I have not yet updated my Captivate to 2.2. Reading posts in regard to the update I am very bothered by a common complaint that battery life has just died. My Captivate has excellent battery life using it fairly heavily over a 1 day period. I charge it every nite. Also, my GPS is workng fine in 2.1. So am considering not updating it due to the problems I am hearing about.
Anyone else have input on battery life after the update??
I went from STOCK 2.1 to Cognition 4.1 (built on Froyo 2.2) and my battery life is about the same. My usage varies wildly from day to day, but as best as I can tell, overall battery consumption is about equal.
I wonder if the people complaining about battery life have set up their phone "post-update" with different apps or turned on "apps syncing background data"...
Battery life did reduce on 2.2 but it is obvious in my point of view. But its not too bad either.
it's about the same, i upgraded to stock 2.2, feel no difference on the battery life. moderate usage last mine for about more than 24 hrs, u should update to froyo for you to experience it.

I upgraded Stock 2.2 end of Feb and noticed a big drop in my battery life the first week. But just reading above, i did turn on "apps syncing background data" so i think that's my problem. Just turned that off so we shall see...
Let your phone go through a week or so recharging cycle before judging its battery life after a ROM flashing. You just lost all your battery stats when flash a new ROM. Your phone/OS has no clue how your battery will operate until it has time to learn or you manually calibrate it.
For what it is worth, my battery life is about the same or slightly better than leaked 2.2 ROM as well as 2.1 ROM. No big changes.
My battery has been about the same since the 2.2 upgrade. At first it felt like my battery was draining quicker but I also noticed I was playing with more phone more. The screen is the biggest power drain on the phone so just playing with menus and looking at new settings can cause a small dent.
Give it a week or two after upgrading and you'll notice it'll be about the same. Unless of course you have more accounts or programs syncing data in the background.
Why upgrade to 2.2
Thanks everyone for the input. The more I read and hear the more I am leaning toward not upgrading to 2.2. On different forums I am seeing and hearing problems with battery life and some saying about the same battery life. Also, seeing GPS not being fixed or going from working ok or good to not working so good. Right now my phone does everything I want, GPS works really good, email works fine, internet works fine, battery life is outstanding, mp3 works great, screens all are clean and to my liking, I have an easy work around for turning off 3G and one tap returning my volumes to normal after using a USSD code.
REally cannot see any advantage to upgrading and risking introducing a problem I don't need. The list of new features really does not thrill me.

2.2 ROM is a big step forward, not backward, IMO. Sure it didn't solve GPS issue but it is not making it worse either. GPS issue is purely hardware issue. If you have a good one, it doesn't matter which stock firmware you use.
I just can't see any disadvantage for upgrading (other than slightly more difficult to root or unlock, but not impossible). Battery life thing is as I mentioned above. You will see all kinds of complaints (either dain too fast or too slow) after a new firmware comes out, any firmware. You don't know what you're missing until you upgraded.
I noticed a big improvement in battery life. Sometimes with light use it will last up to four days, whereas before with 2.1 it would putter out after maybe two days.
GPS isn't fixed, but drop one of many GPS fixes in and it will get somewhat normal performance.
Wifi sleep policy
You may also want to check the Wifi sleep policy after the upgrade to Froyo. In my case, the default was "Never sleep". Changing this to "When screen turns off" improves battery life on 2.2, as it does on 2.1.

I'm on stock 2.2 since the day it came out. My battery life is actually trending worse day-by-day. I did a full battery clear/reset this weekend and after 4 days I'm finding battery life is not improving at all. The degradation from stock 2.1 is significantly noticeable to me.
For the first couple of days post-update it seemed actually to be better, but got worse and worse, to where I was lucky to find the phone working 12 hours after disconnecting from the charger @ 100% ... even if I hadn't -touched- the phone during the day. My applications loaded are virtually identical to before.
I did have Background Data on, so I've just disabled it, but was this option not in 2.1? I know that Google Voice, etc, were doing background syncs in 2.1.
It can't be WiFi, as for the last 2-3 days I've kept WiFi turned off. However just for sanity I did adjust the sleep policy.
I'm wondering ... my battery woes seemed to start when I hooked up my Microcell. Could having a strong 3G signal so close to the phone actually be causing problems?

