Tried to flash firmware, caused an error. - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the SM-T810 variant and my android version is 5.1.1. I was trying to flash my first custom rom,OptimalRom and recieved an error when I tried to flash the firmware that the creator linked to in the instructions. Now my device is stuck on a blue screen that says "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch PC software." I tried the smart switch, but my device won't show up. So, I gave up on recovery and decided to do a factory reset, but I can't because I can't access the TWRP from this screen with home+power+volume up. However, I can get to the odin download screen and tried flashing the same firmware again, but it doesn't work.
Is there any way to get out of this screen or have I permanently bricked my device?

No your not bricked forever and I'll show you how to fix it, first download the android 5.1.1 twrp from HERE(http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-7-x-lollipop-5-1-1-t3205686) and make sure you have the optimalkernal and optimalrom on your sdcard or a external sd card before doing this.
1. Flash the TWRP 5.1.1 for your device with odin on the "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch PC software." screen Have Auto reboot and F. Reset Time checked. NOT RE-PARTITION OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!
2. let the device reboot and when the screen goes onto the samsung logo hold down the Power + Volume Down until the screen goes black, Then quickly switch to Home + Volume Up + Power and let TWRP boot up.
3. once TWRP boots up it should say that something is in Read-only mode just swipe and override permissions
4. Go into install and Find the OptimalRom and OptimalKernal Packages
5. Select OptimalRom FIRST and click Add more zips, then go to OptimalKernal and Swipe to confirm flash.
6. After the flash is done then there will be a option to wipe cache/dalvik do that.
7. Click the reboot.
8. you will come onto the samsung boot up screen with NO SOUND *hint hint*
9. It will take a while to boot up so please let it take its time.
10. tada! you now have OptimalRom installed and your device not bricked!
I did this on my tab s2 9.7" and it worked perfectly should work on yours to.
You may have a dirty install on your device (with all your apps from stock) so you can go into Twrp and do a wipe to clean all that out.
Hope I helped!

I have the Nook 8" and this write up helped a lot. Got my unit up and running again, thanks.
But I've also tried to get it back to the original (or more precisely stock 710) and keep running into issues. I'm currently rooted and have twrp, the OptimalKernal and ROM installed. I think my problem is order of steps and which utility I should be using for each (ODIN or twrp install).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll give it a try, but will it go back to Nook stock or Tab S2 stock? I'm looking to get to Tab S2 stock.

And the answer is -----
Straight Tab S2 :highfive:

Hi guys, I have the same issue. I have a T715Y model i purchased and it was not my language in there. So i tried to flash a stock rom from T715 ( i made it by mistake i didn't see the Y letter first) model but I have an error "occurend while updating the device software. Use the Emergency Recovery function in the Smart Switch PC Software" but it doesn't work with this software even with kies.
I just want to go stock but I don't know from witch country my tab s2 is provided. I say that because I downloaded a stock rom from sammobile for T715Y model from either the Malaysia or Thailand one's but I have a Failed Red Flag from odin.
Can Anyone help me. My TAC: 353403 and FAC: 07 Whitch country's T715Y model stock rom do I choose.
Thanks A lot.

I have never really had luck with the Emergency Software Recovery function on Smart Switch, only the Device Initialization tab. It does wipe everything out, but it did work for me.

Flash the latest version of the T715Y. Think Samsung boatloader does not allow downgrades.

The emergency software recovery didn't solve the problem. Even the newest firmware. The shop gave me a new one ...happy end
But i never face that kind of impossibility to install original firmware

