Redmi 2 Official Kernel Sources Released! - Xiaomi Redmi 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

It's been about a year since this phone was released, and Xiaomi has finally released the kernel source for our beloved little device (HM2LTE), although only for Kitkat.
They can be found here https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource/tree/thomas-kk-oss?files=1. The code for the Redmi2 is "thomas".
Hope this will spark some new ROM developments and our forum can become a bit more 'official' .

Good news. But there is no camera driver. We won't be able to enjoy MIUI-like camera quality even in future custom ROMs.

Nice. Hope it is benefit for uncle kumajaya.

Yeah, i would like to see cm13 for hm2014811 with Numonyx Micron memory issues fixed

Good news man

Cool but..
WoW nice news, just one year...
But, if anyone can help me, i have some questions:
¿What this really means?
I mean, what improves will be in the actual ROM´s and...
¿How much time?
The developers have to start again to make new ROM´s with this kernel or is so simple like adding "something" to the already ROM´s created.
Ty and sorry about my english.

Hallo peeps!

Hi to everyone outhere. Just pulled out my 4x of the shipping box, thought i'd do a little introduction (hoping it won't disappoint anyone)
My name is Rudjgaard, 27 years old Italian...compiler (developer sounds too much for my level )
I come from the sony xperia's where i worked on miui v2 & 4 and currently maintain the ParanoidAndroid thread for sony mdpi line.
I'm unlocking bl now, then will dump system rom to give it a look (though i don't expect major differences) and hopefully by the end of the week will start working for the community.
I like working in tandem with other devs, i also offer my computer for remote compiling/programming if anyone needs decent specs.
Feel free to pm me anytime for anything regarding possible projects to personal help i'll do my best to help out.
I believe this should suffice for now, looking forward to this new part of community,
Best regards,
Rudj

Well....it's my daily and only rom, i bought new phone when halo source was released so.....who knows....maybe....

Android L

Hello developers.Dont want to be annyoing but I'm new to this devicee and i kinda like it and tried lots and lots of roms for it, and you know that android L/Lollipop is coming soon out, and i want to ask if anyone is gonna like port it to our device because i know some really good developers like the major tonyp and other ones.So if yes i would be really really hyped for it like many other lol
i think that for the reply we have to wait CM12(?)sources comes out,but as i understood in the past our phone is supporting kitkat with a base that starts from ics sources,so we must wait and maybe isn't possible to port, but also for me it will be interesting if the devs can port a rom with lollipop.By the way i was thinking that we are running also some old version of the gapps to make it work with our device due to missing neon support(like youtube or google search for ex.),so don't know if it's possible

We had to wait 3 months for CM11 M1 to come out after KitKat was released, and knowing that Lollipop is quite a large overhaul and that it fully uses the ART runtime, we can expect a larger delay for CM12 M1. And even when it comes out, it will be almost featureless. As far as I know, Lollipop sources haven't been yet released, so we'll have to wait and see.
Second, yes, we are running on old ICS sources, so unless the 3.x kernel becomes super stable so we can use newer drivers, if they are available for our device, we'll have a bad time.
Third, this is a subforum for Development Discussion, so this kind of thread is more welcomed in the General Discussion section or even Q&A.
Keep on modding Other than that, KitKat development has been quite amazing in the last few months, and considering that the O2X is a device released in 2011, we are more than been blessed regarding this device. Ludnica, brate, ludnica.
Jes jes hahaha. Well whatever happens we will maybe be able to get something of it.I will try my best.I dont rly know much about coding but i know some stuff and i am learning every day more and more so yeah.I hope if we all combine our inteligence we will get something.
Oh and the sources should be out on i think November 5th
Testing Platform available
I like the idea of L for P990. I recently bought a new phone. That spares my P990 for testing full time as I have another phone for regular use. Please let me should you like to test anything, I will happily share the results. The least I can do to aid further development.

[Question] Xperia Z1 Nougat?

I know it's a bit early to be asking about this since it's only just started rolling out but I'm curious if you guys think we'll see Nougat ROM's for our mighty Xperia Z1's in the future?
I know there isn't a decent Marshmellow ROM with good Camera Blops and that is one of the main reasons why I've stuck with lollipop ROM's.
It would be amazing to get to see Nougat ROM's but I don't want to get my hopes up too much.
So yeah, do you guys think Nougat ROM's will be possible? It will be nice to see your own opinion
I think that's highly possible. You can see a lot of changes for nougat at sonyxperiadev git, even for Rhine - board for our Xperia z1.
It depends on Sony whether they will release blobs for nougat.
But you can be 100% sure that we won't get nougat stock rom.

