
NewTrent iCarrier 12000mAh (44.4Wh) IMP120D (use included "Galaxy Tab" cable/adapter on 2A port)
New Trent IMP100P (charger cable only)
New Trent IMP1000 (charger cable only)
NewTrent IMP99D (charger cable only)
Poporta Usb Turbo Charger 5000 (charger cable only)
RAVPower Dynamo-On-the-Go RP-BP03 5200mAh Power Bank (charger cable only, only with screen off)
TomTom Universal High-Speed Multi-Charger (low power only)
Yoobao 11200mAh (with charger cable)
NOT WORKING:
There's been a lot of evidence that suggests that charger compatibility may be more a case of what cable you use moreso than which charger you use, and that any true 2A charger will work with the correct cable. That said, these have been explicitly listed as not working by some posters. Again, YMMV.

I have the New Trent 9900 and XPAL 8000 and both do not work. The 9900 actually has a port for 2A output and that also doesn't seem to charge the Nexus.

I have a new trent 10000mAh one, but haven't tried charging with it yet. I'll try it out with both oem and new trent's cord to see if it works. The new trent also has two ports to charge from and is supposed to work with ipads and such. But I'll report back tomorrow.
I'm looking for one that doesn't have to be plugged in to charge the Nexus... so I could charge it while using it in bed or something. Have a couple USB chargers that I use with my PS Vita and iPhone 4S that I'm going to assume won't charge the Nexus 7. I hate the idea of being tied to a wall plug.

Just tried it and that is a resounding NO lol. Don't know why :silly:
Only the supplied cord with the New Trent IMP100P works. Now that's dumb.
Just tried my IMP1000 with the retractable cord w/ interchangeable tips I had in the bag with it (not sure if the battery pack came with that cord) and it worked, went from "Discharging" to "Charging (AC)" and the charging symbol came on instead of going to "Not Charging" like it did with the OEM cable. Who would thing a cheap retractable cable would be the difference.

If so, how? Mine doesn't work.
NewTrent iCarrier 12000mAh (44.4Wh) IMP120D works if you use the included 'Galaxy Tab' cable/adapter and on the 2A Port (Port 2).
I tried a 'generic' microUSB data cable and the included cable with the Nexus 7. Plugged directly in, the status goes from 'Discharging' to 'Not Charging'. Once I used the 'Galaxy Tab' cable/adapter with either the generic cable or the Nexus 7 USB cable, it went straight to 'Charging (AC)'.
Cheers,
Kermee

I have NewTrent IMP99D and it has the following:
- 2 USB ports: one if 2 AMP
- Comes with a retractable USB cable
Here's the intersting thins: if I plug the Nexus 7 own cable to the IMP99D, it does NOT charge the N7. BUT... if I use the USB cable that came from IMP99D, it DOES charge the N7. Similar situation on my old Galaxy Tab 7 Plus.
Link
Really is weird... None of these chargers worked with any cord I tried with them. Nexus 7, the cords that came with the chargers, my phone cord, none of them except one...
The cord that came with the New Trent on the far left that I got when I bought the original Sprint Evo 4g wimax. Now with that cord they all work. And that's an old New Trent not the one with the dual usb ports.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Definitely has to do with the way the cables transmit power. I have 1 cable that will work with every charger I have including the New Trent IMP1000 where none of the others, including the OEM cable, will show as "Charging (AC)". No idea where I got the cable or I'd pick up a couple extras. It's a retractable cable with interchangeable micro/mini tips and the cable has a round plug that plugs into the tips.

Another Newtrent 9900 post. It works, as the others have pointed out, with just the included USB cables and no others. I don't know if this is just unique to the N7, but to activate charging mode you have to hold the power down for a few seconds, other wise you just get a read out of how charged up it is. I guess maybe its made to work this way, but no instructions were included with mine so it confused me for a minute.
Anker 8000mAh works at 2A with the Anker cable, no go with a straight usb.

Car charger (Fast)

Hi all,
Can anyone point me to a known car charger which fast charges the G2? (Preferably not a $30 charger)
All but one of my previous car chargers only slow charge. I also just bought 2 from Amazon which claim to be 2 amp, but they also slow charge (just packed them up to go back).
Thanks.

It's my understanding that you can make one by shorting the data pins in a USB cable, but just remember to never, ever use that USB cable on a PC or else you'll damage the port.
I, too, am frustrated by LG's attempt to thwart fast-charge via normal USB cables. Once we have custom kernels, this will likely be resolved. I used leankernel on my GNex and had a fast-charge widget that would let me go from 0 to 100% in about 45 minutes.

This makes some sense as my previous phone was a GNex running CyanogenMod with Franco Kernel. 3/4 of my previously working "fast" chargers only slow charge my G2.
Strangely, when using LG's USB cable plugged into my laptop's USB allows fast charging.
I use a Palm car charger, it's the best one I've ever found, and they can usually be found for around $10. It will fast charge the G2, tested and confirmed.
Okay, I take it back, it doesn't stay on fast charging. After a minute, the slow charge notification pops up. But this is the fastest car charger that I've ever found, and I looked around for a while.
The G2 is capable of an even faster fast charge than what we are used to, and that's why other home chargers also show slow charge. It's not really slow, just not as fast as it could be.

