WiFi strength, range, and throughput - Xperia Z5 Real Life Review

Rate this thread to express how you think the Sony Xperia Z5's Wifi performs. A higher rating indicates that it has excellent range, throughput, and signal strength. Like when you're taking a dump in the bedroom upstairs, do your videos have to buffer or do they come through without interruption?

problem wifi
i have a router of wimax " bm626 hauwei"
z5 dual connect with it but no internet.
instead i have z3 compact at same time
z3 it connect with it with internet.
why
any one can help?

Did you tried to reset router to default settings? Did you tried to update router to newest firmware?

Thank you for providing this information so that we know how to protect their eyes

Well all I can say is I have no issues with signal strength at all. When my WiFi works fine, the throughput is good too. The problem I am having with mine (on both 6.0 and 6.0.1) is that I lose my WiFi connection every few minutes. What happens is I'll be browsing online and after a few minutes nothing is loading but the signal indicator in the status bar shows a full signal. I have to turn off WiFi on my device, then turn it back on in order for it to keep going. Very irritating. I have many wireless devices in my house, this is the only one doing it. Oh and I've tried using 2 different routers, no change.
Anyone else experience this?

No issue with mine, reaching as fast as 400Mbps near the router. Signal strength works as well as the Intel PCI-E wireless AC7260 cards in my house, so that's pretty impressive. Overall pretty satisfied with the WiFi performance.
I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router with a fibre connection, so I guess that's something.

Im having the exact same issue as you... the connection to the WiFi itself doesnt disconnect.. But what is actually happening is that the Device itself seems like it is putting itself in to this wifi sleep state briefly for a minute or 2 and then just suddenly comes back to it's senses (suddenly wakes up and starts sending/receiving data packets which then resumes loading like normal.. and it does this randomly at nonspecific times..
It could happen within a minute or 2 of using the wifi... or sometimes even after an hour or so of streaming (sometimes within 5 minutes of streaming)....
***NOTE***
My Xperia Z5 has custom ROM and Kernel and is rooted with SuperSU with Xposed and busybox installed running Latest Marshmallow 6.0.1 (.224) Firmware..
THEN I suddenly decided **** this, I'm actually going to fix this shi* lol ( you know that moment when you just had enough and finally decide to bother doing something about it, ).. that's the moment I had..
Anyway to keep this simple...
After several hours of troubleshooting, testing and diagnosing , and trying to narrow down, isolate and fix the damn problem causing it to happen, I'm not sure 100% just yet but I may have found the problem and the fix to this IF the wifi "Hanging" doesnt occur anymore after doing some minor editing of the system files. (Only able to do with a rooted device) .
I will inform you guys with my results in a couple of days and hopefully the outcome is good news .. IF not, ill just have to keep trying and if all else fails ill just factory reset the device since getting everything back on to my phone will only take 30 minutes..
Peace!

Awesome, keep us posted if you find anything! I'm looking into it at my end as well FWIW, I have factory reset and even re-flashed the firmware multiple times with no improvement. Just trying to save you time and effort into reinstalling and stuff

Sweet as bro, thanks for the heads up.. Well so far I haven't noticed any dropouts of any sort as of yet. But I still have some things that I am testing.. Will update soon..
Sent from my Sony E6653 using XDA Labs

Well.. Here i am.. And unfortunately the issues still persisted.. To top it off, my phone decided to start having random moments where it would just restart on its on, even when left idle for a non specific amount of time. Anywhere between 1 and 3hrs.. I started getting really ticked off with it, so I decided to factory reset the device and install the latest (stock) firmware .253 from Sony using xperifirm and flashtool.. Flashed successfuly, applied latest andropluskernel, applied root, and xposed and also debloated the rom.. so far its been little over 12 hours and i havent really noticed any WiFi issues apart from the WiFi at some point tends to almost seem like it lags and slows down briefly and then just loads.. Not as bad as it was on previous firmware .225 .. Overall performance and battery on device seems pretty decent, without Amplify, without disabling any services or any system tweaks of any kind...
So now that I am onthe new firmware and rooted etc... I will as of this point specifically going to dedicate my diagnosticsand testing solely on the WiFi issue and see if I can find a permanent fix this time on the latest firmware..
Will report back soon.. Hopefully what I have in mind works..
(buffer size, WiFi chip power tweaks, WiFi sleep timers, etc etc etc)

