3: If the phone gets stuck in bootloop, restore the backup
4: verify the root with root checker/another root checker app

[Q] after root still can't use superuser

Hello all,
I rooted my HTC XL few days ago, It work fine. And then, i updated the software version yesterdays. After that my XL still have superuser icon but can't use the permission of superuser, i tried to root it again many times but it still don't work
Please help
Can you give us a little more detail? walk us through the steps you have taken and what ROM your using etc? it might be that you spot your error and fix it yourself or we are able to point you in the right direction?
additionally have you tried flashing a different ROM?
It may be some stupid question but what is rom?? I just use DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su that i found on the website and it succeed. Sorry if i can't explain clearly
Have you gone through the steps outlined in this post;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341127
If so you will need to follow this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18947861&postcount=3
to get your phone rooted properly, and install a custom ROM (easiest being http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327964 ) then you will have a fully working rooted phone with full superuser access
4.After root is complete pls visit market and update SU app. once done root will be fully functional and eliminate any future FCs
5. Also as an extra tip you can install SU UPDATE fixer from market to update your binaries to 3.0
I don't understand step 4 and 5. can you explain for me? what is SU app?
SU is SuperUser, try to imagine your phone like a PC, it has an 'Administrator' and a 'user'
You are the 'user'
SuperUser(SU) is kinda the 'Administrator'
SuperUser access allows 'You' to act as the 'Administrator' of your phone
so once you get to step 4 go into Market and search for 'SU App' and it should be there, free as always.. install it and then try to go into it from your phone. It might pop up saying (SuperUser Requires SU Access allow or deny) just allow it and see if it will load, if it does then you should get a screen like this;
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(only TitaniumBackup wont show there it should be empty for now)
look in the android market for an application called SuperUser by a dev named Chainsdd.
It is what allows the applications root access once you have rooted the phone. It needs to be updated.
SU Update fixer is also an app in the market, which helps to keep other files used in root up to date.
i go to step 5 by using SU Update Fixer but it said: Fix failed. Try downloading and flash ing an update.zip from androidsu.com
What should i do?
get the update.zip from them and flash it using ClockWorkMod Recovery
link -> http://androidsu.com/su-update-fixer/
if you have the recovery installed just do the usual (Vol - & Power) trick to get you into your Bootloader and from there select recovery
if you dont have the recovery installed follow this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18947861&postcount=3
i had this problem before. turned out i need to re-lock my bootloader and then unlock it again to perform the root

Help: I Wiped Everything

Good day. I am using viper one ROM and today I mistakenly wiped everything on my phone using TWRP recovery. So I can not boot my phone but I am able to enter TWRP. I tried to push ROM zip to phone using adb to data/media/0 but I cannot find the zip file anywhere, this is strange since the storage size on my phone showed in TWRP changes meaning the file is succesfully copied. My only choice now is use RUU which I never did before. I am coming from Samsung so HTC is new to me. I cannot run ADB sideload, it is stuck on starting when I do this.

I honestly never tried TWRP (though will do so in a minute or two, just out of curiosity), but did you try pushing the rom to /sdcard/ or /data/media/ (no 0)?
I'm downloading TWRP now, just out of curiosity :cyclops:
EDIT: ok, tried TWRP and it seems it does go to /data/media/0 as default, though it seems some files were hidden or I just overlooked them.
Anyway, try pushing to /data/media/ and then in TWRP use the "up one level" or whatever they called it, and you should see your zip there.
you can adb sideload in TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317986
I always just do adb push rom.zip /sdcard/Roms/rom.zip and it shows up fine.

Is my device rooted?

I would like to pose a simple question: How can I check if my Nexus 6 is rooted or not? Is there something that can betray it?

easiest way.. download a terminal emulator app, open it, then type in su(press enter). if it then shows a #, then you have root.

no root. did you flash supersu? do you have the supersu app installed? btw, just so that you know, su means superuser, which means root.
No I have not ever installed such things. Just once, I accidentally deleted some photos and I would like to recover them back and I used a freeware programme at my windows PC which gave me temporary root access, but I was unable to recover them and I cancelled the whole process. And therefore, I didn't know if I was rooted or not.
The problem is that I can not install the latest security patch/fix and I assumed I was rooted....