That might be your problem. I don't know. I know 2.1 doesn't work very well with microcell either.
Yep. I'm pretty convinced it is the microcell now. Phone works great with it from a call/data/signal standpoint. However after unplugging my microcell last night, charging my phone to 100%, and then letting the phone discharge normally with no microcell ... I'm now 10 hours later and have an almost full battery.
Sad, because our reception here is so spotty that we lose calls and data regularly without the microcell. My wife says her phone charge has been pretty normal, so I'm getting ready to move the cell away from my desk and see if distance helps the story.
So, as far as this thread is concerned, my results for 2.2 and battery life are great ... better than with 2.1 ... just don't use it with a microcell.
Froyao 2.2 Battery Usage Dillema
I see no significant or excess battery drain while riding the KB1 over the JF6.
Just a thought for those experiencing excessive or significant battery drain. KB1 loads some new features and new additional bloatware that loads on boot and runs as a service, process and both.
If you're familiar with poking around your system settings and understand what doesn't need to always be running in the background, or what doesn't need to load on boot, you can simply kill the process and even alter the way a certain application handles on boot.
By killing many unneeded or unwanted processes at boot time, it will significantly save you hours upon hours of battery life in the longer scheme.
Another FYI, Lithium Ion batteries have memory. You need to train or retrain the batteries memory over time in order to sustain a longer life for it.
Tips:
Don't continually through the charger on your device after minimal drainage. Let the battery run down before fully recharging it again.
When flashing to another ROM wipe your battery stats.
When flashing any new code to your device - a few forced charge deaths to purge the battery and reset the memory again prior to recharging may be a good idea...

firstly, i just wanna say that the HTC Incredible S is a solid and terrific device, previously owning an iPhone 4 i might like the HTC better, except for some things...
The battery:
i read some reviews before buying and every reviewer seemed to love the phone and what the battery has to offer. I've owned the phone for a week, and charge it through the USB cable, connected to my PC, and sometimes the wall socket.
But it seems to me that the battery is a bit short.... if i want the battery full i will let it charge overnight, the next day i powered it on, sent a few texts and listened to half a song and the battery has already drained to 70%, coming to this from an iPhone 4 is disgusting.
I've got Auto-Sync and background data working, i like push notifications for Emails and Facebook and i like the weather to update on its own, also HTC sense incase i need to do things remotely, everything else has been set not to sync.
One of my favorite features is Auto Brightness, which is enabled on default, but when i check battery use it says that 70% has gone to the display, 12% cell network and everything else. I have a task killer that kills all processes when i turn the screen off..
Any help??
Wiping the battery stats a few times helped me, I used to recharge the phone to full battery and after unplugging it from the charger, it would drop to 94% in a few seconds...Oh, after 2-3 weeks, not after a week!
Also I get twice the battery life on Cyanogen 7.1, than on any other Rom I've tried...I get at least 2-3 days with good usage, tons of mails, sms, calls, weather apps etc. Wifi and BT always on. No juice defender or anything like that...
Dropping to ~95% can also be normal though. To preserve the battery the charging circuit should cutout when it reaches 100% charge and let it discharge to 95% before turning on again.
If you do wipe the battery stats make sure you read some guides and do it properly as I've found that more often than not it will have a detrimental affect (from needing to charge before it has fully discharged, or needing to reboot etc).

wipe the stats? sorry im still new to android but so far so good, im impressed with everything else in the incredible s, its very snappy and has a bigger screen vs iPhone 4.
if it helps, i have the phone fully turned off if i charge it overnight.
also, i read on another forum that while it's still brand new it needs to run a few charge cycles to strengthen the battery, if that is true.
It always drops to 95% when the battery is fully charged. S-ON Incredible S is not allowed to wipe battery status. Should I unlock it?
Yes, I forgot to mention...to wipe the battery stats you need to unlock the Hboot...If you have Hboot 1.16.000, then the only option is this:

Unlocking the Hboot is giving you a few benefits, you get to install the CWM recovery and do a full backup of your Rom...Without unlocking the Hbtoot, if your Rom crashes, you can't flash any Rom so you have to send it back to HTC Service ...With the Hboot unlocked you can install custom Roms, you can restore a full backup, you can flash GAPPS etc, wipe battery stats directly from recovery etc etc...
So many benefits...
Now back on how to wipe the stats...The principle behind is simple, if 100%=4.3V and the stats are incorrectly set for 100%=3.9V, then you're never actually recharging the battery to full capacity, which is rubbish...
The way I do it is this - charge to 100%, boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Now use the phone until it's shutting down and then charge to 100% again.
Very important is to avoid rebooting the phone after the stats were wiped until the phone is fully recharged. Here is a thread about this process:

In my view, recharging while the phone is off makes no difference.
Yes, it's true. With all my Android phones I went through the same thing, first week or so, the battery was rubbish, but after about 2 weeks it improved a lot.
yeah, i've had it for around one week. so i might take your word for it and give it a chance, maybe for 2 weeks. i was thinking of bringing it back to the store but i'll give it a chance.
a part from the short battery at the moment it's a pretty terrific phone and i like it more than the iPhone 4.
Once the battery is conditioned, phone is rooted, custom Rom installed, bloat frozen out or uninstalled, then you can expect your phone battery to last a good full day with regular usage. No need to switch off when charging over night.

well i've had it for almost 2 weeks now. I charged again overnight last night and used it to listen to music and play NinJump/Bejewled on the way home today, battery uptime was just over 30 mins and the battery was down to 70% remaining. That's a bit quick if you ask me.
Not sure what's happening with your phone...but my Inc S has really good battery life, similar to Iphone 4...
At the moment is not rooted (that's why I couldn't take a screenshot) and it's on stock 2.3.3. With BT and Wifi always on, with tons of e-mails daily, browsing, calls (at least 20 minutes per day), tons of messages, etc etc
Screen brightness is always set to maximum and I get at least 2 days battery life, see attached photo...
I'm not playing games or listen to music...so I can't test that side of things and maybe that's where the problem lies.
What's your Battery Usage app saying?
Is there anything unusual listed there?

Maybe try disabling the Optus bloatware. Had a bit of an improvement when I did it to mine. Also be mindful about what apps are running in the background constantly, they could also have an impact on battery life. Screen is a huge battery killer if its constantly on, autobrightness can help slightly if you haven't enabled it already.

That battery usage sounds awesome! I have mine on Auto Brightness and WiFi turned off but its nothing like yours. My battery usage app says most of it has gone to the brightness, of course that percentage goes down when i start opening apps.
edit: im also using the stock Android 2.3.3 installed from the factory. and disabled my Advanced Task Killer, battery is still the same, but the phone now lags a lot less. so thats a plus for now.

When i first got the phone i noticed Optus loaded it with rubbish apps i'd never even touch. I disabled auto updates for the bloatware and forced stop for all the ones running. it doesnt look like i can remove them though :\

Yes, after i charge it for some time i always remove the usb cord. cos its finished charging, right?

do you get good reception where you live? i find that seems to drain most of my battery.

ok atm my incredible s is saying 4 hrs 26 min uptime and 1 hr 21 min awake time, 50% left. my signal here is great, the speed of the internet even beats my ADSL 2+ sometimes. should i be thinking of warranty back to store?
Before i rooted my phone i was charging my phone twice a day - this was nothing new to me as i had been charging my 3gs at least twice a day for the past two years.
However like somebody else has said, once the phone is rooted and all that optus junk has been deleted it lasts a lot longer. And you can notice the difference, my phone has been rooted for 2 days now and i have been on it none stop, modding all the appearence and downloading apps. I have been using it a lot more than i was before it was rooted and it has lasted at least twice as long. So for battery usage i should deffo root. Its HTC sense/screen that hammers your battery. Go look at battery usage and yourll see what i mean.
Also, i know this might sound stupid. But charging it through a wall socket (for me) seems quicker to charge, and seems to last longer than if its charged through a laptop/PC. Although ive thought this for my 3gs as well. If its actually true i dont know haha.

