Led not lighting up for notifications - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got the Nexus 6 a few days ago. I could have sworn that before I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP, and rooted that when I got a text or email the LED would blink. The last day or so I noticed it isn't blinking when I get a notification. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I understood that although there is an LED under the top speaker it isn't activated. The only solution I remember seeing is using Lightflow on a rooted device. Are you sure your memory isn't playing tricks?

I don't believe the LED on this device has the ability to flash, just stay solid when active. Stock doesn't have this enabled, I have seen the setting to activate the LED in CM 13, but when I've used it there, it just stays solid when a notification comes in. I've never tried Lightflow so I do not know if that can flash the LED or not.

You can do software based flashing through lightflow but, it is a bit janky and has random intervals. Solid is probably what you want to do with the nexus since it isn't supported by the hardware (that's my understanding at least). In response to the OP, there is really no way you had the LED flash without having root

Only custom ROMs or being rooted allows activations of the LED. By default it is not used.

I ended up flashing Pure Nexus rom and it has the led enabled but it is solid only. Works for me. Thanks for the reply's guys.
And it is quite possible my eyes were playing tricks on me. I was transferring stuff from my old phone and maybe I mistook a notification on my old phone for the new one.

[Q] Capacitive Buttons will not shut off-MIUI

Running MIUI 1.10.7
The Capacitive buttons stay lit constantly, even when the phone is locked and the screen is off the buttons remain lit.
Might it have something to do with the bootloader I'm running? I had tried to load the i897 GB bootloader per the suggestion of someone else for another problem I was having. Anyway I can check which bootloader I'm running? And which bootloader is suggested? Links appreciated.
I should add, this was a new install. Because of other issues I was having, I flashed back to stock, flashed bootloader, then flashed MIUI. The button lights not shutting off has been apparent ever since first boot.
Thanks
I've never used MIUI so I can't say for sure, but this sounds like Backlight Notification (BLN). BLN uses the capacitive buttons like a notification LED since the Captivate doesn't have one.
If you clear all of your notifications and the lights go out when the screen turns off, that's what is going on. They'll come back on when you have a notification waiting.
hmmm... I think your right. They are off now and I don't have any notifications. Maybe it was recently implemented for the captivate, I don't recall seeing this the last few months. Thanks for the reply.

It was put in the new version of the platypus kernel.
Sent from my i-896 running miui 1.9.16.
That is a great feature, but how on earth do I turn it off?! The BLN app doesn't not do it (it gives me something like "BLN mod not installed")... nothing seems to work.

[Q] how to make the notification led to blink longer?

The notification light/led only blinks for about 5 minutes. Because im not looking at my phone every five minutes, i often miss the notification. Why only make it blink for 5 minutes? It defeats the purpose of a notification led if it doesnt notify you when theres something going on. So... Is there a way to make it blink until the notification is cleared?
OMG, you not got a faulty device are you? Because this does sound really ridiculous - I mean, what, I leave my phone on my desk for 10 mins, then I come back - and see no LED blinking because its already stopped?
I have almost decided on getting One, but this ridiculous "feature" just totally bummed me....
I'm pretty sure it's 5 minutes by design. My One X + is the same way. I called HTC and they said yes, 5 minutes by design. If I recall, no one could find an app either that would extend the time.
But surely it must be changeable by tweaking the kernel driver (one that works with LED hardware)?
Maybe some custom kernels patched this?

any solution for this yet? this is a huge annoyance for me too. doesn't make any sense that this would be the design...
I've installed an app called 'Easy Reminder' (by Edges Labs) off the Play Store - with this active, the LED blinks for at least an hour for missed calls and unread SMS. You can set audible reminders for calls and SMS, going up to 'infinite' repeat, and this seems to keep the LED alive as well. I've set it to infinite but not tested it past an hour. Also, for missed calls only, in the app you can separately set the LED to blink, but I've not activated that as the LED blinks natively anyway - regardless, the LED still blinks for at least an hour for both calls and sms.
The app hasn't been updated since Jan 2011 but seems to work fine - also, someone resolved the same problem on their HTC One X a while back (HTC One X forum) using a different reminder app, so perhaps other similar apps will work the same.