Yes, you are correct. But it seems that they are going "the extra mile" to make it more difficult...
For example, when I use my GNex USB adapter, it says "slow charge"... When I use an Apple wall charger, "slow charge". Unless I use LG's cable. I can't get fast charge to work with anything at all unless I am using LG's cable. Even then, it may or may not work with the non-LG adapter.
Can't wait for a kernel that has fast charge enabled. With the wireless storage feature of this phone, there's no reason to use MTP anymore, IMO.
So is it the cable or the 1.8a "base" that enables us to fast charge?

I'm 90% sure this has to do with the cable. Most premium USB cables are 24awg/28awg (power/data). The LG OEM cable is 20awg/28awg, and I'm guessing the phone detects the voltage drop in order to determine slow vs fast charge. FWIW, going from 20awg to 24awg yields an increase in resistance of 2.5x. I may be off base on this being the underlying cause, but I cannot think of any reason why I can fast charge on my 2.1A car charger only with the OEM cable, just like with the OEM wall charger. I'm going to hunt for a 20/28 USB cable to test this theory. In another thread, I said I was able to fast charge with regular USB cables on my car charger but I couldn't replicate it today. Phone would slow charge in all instances of USB cables, modified or not, on my 2.1A car charger.
yes, the cable is a difference.

I just bought this one below...
Here's a dual port Turbo car charger. Will work on non-turbo charge devices too. Won't burn them out. Downgrades automatically. They all do.
Extsud® Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 USB Intelligent Car Charger With Two USB Turbo Ports (36W)
$15.99
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XJ7OTS0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
This charger seems to be sold under different brand names, like Extsud, Ivoler. Seems to be the same device, so this is the least expensive price I found. Here's the Ivoler below, a few dollars more, but seems to be the same thing -- except it comes with a USB cable. I have plenty of those already!
iVoler Adaptive Fast Qualcomm Dual Port Car Charger (with cable)
$18.97
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-iVole...ords=Qualcomm®+Quick+Charge+2.0+car+dual+port
Be careful! Some "dual port" car chargers have only ONE Turbo (Qualcomm 2.0) port, and the other is a regular port. Why? 2.0 technology is backwards compatible, will not hurt non-2.0 devices. So, silly for a dual port car charger being advertised as "2.0" to have only one actual 2.0 port in many cases. Read the descriptions carefully!
Both these (same device under two different brand names) does have TWO Turbo (Qualcomm 2.0) ports!
Motorola TurboPower Car Charger
I prefer the slim profile car chargers. Motorola just released one for $30...charger and cable...
I'd post links and photo but forum rules require >10 posts.
Someone tested this?

I ended up with Auky Quick Charge 2.0 30W 2 Ports USB Car Charger Adapter and highly recommend it. Pretty low profile, two charging ports (one which is quick charge), reputable and relatively cheap ($17 currently).

I guess I don't understand why you bought a dual port charger inferior to the one below and more expensive.
I specifically hate the dual port chargers that only come with one Quick Charge port. That makes NO sense. Both ports should be Quick Charge or nothing.
The one below has TWO Quick Charge ports, so no need to much around trying to figure out which is which. And the ports safely downgrade if it's not a Quick Charge device. You can charge a simple flip phone if you want.
And it costs less money.
Soon, all devices will be Quick Charge so you will need both to be Quick Charge anyway... When my wife rides in the car we both charge our Quark phones.
But again, if you plug a non-Quick Charge device into a Quick Charge port, it still charges just fine. So, no need to EVER buy a non-Quick Charge charger again.

Damn. I wish I would have seen this before I bought the other one. Oh well. I bought a Qi charging car dock anyway, so I can have that plugged into the regular port and plug the phone into the quick charge port if needed.

Nexus 5X car charger

Nexus 5X just announce yesterday, google said it support fast charge, 5V @3a, TOTAL 15W, but never mentioned if it support qualcomm quick charge 2.0 . Since the Nexus 5X use snapdragon 808, it suppose to support quick charge 2.0?
But anyway, since the nexus 5x use the type c port, the regular car charger won't work it, at least you need to prepare another type c cable or adapter. but today i will recommend a tronsmart type c car charger:
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Tronsmart-Qualcomm-Certified-Technology-USB/dp/B0146FK3G0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1443600918&sr=8-5&keywords=type+c+car+charger
With this car charger, you just need to plug and charge your nexus 5x directly, and it also offer another port which support quick charge 2.0. So if your family have the old nexus 6 or samsung s6 etc, they also can get quick charge.
Let me know your thought about this little cool car charger?
The problem with that charger is it doesn't charge at 5V/3A like the charger that comes with the phone (USB Type-C 15W (5V/3A) charger). The Nexus 5X and 6P do not support Qualcomm Quick Charge technology, so the Tronsmart charger will charge it, but not at full speed.
We need a car charger that does 5V/3A and uses USB-C. The only one I've run across so far is this one: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B014F2NQ36
I assume there will be many more options in the coming weeks.

