Netflix/HULU/Google Play mov only play in SD (480p), any solution to get HD playback? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, basically every streaming service I have tried only play back in SD, not HD. Is this a common issue for the S2? Is there any way to get it to work in HD?
I hate to say it but if not this might be going back to BestBuy today :/
Thanks!

Sure am. Can you verify that HD works with this link? Should play a stream that tells you what resolution and bitrate you are actually seeing. Mine stays at 720x480, while my Nexus 7 shows 1920x1080. Bitrates are 1750 vs 5000+ respectively.

Oh, also, I am on the 8.0" WiFi US model if that matters.

Looks like I found my answer. The tablet is not on the Netflix HD list. So I guess none of them can play it.

i already brought this up in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/help/netflix-hd-tab-s2-t3274295 . I'm quite angry since the tab s2 is marketed as an ipad air 2 competitor and it doesnt support full HD streaming. If you want to find out more about the certification process just google netflix android HD DRM. The thing is, the tablet has to be certified by Netflix. I know for a fact, that the SoC, the Exynos 5433, supports widevine Level 1 DRM technology (basically the lowest is level 3 which wouldn't be enough for HD) and HDCP 1.x which also should be enough for HD streaming. Youtube support 1080p60 videos so it's definitely not a performance issue of hardware. I suspect that the unlocked bootloader is a problem for the content providers, so if Samsung was to lock the bootloader and renegotiate with Netflix or at least ask what exactly is missing for it to be certified and add that through an update. I mean we pay for a premium tablet and a premium service, we should get what we pay for. I made contact with Netflix and Samsung, they said they would look into it. Quite curious if they actually do something, i'm still hoping! If this is an issue for you, feel free to contact themselves, so this problem can be solved, though I guess it's mostly Samsung that has to do something with the next update.

I'm also only getting 480p on Netflix, but on my unrooted, KNOX-not-tripped, SM-T810, it has no trouble achieving Widevine Level 1 DRM:
Code:
2622 WVCdm D Instantiating CDM.
2622 WVCdm I CdmEngine::QueryStatus
2622 WVCdm I Level3 Library Dec 11 2014 16:13:16
2622 WVCdm W Could not read /data/mediadrm/IDM1013/ay64.dat2: No such file or directory
2622 WVCdm D OEMCrypto_Initialize Level 1 success. I will use level 1.
2622 WVCdm I L3 Terminate.
Google Play, on the other hand, is able to achieve Level 1 as well and streams HD just fine (noticeably better quality than Netflix, even with Google's way-too-high compression). Maybe HD is being blocked on Netflix's side? They've blocked "unsupported" devices based on the device name in the past.

This device is more than able to run HD video on netflix and hulu. However I ran across an issue where I had to delete the following file for hulu to work at all. Worth a try for those of you who are rooted. Just make a backup first.
I deleted this file and hulu works.

Miracast set top box!!

Hey,
I've just seen a Miracast set top box from Netgear. This could be the solution to the missing HDMI out of the Nexus 7!

Did you watch the Video? The Tegra 3 can do it. I don't know more... but I hope there will be a software update to do it.

i do know the tegra 3 is miracast capable i dont think i can post a link so ill just post what i found, this is dated july 27 2012.
Nvidia, a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, announced that it's supporting the new Miracast WiFi-Direct based protocol which is expected to launch by the Wi-Fi Alliance within the next few months.
For the uninitiated, Miracast will be an open standard, so any mobile device or display manufacturer will be able to implement the technology. It will also be a direct competitor to closed eco-systems like Intel's WiDi and Apple's AirPlay which enable users to wirelessly stream videos and games to external displays.
There are also other open standards for streaming media such as DLNA, but these are plagued with interoperability issues that have limited their traction in the market place. To address the limitations of these solutions, the Wi-Fi Alliance created its upcoming open wireless display standard called Miracast.
"Underpinning the Miracast specification is Wi-Fi Direct – a specification defined for peer-to-peer, direct wireless connectivity between devices," Nvidia said on Thursday in its whitepaper. "Miracast Certified devices will be able to connect with each other directly, without the mediation of a wireless access point, by leveraging the functionality introduced by Wi-Fi Direct. When two devices connect with each other directly, one assumes the role of the source (transmitting device) and the other becomes a sink (the devices receiving and rendering the content to the user)."
Nvidia said that it has developed a Miracast wireless display stack that is Tegra 3 optimized and can be integrated into the Tegra mobile platform. This source-side solution enables tablet and phone OEMs to implement a Miracast certifiable product by combining the Tegra application processor and compatible Tegra Android BSP package just as they do today.
"The Tegra optimized Miracast solution is comprised of two major components – the multimedia (video/audio) processing block and the industry compliant wireless display networking stack," Nvidia explained. "The multimedia processing block takes advantage of Tegra’s multi-core graphics engine and dedicated hardware video/audio codecs to accelerate the decoding of video content, render graphics surfaces and perform the final compositing operations before encoding into a H.264 bit stream to be wirelessly transmitted."
We are miracast certified, however there needs to be an app to activate this tech for us, I believe, but if they have the set top box, chances are there's an app for it, too.
All I can say is, yay! Step in the right direction. -Ara

