S6 Hotspot/Tethering - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6

DirecTV customer who can come to AT&T for $140/mo, 2-lines Unlimited Everything. Fine print gotcha is no tether/hotspot.
Is there a work-around since I guess my rooting days are over with this phone?
Thanks.

if you have root you can flash the hotspot hack and this will get your hotspot to work, now if you dont have root.
what i did was download clockworkmod app on your galaxy s6 from play store and then follow the instructions it gives you to tether to your computer.
if you need detailed info i have it, i just wrote down some basic stuff to not waste my time

I don't think the S6 is rootable anymore?

Bumping this as I'm thinking about jumping on the unlimited data deal and getting an S6 edge during the BOGO free deal coming up. Any update OP?

unlikely that any newly purchased device will still come with rootable firmware.

Switching from verizon...

currently i have a note 4 with verizon, but going to switch
i currently have unlimited data with vz, im grandfathered, and going to the 2 lines for 100$ with unlimited data (only tethering is throttled, and for those who root t-mobile won't be able to differentiate between on device data and tethered right?).
Service, how is it? I live in phoenix, don't travel much but if i do i'm never in rural areas. I do go to NYC\Queens are about once a month.
Customer service, How is it?
Billing expectations, how is it?
Thanks for your input guys, i'm ready to make the jump just need some input-
Should try prepaid T-Mobile first. Service might suck and then you will be mad. Or it could same or better and wonder why you did t switch as fast as you could.

I live in DC but travel back and forth to my hometown which is (Brooklyn, NY). The service is great within any major city. I've had bad service in West Virginia (which is pretty rural).
I honestly think T-Mobile's customer service is great and if I'm not mistaken they work 24/7.
Right now my girlfriend and I are on the "2 for $100" family plan that you speak of and it would of been 2 for $100 but we both have financed phones (she has the S5 & I have the Note 4) and we both have insurance. Our bill is roughly $180.
Conclusion, its not a bad deal and what I love is no contract and we have JUMP which allows us to switch phones as many times as we want (for a fee of course).

I was a long time VZW customer for 14 years living in Chicago. I recently moved to Scottsdale in August. The recent Galaxy S4 OTA from VZW rendered my phone useless. Twelve to twenty reboots daily. After 6 replacements Verizon refused to switch out to another model phone. Tech Support had the balls to suggest that I buy a phone on Craigslist even though my current phone was still under factory warranty. I made the switch to T-Mobile in November and couldn't be happier. Faster and better LTE coverage than VZW. Plus unlocked bootloaders and more affordable plans. TMO just announced their Data Stash program effective 1/15/15. Another win win for the Un Carrier...... Go for it my friend

the answer i was looking for, you've made my decision. Getting two Note 4's ,, was considering Nexus 6 but na, i have the note 4 with vz and i hate it because of the locked bootloader too.
I worked for vz corp in chandler for the last 9.5 years up to November 1st. So Yeah, you're experience sounds about right, and i def don't wanna be treated like a VZ Consumer so I have til the end of the month before i'm converted back to a consumer account with consumer pricing..
Thank you all for your opinions...
I will be going for the 2 for 100$ with the monthly payments and insurance i'm also about 180$
Q: can i pay the phone off sooner if i wish?

Yep you have the option of paying off your new N4 with no penalties. You will not regret your decision. If you are into rooting and modding your phone Dynamic Kat & Fire Kat are great Roms to check out. Welcome aboard and feel free to PM me if you need more help. Cheers and Happy Holidays!