Sorry its been a while..
Just been busy..
So far on the recently updated firmware (.253), I have not had any wifi issues as of yet. And it has been fine since my last post...
One thing ive noticed though is that by default the wifi scanning frequency is set to 180seconds by default.. If you can, try and change the interval between wifi scanning and see if that helps at all..

No worries at all, I have too which is why I didn't see your reply for almost a week.
I haven't updated yet to .253, not sure how to go about it so I have been delaying. I've been poking around the forums here trying to see if anyone posted any instructions on how to upgrade if you are rooted on .224. In the mean time I will keep looking through logs and I'll try the WiFi scanning.
The crappy part is I recently turned on the fingerprint reader and I am also experiencing issues with that. Once or twice a day I get "fingerprint hardware not available" and have to reboot my phone to get that functionality back. I see others with the issue and it happens regardless of firmware so it's probably a marshmallow issue.

All good..
Well you're gonna have to download the firmware from xperifirm and flash it via flashtool.. And since you're rooted with 224, you will have to download the new andropluskernel v34 for 253 firmware.. And TWRP custom recovery 3.0.2. specifically for the Xperia Z5. If you need help on locating the files/guides, I can link them to you, since we aren't in the right thread for this topic .. Just shoot me a PM if you need to and ill happily point you in the right direction.

NeoFroyo!! Well testing

hey guys!
Well i was trawling the android forums and found this!
http://www.neopeek.com/viewtopic.php?t=7524
All thanks yo neopeek for the rom.
I decided to test it out on my kovsky. This coupled with I believe duckkly's kernels worked like a charm!! ill post the kernels up here too as I experimented with quite a few to see what worked best!
Battery life: 8 hours on full blast so i rekon around 11 on normal usage
Wifi: never ever ever dropped on me so far! thou it does seem to be weak in some places around my house where i usually should be getting more signals and strong at places where i get little signal :S.confusing
phone: well calls come in and stuff but sometimes ull see a black screen and cant see who's calling! :S
Bluetooth: paired with my mw600s just fine dont know about file transfer
market:works just fine a bit slow though..could be my internet speeds out here in pakistan.
Apart from that using whatsapp like a charm. facebook apps. gaaps everything works!! not a single sod to date been using it for around about 5 days or so.
Sorry for the spelling errors! big thanks goes out to neopeek and duckkly or whoever compiled those kernels !
PS: oh and the keys will freeze up as you hit around 20% battery. I simply reboot. Also terminal doesnt seem to be working. keeps crashing on me but i dont really ever use it in daily use so it seems to be pretty stable apart from these flaws. Also you'll need to reinstall quickpic from market
Also im on radio 1.16 i believe. 1.14 seemed to drop calls randomly.
please read all of neopeek's instructions before flashing ! happy flashing
can't confirm 20% battery being the point where keys stop working. for me 4 hours of uptime seems the be magic point...
i stopped restarting modules via script (how to has been explained many times in here) and simply restart. most of the time it happens when an app is running - now what good is it if you have a shortcut somewhere, but can't get there because back- and home-key isn't working?!
but yeah, neofroyo is a big step forwards. first time using android on x1 is fun!
for terminal to work you have to reinstall it just like quickpic.
i just hope we'll see some kernel-update soon. without it the whole thing is pointless.
lol truee..thanks for the terminal update. oh if u press the camera button it will take you back to your home screen. than i guess u could load the keyboard modules..annoying i never bother with it. try my combination of kernel it gives me decent battery lifee but yea its the kernel with all the problems. tried the new kernels but they dont seem to work properly
hm, which kernel-version is that?
might try if i know which it is. just had to step down from ygge-monster to ygge-turbo. monster made my touchscreen getting unprecise in left half.
thx for the update with cam-button - never bothered to press that, since camera doesn't work anyway.
yeah, new kernels suck for our device, especially since they're missing the specific battery-driver for x1. the only guy still working on x1-kernel has been silent for months, but i can see he's still at it (porting 2.6.35.7).
Just tried pressing cam-button.
Falls back to lockscreen, after unlock shows homescreen. But system is frozen and after some time reboots directly to android. But lots of stuff doesn't work, especially phone-stuff. So i have to reboot winmo anyway.