Notification LED

Hi,
is there a possibility to change the notification-led settings? Like that the LED should shine instantly or blink so long till i unlock the phone?
Thanks...
(I´ve the One for 2 days now and want to install TrickDroid)
There's not much you can do with the led
And you should flash trickdroid
Hmm, but why? Is it not possible to change the kernel "a little bit" so you can config the led?
You can download a led app from Google play but you got to be rooted it doesn't work very well
There's also LightFlow, but apparently there's some serious compatibility issues with the One at the moment. Perhaps when there's an update.
so as of right now, there is no way to extend the duration of the flashing led notification without rooting? it really doesn't make sense that it would turn off after a few minutes. it seems obvious that it should remain blinking until you've viewed the notification...or is it just me? can this be done if the phone has been rooted?

[Q] Notification LED isn´t blinking. How to solve this?

Hello,
First of all im new to this scene so dont hate me for my lack of knowledge. Currently im running Cynaogenmod 12 on my Nexus 6.
In Stock of this CM the LED Notificatio Light is enabled. But this LED isnt blinking, just shining all time. Is there any way to fix that issue?
P.S.: Today I want to change to Chroma ROM and Vindicator Kernel. Anyone who knows if this issue is solved in another Custom Rom?
Best Greetings,
Barely_Alive
The LED doesn't blink natively, it has to be done via software.
There is a post in the general section where people were using LightFlow and perhaps using Tasker to accomplish this, I think there is a custom ROM that claims to have a blinking LED. My guess would be either way could potentially be a little buggy, in that it won't work all the time and/or probably wouldn't be too friendly on the battery, as your device has to stay awake for the software to tell it to blink.

Right, but there is some settings that can make it blink, I think they combined it with Tasker. There is a thread in general that was quite popular where they talked about it.
Edit: This one or perhaps this one talk about how to do it with light flow (and whatever else they use). This is the custom ROM that includes it
Great! Thank you for your help

MeanPop has a blinking LED for notifications if you don't mind a stock base.

Nexus 6P running CM13, Notification LED won't work correctly

Before I even get started, I know CM13 is outdated/discontinued/insecure. I'm aware, I'm stuck with it for a while.
I've been trying to get the notification LED on my phone to work the way I want. I had no problems doing this with Light Flow on my old Samsung GS4. Things were not so peachy until I was reminded Cyanogenmod has built in controls for the notification LED. I have everything set up just the way I want it, it demos just fine when I'm punching in the settings. The problem is it won't work reliably when I set my phone down.
With my GS4, if the screen was off and I had notifications, the LED blinked accordingly. My N6P doesn't do that. I've caught it blinking a few times throughout my day, and had friends send me notifications while it's sitting on my desk, so I know it works sometimes. But the LED won't stay that way forever, eventually it just decides my notifications aren't important enough to me and stops blinking.
I'm having a hard time really pinning down it's logic because it seems to just work when it wants to. I have a theory that the way the 6P is really aggressive about saving battery, whatever service controls the LED is being woken up when a new notification comes in and eventually being put back to sleep, but I simply don't know enough to say. While I'm at it, I don't think I have any way of assigning priority to the different notifications (a text message is more important than an email, for example), so my color code scheme might as well go out the window.
I don't know why google seems to hate the notification LED so much, every time I try to google the issue I just get tons of pages telling me how Google hid it away and you can turn it back on in the settings for AOSP. Obviously none of that is helpful, maybe someone here has an answer?
@FoxtrotZero: Wrong forum. This is the Nexus 6 forum. Your device is here.
GFDI, didn't even know there was another device called the Nexus 6. Thanks.