Miracast is a new standard for wireless display. So basically a mirrored image or maybe a second screen. I'm hoping I could widi a video and control it all with my tablet/phone.

That's how you play full hd shows/movies/music with no dramas its been around for ages. Best part is wd keep updating the firmware so it plays anything I throw at it.
Gaming well you can't do that but if you can't see the 7" screen right in front of you well you'd probably find it more beneficial to invest in glasses.
It also has some other benefits too, bubble upnp is one of the best things I have come across.
Wdtvlive and Bubble upnp a match made in Sofia Vergara's underpants.

Got it. I didn't see the video.
So I am assuming this is the first TV Box(similar to like a Roku or something) that allows us to wirelessly display our Nexus to our HDTV? That's what I am seeing. Also it's only in Germany at the moment.
But the question is, do our Nexus 7's natively support something like this? I am assuming this needs development, like an app or software update.
Any news on this?
Not sure I see the point of this. I already have a WD Live that can stream all my video from my PC to my TV. Why would I put video on my N7, then send to my TV when I can just send it directly to my TV? Even the 16 GB N7 can maybe just barely hold a decently encoded movie at full 1080p. I just don't think I have any content on my N7 that cannot be sent to my TV in an easier, higher quality way.
Edit: Been thinking about this. Seriously, what do you use it for? The only thing I could come up with is letting your friends watch you play a game on the tablet or something. Every other scenario I can think of has a better solution.

It's not only for videos. I have a tf101 transformer and used it to give presentations at the university with HDMI out. The point is to mirror the screen content of your device and not only play back media.
And it looks promising with the low latency.

Emulation Gaming. Plug your tablet up to the TV and use a PS3 gamepad for true retro couch gaming.
I don't stream movies and such, as I'd rather just watch them off the device.
I'm curious about this as well.
Here's some more info about it that I dug up from arstechnica.
In most cases, Miracast can be implemented in software alone, Robinson said. It has a head start, because Android already supports WiFi Direct since version 4.0 . But hardware modifications will help optimize devices for the type of compression, decoding, and encoding Miracast equipment will have to perform, he said.

I've been watching for (complete) Miracast solutions for a while now. This capability is already starting to play a big role in education on the iPad courtesy of AirPlay mirroring. I have no idea why other vendors are sitting on this.
Anyway, the NTV200S is supposed to be compatible with a firmware update. Some more info here:

Another big feature that miracast will add is the ability to display your phone's display on your tablet. This way you could always be on your tablet, but at anytime access all the features of your phone.

Mi Max 2 and Netflix HD

So from this page https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939 the Mi Max 2 is not supported for NetFlix HD although it has a FHD screen.
I'm confused though, is this only for streaming? What if I download in "best quality" and then watch? Will it still not play in HD? Anyone had any experience with this?

I don't use any modifications. Both my Android TV player and apparently the Mi Max 2 are not supported, both are working fine with no modifications (though the android TV player need to download the APK from Aptoide since it can't from the play store).

