Looks like 5.1.1 Lollipop is coming! (at least to joying units) - MTCB Android Head Units General

Check it out!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDH5_AQlgmU
Looks like it will be here sometime in the next few weeks.
(I know it wont be a big change, but I think some people will be excited)

What newer features make it worth an exclamation point? Battery life - really? "Material design" - meh. Multiple SIM card support - huh? Fingerprint reader support? Android pay?
Maybe just a bigger number is better for bragging rights?

App compatibility...

example?

I've got nothing to prove mate, if you don't care then feel free to move along. Cheers.

Lollipop has better notification handling than KitKat, the ART runtime is tuned better (i.e. better performance), previous apps are restored after reboot, better power consumption, while not critical for head units less power consumption means less heat and better reliability.
While there are a bunch of apps that are available on KitKat and Lollipop, the Lollipop ones can have additional features.
Nothing ground breaking, I know I will appreciate the notification handling, being able to remove some persistent notifications for some apps and clean up that messy notification bar.

For me, the biggest thing is that it shows joying actually supports their products and isn't just another reseller.

The MAIN feature of Lollipop over KK is the fact that it has DIGITAL AUDIO natively through USB if your audio hardware supports it. I am most excited about that. Material design is the other reason, and the other reason is that RAM management and App memory management is better. Project Butter in Lollipop works very well in operating the interface at 60 fps and I am guessing these are reasons enough to be excited about Lollipop.

There's a link posted on the carjoying.com website to a beta 5.1.1 firmware for the RK3188 1024*600 units :
http://www.carjoying.com/Joying-blog/12.html
Here's the direct link to the firmware :

Has anyone tried this yet? Just tried to update but got the boot logo (manufacturer, not the bootloader logo), just sat there for like 30mins, restarted and it reverted to factory firmware on 4.4.

Hey Frank,
How did you install an external DAC to usb player pro? I have a FiiO x3K that I would like to hook up to the head unit and use as a DAC? Is there any way, you might have some insight as to how I can a achieve this? Would I have to use a microusb to usb or auxilary?
Thanks

Off topic a bit, but first go install the trial app and plug your Fiio into USB and test it out.

What do you think about it? Is this is a really revolution?
I think this phone looks very nice with a stunning UI. The technical specs are nothing special, but this could be quite a hit i think.
thats a savage ass phone, you kno what would be sick tho if you could change the color of all the LED's on it two from blue to like purple or something. It's linux it should be fully customizable like that
I love the look of this phone. Very appealing. I will be interested in seeing more about it.
This would be the perfect MP3 Player. But for a smartphone, I do not know if it will offer the extreme flexibility of any of the four TRUE smart phones: Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, Android.
Does this phone have a file system, etc? Also, does Palm Pre and Palm Pixi have a file system and file manager too?
But I've seen this phone before, and I was excited, and still am.
I just don't expect it to be smart-centric. I expect it to be more like a Zune HD experience with some "quasi-smart" features like on the iPhone.
Original Poster, I think you should compile links on the first post and make this the official ELSE anticipation and discussion thread.
More Links http://else.bz/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amk7XzgMcTs&feature=related
But there are a few things I would like to know more about this phone.
*Judging by the Flash Videos, the keyboard on the phone sucks (but there are some pretty cool features). But the reason why it sucks is mainly due to the layout and size of the keys both in portrait and qwerty.
*I haven't seen any file manager. Will it be on this phone, and how complex is it?
*Speaker quality?

He was talking about the buttons being on the right side of the phone. Easier for us left-handers to use. I don't think you can change hardware location in settings
Use it upside down maybe!! too bad for you!! Does look interesting, but not entirely better than tab bars and such.. it does have that added sliding left feature and I guess it being capacative would not require much tension from the thumb. I am always up for new technology to push the limits.

Wow, maybe the device will not only have rotate orientation buy also flip orientation. That would be awesome!