i really need help for my galaxy tab gt - p1000

i'm not an english expert, but i'll try to explain you what happened, and i hope you can help me.
i have a samsung galaxy tab gt - p1000, with an old version of android, 2.3.3, because it's one of the devices wich haven't got the update. but i have bought it about 5 months ago, so i didn't want to waste it. so i decided to put in it the new android version ice cream sandwich, 4.0. and i followed theese instructions:
Requirements and Reminders
To be able to flash the MIUI 4 Alpha ROM on your Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000, you need to satisfy the following requirements:
Root your Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ and install ClockworkMod Recovery on it.
Fully charge your tablet’s battery.
Back up all important files and data on your device ( i.e. bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs, etc.).
Download the MIUI 4 Alpha ROM for the Galaxy Tab from here and save the file to your computer.
The procedure has been tested to work on the Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. It may or may not work on other models.
Use the instructions at your own risk. We shall not be held responsible for any damage to your phone if you follow these instructions.
Installation
Here’s how to install MIUI 4 ICS on your Galaxy Tab 7″:
Connect your tablet to your PC.
Copy the MIUI 4 ROM to your device’s internal storage.
Disconnect your tablet from the PC.
Turn off your tablet.
Reboot the Galaxy Tab into ClockworkMod Recovery by holding down the Volume Up key and the Power button simultaneously.
Once the device has booted into ClockworkMod Recovery, create a backup of your currently working ROM. You can do this from thestyle=”font-style: italic;”>Backup and Restore > Backupmenu. This backup will come in handy in case you want to revert to the original ROM of your device.
From the recovery menu, select “Wipe data/ factory reset” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
Select “Wipe Cache partition” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
Select “Advanced”, then “Wipe Dalvik cache” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
With your phone data completely wiped, you may now install the MIUI 4 ROM. From the recovery menu, select “Install zip from SD card”.
Select “Choose zip from SD card” and choose the ROM file that you have copied to your tablet earlier.
Confirm the installation by choosing “Yes”. The ROM will be flashed after confirmation.
Reboot your device.
Congratulations! You now have Ice Cream Sandwich (via MIUI 4 Alpha) on your Galaxy Tab P1000.
but at point 8 or 9, (i don't remember, but i think it isn't too much important) i had to stop, because i stucked. so i reboot the device, and i've formatted it. the device worked like always, and so i decided to download rom manager from the market. when i launched the application i saw that i could flash the system that i had put in the device directly from there. so i touched that option and i followed the first instructions. i flash the system as the rom mangaer app told me. but when the device reboot for installing, and doing it's thing (i'm not a computer and technology expert to D: ) it stopped at the first screen, ( the one that says "galaxy tab, samsung"), and it didn't go ahead. so i reboot in recovery mode switching off the device and rebooting it pulling the volume up button + the power button, but it doesn't worked. so i tried to reboot it pulling volum down button + power button and appeared a yellow triangle with the android man and the written: downloading do not turn off target
but it stucked there like the first screen. i waited that the device discharged, and i charged it another time, but when i charge it, it appear on the screen the battery icon, but it is blocked. and now i can't open it, and it doesn't work or answer at all.
i know that it's possible that i made mistakes following the instructions, or the instructions doesn't worked.... but now, how can i reboot or format my device.
i only need to reuse, the information or the documents in it are not important.
if you can, help me, thanks
Read my post here. Should be same way.

You can stop right after flashing gb-stock-safe-v5
But you would probably want to go all the way and try overcome from.

If you are getting the download screen then flash it with stock firmware. You can download from samfirmware.com for gt P1000, Android 2.3.6 is available. Just use Odin and flash. You can get a working tab.

Hey guy, I can't give you all links now...but I will help you! I think I can
Excuse my spelling too, I am Russian and English is not my native language.
Watch the team overcome.net website for restock bundle and overcome kernel.
There are some modems, from,Odin in the bundle. I am not very good in English, please read some instructions on flashing roms by Odin, I can't fully explain...
You just connect your tab to Odin via download mode and flash restock. And then you flash kernel. OK, you have a clean 2.3 rom, but I really want you to go to CyanogenMod download center and download the latest nightly build. (OK, I don't know how to access it I just go to Devices page, choose any phone, select NIGHTLY BUILDS link and search for p1 in the list and download the nightly and flash it.
Something you can find or can't.
After flashing kernel for restock go to recovery and do wipe user data/factory reset and wipe cache. The system will startup then. Without this you'll get an infinite boot.
The overcome kernel will convert your file system. Please wait for it when your tab is charged and is booting. A robogirl will talk to you then
After flashing CM wipe it too!
Download GApps on goo.im to have Market and other Google apps! (Flashing via recovery)
I think that is all. If you have problems, send me a message, I'll try to help! Good luck!
you have to return to stable xxjq1 gingerbread. you have a soft brick. follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133590
then flash chainfire's cwm
after that, follow this thread:

Please thank me if you found it useful
ok, but i can't download the right firmware from sammobile.com
can someone explain me how to download the right firmware from the site, and how to choose the correct one? thanks
Go to www.samfirmware.com and select the firmware you want to download.

You have indeed sofbricked your tab.
Google for "Overcome guide for galaxy tab 7" (can't post any links yet)
There you can find a direct link for the file "GB-stock-safe_v5.zip".
This contains the needed firmware and Odin tool to flash it.
Follow the soft brick guide given by gogol1996 with the content of the zipfile and you're back in business.

No such thing as a "soft brick". It just a term that newbies like to throw about for any occasion they haven't flashed device correctly and dont know how to use download mode or recovery to get their OS back up and running.
Your device is either "bricked" or it isnt. If you can use download or recovery, it isnt.
Here we go again.
What about if you can get to download mode but the internal flash is stuffed?
A few guys here got that. Not a brick?

Ok sorry, edited. If you can "use" download/recovery its not bricked.
99.9% of times the term "soft brick" is used though its simply that the user doesn't know how to use download mode and they have screwed up rom flash/kernel, get no boot or just boot loop etc and cant use recovery.
I like your original definition else where that says it is not bricked as long as you can flash it.
But that is obvious.

Thanks to all of you, i have fixed my device. now it goes in recovery mode and in downloading mode. i guess i have only to put a new version of android on it and i'm cool
Depending on your luck.
Some people can go to download mode but flash keep failing due to damaged internal SD.
You can read about here somewhere.
Good luck.

That usually only happens though when you are flashing via USB and you lose power or pull cable early etc, ie pull handbrake when flooring it
so there is a possible brick even if you have download/recovery mode.. another new thing I learn daily.

[Q] updated without rooting!!!!

hello guys!
don't know if any one have done this before but am sure i did something really stupid!
here i have a galaxy s plus
and i tried to update it to jelly bean!
and just went to "Echn!kan"
and followed the steps ...
but i still get back to the booting menu
and tried it lots of times but nothing happened
and thin i read some where that i should root the system before doing any thing !!!
and that's what i didn't do!!!
so now i have a really a empty phone!!!
dose any one have an idea to solve this?????
Can you tell me exactly which steps you followed and what the current situation of your phone is?
As far as I know you don't need to be rooted before you flash another ROM.
You're saying "but i still get back to the booting menu", do you mean that every time you turn on the phone you end up in the recovery? In that case you are experiencing a simple bootloop which can be solved in a couple of minutes.
u need to have cwm recovery before flashing roms . stock recovery wont work , i think u ended up in a bootloop ... did u made a backup ??
flashing with odin through downlod mode will solve ur problem