i think its the ducckly's keyboard not loaded as modules turbo verison. I believe it should be that because i remember the msm drivers werent really working properly on it

[Q] Galaxy NOTE SOD problems.

My brother's galaxy note have been facing serious sod problems since he bought the phone at Nov 2012. After he faced it the 1st time , he sent to SC and got it back. After 1-2months the problem came again and he asked for my help. I persume it was because the malaysian firmware of the ICS was somewhat unstable from what i read from forums here and there. So i changed the firmware to JB duno from which country when it came out in MAC. After a week or so. The problem reappeared . So I just decided to root and chnge the kernel and also the ROM. Changed the ROM to a stock rom and a kernel. Still the problem persist. I'm out of options. Went to the ****ty SC and the idiots just factory reset the phone and give u back. BUNCH OF RETAR*S . (sorry for my languange)
Hope someone here may help me out with my problem. Thanks a million
Check all the apps you have installed maybe you find the bad one whose causing it as you have mentioned it comes after sometime of installing a fresh rom and have you tried any aosp rom maybe that will fix the issue

I just installed an aosp rom (PA) and I hope it fixes the problem. Well I've seen the amount of apps installed in the note and its jst a quarter the amount I have in the Galaxy S2 and my S2 works like a charm. The note has been giving me headache ever since I got it from my brother. Hope this does solve it , if not I guess its something else maybe hardware
Phone sod twice on paranoid android. FML! Guess im visiting SC tmrw again.
Same problem with me..
My Note 1 has SOD since 1st time bought it..
be patience to install JB --> still SOD
change kernel to SpeedMod 5.3 --> SOD again
change kernel to PhilZ --> sometimes SOD
I have read many information that related with SOD in galnote 1, my opinion it is related with hardware too.. sometimes
or it is related with kernel... it can not wake from deep sleep..
anyone have another better suggestion to cure this ?
if u're using pure stock rom still facing the same problems then definitely is hardware issues!
if ur device still under warranties suggest bring to SC ask them do a thorough check on it n let them know what's going on actually...
Yes, I use stock ROM still has SOD,
so it's hardware issue for sure...
but I will keep the phone for now because sometimes SC doesn't give solution to this..

