[Q] Extremely slow speeds in Play Store on wifi - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this issue before so I don't think it's ROM specific, but I'm using aosip v3.3 and Franco kernel r42 and did a clean flash. What happens is in Google Play store my WiFi speeds are really slow, around 100kbps. LTE works fine and download speeds are as expected. My speed test results on wifi are always around 30mbps+ and no other applications are slow. So far I've tried clearing the cache and data. I also updated to the latest version 6.1.12 via GroovyAPKs but same issue. Any ideas on why the Play Store is slow on WiFi when the WiFi speed is good otherwise?

How are you measuring WiFi speed in the Play store? I have noticed that some Play store upgrades take an extremely long time on my 90+ Mbps home WiFi, but I attributed it to congestion on the store side.

On previous ROMs when something was downloading from the Play Store, when I expanded my status bar it would show the download speed in kbps, which was around 100kbps. On aosip it doesn't do this, but the way I can tell is by downloading a small application. Like LTE Discovery for example is a 3.78mb app. When I was on WiFi it was downloading really slow and only got to 20% after probably 15 - 20 seconds. When I canceled the download and restarted it on LTE the app downloaded almost instantly. And again, it's not the WiFi because speedtests are consistently high. Just annoying to have to toggle WiFi just to download from the Play Store.

Hmm, that makes me wonder if Google is throttling WiFi downloads from the Play store on purpose. Hopefully others will chime in with the same issue to confirm.

Well I just got home and updated a few apps on the play store thru WiFi... The problem went away on its own. 15mb downloaded completed in about 2 seconds rather than the normal slow speeds. Don't know what fixed it but it seems good now

Keep an eye on your updates and new downloads if you don't mind. All of my new installations download and install very fast. However, I have seen supposedly 40MB downloads go from downloading to installing in just a couple seconds, but the progress bar barely moves. I think those are only patching the app and not downloading the whole thing. Other updates of only a couple MBs seem to take forever because the whole app is being downloaded, and very slowly at that.

What speeds are you getting with T-Mobile and 2G

I am a T-Mobile user and I understand that the International version is limited to 2G versions. Since I mostly use wifi for data, that is not a deal breaker and the reports are that T-mobile is ramping up use of the 1900MHZ band (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398742,00.asp). But I am curious what performance you are getting on 2G. I remember that an older Blackberry used some tricks to get fairly decent performance on 2G. Just wondering.
I have been using my note on 2g for a few weeks now, and I have been pleasantly surprised with its performance. The speeds are very slow, but that is pretty much expected. I was able to hop onto the market and download speedtest with hardly any loading times besides the actual app download. To me, the speeds are very bearable and I will patiently wait and hope that someone gets 3g working. I use Wifi mostly anyway so it isn't that big of a deal.
At my job, I just got a whopping 193kbps download speed. Around my house, I can probably get double that since the speeds here always suck. Good thing I have wifi 90% of the time anyway!
Thanks. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I rarely browse extensively on the go, but I do need to get email and check an occasional page. Most of the time I have WiFi available. Videos, etc. are never on the agenda.
A test at my house was actually worse than my previous test, but it varies. Sometimes it will be a little faster.
The testmy.net show it gets up to 250kbps, but I would guess 10 to 25KBs is realistic, 30kbps+ if lucky.
I can browse with it, the load time is quick enough, as long as its two or three tabs and not opening a bunch at once. Especially using AdFree to block ads helps. Google Maps/Navigaition are usable as it manages to load new tiles.
Downloading apps takes a long time and usually will have to let it runs in the background. YouTube is out of the question except for lower quality and waiting for it to buffer.
I would say it is acceptable as long as you have WiFi access at places that you go.

Extremely long Wi-Fi access times

My WiFi has issues opening new connections, like checking my email can take anything from a normal 1 second to just sit there and spin for 30 seconds.
This gets worse if I ask the email client to check all three accounts at the same time.
Opening say facebook through a bookmark on the start screen, can either load instantly, or just show a white screen until I force close Chrome and retry.
I never get an actual timeout error, but it'll keep loading some items between 10 seconds, to just never connecting.
When I do a speed check, there's no issue, I get the same 12 Mbps as the wired computer, assuming it'll actually start downloading.
On the play store there's broken downloads though, it'll download at max speed instantly, but then hang in the middle until I force stop the play store (or reboot).
If I let it sit long enough, it might resume but often with corrupt downloads as a result.
I've had this problem for a while now, and I've tried connecting to various other networks with completely different configurations and it's pretty much consistent.
Disabling WiFi and using the LTE network instead, it doesn't display this behaviour at all, so it has to be something with the WiFi.
Has anyone else had this? I can't find anything useful through the search or google, they all suggest I do this and that on my router, but the other devices work fine.
Tested with the HTC M7, an old Motorola Razr, even the now ancient Moto XT720 has no issues.
If you are in the stock Lollipop 5.0, then you should check your logcat (or use CatLog app in PlayStore if you are rooted).
There are many many WifiStateMachine errors that are logged each second.... I made a thread about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/xt1095-pure-edition-stock-5-0-major-t3002124
I reverted back to 4.4.4 and had no more of those errors.