sounds just about right. my iPhone 4 needed a charge like once every 2 - 4 days, i thought it was awesome. On the Incredible S it says that 62% of the battery usage has gone to display, with very little apps on the list.
The optus apps are just sitting there. Because im on Amaysim i can't exactly use them properly because you need an actual optus account. ive tried opening some of the optus apps, they're mostly just web links and theres a Mobile TV and a Music Store app i believe, but i never at all use them. so they cant be consuming any data, memory or battery or anything, right??
Im still unsure about 'rooting'. Im guessing it's android's version of the jailbreak or a godmode on the device? i might need some help on it, i know how to flash windows mobile and jailbreak iTouch devices easily.
But then again, a lot of people have bought this phone, they cant all be experiencing terrible battery life and i dont think every user would have a root on their device.
I bought it from DickSmith here in Aus, the guy there told me there's a 1 yr back to store warranty. The phone is solid and one of the best phones i've ever had, plus a good price tag on it, its a shame to let a weak battery spoil it.
im thinking of returning it, but i heard somewhere it needs a couple weeks to strengthen the battery, if that's the case then there's no point getting a new one only to wait longer, ill give it a little more time. Plus HTC is releasing 2.3.5 software for the Incredible S soon, and wikiPedia states that it's got "Improved battery efficiency". but ill still keep root in mind for when i get more use to the device.

Yes, about 40min to 1hour display on... sometimes more...I will attach a screenshot once I get throughout the whole battery.
Yes, generally good coverage and mostly 3G...I'm on Optus.
My phone has been rooted before, but now it's on stock Rom as an experiment...
I would strongly advise on rooting, it changes the phone completely.
And remove any animation (live wallpapers) those are killing the battery.
Also found one more thing. If you've got Facebook installed it refreshes every hour, i set mine to never refresh, but you can still receive notifications
But i still don't get why the battery drains soo quickly, even on standby.
edit: found one more thing.
uptime and awake time. when i turn the screen off and awake time should stop counting as the phone is locked and im not using any apps, right?? in some cases i've noticed the awake timer still counts.
example: awake time will read 1:52:39, turn the screen off at this point. go back a couple hours later it's been counting as awake the whole time, and has half battery life it did eventhough i haven't touched the device since locking it and turning off the screen.
in some cases the awake timer will not budge when i lock the phone and turn the screen off and still find the same amount of battery life remaining when i come back.

I was wondering if anyone is experiencing significantly worse battery life since the update. Today I kept my phone in battery saver mode all day, barely used it, stayed mostly in my apartment, and it's down to 15% after 12 hours. I'm pretty disappointed, as I had read that battery life was supposed to actually be marginally improved with 4.3.
Looking at my battery usage, the Android System percentage seems way up from what it used to be, though I might be making this up. Also, some of the apps I used a bit (Facebook, Instagram, whatever) aren't showing up in the usage stats.
I recall that my battery life wasn't so great for the first couple days after I initially got the phone, so I've been hoping that it just needs to re-adjust to my usage, but that hasn't happened yet. Otherwise, any ideas what I might try to fix this?

Its not just you, I also noticed worse battery life on 4.3.
Your not alone, use a program to monitor battery use ie gsam monitor.I noticed Google services is waking my phone like 220 times in 12 hours. My battery use is up and I'm getting like 9 hours less time because of it.

I had similar issues, especially where I work. That place is on a fringe location where it switches 4g and 3g depending on how deep in the store you are. Where I work, I would always have 3g and the phone would get super hot and I'd burn through 50, 60 or more percent battery in 5 hours or so. It was rediculous. This afternoon, I said screw it and did a factory reset (I'm bone stock btw). Tonight, I worked a 7 hour shift and had 4g most of the time (never happened before) and the phone stayed cool to the touch. I lost about 20% battery. Just something you guys might wanna try. I know its a pain in the butt to do, but, at least for me, it seems to have been worth it.
Im running on stock rom, and my battery is much better than before. Maybe it has something to do with the rom?

I'm stock as well. I can try a factory reset, but I'd like to try anything else possible first.

Has anyone tried flashing the older radio over the new firmware? I think the signal is weaker with the new radio. Maybe it's switching back and forth between 2g/3g/4g causing high system usage stats. Can anyone try and report back?

I was at home on WiFi for almost the whole day, so I doubt that's the problem, though it's not impossible. I just installed WakeLock Detector a few minutes ago although it's only been running for a sec, so far looks like the Sprint Visual Voicemail app is using CPU wakelock a LOT. Could this be the culprit?