Yeah and they will give your phone back only doing a factory reset lol

I too get this SOD once a week on my GT-N7000
Phone status when this happens:
stock JB(earlier ICS), non-rooted, data connection, wifi, GPS, bluetooth all disabled. Battery mostly above 80%.
Gmail, Google+, Facebook and all other social n/w apps disabled (yes, i am an oldtimer )
During SOD, if a third party calls my number, he hears it ringing, but my handset is dead as dodo (quite dangerous as the calling person may think i am not answering it)
i used to get this when it was on ICS and still getting it after i upgraded to JB.
Most of the time, SOD occurs during wee hours in morning ( i used battery monitor app that logs battery stats every 10 minutes to check the time when this happens).
Sometimes it occurs when the phone is in my jeans back pocket. phone needs a 10 second press on pwr switch to restart it.
Turning off the "power saver" mode seem to reduce the probability of SOD.
i have taken this phone to SC and they re-flashed the JB.
i told the SC chap that i have already done this and couple of factory resets, but he said that they do "much more" than just re-flashing through kies like calibrating camera, bluetooth )
does anyone in the know, know if this is indeed true ?
Thanks
-mprab
updates...
After 2 days of re-flashing at a samsung authorised service center, i got SoD 2 times in a period of 12 hours.
once last night and second time when i was traveling to office.
Last night i installed some bare-minimum apps back after waiting 2 days for any SoD to happen in "stock" condition.
Well.... i did not pay 30K to use the GNote as just a phone, so installed some basic apps (Battery monitor, Bangalore BMTC, RealCalc, GPS Test, ES File explorer and a first time app StatusLogger)
phone went dead at 1:00 am in morning and as usual there was no wakeup alarm.
phone was warm to touch when it was lying dead. The battery which was 96% at 00:30 AM had gone down to 54% at 7:00 AM.
Status logger did not show any loss of GSM signal which might have resulted in phone transmitting at higher power/hunting for signal etc.
The "radio" seemed working, because when i made a call to the dead phone from my landline, i could hear the phone ring instead of expected "phone is switched off" message i was expecting.
So this has to do with application processor going in some infinite loop.
Uninstalling all apps is NOT an option.
anyone know if we can establish any debug connection to phone and know what the hell CPU is up to in this situation ?
any processor logger that will periodically log all the processes running on phone ?
SOD resolved... not a single one since 6 months.
Hey guys, just wanted to share this info with you, I had SOD's like anything and did all freakingly possible things right from flashing roms to kernels, speed up CPU, banging my head in front of the dumb witted morons at samsung service... to get rid of that pain. What helped me was an app called "WAKELOCK" by darken which is merely 72kb in size but works wonders, not a single SOD after that. What u need to do is.... it has a list of presets that makes sure your cpu stays up. You need to select the preset called "partial wake lock" which is at no. 4, and viola...
It ensures that the CPU is running. No SOD ever after. Also, you need to make it autorun on boot from the options. Yea, it does eat up batter a bit more but its definitely manageable. I still need to charge my note only at night.
Just to be sure, I uninstalled it and guess what, SOD returned. So, do try it, I hope it helps...

Random reboots/resets with 14.1.G.2.257

I meant to create this thread a while ago, but thought it was now time to do so given the fact I'm getting 2-3 reboots per day, and doing lots of different things.
The last reboot was just as I begun to upload a YouTube video, but it can happen when doing anything - or when doing nothing (as in it will sit on a desk and restart by itself).
I can now see other people talking about it, but it would be good to establish just how big a problem there is and perhaps work out how/why it's happening?

Have done a factory reset? I've seen a few reports of reboots and soft-reboots and it could very well be user installed apps, settings and other stuff causing it.
Try a full factory reset and install the most "needed" stuff only. Try it for a day or two.
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
I'm really not keen on doing that if I can help it. I'd sooner wait for an update, or someone figuring out what is causing the problem if there's a workaround temporarily.
Over the years I've done loads of resets and reinstalls, only to find it doesn't fix the problem and just wasted hours of my time.
Getting the random reboots as well. On a couple of occasions I had a running out of memory message just before reboot. Nothing installed I didn't have on previous Samsungs with no issues.

I've been at an exhibition today and it was quite embarrassing (and frustrating) to have it crash twice. Once when uploading the YouTube videos (as mentioned) - which fortunately resumed okay, and then later when I was trying to watch the Apple event (via The Verge).
One thing I've noticed from the beginning, is that changing settings sometimes required a reboot to take effect

I'm not expecting much, but I'm now downloading the Central Europe FTF and will flash that to see if it makes any difference at all (currently on commercial/journalist version).
Anything I can try that won't force me to start from scratch has to be worth it.

In the interest of scientific research (and reading the high CPU thread) I've backed up my sd card, re formatted it and just copied the music and DCIM folders back in, to see if that makes any difference. Card is genuine SanDisk 32gb class 10 card. Watch this space.

Latest issue was the phone vibrating solid when pinch zooming (in or out) which was rather annoying!