These guys all hit it spot on... I might even go as far as to say try the test drive program. Yes yes its an iPhone, butttttt, its a no strings attached way to test coverage for seven days.
Moral of the story:
You want to be sure of your coverage over everything. If coverage is good where you live/commute/reside/work/whatever, then you probably won't have a better experience than with T-Mobile. And the network/coverage/plans/deals just keep getting better and better, with no signs of slowing down.
i'm on t-mobile...
couple of questions, i have wanam ,but i don't see the option to change the mapping of our recents\back button ( want the recents to be menu and long back button to be recents)
oh also, is there a dropbox offer for T-Mo note 4 buyers?
also when wifi calling is enabled, sms fails immediately in hangouts when trying to send (can receive though)
turn off wifi calling and boom it works. any ideas?
narrowed down sms via wifi issue (kernel related)
So does anyone know about dropbox offers? and swapping recents for menu? thanks.
Remap recents button to menu
I use the Xposed Additions module found in Xposed to remap the Recents button.

So having a peculiar situation , with text over wifi calling,
I got my phone with NJ7 , didn't know any better and flashed a NK4 rom, and while at work wifi texts weren't going through, so i went home flashed full firmware tested at home wifi seemed to work just fine, came back to work today, while wifi calling is on it doesn't work immediately gives me message failed msg using hangouts, but with wifi calling on work wifi using stock sms app works fine, what could it be??
Why would hangouts work over wifi calling on home network on hangouts but not on work wifi on hangouts?

TMobile Tether Question

I'm using Verizon now for home internet via a tablet with hot spot turned on. I moved to a rural area and no broadband is available. I don't want satellite because I can not game with it so I am stuck using Verizon. As you all know you have to pay per GB and its quite expensive. I need an alternative for internet and no carrier with unlimited data will allow you to tether. It looks like TMobile will be my best bet carrier wise and I know you can get around it so TMobile doesn't see that you are tethering.
Here is my question, I have searched for a few hours and looking at my options. I've found numerous places that tell you how to do it, but none of them have been updated for months. When you read the FoxFi comments everyone's claiming it doesn't work after the Lollipop update. Even found a few threads on here with recent comments, but no answer. I want to get a phone from TMobile just to tether the unlimited data. 5 GBs isn't enough for what I need. So can anyone confirm a method or point me in the directions of a thread that can tell me what is working currently? I don't want to start service with TMobile and it not work.
Thanks for anyone that can help.

I am rooted. You must be referring to wifi tether app or something. I'm on a custom rom. Most (if not all) the tethering mods require root access. Maybe someone else can chime in on tether without root.
Ok this is a start lol. Looking at the Tmobile prices I don't think Note 4 would be a smart move for what I will use it for. Would the same methods work with an S3? you may not know worth a shot azking.

I've had s3, note 2, and now note 4 for my last 3 phones, all on the tmobile network. S3 is great and has a a lot of past development still available. Honestly though I'd go with something like the note 2 or 3 or s4. Those have better more recent development and can do the same things if not more. Good luck in your search
Thanks for the help bud I'll look into it more after the 7 day test drive.

Galaxy S5 Root Bounty...?

Has this been started for the ATT version of the S5? If not I'll start it.
I want to root mine too. No luck yet.

There is a pre-lollipop root available. However, there is not one for anyone who has taken the lollipop OTA or got the S5 with it already installed. I am not sure if anyone is even working on it since this phone is almost 2 years old now.
I sold mine and got a unlocked tmobile s5 rooted it on 5.1.1 with no problem. I can use my at&t sim in it and with a few APN adjustments. My son still has the at&t s5 and it automatically took the 5.1.1 update. We still want to root it as soon as possible. Im sure sooner or later it will be a way to unlock the bootloader and root. Maybe at&t will soon unlock because I heard Verizon did

yeah I'm in the same boat my S4 that was rooted decided to not see the SIM anymore and I had warranty on it so when I called to get the replacement they didn't have any S4's left so they sent me a S5 ***BUT** the S5 came with 5.1.1 on it and now I'm f00ked......no more tethering with my grandfathered unlimited data plan I dun use it that way much MAYBE 5-6 times a year when we go camping and have no interweb access and I can't see paying $60/mo to use it tethered that infrequent.
If they wouldn't b1tch I'd throw my sim card in my laptop Wi-Mo card and use that for internet.