this is the steps i followed!
-----------------------------
Before you Proceed –>>
Make sure you have Samsung Galaxy S Plus with model number i9001 only. Trying this tutorial on a different device may eventually brick your device.
You need to have Recovery Image installed on your device. If not then check out How To Install Clockwork Mod Recovery On Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001.
Backup all your personal information on your device.
Use AppBak to backup all your apps.
Use SMS Backup and Restore to backup messages.
You can backup your contacts using gmail .
Charge your device battery with atleast 75% of power.
Make sure that you have device drivers installed for your Samsung Galaxy S Plus. If not, then download them from here.
Enable USB Debugging mode. Go to Options > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
How To Update Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 To Android Jelly Bean 4.1 | CM10 ROM
First you need to download the Cyanogen Mod 10 Rom file and Google apps package and save it to a convenient folder on your PC.
Connect your device to your PC via USB cable.
Copy the downloaded file on the internal SD card of your phone.
Now turn off your phone and boot your phone into recovery mode.
Now to get in the Recovery Mode, press and hold Volume Up + Home buttons together until recovery mode screens turns up.
Now select ‘ Wipe data/Factory reset ‘ and confirm on the next screen by pressing power button.
Now select ‘ Wipe cache ‘ and confirm by pressing power button.
Now select ‘ Advanced –> Wipe Dalvik cache ‘ and confirm by pressing power button .
Then select ‘ Flash ZIP From SD Card ‘ and then select Choose ZIP From SD Card and browse to the CyanogenMod 10 Rom zip file that you copied to your device’s SD card in step 3. Select the file and confirm by pressing power button. The installation will start.
Once the installation is finished, install the google apps package by following step 9.
When you finish installing google apps package, select ‘ Go back ‘ and select ‘ Reboot system now ‘.
Now your device will boot with the whole new Look and feel of Jelly Bean 4.1.
---------------------------------
and i meant with getting back to the menu that when i finish installing the rom and google apps i get back to the recovery menu as nothing happend!!!
and now i was disparately trying to backup the system and same nothing changes!!!
is my phone dead ?!!

Relax, we'll be able to get your phone up and running again!
As pretty much everyone so far was already thinking, you're probably just experiencing a bootloop. This is only a minor issue, I've had it too. Just follow the instructions you find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24831012&postcount=1330
If all goes well, your phone should start up in normally again. If you have any more questions just let us know.

Bro You dont neeed to go to Download Mode to install CWM. Download mode is used to Unbrick/Unroot Galaxy Ace To stock using odin. To Install CWM You need to go to Recovery Mode.
In Galaxy Ace you go to Recovery Mode by Holding Home/Back button and Power On Button. And keep them holding until you see the samsung logo on samsung logo leave the Power on but dont leave the Home until it takes you to the Recovery.
If you want to flash a custom recovery see my thread.
Good Luck.

1. Download the CWM recovery file from
here.
2. Save this file on your computer.
3. Then, connect the handset with the
computer by using the USB cord.
4. Now, copy paste or just drag and drop
the file from the computer to your
phone’s SD card.
5. You can now disconnect the phone
from the computer by unplugging the
USB cable.
6. Turn off the Ace.
7. Reboot in recovery: press and hold the
Power and Home buttons.
8. From recovery select “install zip from
SD card” followed by “choose zip from
SD card”.
9. Pick the downloaded file from the SD
card and start the flashing process.
10. Don’t make any other changes.
11. In the end select “+++go back+++” and
“reboot system now”.
Now, you can reboot your device once
more and reach CWM recovery in order to
test the same. Do tell us how things worked
for you and if the CWM recovery image has
been successfully installed on your
Samsung Galaxy Ace smartphone. The best
part is that you can now look forward in
installing a custom ROM firmware on your
device

Hey guys I am in need of some urgent assistance and if anybody can help me solve this I am willing to send some funds via PayPal for the assistance.
When I turn on my phone I am prompted with this screen. It does not even boot into the Samsung splash screen and I cannot boot my phone into. The screen where you can do a factory reset.
Odin name (high speed)
Product name SM-N910t
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
system Status:CUSTOM
reactivation lock : on
KNOX WARRANTY VOID:0*1 (4)
qualcom secure boot:Enable (cab)
RP SWREV:S1 T1, A1, A1, P1
secure download: enable
Then it says Phone stuck on "firmware upgrade encountered an issue screen please select recovery mode in kies and try again.
Now if I take the battery out I am still able to press the hold+power+volume down button to get my phone into download mode however I have tried to flash the firmware using Odin and the tmobile stock firmware as indicated in a thread here by our fellow xda developers but have had no luck.
I have also downloaded kies3 from the Samsung website and still no luck it doesn't even recognize my device.
I am dam near about to break out in tears because of this (lol) I know There's got to be someone an expert out here that can help me out. Sorry for the long post and I'm too sad to even come up with a catchy ending regarding a potato.
Please help !!!!