I'm actually a beta tester of miui10 (China version), I really don't know why you have problems while I don't...
Just in case I've added screenshots of my HD settings. Finally started watching Luke Cage.
Strange behavior
I currently running MUI10.3 9.2.14 and it the last version to support netflix up to date version.
If i update my MUI to a newer version netflix isn't support anymore and i need to download a older version with much less featuring.
I try to understand what going on.
you guys who claim to watch Netflix in HD should search in Netflix for "test patterns" and it will show whether you're watching in HD or you simple just think that based on some data usage settings...
That's because the Mi Max 2 phone has a DRM Widevine license class 3, This will restrict paid services like Netflix to play a video at maximum resolution of 540p. It won't matter if you have a full HD display or quadHD display if your DRM license is class 3. This was same issue with POCO F1 when it was launched. However, POCO F1 received an update and the Widevine license was updated to class 1. Although the Widevine license won't affect videos that you store on your phone(not Netflix), they can still play in full HD.
Most android phones carry a DRM widevine license 3. How to check this?
Go to your playstore and download app called DRM info and once installed it will show you the DRM license class of your phone.
Cheers!!!

Netflix on the OnePlus 7 Pro [DISCUSSION]

I would like to make this into a discussion, the topic is Netflix content on the OnePlus 7 Pro and any other smartphone with a HDR Netflix certification.
Here are my thoughts:
As we all know, the OP7 Pro made it on the list of Netflix HDR HD supported devices. What does this mean? If you don't unlock the bootloader (or use a modded version of Netflix) you will not be able to watch that "crisp" high definition HDR content on your phone. I am okey with that, it's a choice everybody can make. What I do not like at all is how Netflix advertises their HD content towards people who own devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10 etc, devices with good, QHD+ resolution displays. Why? You might have noticed that Netflix never mentioned the term "FHD, QHD, UHD", only "SD, HD, HDR". They keep talking about a mobile cinema experience thanks to HDR on your mobile device, which does include tablets by the way, without telling the users that even though they own a device that can can display a high pixel count like the OnePlus 7 Pro. To give you a comparison, this is what your OnePlus 7 Pro can actually show versus what Netflix allows the consumer to see:
OnePlus 7 Pro (3120 x 1440)
4.49 Million*Pixels (4492800 to be precise)
High Definition HDR Content (1280 x 720)
0.92 Million Pixels ( 921600 pixels)
That is the maximum resolution Netflix sends to your phone, not a single pixel more than that. Is HDR nice to have? Yes it is, it's a good compromise when it comes to image quality and the amount of data. Am I, a consumer who pays 16$ per month for the UHD Netflix subscription disappointed? Hell yeah. 5G is coming this year and Netflix decides that tHe hUmAn eYe cAn't sEE aBoVe 720p 29.99FPS. Jokes aside, I think that it is time that they allow higher resolution for mobile devices, I don't need 4K right away on a screen where I can't even see that many pixels, but I did some testing and compared two 720p Netflix streamed movies to a 1080p non-HDR and a 4K offline version (18GB file from a BluRay) and even though 720p HDR might look pretty close to 1080p non-HDR it definetly can't compete with content which can use the screens full potentíal. And considering that 5G is already or almost here, depending on your region, it would be very sad if Netflix decided not to offer content in 1440p or even UHD for smartphones and tablets.
What are your thoughts? Share them with us!
Maybe it's not due to HDR but I was comparing streams of an episode of Bodyguard on Netflix on my 7 Pro and Note 9, both full brightness, playing at the same time and I have to say the 7 Pro blows the Note 9 out of the water. I could see more details from the shadows on the 7 pro but both streams definitely looked Full HD at least.

Yeah, if HDR content is playing. Phones (I only have Samsung and OnePlus to check) will change their color profile to natural. So if you set it to something like vibrant, then exit a HDR video then you will see color looks very different form vibrant profile.