Fully functional TWRP should be available for the Note 7 Qualcomm tomorrow or the 20th, depending on when Samsung uploads the N930W8 kernel source. (only thing I'm waiting on)
If you have an N930T, you can try flashing https://idlekernel.com/twrp/a2017/twrp-3.0.2-0-b10-ailsa_ii.tar.md5 which is for the Axon 7 but only to see if it accepts the flash. If Odin succeeds to flash it, then it's quite likely that it is indeed unlocked. (you'll know for sure that you're unlocked if it says Set Warranty Bit when trying to boot recovery IMMEDIATELY AFTER FLASHING!!!!!!!)
If Odin says FLASH FAIL, then it is bootloader locked and John Legere Kenobi is your only (clearly unreliable) hope.
You can then boot up your system and it will reflash stock recovery and you'd be back to normal.
If it is locked, trying this will not trip knox warranty bit.

Did not work.
Sad day...?
did you unlock the oem bootloader, there is an option in the settings under developer settings may have to click that on before you can attempt to flash anything.

The new "T-Mobile One" Unlimited Plan starting Sept 6th is really a bad deal. First off it is $70 per month before the other stuff. $25 to get the "Bing On" turned off and be able to enjoy true HD video on their network. You only get unlimited 2G speeds of tethering with the $70 plan. You will only be able to purchase 5gb of 4G/LTE tethering per month for $15 per month. $70+$25+$15=$110 You add insurance and you are at $120 per month before tax/fees.
No more 14gb of 4G/LTE tethering per month. Pay more just to get HD videos and only getting 5gb of 4G/LTE tethering. Or get throttled to SD videos and 2G tethering. That is the new plan.
You would be better off getting the plan now before the changes.
Just saying.

Tether on grandfathered AT&T unlimited

I'm on an old grandfathered AT&T unlimited data plan and I can tether using my current jailbroken iPhone but it's starting to die and I'm looking at the Note 8 as a replacement. I see a lot of info about the Verizon plans, but can anyone confirm that if I buy an unlocked Note 8 from Samsung that I'll still be able to tether on AT&T? I gather that pdanet/foxfi no longer works so I also wonder if there's a way to hide the tether usage, and/or if AT&T even still cares about this.
Thanks!

Not trying to get off Subject but I was facing the same thing when I was about to buy my S8+. I had the grandfathered plan (in some form) since my old Palm Treo 650 and hated the thought of losing it. Then ATT came out with a new unlimited plan that has a 10gb/month hotspot for each phone, free texting & calling in US, Canada, Mexico. So I asked my family if they wanted to all be on the same plan so we share the $100. Access fee and the rest is cheaper too. The whole plan is cheaper for me than it was with the "limited" grandfathered in plan (every year ATT had been raising the price of the grandfathered unltd but what could we do? Nothing!). Plus I have DirecTV & get a $25. monthly credit and $17.99 monthly credit for HBO. I think streaming DirecTV on their app is totally not going against data usage (which can slow after 22GB). This is what finally made me give up the old plan.
I could not find any reliable way to otherwise tether. I never did root though. Now I have the N8 and I use the hotspot all of the time but not enough to reach 10gb/month. I do not work for ATT! Lol.

If you root it follow this thread. It will work. I bought a Verizon note 8 then switch to att sim. You will experience a little bug with phone calling. It will not place the country code leaving you with a number instead of contact name and volte and wifi calling will not work. You have to switch carriers on the phone using this method to fix everything:

Thanks, I'm new here so bear with me.
I thought that since Verizon and AT&T use different networks, the phones were not interchangeable.
Is there a benefit to buying an unlocked Verizon phone as opposed to an unlocked AT&T phone?
Is rooting necessary? A number of people on here claim that using a factory unlocked phone allows them to tether W/O any modifications. Just trying to verify before I shell out $1k.

you can tether with anyones plan; if you are crazy and use 100's of gigs, then you should pay your way instead of stealing bandwidth from those of us that pay for what we use