It kinda sucks that Sony doesn't support the Z1 anymore. The hardware is more than powerful to handle any Android OS. If anything, the newer versions maximises the power much more and there's more often than not an preformance boost.
Here's to hoping they decide to be nice and release the blops so one of the many many talented developers can throw together an amazing Xperiance for us guys not wanting to move on

That right there is exactly why it'll never happen.
Why guys do you want a nougat rom when marshmalow roms aren't usable as daily driver? We are waiting for MM blobs with camera improvements(that will probably never really come) for the moment so don't expect too much, you have time... And it is understandale that sony stops updating our device, they have a lot of younger devices and our is pretty old now.

Well... Not officially at least.
Besides the fact that Sony wont even release Nougat to their Z3 flagship lineup, the biggest issue is the fact that Qualcomm won't provide graphical driver updates that allow the Snapdragon 800/801 to support the Vulkan Graphics API. Since support for the Vulkan Graphics API is required for a device to pass Google’s Compatibility Test Suite (CTS), any device with a Snapdragon 800/801 will not receive official support for Android Nougat.

Custom ROM may be possible, but due to the heavy restrictions with the Z1 and the proprietary blobs it has with HAL, bootloader, etc. developers aren't motivated to port Nougat to the Z1. Also, many things are still broken in Marshmallow, so the chances that you'll get a stable Nougat running on your Z1 is pretty slim.
huh, it seems like Nougat is possible even with MM blobs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyV4pRnUOtw (thanks to alviteri btw)
all sources are there: https://github.com/SonyAosp (I'll try to build the rom probably next week )

Seems awesome sir !!!. We are waiting :victory:
I can't wait for a Nougat rom on Z1. But apparently Google is trying to ship N only to phones that meet its new encryption requirement, so there will be compatibility issues, i think.

Thank you

Mi5 - not too popular?

I owned mi3, redmi note 3 pro..both phones seems quite popular in xda in term of custom kernel, custom roms and even official CM. Was tempted to buy mi5, but it seems in xda, custom kernel, roms is quite less than other phones?

That's because other phones have either had their kernel source published on handset release or, as is the case with other Xiaomi phones, have had their kernel source available for some time. Mi5 kernel source was only released a month ago.
If you check the ROM/kernel development section you'll see that it is fairly active, and will only become more active now the Mi5 is dropping in price and CM13 has reached official nightlies. More CM13 based ROMs will appear, as will kernels implementing 32GB model overclocking and other improvements.
For value for money (new) 5" handsets that have quality active community support I can't see any other phone on the market right now competing with the Mi5. I have already bought two and would buy another one in a heartbeat.
xiaomi as usual, late in kernel release, i thought they improved since mi3 era, lol..
Man, for the price of the Mi5 and the specs it has... i don't think it's too late.
Obviously there's more smartphones coming out but I think if we keep on supporting and donating to the devs, I'd say that in no time (maybe a month) we will have several ROMs and custom kernels for our device. There's no need to worry (I guess). Actually I don't like MIUI much, but right now (today) is the best ROM for daily usage. I will switch to CM when I think it's the best time to. But, I've actually donated and done my help to those who are developing it. Done my part, and hopefully will have a great ROM in no time.
Yes, Xiaomi isn't a great "dev friendly brand" but the actual released kernel is a start. I think MIUI will upgrade to Nougat in the near months, and if the sources come out, it's surely great news for us. Just keep on waiting and take advantage of the great device Mi5 is.
I gave up on the mi5, lack of effort from Xiaomi makes the device pretty poor device.
Ordered an One plus 3t, when i get it i will sell my Mi5, it will be my last Xiaomi device ever.
Mi5 not really popular . But it good phone with cheap price and good spec . I dont even care about Xiaomi not making this phone really good . As long as i can use CyanogenMod even it official or unofficial .
The problem is not the developers at xda, but without proper sources from xiaomi there will not be bugfree CM or any other roms.