I'd buy that, though idk that it explains everything. I generally got good battery life, but I'm lucky enough to get fairly solid 4g at school and home. Work is the only place where it was iffy, and that is also where I had the worst battery life. The signal is not (in my experience) weaker. The bars just reflect data, not voice now, making it seem weaker. The only other weird thing is that the stability of my wifi connections is better than it was before the reset, and that I get 4g at all at work when previously I had to be at the end of the parking lot to get it.

Maybe. Ive also heard that theres a bug in chrome that also wakes your phone. Keep the app running to find out anyways. Ive disabled my visual voicemail since I don't use it myself.
Ever since update my battery is draining crazy. I just woke up and looked at my phone that was plugged in all night. And it's only 44 % charged. WTF!!

I was at home on WiFi for almost the whole day, so I doubt that's the problem, though it's not impossible. I just installed WakeLock Detector a few minutes ago although it's only been running for a sec, so far looks like the Sprint Visual Voicemail app is using CPU wakelock a LOT. Could this be the culprit?

I take VVM off my phone, so its not that, at least in my case. I ran system panel yesterday and the top battery consumer is a process called binder_2. Its always that.
To me, turning off 4g made an absurd difference in battery life. There's a bug with 4g for sure. It never reconnects back to 4g for me once it switches to 3g and the drain is just horrible. I literally get 5 times better battery life out of the phone on CDMA only and truly, LTE is not 5 times better. I prefer consistency and better battery life over speed. So I just turned it off.
I read that up there claiming a factory reset eliminated the battery drain. I'll look into it. I just don't want to do a factory reset cause it's too much work.
Mine better! Signal bars lower both wifi & gsm, but... The true result better, I don't know why? Even no wifi signal bars, Internet still works,

That's very similar to what I had going on. I also had some issues where the phone would tell me x amount of internal storagespace remaining after installing certain apps and the reset (seems to have) fixed that too. If you use an app like Helium backup (no root needed) the reset might be a lot less painful, and I'm almost sure it will help you.
Yeah, I don't think it was actually VVM. I tried to let the WakeLock Detector app run for a while, but it kept causing my phone to restart randomly and I'd lose all the data it had collected, so I just uninstalled it. Looking like a hard reset's in my future. Balls.

Back on ecliptic 4.2.2, superb battery life is back. I'll get back on the 4.3 bandwagon again when we start getting custom kernels to fix what HTC broke.
My device is unrooted
Everything was going great until the newest update that came last week. Since this my battery life has gone down hill fast. I feel like I'm back on my G1.
I have two questions is anyone else having this issue at all?
My other question is all my previous phones have had SD card spots so when I reset myphone all my pictures are stored there. If I reset myphone do I lose all my pictures?
Battery life has been good for me on that build and the recent fi build as well. Do you have a secondary battery meter like better battery stats? There is no sd card in the phone so yes that would be lost.
of course you can check why your battery times have dropped.. like maybe a stuck process or a certain app draining battery. im nearly 100% sure its not because of the update, but it can be user related. your signal quality could be worse as well, which will also drain battery faster.

you really should be doing this regardless. countless times people have come on here all frantic because something happened to their device and they lost all pics needlessly.

When I feel my phone getting hot or I notice the drain is going on I turn off my phone let it set to cool down or I just straight up restart it.
I live a pretty routine based life, Work, Church, Gym, Home.... So my signal life hasn't changed. My usage hasn't gone up or down....but my battery has since that update.
I do have battery apps to keep an eye on things. Display is number (of course) and number 2 which isn't normal is Android OS.