Your phone is NOT bricked, a bricked phone is dead and you would see nothing on the screen,
it would remain black and you would not see the softkey leds light up either.
Have you tried going into Recovery Mode (not download mode)?
If you can get into into Recovery Mode select "factory reset" and
then select "reboot".
It should reboot normal more or less unless you formatted /system
before this happened.
Do you have stock recovery or twrp custom recovery?
If you had twrp installed it most likely means that you were also
rooted.
That means that you can flash a zip file custom rom if you have
one in your internal or external sdcard.
If you don't have a a zip file rom in internal or external sdcard then you will need to remove the
external sdcard and plug it into an adaptor which plugs into the computer so you can then copy
a zip file rom onto your external sdcard and replace it in your phone so you can flash the rom..
If you cannot boot into recovery then try removing the battery, wait 10 seconds and replace the
battery then hold down the home/power/volumeUP buttons all at the same time until you see tiny
blue text on the top left side of the screen.
Right before you see the blue writing you should also feel a little vibration from the phone.
If you can flash a zip file rom in twrp custom recovey make sure that you do a full and complete wipe including system, data,
cache, dalvik cache and last but not least do a factory reset before flashing or if you prefer restoring a nandroid backup..
If worst comes to worst and you don't have twrp recovery then you need to Odin flash twrp (the TAR version) before doing anything else.

Thanks for your response!
I have tried that however whenever I turn on my my phone it takes me to the screen that I mentioned above automatically. I will try to enter recovery mode using Android SDK / ADB on Windows.
Forgive my ignorance but I don't believe I had any recovery installed which I now realize was HUGE Mistake, However I do know that my phone was rooted since I rooted it myself.
I am curious about "If worst comes to worst and you don't have twrp recovery then you need to Odin flash twrp (the TAR version) before doing anything else."
I feel like that is part of the steps I need to take to resolve this issue. Any tutorial links on this would be greatly appreciated.!
Thank you so much although I messed this up I am somewhat tech Savvy and it feels great to have support from other like minded individuals =)

By any chance do you have Reactivation Lock: on?
If so that could be the cause of our issues.
I got stuck at this on my Note 3 once (with twrp custom recovery installed), turned out I had to flash the stock recovery before Odin restoring. Never figured out why it worked when download mode/Odin had not. Worth trying if you're completely out of ideas.

I will give this a try do you happen to have some kind of tutorial link on where to get this done?
I found the solution!!!!!!
OK GUYS I AM EXCITED TO SHARE MY SOLUTION WITH YOU ALL!!
What I did is flash twrp recovery with ODIN but it didnt work... it kept saying Get PIT Partition in the ODIN LOG.
So I tried flashing twrp recovery once again but this time I added the SM-N910T PIT Partition file I found online. But what I did is unchecked the Re-partition tab in ODIN thiss si what DID The trick!
The phone was able to go past the ODIN process and stopped on "RESET" in ODIN. So My Note 4 then Reset into Download mode and then this is where I reset ODIN flashed the Stock recovery for T-Mobile Note 4.
It took about 3 to 5 minutes to complete and I finally got that sweet SUCCESS on ODIn.
My phone then restarted and Voila! I have my note 4 in working condition once again!
THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP AND I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT AS WELL.

Well, I have no indication of why you think you booted into recovery...what are you stuck in, ODIN screens? Get out of that by just having ODIN get the PIT and reboot.
Relay relevant error messages/workaround failures if you are stuck...

I fixed the problem. After flashing the TWRP with Odin, I removed the battery and booted straight into recovery mode instead of booting normally first. The reason is because Android automatically replaced TWRP when I booted normally, before I could boot into TWRP.
This TWRP i not used for Samsung s5 Neo s903f because i see Samsung s5 s900 versions phones and not s5 neo version. I gonna look where Google hiden stuff for s903f phone