[ROM] [Work in Progress] [Mantis] LineageOS 14.1 for Fire TV Stick 4K

Hi community!
There is a WIP (Work in Progress) ROM being mainly developed by @Rortiz2 and @diegocr: https://github.com/LOSMantis
Current ROM Status:
- Not Stable
Not Working:
- Sound
- OMX
- Maybe more...
Developers out there that would like to join development are welcome!...
Notice: This is a WIP ROM. It needs to be compile from the source (build steps could be adapted from the Nexus Player https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/fugu/build) if someone wants to try it out. Ready to flash builds would maybe be available when the ROM is more stable. Please do not ask for ETA, it is being developed in the spare time of the developers!

Yes, but full of bloatware, with some blocking mechanisms or black listed apps, no Google Play Store...
We are not allowed to change the home app easily, to use the standard Android settings without Amazon home app, not install already purchased apps on the Google Play Store and so on...
With root you can disable remove the "bloatware", although personally i dont think there is much i dont use. The fireOS TV is fairly smooth and easy to navigate. The android TV version is worse (IMO, I have a NVidea). You can disable the NIMH app, although i have yet to find any app it is blocking. The play store for androidTV is horrible. LauncherX is fairly easy to install. As with tank and sloan, i would expect issues with roms.

We're working on mantis yes but this takes its time...
For now all is working except OMX and Audio so it's not worth to release anything.
We will create the ROM thread when it's enough usable.
Just wait...

Hi Rortiz2,
Why are you so mad about this thread? We did not ask for a working ROM or any release dates and we appreciate all your time and dedication to the project...
As I wrote in the subject, this is a WIP (Work in Progress) ROM... Have seen so many threads like this in other forums here on XDA where the ROM only boots but nothing works...
I have created this thread to allow other devs to join the project (if nobody talks about it, than nobody knows that a project already exists and can not help).
But if you would like to do this project alone, just tell me an I will delete this thread...
Best regards,
Michael

Just throwing out an idea here but would getting some kind of test build out help? Perhaps getting some catlogs from the community could help find a solution? Again just throwing an idea out.

+1 for a test build, I've got a bricked 4k that boots both the hacked bootloader and TWRP, but whatever image I install has no display...
So I would like to try anything else even if stuff is broken on it (just to see if I can get a display).
thx.

It's at developer's discretion to discuss or release test builds here and considering that this particular rom still has some major bugs (call them deal breakers if you want), then i personally agree with the devs not releasing it yet.
Also, i didn't tested personally, but probably a custom rom like this may also break some features available on stock rom.
This being said, i'm sure that it will be released as soon as the guys behind it will consider it stable enough.
P. S. BTW, thread title is misleading and probably aldo violates XDA rules.

I totally understand and respect that. I did bring up having some kind of developer/user test build done just in case that could help further along getting said bugs fixed by getting catlogs that might help narrow down what is causing the issues. But if the devs feel that doing that would only slow things down (or even not help at all) then I respect that decision.

That's the nature of things when it comes to Lineage OS ROMs (and AOSP in general). Sometimes devs are able to get the ROMs to have nearly all the functionality of the device working... and sometimes not. But I generally prefer Lineage myself due to the overall experience being faster since LOS tends to not have all the bloat that stock ROMs sometimes have - especially Amazon devices which feel so bloated down with garbage I will never use.

Hi Pretoriano80,
As I already replied to one of the devs, I never asked for a release date or ROM for flashing. The title also is marked as WIP (Work in Progress), that means that the ROM is in development and not ready for use...
I have seen that you already made a great job with the custom kernel. Thanks! Would you also like to help this project as it seems it also can use your kernel? Kernel dev with ROM devs would be the best team!
Thanks again to all devs that work hard for releasing new stuff for the Amazon devices...
How's the progress so far?
Looks like nothing much: https://github.com/LOSMantis/android_vendor_amazon_mantis
Too bad !!
dead project ?
I made a test build (with many warnings). Also I used the kernel from @Pretoriano80.
You can download it here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=324510
Please note that I couldn't test this out yet, so be careful of what you do. (Will try it out for myself soon)

it's not worth to test since it's a dead project, it would be more usefull to begin a new project developing LineageOS 16 rom , At least we will be able to use the new Android/Google TV UI.

LineageOS 16 won't ever be able to happen for the Mantis version because it doesn't support treble, the most it could do is LOS 14.1 since it's a legacy device.