It's all going to come down to how they market this phone. It looks great and definitely has appeal to those of us with a technical background and who love customization. But what carrier will they market it to? Can it be customized to settings that people find interesting such as led colors, programs, etc? and the biggest one: WHO will they allow to carry the operating system. Getting google to back this would be great, getting Nokia to make a phone able to support this would be great, but which one will have the advertising budget to challenge Apple and the like to the duel that will occur when this and the next generation of iphones is released? A small company like Access is going to have a really hard time trying to compete with Motorola, Nokia, Google, Samsung and Apple especially.
I'm sorry for reviving a dead thread, but does anybody know the name of this phone and the maker? I think the phone failed to launch and the maker went out of business and that's making it hard for me to find any information on this. A name should help, thanks.
The Linux based smartphone have actually been out for awhile. I think (Don't hold me to word on this) there is one called tuxphone. But I'm not sure if that's Linux based when I think back on it...

bootdroid - Let's end it here shall we

When I was looking for x86 stuff today, I came across this "project" called bootdroid that is supposedly a guy coming along in his port of iOS to Android (blog of updates is here: http://bootdroid.blogspot.com/ code page here: http://code.google.com/p/bootdroid/).
It amazes me how people think that, with all the issues we have with hardware acceleration, audio, and camera drivers with every OS update that SWITCHING to a completely different system wouldn't be out of the question.
Yes, for people still questioning, it IS fake. You're NEVER going to be able to run iOS natively on an Android device period. Likewise, you can barely get Android to recognize the iOS hardware.
A few things to note:
1) He's spamming it all over the place for SEO reasons,
2) The iPhone's/iPads interface images are static. They don't just "fit" into any given screen size, a reason why we can't have DPI changers like Android has. You'd have to totally recode the system to do what he's trying to make you THINK he's doing. He says he's using the iPad version... Have you ever tried using iPad apps on the iPhone? Well, it shows you only 4/100th of the screen. Yes, I have tried, and so have a few others.
3) He used old web app sample code that comes with Xcode. It's not even iOS5:
iOS4:

}
iOS 5:
His:
Specifically, you can tell by the edges. His Push Notifications are also thick:
So move along now, nothing to see here.
Ga niet zomaar haten...
Seriously he is already been working on this project since ios 4 was still the latest and greatest. I don't know if you are an iPhone user or on the Android side but this is real. He has been providing very true ans interesting topics on his blogspot and I would like to see your face when an alpha build comes out.
People stop hating on this project please. Maybe this is fake but then again why would he been keeping the site alive for that long ? Do you think that someone that is wanting to say brick our devices is going to say don't promote this to much because the maker of thz port could be sued by Apple for the copyright things.
This is probably the last thing that Apple is waiting on, people using their (good and smooth with great exclusive apps) software on hardware that is better and faster and that fill better the needs of certain people. ( I don't like the iPhone's sound quality, display size, aspect ratio, glass that breaks rapidly...).
I have been an iPhone user since they came out. I also have Android devices. There are pros and cons with both.
I've managed to snag the GUI images that are available with the iOS 5 firmware and optimized it for the Android device I'm working with. I successfully built a Test App (GUI) in Xcode and added it as a system application to the iOS firmware currently running on my Android device.
Click to collapse
Again... That is NOT iOS5. I know how it looks like, and I know how Xcode looks and works.
Another thing, since iOS is basically OS X, what does this mean for driver support? There isn't a driver for any internal Android hardware that also works in OS X.
Lastly, just because it's better hardware doesn't mean the software will work better/faster on it. Being that Androids are mostly made out of plastic will most likely result in heating issues. The new iPad can hardly handle it.

Hunch
Well I noticed on the Bootdroid blog, that someone has released code for Bootdroid.
HTML:
https://github.com/Peter42/BootDroid
However, what we do not know is what the files actually do. I have tested it myself and... well... they do nothing that I can actually tell apart from run an app, which itself, does nothing? :S
However both the software and the app seems to be virus free, according to ESET and Lookout.
Is there any developers wishing to strip down these files, and have a little look inside to see what they do?
Thanks,
TyphoonScotland
The only big file there is U2WIN.exe which is 380MB. I won't download it and try it myself, so i don't know what that is or does.
But i find it strange that there's no videos of this. I would think that a lot of people would try this and post some videos on YouTube. But nope, no videos whatsoever.

Nexus 7 Specs are live on Asus website (9.5 hrs battery life shown)

The specification page for the Nexus 7 is live on the Asus website now.

Interestingly on that Asus page it shows the nexus 7 running in Tablet UI mode:

I'm thinking it could either be a bad photoshop from some other device or it could show that at some stage this thing was intended to run in full tablet mode rather than in some hybrid mode. Probably just a photoshop job though because the rest show it running the hybrid UI.