Glad to see Sony keeping up with the updates
I have the same problem with the Z1. Also on ...257 and using 4G/3G. On the old firmware the phone hard-crashed several times and needed at 'hard-reset' at the simcard. But that happens not now - only 'soft restarts'. But very annoying. It happens both when using the phone and when its idle (in the night for example it restarts several times). You can see the restarts in the log on the phone.
I have some 'old' samsungs and they almost never restarts (sometime app's closes - but thats different) . I didn't expect such an unstable product from Sony when it's so expensive.
The value doesn't matter. It's just a silly bug that they need to fix quickly. I fear it will be a few weeks potentially for us to get it.

Two this evening with central Europe firmware, so clearly need new version ASAP. It's almost getting to the point where I can't use it because reset will happen at any moment.
Yes, also had 2 in last 30 minutes. So sd card reformat not a cure.I've contacted @SonyXperiagb on Twitter to see if they are aware of problem.

it is a bug on sony fw and appear on google 4.1 - 4.2 android. it has something to do with wifi sleep power policy and wakelocks, im not sure. I had experience this problem with many devices on 4.1 and 4.2, include samsung ones. The easiest way to fix is to reset to factory and trace back your steps, anything to do with wifi (auto update, auto upload) is the culpit. Or if you can remember, try to trace back so you dont have to factory reset .
on .534, i had this problem when turning on update via wifi only in update center settings, get sod and constant restarts. disable it does not help, only to find out has to reenable again backlight optimisation.
Good luck!
I don't think that's it. Just need to wait for fix. Didn't have problem before this update, ever.

the fix are only those i told , further more updates will fix it but you can do it manually your self
A factory reset with a whole world of pain, and no guarantee it won't still mess up, isn't really a solution to me. Sorry!

[Q] Buggy GPS, am I the only one?

Hey guys, I'm having GPS issues with my phone. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same.
I'm getting a decently long lock time and then afterwards, every 10-15 mins I'm getting a lock loss followed by a little delay then a lock again.
In case it helps, I'm on stock build KTU84P.N910TUVU1ANJ7.
Consequentially, if someone could help me out by giving me the following files from their phone, it'd be really appreciated:
/system/lib/hw/gps.default.so
/system/lib/libloc_core.so
/system/lib/libloc_api_v02.so
/system/lib/libloc_eng.so
/system/etc/gps.conf
Same here.. Across ROMs(NJ7 based ROM and stock NJ7) as well. Did the compass calibration but didn't fix it. Navigation on this phone is pretty terrible since it loses gps every 15 minutes like what you're seeing.. Any suggestions from anyone would be great!
I flashed the new baseband and still am having the issue of a buggy GPS...
I did have initial issues.
But the compass calibration seems to have resolved most of those.
Though yesterday I did lose the gps signal, which I thought was weird.
It was the first time it did that which I can remember.
It's happened to me on all my Note phones. Samsungs gps is less than spectacular.
Ya I'm having the same issue it doesn't matter the ROM still same issue. But think its a Samsung firmware issue. It works for me initially on a trip A to B but seems way back B to A it stops. Didn't have this issue with note 3. Part of my reason for bigger phone is GPS use so this is irritating. If not fixed with lollipop might have to change.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My Note 4 is currently completely stock/unrooted NK4, and I've seen the same thing - GPS works for several minutes, dies for about 5 seconds, then comes back. I've also once had GPS fail to lock at all until I rebooted the phone. :-/
Oh, well. It's still way better than my old S3 which had been dropped quite a few times.
I'm not having any gps issues. The new updated maps is doing it for me.
But, on other phones I have installed the faster fix app when having gps issues. It can be acquired in the playstore:

WiFi Turning Off During Deep Sleep

Hi all,
Can anyone help with this issue. I can see no long discussion about it which seems to suggest it's either rare (not great) or something I am doing (probably).
My WiFi status appears to be fine throughout the day, when in regular use. I have no speed issues (connection speeds as expected for my home internet), no random drops or on/off switches and no seeming battery drain. I have all additional services on (Bluetooth, location and NFC as I want the phone to be fully functional at all times and not just 'look nice') and despite this I get what I would expect in battery life (c. 6 hrs screen on time). YET, amongst a few other problems (what is the slider customisation about - awful!) the one I can't fathom is this:
My WiFi switches off over night presumably when the phone goes into deep sleep. I have gone into the advanced settings and set it to 'Always on' but this doesn't seem to keep it 'always on'. I wake up in the morning and it is off. I was running some Tasker profiles (which seem to make little difference given the slider issue noted above) but actually my WiFi isn't one off the Tasks effected by a night time profile.
Any help would be appreciated.
AS a secondary question, I switched my VPN over to Canada as suggested and was provided with the Nougat update. I haven't yet tried it but was wondering if there are any bugs that I should consider before switching over given I am 4 days into owning this phone and still haven't ironed out certain things in Marshmallow.
Just as a follow up question, would the 'turn Doze off' option help with this? Surely I shouldn't have to do this though?
Am I the only one having this issue? That would suck. Even so, would anybody more adept at these things than me like to have a guess at solving the issue.
IV had agresive dose mode on and haven't had any wifi problems but I am on 4.0.1 so might want to just update it as it's really stable and I haven't had any issue except having to reconfigure the APN settings. PS if you do update reset you phone after as some people have said it helps with the new file system.

Hi all,
Can anyone help with this issue.

This happens when people is crying about updates every day. Then, when the updates are available, they update it in the first minute and again, they start crying, that they encounter bugs and stuff that doesnt work as it should, even if they dont have any idea how to revert their OS to the previous working one. People should learn how to be patient and enjoy their phones without being so greedy about updates.
Just sit tight, enjoy your phone, READ forums about latest updates and the problems encountered on that specific update ( since its still a beta update, and an early one , called Beta 1 ). If they seem to be fine with those issue, ONLY then should update to the latest one.

I haven't 'cried' about anything, pal, so keep your unhelpful comments to yourself or help. Don't middle ground-it by offering your own personal, and incorrect, opinions.
I hadn't upgraded anything, I was running stock OS and stock marshmallow, so I had literally done nothing to my device other than switch it on and download the same apps I've been using for years.
I've also rooted several devices in the past with no issues and chime in when I can to help, but I'm not a dev and there are far more technologically gifted individuals operating in this forum which is why I sought help here... Not that I got much from you. But I'm more than capable of reading release notes and making sure I can revert backwards before installing anything.
Now to anyone still here, and with the same issue, it appears that carrying out the update to Nougat, re-adding my WiFi networks and clearing system cache solved the problem or at least for the first night. Should this change I'll update here.

Hi Iso, thank you for your response, I hadn't seen this until now.
The upgrade to 4.0.1 does appear to have done the trick somewhat as it stayed on overnight without issue. I did notice it wasn't on a little later this morning but I am giving the device the benefit of the doubt on that one as I have been messing about with certain things and it's possible I or a profile in tasker switched it off.
As an aside do you recommend any other potential fixes, just to be on the safe side.
Did you factory reset after upgrading? Other than that it's probably a app you have I hear Facebook is really bad at battery

I didn't factory reset, only Cache wipe after the upgrade, and as it seems ok so far, I am reluctant to factory reset the device as it took so long to set up in the first instance.
Should it start becoming an issue again I'll try it but for now...
Also I know there are backup options though I haven't found one that works flawlessly which gives me the confidence to explore this avenue just yet.
You might have to because in nuogat they optimized the file system and in order to get the new one you have to factory reset not 100% sure it affects battery life but it really affects performance, PS also try turning off gestures, ambient display and pocket mode

Are you sure ISO? The UI has been updated and the already snappy OS feels snappier. Is there a way to tell for sure if it's required?
If so, any good recommendations for backup capability. I have used Helium to mixed results and I can't use Titanium as I have no root (and don't wish to).
Maybe not but it all elts fails