Is that a reputable brand? All my aftermarket chargers have pretty much been either Anker or Aukey and I've had great success with them.

That's good to hear, I hope to see some Type-C 5V/3A chargers soon because I need/want tk change over most of my chargers from QC2.0 to the USB Type-C standard. I believe they would need to be Type-C to Type-C and not type a to Type-C in order to support the 3A at 5V which would make it even easier in the long run

So do you have an answer as to whether or not a type-a to type-c can support the 3A? I just received my "Google USB Type-c to USB A Plug Cable" and am curious. thanks!
Tronsmart said:
Hey there, the correct terminology of the" type-a to type-c" should be " USB A to USB Type-c". So "Google USB Type-c to USB A Plug Cable" is as same as "USB A to USB Type-c Cable" Only different expression

I am just writing exactly what appears on the packaging from Google...
I don't believe you answered my question...can that type of cable somehow charge at 3A? Thanks!
Tronsmart said:
Sorry for my misunderstand. Only type-c cable can charge at 3A. You can pay attention to the their ports to recognize them.

Saw that too during my search for a car charger and battery bank that supports 5V/3A fast charging. It doesn't but still interesting.

Has there been confirmation whether the Vinsic that everyone rushed to buy doesn't also split the 3A between its USB A and USB Type-c?

I wanted to get a 2nd one as a spare but since you aren't making one I bought the Google one ($43 later...) I would have preferred a Tronsmart one. I would have bought 2-3 if they were 15-20$

Choetech C to C 3A/5V wall charger

I received this from Choetech a few weeks ago at a discount for an honest review. We have both a 5X and 6P in the house, so having an extra charger for work was a must but there weren't really any options other than the Google Store. I like this one better because the cable is not fixed, so I can use any cable I want with it. Paired with the Choetech 1m C to C cable this thing performs just as fast as the stock 5X and 6P chargers, topping out at around 2700-2800mAh on Ampere when my battery is around 10-15%. Build quality is excellent and I like that it has the plug on the end of the charger like the stock Huawei charger, not the side like the LG charger. THe cable itself (sold separately) is well built also; some of the other third party ones I've tried are too thick but this one is just the right balance of thick without being overkill. Another big bonus with the cable is that they come in 0.5m/1m/2m/3m lengths so there is something for everyone. I've purchased Choetech products before for my Nexus 5 and 6 and have been very happy. Overall this is a solid combo and I will likely be ordering another one or two so we have some extras around the house/work!

Glad to know it works well for you. I've had bad experience with the longevity of the two Choetech products I bought in the past, neither work anymore so I probably wouldn't buy from them again.
Too bad they dont make a EU version of the wall plug
Bought the following:
USB C to USB C
USB A to USB C
USB C charger
I have tested the USB A to USB C with CheckR/Nexus 6P and it passed. I rarely transfer any data using USB these days, so I am only look for charging. These are great accessories for these prices.
I also have this charger and cable from Choetech. My only (minor) gripe is that this combo takes an hour longer than the factory charger to fully charge my dead phone. I only plan on using this as a spare, so no big deal. The build quality appears to be very good, so we'll see how it holds up over time.
I also have the Choetech type A to C cable, which also works very well. I was initially concerned about Benson Leung's review of this cable and how it did not meet Type C spec. After reaching out to Choetech customer support, they quickly responded and sent me a revised cable this is within spec. I tested the cable with CheckR, and it did pass the test. Choetech's customer service has been great.
Using ampere, I find that the Google stock C->C and choetech c->c cable both charge near the same rate
I like the quality of the CHOETECH cables, this is the first time I've received them. They seem like they're very strong as they are very thick. I get a max 2.4A using the a->C cable

I also have this Cable and charger from Cheotech. To date I do not have any complaints about it and it seems to be working well. Like you stated, it does indeed charge at the same rate of the Google stock charger/cable. For the price, I would recommend it.
I just recently received the choetech c to c cable and the adapter, I think it charges about as fast as the factory charger does. Even if it is a bit slower for anyone, it's still way faster than what we would have without type c, so good enough to me.
The cables do seem to have good build quality, and with my usage of cables, I think they'll probably last pretty well. I've never really had problems with any cables from anywhere before though. But these cables are cheap too, which is nice with how expensive other cables can be. I'm probably gonna use the c to c cable for a car charger I recently bought, and then the adapter is a really nice backup adapter to keep around.

something seems wrong, like I said this charges at the same rate as the stock chargers for my 6p and 5x, and everyone else who has chimed in here and in the 6p thread has said the same thing. you might have a bum charger?

That could be the case. It took 2.5 hours to fully charge my dead 5x, and my phone was not being used during the charging period. That's definitely slower than the stock charger for me.
I received this cable and charger from Choetech a few weeks ago at a discount for an honest review as well.
Like others have indicated above it charges at the same rate as the 5x stock charger for me as well. Quality of both the charger and the cable is good. I keep this charger and cable plugged in on the opposite side of the house from my stock charger and cable. I also plan on taking it along when we travel so I have the convenience of fast charging.
It's nice to have a modestly priced product available that can offer the same charging speed as the stock charger.
