MTP Connection Problem on Mi5 - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hi Everybody,
I'm trying to connect my Mi5 with my PC using MTP connection (i'm on Ubuntu). The problem is that I can see the device connected and mounted but i can't copy anything from it. It always crashes. Strange thing I can copy files from pc to the device without any problem, but if i try to copy something from the device to my pc it always says " libtmp: Could not get file from device."
I've also tried with windows, but nothing changed. i cannot copy or transfer any type of file.
While googling around i've found that this might be an Android 6.0 related problem rather that a MIUI one.
But i've also tried a possible solution that has been proposed which consists in changing a configuration under developer option and switch it back but it didn't work.
here's the steps i've followed:
Open Settings
Enable Developer options:
Go to About phone (or tablet)
Scroll to the bottom
Tap Build number repeatedly. After several taps you will see it count down and then say "You are now a developer!"
Back to Settings
Tap Developer options, near the bottom
Scroll down to and tap Select USB Configuration
Change it to Charging only
Tap Select USB Configuration again
Change it back to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
I don't know how to proceed.
If someone can help me it would be great!

Hi!
Try a factory reset. Maybe it will help. (just a thought)

Nope didn't work at all

How long do you have to tap build number?` nothing happens here :/
Edit.
Found it tapping Miui rather than build version, but cant find the USB configuration after being in developer mode.

@zofox I don't have a solution but can confirm the problem.
On WIndows 10 latest release, it's working like a charm.
When I connect the Mi 5 to a Usb 2 or Usb 3 port on Ubuntu (same computer) it does nothing, only charging works.
So that means: I am not sure if it's a problem with Ubuntu, your PC or both!

I'm using a dell XPS13 2015 and it doesn't work neither on windows or ubuntu
right now i'm using ftp to comunicate but it's pretty annoying also the fact that i can copy stuffs from pc to mi5 but not the opposite it's pretty strange ...

It might be the USB port(s) in question: check if the port used is on some external controller or part of the PCH/southbridge (i.e. part of the motherboard); next up, try direct ports instead of through USB hubs (if any in between). Other than this, I have no further idea.

Seems like it was a cable related problem ?
Changed it and everything works like a charm ?
Mods can close the discussion ?

First go to settings, then click the option 'about phone'.
Then click on 'miui version' several times until u become the developer.
Then go back to settings and find the 'developers option' in the 'additional settings' .
Afterwards look for the 'usb configuration' option in the 'networking' section.
There select the 'mtp' option
This worked very well for me and solved all my problem

change the cable works like a charm, thanks!! you guys save my semester.

This works like a charm to me. Only one thing I have noticed is, in my phone(Mi5) Developer options comes under Additional settings of systems& Device section.

That's exactly what helped me !

Thanx bro
I was facing the same issue in redmi note 5 pro.

I had same on Redmi 5 (rosy), my 'solution' was to drag drop down down, tap Android System and change from 'Charge this device' to 'Transfer files'. I was expecting a pop up when I connected the cable to select what I wanted to do, none came.

AOKP Enable MTP (usb computer connection)

For those who are using [ROM][ICS][AOKP]Galaxian-Soup[GT-7310/7300][r1] who thinks usb computer connection don't work, well it does..here's how
1. go to settings
2. storage

Thank you so much carth24, I enabled the option and will try if it works tonight but I'm sure it will.
Thank you!
Jesus, I feel stupid.
Thank you so much for your post. I spend the last hour searching for new drivers and a solution.
Did a full wipe earlier and couldn't restore the adb backup.
It applys to any device running AOKP I guess. At least it did to my Galaxy Nexus. Thanks again!