I checked your thread, and I had a bug like that on 4.4.4 actually.
Where it would work fine, go to sleep then not wake up again.
For me, it was a game from humble bundle that triggered this, "The Deer God"
There was another game on play that did the same, but I can't remember the name of that one.
After I emailed the devs of Deer God, they oddly found the bug immediately and their new version didn't have this problem.
I didn't even send them a log file or anything.. Which was weird.
So far this never happened after upgrading to Lollipop though.
My WiFi problems disappeared at work, but remained at home.
Thinking it was the router, I borrowed a WiFi repeater but the problem still occurred.
Even when I used the repeater as a hotspot with cable.
I was about to give up, and just use my 4G all the time..
But I installed DD-WRT, and lo and behold, WiFi works flawlessly?!
It's not like I'm using a cheap rubbish router, it's the Netgear Nighthawk for crying out loud..
You'd think the software for it would be well coded considering how long they've been doing these devices...

Slow data over wifi

So guys, I've just bought a nexus 6 last week, and I'm experiencing some strange issues with the WiFi.
Loading content is really slow, things like loading app list on google play, new videos from my subscriptions on YouTube or even a search on google using chrome can take minutes (not exaggerating here, on stopwatch to load the information and pictures of an app on play store the phone took more than 2 minutes).
And some notifications they don't come right away, (new emails, WhatsApp,etc...)
Although the internet where I live now is not the best and the modem/router is a single channel fritzbox, it's fast enough for a simple WhatsApp message to come through.
What I ruled out is:
Provider blocking ports used by google services < contacted the support and no ports are blocked, and things work fine with my mate 7 running kit Kat
Provider slowing down access to google < nope, it's illegal here and again my mate 7 works fine
Interference by other WiFi networks < I'm in a WiFi crowded place now, but my router is the only one on channel 13, tried other channels and no luck either, and again all other WiFi devices work fine here.
My nexus 9 shows the same symptom but not always.. So I assume it's a lollipop thing... Someome has some tips of things that I should try? Thanks a lot

Have you run a speedtest by chance?

Yes, and some times it never finishes it when trying the upload test, download speed is okay with 9Mbps but upload test stays in 0... Ping is not consistent between 23ms up to 83...
Will post a screenshot with a new test as soon as my PC is finished downloading updates .

Could you try running a speedtest on the nexus 6 and the. On the mate 7? This will help narrow things down a bit.
I'd say it's most likely a router issue. On my 100 Mbit/s broadband I just clocked 111 Mbit/s over Wi-Fi. In other words, the N6 is more than capable...

Google play music and apps issues after 6.0 update

Updated my tmo to 6.0. Flashed twrp and rooted. google play store runs incredibly slow and Google play music constantly buffers. My data speed is fast over 40mb on lte. Any thoughts?
Give it a little while. Stuff like this is slow after an initial upgrade. Mine was the same for about 45 minutes and then cleared up.

App in play store stop downloading after sometimes with mobile data?

Because my mobile data is much faster than my WiFi but there's a problem on my 1908.12 tencent edition.
At first I thought it's because I didn't turn off data limit warning, so I turn it off but it still the same.
I tried download big app (Asphalt 9) and it's about 1.8GB-1.9GB. The other apps which are smaller than 100MB has no problem so far.
The symptom is after around 20%-30% the download bar in notification will disappear and in Play store, the percentage will stuck there. I noticed my 4G+ up and down have no movement since then.
What I've tried so far
-Turn off data limit warning
-Clear cache and data on Play store (app manager)
-Restart
There's a possibility that my phone is not in a great working condition because it's still under cn fingerprint but global rom.
Did anyone has this issue? I'll try WiFi tonight and will update this again.
Honestly I have no ideas but some people complaining their network disappearing and reappearing sometimes and disrupting their operations.
Maybe you get a temporary network flap and the download/update refuses to continue.
Try with only Wi-Fi and see if there's any difference.

Updated. I just tried with Wi-Fi awhile ago, it's the same but stuck on 40%. I have 90GB free space.
Thanks for your respond.

Then problem is most likely not from your network but memory.
Try downloading offline apk and installing directly.
Also, since gms was probably installed later, check all Google services and ensure all necessary permissions are allowed