The program may have modified your system files. Once modified the OTA won't run. Would have to reflash stock.
If I just perform a factory reset?

Won't fix it if system files have been modified. Factory reset only clears cache and data. Does not touch system files. Have to fastboot flash the factory system image file.

[GUIDE] Installing/Flashing Treble ROMs

I am not responsible for people bricking their devices because they haven't made a backup.

Downloads
TWRP For P10 lite: HERE
ADB & Fastboot: HERE
The first step is to make a backup.
2. Download your Treble ROM, i recommend a GSI ROM.
In my case I'll be using Havoc-OS
Download: https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development/rom-havoc-os-8-1-t3819050
3. Go into TWRP and do a FACTORY RESET and then reboot into fastboot.
4. The only thing you need to do now is flash the ROM, so get your downloaded ROM & extract the .img file from it (if there is no .img file and you see other files, flash via twrp).
On your PC open the fastboot command prompt and type
fastboot -u flash system <YourImageFileHere>
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
After just type : "fastboot reboot" and wait until your phone boots into the system. You may need to flash google apps afterwards.
It is normal for the phone to reboot a couple times so be patient.
Congratz, your phone is not running a treble ROM with your stock ROM's vendor.

I just need backup Boot, System and data if i want go back to stock?
Bad idea to factory reset with TWRP, it doesn't do it clean enough.
You could get in serious problems by doing it, such as random apps crashing, sd unmounting and worse.
Safer option is to factory reset and wipe cache with stock recovery after every system flash.
I'm telling this from my own experience, I don't want people to mess up like I did :highfive:

Yes that should be enough, vendor stays the same anyway.. I recommend flashing roms designed for kirins cpus btw because there is a higher chance it will work

TWRP 3.4.0 & Root
Root and absolutely working TWRP 3.4.0 from nemo-nemo!
Oreo & Pie
Features
In the new TWRP and Root installation method described below, there is no need to format the Data partition to remove the encryption.
Thanks to TWRP's built-in FB Encryption (File Based Encryption), the contents of the Data partition are available with encryption preserved. The folders on the external memory have the correct names and structure.
- Forced DM-Verity removal
- Forcibly removing the protection of Motorola Hab
- Now there is no need to sew additional decoders when installing TWRP and receiving Root or when installing custom firmware!
- Full access to Oem partition modification directly from the running system using Root Explorer, which previously was only possible with Root obtained through SuperSu.
Installation Instruction
1. Download archive with files for installation TWRP and Magisk Google Drive
2. Extract files:
- twrp-3.4.0-nash-nemo-nemo.img to the folder adb with drivers adb & fastboot ;
- twrp-installer-3.4.0-nash-nemo-nemo.zip, Magisk-disable-dm-verity-v20.4.zip to the SD Card..
This is a special modification of Magisk for Motorola devices. You can read about it here Link
3. Boot the phone in fastboot mode, connect it to a PC and perform the following commands:
Code:
fastboot boot C:\adb\twrp-3.4.0-nash-nemo-nemo.img
4. The phone restart in to Recovery.
5. Go to the "Install" section. Click on "Select Storage" button, select Micro SD card, OK. Install twrp-installer-3.4.0-nash-nemo-nemo.zip and Magisk-disable-dm-verity-v20.4.zip.
6. Reboot into the system.
Attention! Backup creation after TWRP and Magisk installation should be done only after full booting into the system. Otherwise restoration of the Data partition backup will be interrupted with an Error 255.

Thanks a lot, everything works fine. The only issue I had was the russian language on the first boot in TWRP, but it is easy change to english.

Well, this is understandable. This TWRP was created by 4PDA developers.
do I have to flash Magisk-disable-dm-verity whenever I want to install a custom rom?
If you need a Root then of course yes.
Very good, works, thanks!
Will this method work for the Verizon version of the Z2 Force?