Sadly mtp doesn't work in Linux..
thanks alot bud, that helped me out after about an hour trying to install drivers, lol....
And you know what else is great about this?
If your MTP isn't working great, or being flakey (more often than not), you can select mass storage and give that a go too. But apps using storage data may be stopped I think as it relegates usage to data transfer to computer

Don't know how well this works, but I ran into it searching for something else.
http://gmtp.sourceforge.net/
What about usb thumb drives? I get the message that it is corrupted when mtp is on. If I turn on ptp nothing happens except that I get the message "usb storage is being prepared".
Any idea?
Thanks guy you roxxx
Guys,
I just got one of these tabs recently. I will upload a fix that will allow the corret build.prop updates and file configuration to allow te Samsung tab to work in USB mode always.
On linux the reason why MTP doesn't work is because Samsung tab is transmitting as if it is a camera (which sux quite frankly)and that means your device that is reading the transmission NEEDs to have drivers for that particular device. Allowing the mass storage method that I will make for you should enable the Mass storage on any device....heck you could even plug it into the side of a TV and it will see the folders on your SD card haha
I have this working on other samsung devices, so I can't see why it wouldnt work on the tab? I believe there are kenels on here that say USB host even? So I will assume the method will work. I just have to familarise my self with the partition layout etc on this you-bute toy I now have
Ive come cross from Dev'ing S1, more recently S2 and now this cool lil Tab!
So hi from Aust.

[Q] USB Connection Options

Hello there.
First of all, the backgrounds...
I'm using CM11 by Maclaw, running 4.4.4
I got curious and unticked MTP on the notification tray. Usually the system won't let you untick it unless you tick the other option. But this actually left both options untick, so now it won't even connect to my laptop, and the option in the notification tray disappeared. All that is left is the USB debugging mode option. I still hear the sound when you plug a usb device on my laptop but it's not just connecting. I've tried rebooting. There's also no setting (that I could see) that would let you choose which connection method you want.
Any idea what's happening here? Or how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!!!
Update: Never mind. You could actually press the menu button when inside Storage in Settings.

Can't enable MTP after disabling it on CM12 ROM...

Title says it all, really.
I flashed CM12 onto my Kindle Fire 7" (5th Gen) and I disabled MTP by clicking 'charge only' for the USB connections.
Now, I can't enable MTP back on so I cannot access any files through the USB on my PC...
Any help? ;-;
Same here. I have no idea why. Also setting search doesn't work.

I've found a fix! Except I'm not sure if this will work for you I just randomly did stuff and it ended up working.
1. Download 'SG USB Mass Storage Enabler' on the App Store (can't post links, and yes, I know it's supposed to be for Samsung devices but... bare with me)
2. Grant root access, and click on 'MTP'.
3. At the top, if connected to a PC, and if you pull your notifications down, you may see 'Connected as a charging device' or something along the lines like that.
4. Tap it, it should be on MTP, except it probably won't be working, try tapping another option and then clicking on the notification again, it should still remain as 'Connected as a charging device.'
5. If so, replug into your PC and a notification should appear somewhere on your screen saying 'Fire - Choose what happens to this device'
6. Click on that, choose it to view files et voila! It should be up and running.

MTP Dosent Work ON PC, Charge Only is always on.

For a few days now, after connecting my usb cable to the pc, i get the "connect" sound on both the PC and the Phone, but it keeps going to charge only, not MTP. I checked the Dev Options, set it to MTP, still didnt work.
I also did a factory reset, nothing. Any ideas?
Also, the notification popup for choosing the connection type via USB, no longer shows up.
EDIT: I tried multiple cables, they are not the problem.
Remove driver on PC > right click on start button > device manager > show disconnected devices and uninstall your mobile driver.
Install again the huawei suite and try connect your phone.

Again, all of the USUAL stuff I've tried. One thing i have noticed, under the options where i chose what type of connection i want to have, if i change it from one to another, it dosen't update right away, i have to close the options, and reopen them to see it change.
Considering you tried the usual software stuff and that you've tried multiple cables, it may be your phone's port that's damaged or something.
If you don't have any sensible data on the phone I suggest doing a factory reset, just to discard the possibility. But if that seems like too much hassle, I would get an ftp app on the playstore to do all the data transferring between your phone and any windows machine. I personally use the solid explorer plugin.
Hope I helped!

You said you've already performed a factory reset, tried cables, tried reinstalling drivers cleanly, and tried several settings on the phone.
Have you gotten HiSuite installed? If so, does HiSuite recognize your phone at all?
Have you also tried different computers? I would figure you did since you said you tried all the obvious things....
If HiSuite gives no response at all and you've already factory reset before, I feel as though its either a hardware problem like FAFI_1999 has suggested, or it is a very deep rooted software bug (behind repair for a regular user, maybe even in kernel, plus there is no clear way of knowing where the exact problem lies at this point so we wouldn't know where to look in the first place).
In this case, best advice I could give you is to send your phone to a service center.... At least if it still falls under warranty....
Does adb see your phone?
For me it always goes to charge only and I have to manually check (or uncheck and recheck) the Files option in the notifications.

