tap to wake ? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there something similar to tap to wake ?

I use gravity screen, works well enough.

True tap to wake requires hardware that supports it. The Fire does not seem to support it.

Note, gravity screen does not support any kind of tap to wake, nor the absent proximity sensor in the fire. It just uses the accelerometer to detect a change in orientation to wake the screen. I haven't really tested battery life before the app, so I can't really say how much it drains. Just that it works beautifully, I pick up the tab and the screen wakes, no need to hit the power button.
Now if there was only some way to disable the lock screen altogether...

my lock screen is disabled i am on cm12.
I will try gravity screen , thanks

Gravity Screen is a godsend. Battery drain in minimal with proximity sensors, might be more triggering off accelerometer. Actually improved battery performance on my mobile as it also blanks the screen when pocketing the phone. I rarely use the physical power button now except to reboot.

Can't reach the Power button - any other way to wake screen?

Loving my HTC One, but I have such small hands that I can hardly reach the Power button to wake it up after it goes to sleep!
Does anyone know of an app where I can use the Volume button instead?
Thanks in advance.
Only way to possibly assign the sleep/wake function to the volume buttons would mean having to be rooted. I don't know if anyone's made that change yet though, it might just require editing a single file. Don't have any experience with This myself so not 100%. Just know it requires root.

After a quick search online I've discovered Auto Screen On in the Play Store, which lets me double tap the proximity sensor (left of top speaker) to wake it up.
Works perfectly but an app using the Volume button would be much better.
With this app your screen has to be awake all the time and will drain your battery i think.
On TrickDroid v2.0.0 u can choose VolWake in Aroma

Moved your thread to the proper section for you. Please remember to post only in the correct sections. Thanks.
I've heard of some app for a nexus 4 that allows you to just swipe the screen and it turns on. Not sure what it was called, but you get the concept.
Good job I have big hands really because this nor generally using the phone is an issue due to its size.

I'm assuming sweep2wake or swipe2wake will eventually be implemented. It's basically swiping left to right on the capacitive buttons to wake the phone.
The One X had it, but it was a bit buggy when I used it in terms of it not working if the phone was asleep for a long time. I got rid of my One X a while ago though so idk how the feature works now and if they figured it all out., but I expect it to get implemented on the HTC One eventually.
The proximity sensor isn't a bad idea, jailbroken iPhone 5 etc...have the always on proximity where if you cover the proximity it'll turn the screen off and eventually lock the phone after a while. So you can put it in your pocket and it will turn the display off, bring it out of pocket and it comes on without needing to slide to unlock or anything. It's good if your messaging constantly.

iirc showp1984 said he's getting a htc one, and see oz did too so hopefully one of them will bring sweep to wake Zarboz did an excellent job on the incredible s and he doesn't even have the device
Sweep to wake generally doesn't work sometimes in deep sleep. I use vol wake and the. Sweep to go to sleep on my incredible s now s2w is actually the greatest thing ever

Proximity can't turn off screen when covered

I installed a couple of apps for this, like Smart cover https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=smart.cover, and Proximity Smart Cover https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danielling.proximitysmartcover . Basically I want when the proximity is covered (case closed), the screen goes off, and then goes on when it's uncovered. These 2 apps can do the 'wake' part alright (wake screen when the proximity is no longer covered) but they can't seem to turn off the screen when it's covered. I granted both admin permission. Here are some clues:
_ My proximity sensor is working alright (checked through hidden menu, and it does turn off the screen when proximity covered in-call)
_ Tap tap app can work (touch/wave 2x to lock, same to wake)
So any idea why those 2 app can't work? Thanks in advance.
I use Smart Screen on my Note II with the following settings:
Basic - everything blank (no ticks in the boxes}
Prox - Blank
Sensor - Blank
Start/Stop - Disable in landscape
This works for me and I have not noticed any battery drainage problems.
Please note: I have stock 4.1.2 and no lock screen enabled (my phone never leaves my sider.
This is not my ideal setup as the screen will immediately sleep if i hapren to accidently go to close. I need to pull down the notification menu at the far left or right of the screen. I have tried to play with the delayed reaction settingsand have had contact with the developer about the situation.
I am however happiest that as soon as i open my wallet case the phone is ready for use.
Quick and easy with one hand

Tried calibrating both in hidden menu and in app, but still there. But using another app, Smart screen off pro, fixed it. Guess it has to be with a different mechanism.
not proximity sensor
I have had the same problem on my 4X but the problem isn't the proximity sensor. I have tried various other apps including orientation and brightness locks. These haven't worked either, I have tried to change lock screen settings and screen time out but these haven't worked. Does anyone have any other suggestions or solutions to this problem?
I use "smart screen off pro" with no problems, all is working as expected....

OK, I dont use a lock screen, never tested if its working...
My settings (checked):
Basic:
- Start on Boot
- Hide notification messages
Start/Stop
- Disable when in Landscape
- Enable only when in Launcher (not necessary, if u want it allways to turn screen off leave unchecked, I want Screen on in Apps, so I checked it)
Vibration:
- Vibrate when screen turned off
Thats all...

Can't turn off double tap to wake?