One thing else I just noticed is my phone doesn't hit deep sleep either
Deep sleep is at 4hrs and 300mhz is at 13hrs

well, what ive found out iver the years that im with android is that battery apps are pointless, and end up using your battery. just check you regular battery usage/stats. nobody uses their phones the exact same way every single time, its impossible. and when you are out, walking around, or driving, your signal quality will change, constantly. and apps, many times they will get a process stuck, and drain much more battery than normal. and then there is google play services, that will occasionally drain lits of battery, especially when its updating itself. in reality, there are numerous other reasons, besides the update, that will make you battery drain quicker. too numerous to list, lol.

my battery also has been going deep underground after last security update! nothing changed in the usage or the number of apps that i keep installed, so the suspect that the drain depends on the update in my opinion is becoming more and more real.
i also keep checking battery's stats and there isn't any anomaly or discrepancy compared to pre-update's stats.
I am in the same boat. I was using about 2-3 percent an hour before the security patch. But since the patch dropped I've been averaging about 10 percent an hour. I have to recharge at least once in the middle of the day. None of my apps changed.
Same here, noticeable difference in battery performance since last weeks update. Only change to apps is I am now using Google fit since last week, thought it was that but battery stats say otherwise.

So last night I backed up all my pictures on my computer and the cloud. Tonight I will reset my phone before bed Ill have a better idea of what it will do tomorrow. It kinda stinks because I have this zooper/launchy/popup widget masterpiece going on my homescreen

I have noticed the same issue since the OTA patch. Reminded me of my old Galaxy S where it would not go into deep sleep after being unplugged at a full charge without a reboot. I've gone without a reboot and with rebooting since the update and my phone is much better off after a reboot. About 7% per hour lost without compared to about 3-4% per hour lost with a reboot. Pretty consistent usage on a daily basis. Just my personal observation. I'm on AT&T though.
I got better battery life after the update... But then it went back to normal. I was being about 30 to 45 minutes extra SOT but now I'm back to my average times of 4-4:15 hours

Take this for what it is.... I wake up at 545 grab my phone since the update by the time I get to work 7am it would be 96 or below.... I reset my phone last night and the phone seems back to normal at 99%-98%when I sit at my desk..... All apps reloaded and working before bed.....
My N6 is worse off for battery too after OTA update of last week. Seems like Google Services has just gotten a lot more aggressive doing what it is supposed to be doing. I hope Marshmallow will fix this.

Well, mine also loses a lot per hr...and it alsways is the cell interface that is being kept awake over hours of time during a day.
Mainly email and Google services are the apps sucking it off...
Any ideas?

Have been using my new note 9 after replacing it with my s8+. So far it's a pretty good phone. One of the primary reasons for me to get was the large battery such that it will last m even more longer. But I have been noticing poor performance everyday. At the end of the day, I am bleeding to 10%. The s8+ was given to my wife and I compared her usage vs mine and for same amount of screen time I ended up at 30% and she was at 67%. I have less amount of apps installed than hers and she is heavy user of all social media apps. I have been observing my battery performance and what seems to be draining the most is the Android system, Google play services and Android OS. They claim all together half of my battery life. I noticed that there was an update right after I setup my note 9 initially and not sure if that could have caused it. Is there any way I can reverse it to see if it was the update? I have already tried wiping out the cache and shutting down all background activities on those items and blocked notification on pretty much most of the apps. How is everyone else's experience on the battery? I forgot to capture screen shot but will do it at the end of today.

I'm chiming in because I'm currently using the Note 9 ATT variant. My battery life has been pretty decent, but it's tough because the usage and even my "all day" and your "all day" can differ so much. Are you using 1080 resolution or did you set it to the higher resolution? I'm also running the ATT update you mentioned. But I'm also using wifi calling, not sure if that hurts or helps battery life, I haven't used it on my previous unlocked international HTC devices, so I'm just starting to experiment.
Have you enabled any of the battery optimization?
You can go to settings/device maintenance and click on battery on the bottom. I have it set to off in the "presets" but at the lower part of the page you can see "app power monitor" and see the app's power usage per hour. If you've got some that are higher, you can click on just those apps to check them on the list, and then click "save power" and see if your battery life gets better.
Possibly if you're using always on display you can modify that, if it's not something you really need and have already addressed.
Thanks for your reply. I am not running any battery optimization. I wanted to try default. Yes, I looked at battery usage per app and don't find anything bothering or consuming extra battery. Resolution is set to 1080 and always on display is off. Also. Wifi calling is on at all times. I am not sure if I am expecting too much but after using s8+ for over a year I was expecting much decent battery life with less than half of the apps installed on s8+ and having a bigger battery on this beast. I will need to find out how to lower down those Android system, os and Google play services.
My device is unlocked but on AT&T's network and I'm running my screen at max resolution and close to max brightness. My screen and AOD are always one and two with the O/S running a distant third or fourth sometimes fifth. If Google Play Services is consuming that much battery it is constantly running in the background trying to sync or pull data which it's not getting. Focus on that application and you should be fine, my phone is typically at greater than 50% at the end of the day and I use it all the time.