What I hate is the fact that they allow 1080p on iPhones but not on android anymore. I say anymore because Im pretty sure Netflix with 4.x.x something suporrted 1080p streaming. For what ever reason they removed it. Just be like YouTube and let me select the resolution ffs. I don't even pay for YouTube yet they have better support for HD content.
Seems that it doesn't really matter (at least to me). My eyes can see some great detail in people's faces and other objects on my phone's display. To my eyes, that's plenty of HD to me. *shrugs*
I checked my FF browser and it's showing full HD. That's actually where I watch 90% of my Netflix (and Amazon) streams, anyway. But this is an interesting topic, nonetheless.
After Netflix removed the ctrl-alt-shft-s command for no apparent reason than a big F-you to its customers, I will return to piracy before I upgrade to 4K/HDR from my current FHD plan. Without that command to lock in bit-rate even 1080P is iffy on my 100 Mb fiber connection. I hope the Disney+/Hulu or Warner/HBO/ATT plan is competitive because Netflix is really starting to piss me off.
Back on topic, does HDR really make a big difference on a tiny screen?

There are movies in 1080 you can watch on OP7P on Netflix. They are encoded using VP9 and Netflix said they are slowly encoding more movies to be available in 1080 on mobile.

It annoys me, I want to watch movies and TV series in good quality. So I give them money for a subscription expecting proper quality in return, but I get Full HD? I don't know. I used to watch very few soap operas, because I worked a lot. But during last year's quarantine, I switched to working remotely. And then there was a lot of time. I didn't have the money for paid subscriptions, and so I went to 123 movies. The platform surprised me with its picture and sound quality, there is a very high picture resolution.

In upper right corner it says "null kbps, 1920:1080, PAR 1:1 , 8 bpc, 23.976 fps" I think Netflix is ok...it seems it is not triggering HDR but maybe because the test doesn't support it.

How did you notice it isn't HD? Mine seems to be in HD on my rooted MI9T pro... How can I check?

It looks like actual crap, there are no details, it shows compression arctifacts on complex scenes and fast moving objects...like it is running on 240p or 360p. Moreover if the video is running in FullHD the Prime video player will show 1080p HD under the progress bar just next to the minutes counter.
I am sure it is not a bandwidth problem since I've got gigabit fiber at home and fast 4G+ Data. Tested speed before reproducing were 522Mbps on WiFi and 130Mbps on 4G+, tested both on ookla and fast.com
EDIT: in the settings menu I've selected maximum streaming and quality, but it says that the Data consumption will be 0.46GB per hour...it seems really lo...what you guys get? Could anyone with a locked and stock device please share a screenshot of the quality settings?
I can't stream in HD even on a stock device. As far as I know, noone can.

Same on stock. Quality is not as bad as you describe but I can see a bit of compression like its's 720 maybe. Netflix on the test chart says 720p max for me (even on the 1080p test) but Netflix settings say that HDR 1080 is supported

It should be possible since Amazon whitelisted our device in December, so we should be able to stream content at full resolution as reported in some articles...I think I have the EEA Rom, and maybe only the Global Rom Is whitelisted...or maybe only Raphael and not Raphaelin...i've seen screenshot of FullHD content running on the device (with locked bootloader)

I'm running at full quality on Netflix and I am sure of that...I watched some Irish man content and it even triggered HDR on and it was running at full res, with noticeably high quality. While on Prime Video watching TGT Seamen I can notice crap quality when the boats are sprinkling water and with the sea surface...

Okok I can confirm that even on stock I can't see hd content on Amazon, so it's most likely a whitelist problem

Care to share the screenshot? I've contacted both Amazon and Xiaomi, Amazon says it's not their fault, Xiaomi says they will bring compatibility in a "future update" (aka never).

Question S8+ HDR10 for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video & Disney+

Hi all, about to purchase the S8+ but would like to get confirmation on how the S8+ performs on these three streaming apps. Does it deliver HDR on all three, or just full HD? Concerned as seeing Netflix forums changing woodvine levels on various tablets. Thanks!

Can't give you an answer for APV or Disney+, but the Tab S8+ does indeed support full HD playback and has Widevine Level 1. It also has support for HDR10+. I have a rooted S8+ and I enjoy full HD content on it regularly.
Thanks SavXL. And in Netflix can you watch in HDR or just full HD? Just trying make sure I'll get most out of the screen

It only shows the max resolution as full HD for me.
Side note, i do not think anyone adapted HDR10+ outside of Amazon.
The thing about HDR+ is that it is heavily supported by Samsung and Amazon, as a gimmick against DolbyVision. From what i know, which may have changed, you wont get HDR10+ from Netflix, Apple TV and Disney+.