I've tried a couple of ROMs with double tap to wake. I honestly love the feature, but I've had too many issues with wake locks in my pocket, so I've decided it's not worth it and I'll turn it off. The problem is, it doesn't actually turn off. I'll hit that off switch, tap my screen a few times, and it's awake again. This is frustrating because then it wakes up in my pocket still. Is there any way to permanently remove it from the ROM? Maybe something I can flash or something I can change to completely disable this feature?
Grab /system/lib/hw/power.shamu.so from a pre-rooted (untouched) stock rom or a rom that hasn't enabled it

FWIW, Exodus and I'm sure some other ROMs, have a setting to prevent pocket wake ups by using the proximity sensor.

Are you sure it's not ambient display waking your phone?
Eh... "ambient display" doesn't wake your phone. Ambient display just shows WHEN your phone is awoken by... tap to wake, shake to wake, incoming notification.
OP: Some people confuse tap to wake and shake to wake. Nexus 6 implements shake to wake by default. Problem is that tapping on the screen can.... shake the phone.
This generally should NOT be going off in your pocket. Either, that is. Reason is that it is *supposed* to use the state of the proximity sensor as a CONDITION on whether or not it should start up ambient display. The proximity sensor will read as "near" when the phone is in your pocket, thus prevent tap or shake to wake from triggering ambient display.
So sounds like you probably tried a couple of different sysimages that both contain a bug that stops it from taking the proximity sensor into account. My guess would be something that is based on cyanogenmod (aka "the buggiest android ever conceived"). Try stock and see if the problem goes away.
Personally, I prefer to use a custom ROM with native LED control and disable ambient display.

If you haven't got a modified Nexus 6 with this problem, then this isn't relevant to you.

Wake up device by touching screen?

Hi,
I have a tablet which doesn't support double tap 2 wake. But I want to easily wake up the device when it is chargin.
Is there any Xposed module which let's the digitizer be always on when chargin and react when touched and wake up the device/screen?
Thank you!

As far as dt2w is concerned I haven't seen any modules that do that. A custom kernel with that feature, if available, might be the only way.
There are any number of ways to keep the screen on while charging, though. Stay Awake in developer options, caffeine (app or in some ROMs), screen saver / daydream settings, etc.
Do a web search for "keep screen on while charging" and you'll find all kinds of info.

In Developer Options, there is an option to prevent the screen from sleeping while charging.
ie your screen will never sleep & all your contents will be visible.

Any way to switch from tap to wake to double tap to wake ?

Hi there,
Tap to wake is a neat feature but I find myself waking up my phone too often by mistake, so I tried to figure out a way to get the old double tap to wake back, but couldn't find out how.
I guess it must be implemented into custom kernel ?
Any advice would be appreciated !
Same, I had to turn this off b/c my phone kept waking in my pocket and changing songs.
I noticed too sometimes my phone wakes up in y pocket, coming from OnePlus it surprised me cause I'm used to have pocket mode. Hope there will be a workaround later.
I replaced the Pixel Launcher with Nova Launcher. Light years better. While there is no double tap to wake, you can double tap to lock the screen then just use the fingerprint reader to unlock the screen. Since owning the OG Droid long ago it seems, I have yet to find a home launcher better than Nova. Worth every penny.
Double Tap - Apps on Google Play
Easy to turn on/off screen without power. Not affected to unlock by fingerprint
play.google.com
Works perfectly on Pie.
As for Q...? Give Google time and they will screw up anything and everything.
I use NovaLauncher too and all my devices for years now. I love it.
But that's not what me and OP are complaining about. We want to double-tap the screen while the phone is laying a table and have it wake up to lock screen. Picking it up and using the fingerprint sensor on back doesn't help.
Lift to Wake works, but you have too, duh, lift it to wake it. We want the double tap for our fingers, but not erroneous dbl tap detections when phone is moving around in pocket or in my hand.
I can't tell you how many times music player skipped forward or back b/c or incorrect dbl taps, waking, and then more taps from my pocket contents or whatever.
I'm using OnePlus launcher port as I'm used to it (and I love the gesture to access hidden apps from app drawer, asking for fingerprint).
And I'm happy with it, I use Gravity box so I can turn the screen with double tap on status bar.
For now I disabled tap to wake, and I use tasker to turn on always on when there's an incoming notification, so that I don't have to wake my screen just to check if there's something new.
I'm confident someone will give us a custom kernel allowing double tap to wake someday !
Seems like there's something wrong with proximity sensor, I noticed that after trying to play with proximity sensor in tasker, it always return 5cm.
Updating to February build did not solve the issue, that could be the reason why there's no pocket mode.
Anybody else with this problem ? (There are several apps that can read sensors and check for proximity one.)
Did anyone ever figure this out. I really like the double tap to wake so I just tap my phone while it sits on table to wake. I never had an issues w/tapping to wake before (LG v35, etc) and I now realize why it is a huge problem for myt 4A 5G -- stupid Google make it tap to wake, not double tap. For me, this cause constant waking and then irritating unwanted activity (music changing, podcasts stopping) while my phone is still in my pocket. Arrrrg.

If your phone wakes up in your pocket, you must have a problem with proximity sensor, i had to remove my screen protector because of that, and now, no more accidental wake up while in the pocket (but i still miss the double tap to wake).