From the ASUS site:
"World’s first 7” quad-core tablet delivers an advanced multimedia experience with up to 9.5* hours of battery life".
*"Battery life may vary by use. Stated battery life measured by playing 720p video at 100 nits brightness, with an external microphone, Wi-Fi turned on, Gmail logged in".
Weird part about that note is the external microphone.
Would never have considered running with an external mike,
and that should have no effect on battery life anyway.

No, look at the panel at the bottom. It's using the tablet panel and not the "3 button" phone panel. Indicates tablet launcher.
The nexus 7 panel only shows 3 buttons (back, home, multi-task) even when running apps in tablet mode.
Furthermore in this picture there is no notification bar at the top, it is contained in the panel at the bottom like in the tablet UI.

You can look at the battery indicator(s) and see that this Nexus 7 is currently being charged by an external battery located in a keyboard. It's a screengrab from a Transformer most likely.

Yeah, those are just generic android specs and they forgot to remove that one. And I doubt the FFC can support 720P anyway.

I'd assume that any of these should work with the black irig HD as well:
https://www.google.com/search?site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&q=otg+adapter
At least they say so on the website for their iOS version of irig HD:
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irighd/index.php?pp=irig-hd-specs
"Compatible with any Android devices with USB (OTG) connector running Android 5 (coming soon). "
It seems like it wont be just for the Note 4 and Note Edge. I dont understand wall this publicity to Samasung when they clearly say in their website that every Android device with USB OTG and Android Lollipop will get it x)
sir ikmultimedia i dont know anything about amplitube but a friend is asking if the note 4 will be able to use the full screen of the controls (thats how he described it to me) like the one in his ipad. Thanks sir.

We also have more news on this front released today: We are definitely going to expand to other devices as more start to support Samsung Professional Audio but we also will be showing (and you can try it if you are there) near-zero latency Android audio for devices using Android 4.0 and above (so not even requiring Lollipop!). proper low/no latency audio sdk that developers could harness.
I play bass and have always been a fan of an app called Amplitube, (Ampeg) This is a real time guitar effects modeling software
that is pretty amazing. I have wished for years now that this would come to Android and everytime the developers have been contacted they have said that their hands are tied, Its not US its GOOGLE.. We do not have the proper featureset to work with in terms of low latency audio.
Well it seems that the wait is finally over, Perhaps Samsung finally got tired of Google dragging their feet for how long now to provide a real low/no latency audio solution..
I just found out about this by checking out the "Galaxy Gifts" page to see what goodies Samsung was giving along with the Note 4 purchase by noticing they are giving away a free copy of Amplitube le,.. I thought this was really strange. giving away a ios/windows app?
Then I saw this and really started to get excited.

This is great news, A real Low-no latency DAW with the freedom of Android I hope this is the kick in the ass Android needed for proper music production.
Im a drummer in a band my bass player uses an ampeg app on his ipad im defintly gonna let him know about this little goodie?
Great news but where is the amplitube app ? Cant find it on the appstore
Do you know if the standard Irig HD will work with it ?
Thanks !
Edit : ok, it's in the galaxy appstore and seems to be compatible with the normal Irig. Will give it a try tonight. Hope it will also come to the note pro tablet as it would be optimal with the 12.2 inches screen
I'm pretty sure low latency audio is part of Android L from what I understood from a panel at Google i/o this year. Maybe google shared the code with them early.

Amplitube le is on the galaxy store part of the free gifts,
another member has mentioned that IK is releasing a "irig HD-A" (for Android) in November which probably is
usb 2.0.
I can't find the app too bad used to use an irig on iPhone when I owned one
^ You can't find the app in note 4?
The app is in the samsung app store. I used the irig on my ipad so I'll give this a shot when I get back home. Wish they gave us all the amps tho lol. Thanks for the info!
Got the app but can't try it, irig doesn't come with micro usb cable =(
Ok, back to report the app and irig works great with my strat. Took a picture of what you need. This is great!
irig + 1/4" jack cable + headphones of your choice.

Awesome stuff - just downloaded. Great to see Android finally catching up with iOS on the music-making front.
We are definitely going to expand to other devices as more start to support Samsung Professional Audio but we also will be showing (and you can try it if you are there) near-zero latency Android audio for devices using Android 4.0 and above (so not even requiring Lollipop!). We announced this today on our site. I would post a link but I need more posts first