How do you find which app or service is running in background which is trying to pull or sync data?
Just a note, I had to drop t-mobile to make a point with them for screwing with my account. Houston has good coverage but the network is congested and that is an understatement. My battery life went down on my V20 and my note4 when on ATT's network. Not that the reception was always poor, because it is very poor at my house, but speeds and latency on ATTs LTE were like going back to HSPA. Sometimes it was better to turn off LTE and just put up with the super high latency to get decent speeds on ATT.

Go into settings/apps/Google Play Services/Battery and see what it's been doing. You can restrict the app as well from there I believe, also clear the cache. As I stated I would focus on that app specifically.

I then i stalled all my apps and the battery life took a hit again. I'd come home from a 9 hour day of work and be in the 40s. I downloaded betterbatterystats and let it monitor my phone overnight. I found that com.att.iqi was running all the time and constantly causing wake locks. I downloaded package disabler pro and disabled that package. Now when I leave work I am at 75% battery for the past two days. By bed time my phone has been off the charger for 18 hours with about 4 hours screen on time and I'm between 25%-35% which is outstanding. I made a thread with my complaint comparing the battery to my iPhone X and was called a troll because android can do no wrong. In short get betterbatterystats and package disabler pro.

It's a great app specifically for targeting issues like this, but I've always used it on rooted devices so I didn't recall if it worked on unrooted devices. Try Wake lock detector lite. One simple adb command allows you see wakeup locks etc ..

My battery life on the ATT version has been garbage too. I was going to return it, but I missed my 14 day window. Thus far, my S9+ was a better device, but I'm hoping the little bugs get squashed in an upcoming update.
One thing I'm wondering about is Bixby. My battery life seems to be pretty decent with ATT. I don't use Bixby, although I haven't disabled the app, I don't have it set up or signed in.

I actually managed to return mine and got another note 9 thinking that I would try it without doing the first update. Unfortunately that software update thing popped up while I was using the phone and I hit continue by mistake. I am kind of thinking about returning this one and getting the s9 plus if I still have this crappy battery life.

I'm not a battery life hawk,but,there's a few things you can do without crippling your phone (some already mentioned) before throwing in the towel.
1) Go to each app in SETTINGS > APPS > MOBILE DATA & turn off ALLOW BACKGROUND DATA USAGE on apps that have this option & where you're absolutely sure this will not impact something important to your usage.
2) Package Disabler Pro was already mentioned,it's well worth the price of admission. This is where you'll likely see the biggest improvement,surely no one here uses every single feature/app on any phone,force stop & disable what you're not using.
3) Again,I'm not a battery stat ninja,I just use my phone as I see fit,but,others have suggested try using FHD instead of WQHD for screen resolution. I myself use WQHD,but,I'm content with my battery life,however,I'd give it a try if I felt the need.
4) If you have NFC on,turn it off until you need to use it,access to it is quick & easy. I myself do not use NFC,but,even if I did,I can't imagine I'd use it to the point to where I'd leave it on 24/7 for convenience of use.
What's important to your usage is in the eye of the beholder,so,that's the extent of my recommendations for battery recommendations. The few I've mentioned should net some improvement without negatively affecting your routine usage.

Yes. But it seems to stop working once the battery level reaches a certain point. I think it was somewhere below 80% , probably 60% . I installed it last night.

I'm trying to ascertain which one to use. Apparently this app shows all wakelocks whereas better battery stats only shows partial wakelocks, from the small amount of research that I've done.
The dev apparently doesn't respond and has abandoned the app, again from research I've done

I am trying a rundown tomorrow with power save. Just CPU and screen brightness. I left resolution and network usage on. I don't think brightness does much. It is supposed to be -10% but I have trained my auto brightness some and I have been having to turn it up. So I think only speed limiter CPU 70% is at play.