The problem is, the notification doesn't even show up, and when i go to options to change it, it dosent want to switch, it just stays the same, no matter what option i choose.

I think i know the issue and i also got the solution.
Maybe the problem is an update KB that was installed on your PC. 3 months ago, Microsoft releasead a KB update that broke MTP ( https://betanews.com/2017/03/10/microsoft-admits-mistake-pulls-problematic-windows-10-driver/ ). Read the article and do what it's recommended for your windows version.
good luck. V

If that KB update is installed, at every reinstall of USB driver its gonna install the wrong one. I had the issue on my laptop and had to uninstall the kb and then plug again the phone in to reinstall the correct usb driver.
If the bug is caused by windows, even if you don't know how it's possible, you should try to repair windows by refresh. It's a long shot, but i had a similar problem, i could not use PPPoE service because my friend unwillingly did something wrong on his laptop. I had to refresh windows to repair the network card driver and finally configure PPPoE service on his laptop.
So... refresh?
best regards, V

P20 Pro Huawei share with pc not working

I just got my new P20 Pro and wanted to try out Huawei's share aka Air drop. Anyway I've managed to locate my phone on my PC [windows 10] but , I can't connect to it. It says error check my name or network ? Any one know a fix for this ? I've tried changing the name from my phone but nothing works. Huawei suggest to clicl the diagnose button which also does nothing.
Help please! Thanks in advance
FIX!
For anyone with this problem I found a fix. Go to control panel > Programs > Turn on or off windows features > Scroll down to SMB 1.0 File sharing support, Click the plus to expand and then check all 3 sub boxes!
windows can not get access to \\ P20PRO
It is possible that the name of the location is not well written or that there is a problem with the network.
Error code: 0 * 80070035
Works fine here and on my Mac.
you need to activate smb direct/client/server
Hijacking this thread. Tried this and still can't connect. Using a Sky Q router.
Yea, i have problems also with the P20 pro and windows 10. I have turned on the SMB settings and still no luck while i can see all my other device in the network just fine...
i did it on widows 10
1. Plug the USB cable into the phone and the computer.
2. Touch Settings.
3. Touch Wireless & networks.
4. Touch Tethering & portable hotspot.
5. Touch the USB tethering slider to turn it on.
6. The phone is now tethered.
7. On the computer, wait for the device drivers to install then click Home network.
8. Wait while the computer automatically applies the settings and connects to the network.
9. Setup is complete. Click Close.
10. Unplug ur phone and it will be working
good luck ^_^

I also had this problem and followed all advice but in the end something else did the trick for me (albeit proposal for activating SMB was mandatory in the end).
So in my case, the problem was that the DNS wasn't resolving my P20 Pro's name. In order to finally access my phone's storage I had to manually open a file explorer window and type in \\<P20's Pro IP address> for example \\192.168.1.8 (you can find this IP address if you check the wireless devices connected to your router via its admin page).
Then in order to make it easier for the future, I went in my router's settings and set it as a static LAN Ip and Pinned the connection on my file explorer, so now I can simple click on it and connect whenever I enable Huawei Share.
I hope this helps people who still couldn't connect via Huawei Share. Just don't forget you still need to activate SMB as OP indicates in his follow-up post.

If it still helps i think i got it.
Use the original huawei charging cable you got with the phone.
I tried it all.. tethering, debugging, hisuite etc.. but nothing worked
1. step Install HiSuite on computer,
2. step plug in your phone with original cable,
3. step HiSuite on computer will run by itself,
4. step select transfer files on your phone,
5. step computer will ask you if you all it to install HiSuite on your phone and click ok,
6. step on your phone pop up will show to install HiSuite on Huawei.
Maybe also go to settings - connections - usb thetering (if needed) and thick it.
Hope it helps, it did for me - but barley lost my mind...
Good luck,
Toni
